Last month, HBO said goodbye to two of its signature series: “Succession,” a tale of three born billionaires vying to replace their aging patriarch; and “Barry,” an action comedy that unlocked new levels of ambition in its star-auteur, Bill Hader. Fans — and, one presumes, the network — were left with a vacuum the next seasons of “The White Lotus” and “House of the Dragon” are too far off to fill. Fortunately, a show that combines the best of both its erstwhile peers returns June 18 for a third season. “The Righteous Gemstones” remains consistent in its outrageous opulence and crude humor, but its latest chapter is unusually well timed.
Like “Succession,” “The Righteous Gemstones” follows a family poisoned by wealth and power at a crucial inflection point; like “Barry,” the show has a visual panache that defies our expectations for a half-hour comedy. But unlike either show, “The Righteous Gemstones” resists the...

HBO is bringing back its most beloved, ultra-rich adult children fighting for their family business. I’m talking, of course, about the Gemstones.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Tiffany Haddish does not have a contract to return, and is bowing out after a three-season run.
The beloved series is also changing showrunners. Owen Smith (Black-ish) becomes the show's fourth showrunner, replacing Keenen Ivory Wayans.

“The Last O.G.” isn’t done yet.
TBS has renewed the Tracy Morgan comedy for a fourth season, however, it will be moving forward without star Tiffany Haddish who is exiting the series, according to sources. News of the renewal comes around five months after season 3 aired the last of its 10 episodes.
Of note is that the show is changing showrunner for the fourth time in four seasons. Owen Smith, whose previous credits include “Black-ish” and “Survivor’s Remorse,” is taking over from Keenen Ivory Wayans for the forthcoming season. Wayans took over last year from season 2 showrunner Saladin K. Patterson, who himself assumed showrunning duties from season 1 showrunner and series co-creator John Carcieri.

Righteous Gemstones director David Gordon Green reveals how the show's transformative trip to the past came to be.
When HBO first ordered a full series for Danny McBride's next comedy effort, The Righteous Gemstones, they set the episode order at eight. That was before, however, McBride and the writing staff had some downtime from filming to think about including maybe just one more.
"We had just finished writing (episode) four and we were like a day ahead of schedule in our writing commitments," McBride told reporters at the 2019 TCA summer press tour. "So Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri, two of the other executive producers on the show, we just were like, 'Hey, what should we do? We got an extra day’ and then, we just started kind of brainstorming about this idea if we did a flashback episode what would that entail?"

It’s not only tentpole sequels like Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado that Josh Brolin can be seen this summer. In addition to his three theatrical outings, Brolin will round off the summer with his Netflix comedy The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter. After opening to unenthusiastic reviews at the South by Southwest Film Festival (including our own), Netflix has now released the trailer for the film.
The story centers on Brolin’ Buck Ferguson, a deer-hunting TV personality. After Ferguson reconnects with his distant son Jaden (played by Young Sheldon’s Montana Jordan), he plans to shoot a special episode of his show that covers his son’s inaugural whitetail deer hunt. Along with their happy-go-lucky cameraman Don (played by Danny McBride), Ferguson and his son embark on an adventure that explores the forgotten importance of their father-son relationship.

“Vice Principals” and “Eastbound & Down” co-creator Jody Hill is back with his first film in almost a decade. Like all his major projects to date, “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” is a comedy with Danny McBride in a plum role. Hill and McBride penned the Netflix script with John Carcieri, a producer on their past HBO series.
Leading the cast is John Brolin as Buck Ferguson, a hunter who fronts “Buck Fever” wildlife documentary specials. He brings his cameraman (McBride) and pre-teen son (Montana Jordan of “Young Sheldon”) on a rugged trek, but the latter misses the modern comforts of 21st century life. In his boredom, the boy reveals that his mother (Carrie Coon) — whom Buck misses two years post-divorce — is about to become engaged (Scoot McNairy of “Halt and Catch Fire” plays her boyfriend).

Tracy Morgan’s return to television brought big ratings to TBS on Tuesday. The premiere of The Last O.G., also starring Tiffany Haddish and executive produced by Jordan Peele, drew 1.8 million total viewers, with 882K in the key 18-49 demo in Live+same day. That marks the biggest cable comedy premiere since 2016, the largest scripted cable comedy premiere since 2015 and the strongest TBS original debut ever, according to the network and Nielsen.
The total-viewers number is projected to hit 1.25 million in Live+7. In addition, more than 6.9M total viewers (3.3M 18-49) tuned into the show over a three-night, five-telecast launch on TBS and TNT following the Ncaa Men’s Basketball Final Four.
The numbers are a boon for TBS, which picked up the series after it was passed on by FX in the pilot script stage. It then was redeveloped at TBS.

TBS is home to some quirky TV series. While Tracy Morgan has been a broadcast network star and household name for more than 20 years, his new TV show, The Last Og, seems right in line with Turner's offbeat comedic sensibilities. Can Morgan's star power translate to staying power on cable, like it did on NBC's Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock? Will The Last Og be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. Tracy Morgan believes in second chances. “For me, I got a second chance at life, I got a second chance at love, I got a second chance at show business and a career,” Morgan told IndieWire. The comedian returns to series TV on Tuesday night with TBS’ “The Last O.G.,” his first major role since recovering from a horrific automobile accident in 2014.
“And this time I’m going to do it right,” Morgan said. “I wanted to do TV the way it should be done.” Morgan plays Tray, an ex-con who is released after 15 years in prison and realizes the world has changed, from his now gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood to his ex-girlfriend Shay (Tiffany Haddish), who’s now married to a white man (Ryan Gaul). An even bigger shocker: Shay is raising two teens — who turn out to be Tray’s kids, whom he didn’t know even existed. Cedric the Entertainer also stars,...

There’s really nothing like hearing Tracy Morgan call someone a motherfucker, and in 2018, only “The Last O.G.” offers audiences this distinct pleasure. Though bleeped (“O.G.” is on TBS, mind you), Morgan’s marble-mouthed warble, charged to the hilt by America’s most dependable curse word, still conveys the raw power and careful timing needed to make it hilarious, and he goes back to the well just often enough to make it memorable in the new comedy’s first six episodes.
In that uncanny utterance, illustrating Morgan’s broad appeal, “The Last O.G.” is already a show worth watching, and he’s only half of a dynamic duo. Tiffany Haddish is here, too, dropping censored swears and cold-cocking former friends. She’s a force as much as she constitutes the show’s limitations overall: Very good yet not yet great, the rest of the series gets a lot...

In two television series (“Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals”) and two feature films (“The Foot Fist Way” and “Observe and Report”), writer/director Jody Hill and writer/star Danny McBride have created a devastatingly funny and increasingly relevant commentary on the curse of toxic masculinity. The Hill/McBride “hero” is, in most cases, a retrograde blowhard, dumb as a stump and proud as a peacock, the kind of forgotten man that was easy to dismiss until they put their alpha male into the Oval Office.
The specificity with which their best works address (and, to some extent, explain) the broken soul of the American man in the 2010s is, unfortunately, a quality that’s barely present in their latest collaboration – which is particularly disappointing, because they’ve selected such a juicy target. “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” concerns that most macho and yet inexplicable of American male traditions,...

We’re getting a look at Tracy Morgan’s return to series television in a new trailer for The Last O.G. which premieres April 3 on TBS.
