Prepare to feast. Or dance. This week’s streaming debuts include two visually sumptuous films that will whet your Easter-weekend appetite.
The contender to watch this week: “The Taste of Things“
France lost out on an Oscar nomination when the country’s selection committee chose Trần Anh Hùng‘s savory romance about a venerable chef (Benoît Magimel) and a gifted cook (Juliette Binoche) instead of eventual Best Picture nominee “Anatomy of a Fall.” But even if the movie didn’t make the Best International Feature Film category, it earned an immediate spot in the culinary canon. Like the documentary “Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros,” last year’s other great food movie, “The Taste of Things” is kitchen porn. In the warmly lit countryside, the gourmands prepare veal loins, roasted vegetables, baked Alaska, and the creamiest omelet you’ve ever seen. Select theaters are still showing the film, but it’s newly available on VOD.

A Universal Monsters project is coming our way from Radio Silence, the filmmaking team that previously brought Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream VI to the screen. Universal has scheduled an April 19, 2024 theatrical release date for the film, which was once going by the title Dracula’s Daughter and now going by the less informative title of Abigail. With the release date swiftly approaching, a promo video in which cast member Kathryn Newton (Freaky) gives a tour of the set has arrived online, while co-star Dan Stevens – who can be seen in this weekend’s release Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – has given an interview where he described Abigail as extreme and hilarious. The set tour promo video can be seen in the embed above.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Steven said, “Those Radio Silence boys are so much fun. I’m slowly ticking off all of the guys from the V/H/S anthology.

While Martin Scorsese aims to kick off production on his Jesus film this year, Terrence Malick is going on year five of editing his, marking one of the only films to wrap production pre-pandemic that still has yet to be released. As so happens every year before the Cannes Film Festival announces its lineup, rumors have swirled that the director’s Biblical epic The Way of the Wind (formerly known as The Last Planet) may see a premiere in 2024. We will, unfortunately, have to wait another year, but in the meantime we have exclusive new details on the highly anticipated project.
Actor Géza Röhrig, who stars as Jesus in the film, recently stopped by a university in the Northeast for a conversation on his career. During the chat he confirmed the film is targeting a 2025 Cannes debut. Wind will not exactly focus on Jesus and Peter (as played by Matthias Schoenaerts...

“The Righteous Gemstones” star Tony Cavalero has joined the cast of “Lips Like Sugar,” a crime thriller set during the 1984 summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles, starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson.
Cavalero is best known for his breakout performance as Keefe, the lovable ex-Satanist turned fan-favorite mullet man, in Danny McBride’s cult hit HBO series. “The Righteous Gemstones” was renewed for a fourth season last July.
With “Lips Like Sugar,” Cavalero joins a buzzy ensemble which also includes Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis, Sasha Calle, Kathryn Newton and Erin Moriarty. Harrelson and Wilson star as detectives John Carr and Phil Harris, a pair of homicide cops working to solve a possible serial killer case while police and city officials demand that all murders in L.A. be labeled “missing persons” for the duration of the games.

As the great Renata Klein, played by Laura Dern on HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” once said, “I will not, not be rich!” And very soon, we may be rich in more content from the Emmy award-winning series.
Regarding a third season of the hit HBO drama, Reese Witherspoon told Variety on the carpet of the 81st Golden Globes in January, “We are working on it. [Nicole Kidman] and I have been working on it a lot.”
Well, IndieWire caught up with star Kathryn Newton at the 17th Annual Women in Film Oscar Nominees Party on Friday, March 8 at Catch Steak LA. Newton, of course, plays Abigail Carson, the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Adam Scott’s characters Madeline Martha Mackenzie and Ed Mackenzie. We could not help but ask her if she has been hearing anything in her orbit about a third installment.

Kathryn Newton is inevitably one of the best actresses of this generation. Yet, her recent onscreen performances aren’t quite catching fire at box offices the same way they did before. Just like how her Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) managed to gross almost thrice its budget, her recent Ant-Man 3 failed to land the mark and ended with a disappointing box office run.
Kathryn Newton in The Society
As it seems, that losing box-office streak of hers isn’t dying down easily. This comes after her most recent movie Lisa Frankenstein suffered a devastating blow at the worldwide box office to end its run with a gross even less than its budget. Despite this, her fans still have high hopes for this film, even predicting that it would go on to become a cult classic following its release on streaming.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s something simultaneously exciting and horrifying about discovering the worst entry of the Amityville “franchise” more than 35 films in. And yet, Amityville Hex truly is *that* bad.
The first of writer /director Tony Newton’s two entries, 2021’s Amityville Hex is a disaster in nearly every way. From amateur acting to a repetitive script to an egregiously long (and unearned) runtime, the film embodies all of the negative qualities that have earned “Amityville” films derision and mockery.
Modeled on the screenlife model popularized by Host and, to a lesser extent Unfriended and Searching, Newton’s film focuses on vloggers who participate in “the Amityville Hex”, which involves reading a chant on camera, then documenting the aftermath.

One-time NFL Mvp Cam Newton was involved in a huge brawl at a 7-on-7 football event this weekend, resulting in a viral video of the melee.
The former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback, who in his playing days was listed at 6’5″ and 245 pounds, appeared to engage in a battle with several men. The combatants were reported to be from Top Shelf Performance, who had teams playing in the first “We Ball Sports” 7v7 tournament in Atlanta.
Newton’s “C1N” 7v7 team was also participating in the event.
The reports on the fight did not indicate what started things, but it eventually spilled out of a pop-up tent onto a nearby area bordered by a fence. A security officer finally managed to disperse the sides. There were no reports of serious injuries or arrests.
Newton, age 34, last played in the NFL in 2021.

So, since we’re deep into the holiday season (the biggie is just ten days away), what better time to revisit some old friends? And it really has been a long stretch, actually more than twenty years. That’s quite a gap between sequels, especially in animation where franchises seem to abound almost annually. Yes, the decades set this flick apart, but also its style. It’s not drawn at the old “light-desk’ nor is fashioned from pixels via an army of computers. This piece would truly be considered “old school’ as it returns to the techniques of “stop-motion animation”, which has been a cinema staple for over a hundred years. These days it’s mainly employed in the service of “selling” in TV commercials or the occasional TV special. But these wacky “wizards of clay” at Aardman (the main characters are molded and sculpted) are masters of this time-consuming...

Somehow, it has been almost 25 years since Aardman Animations released its first full-length stop-motion animated film, "Chicken Run." The then-fledgling DreamWorks Skg released the film in the summer of 2000, before the studio's fortunes would shift with the "Shrek" franchise the following year. For Aardman, though they netted an A-List celebrity in the form of Mel Gibson, "Chicken Run" was both thrilling and also somewhat modest. Riffing on World War II-era entertainment, "Chicken Run" was an exciting adventure about a group of chickens who band together to escape their cruel owners and a fine example of how animation could do more than just what was being offered by Disney and Pixar. Now, decades later, Aardman isn't the only stop-motion animation house working today, and DreamWorks' biggest days appear to be behind them. So for a sequel, subtitled "Dawn of the Nugget," Aardman is now pairing with Netflix for another lighthearted, fast-paced...

Ant-Man and the Wasp return for a second sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a new adventure that’s designed to kick off the next phase of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). As such, it’s a visually inventive, comics-inspired tale that properly introduces a major new villain and delivers action, humour and emotion in the mighty Marvel manner.
Directed once again by Peyton Reed (who helmed both previous Ant-Man movies), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania picks up some time after the events of Avengers: Endgame. While enjoying his new-found life as a hero, Scott reconnects with his now teenage daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton), only to discover that she has made contact with microscopic universe the Quantum Realm, where Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) was once trapped.

If you’ve ever questioned the need for police resources to be spent on decades-old cold cases, Steeltown Murders will leave you in no doubt. Over four episodes, this BBC drama shows how momentous it is for victims and their families to know the truth about a crime, however much time has passed since it was committed.
In 1973, three Welsh teenagers were murdered in Neath and Port Talbot. Sandra Newton, Pauline Floyd and Gwyneth Hughes were picked up hitchhiking after nights out, and then raped, strangled to death and discarded. For almost 30 years, their families and friends lived without knowing who their killer was or whether he walked among them.
Steeltown Murders shows how those three decades were permeated with grief, regret and guilt – not from the killer, whose motivations and reactions this BBC drama studiously ignores – but from the girls’ loved ones, and from the police who initially failed them.

Bill Murray is making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his new role in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, playing a governor in the Quantum Realm.
Murray’s co-star Kathryn Newton appeared on Thursday’s edition of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, where she shared the surreal anecdote of the time the “Ghostbusters” star asked her permission to join the MCU.

Luke Newton is stepping into the spotlight for Bridgerton Season 3. The new season will focus on his character Colin Bridgerton’s love story with Penelope Featherington. Bridgerton has become one of the most popular series on Netflix, and season 3 promises to bring in just many viewers. John Badham's 1986 comedy "Short Circuit" was a masterwork on cinematic animatronics. The film's main character was a robot, called only Number Five (voiced by Tim Blaney), who was struck by lightning and lost its memory, but somehow gained sentience. Number Five, originally built to be a laser-wielding soldier, idly rolled out of the robotics lab where it was built and into the home of the put-upon suburbanite Stephanie (Ally Sheedy). Stephanie spends the bulk of the film trying to teach Number Five about the fineries of human interaction while providing it with all the raw data she can provide; Number Five can read books in a matter of seconds.
Searching for Number Five is a military jarhead named Capt. Skroeder (G.W. Bailey), and a pair of funny robotics geniuses named Newton and Ben (Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens). Antics ensue on all sides while Number Five itself slowly comes...

Exclusive: Apple TV+’s Huey P. Newton series The Big Cigar has rounded out its cast, with Jaime Ray Newman (Dopesick), Noah Emmerich (Dark Winds), John Doman (City on a Hill), Chris Brochu (Zero Contact) and newcomer Brenton Allen coming aboard in recurring roles. André Holland leads the cast, with Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, Pj Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Jordane Christie, Moses Ingram, Olli Haaskivi and Glynn Turman also set to star, as previously announced.
The six-episode limited series, based on the eponymous Playboy magazine article by Argo‘s Joshuah Bearman, tells the extraordinary, hilarious, almost-too-good-to-be-true story of how Black Panther leader Newton (Holland) relied on his best friend, Bert Schneider (Nivola) — the Hollywood producer behind Easy Rider — to elude a nationwide manhunt and escape to Cuba while being pursued into exile by the FBI.
Newman will play Roz Torrance, with Emmerich as Schneider’s brother Stanley, and Doman as his father Abe.
