The 2030 men’s football World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with one match each taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, FIFA announced on Wednesday.
Uruguay will also hold a centenary ceremony in Montevideo, where the first World Cup took place in 1930.
The event will be the first World Cup to span three continents, with games in Africa, Europe and South America.
Saudi Arabia, which is believed to have heavily lobbied for 2030 hosting, will now push for the 2034 tournament. FIFA announced Wednesday that the Asian and Oceanian continental federations will now be invited to bid for the 2034 tournament. The Saudis wasted no time to indicate they will bid on that gathering.
“The FIFA Council, representing the entire world of football, unanimously agreed to celebrate the centenary of the FIFA World Cup, whose first edition was played in Uruguay in 1930, in the most appropriate way,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Spain have defeated England’s Lionesses to win the women’s soccer World Cup.
Despite a missed penalty, the victorious Spanish team took the trophy after winning 1-0, the difference being a first half goal by Olga Carmona, who finished smartly following a loose run by England’s Lucy Bronze.
England felt like favorites going into the 70,000 sellout game in Melbourne but Spain dominated throughout and had more chances. They failed to convert good semi-final form onto the biggest stage and England’s long wait for a first World Cup final win continues, although England did win the Euros last year. King Charles and his son Prince William had earlier wished the Lionesses good luck via video messages.
The players were nervy at the start but Spain played the better football in the first half and it wasn’t overly surprising when Carmona scored, with England completely losing their shape.

It's safe to say that the cultural influence of the 1966 "Batman" series peaked with the release of the 1966 feature-length spin-off movie. As detailed in "Batman: The Complete History" by Les Daniels, the series was met with declining enthusiasm when returned for a second season and was then canceled by ABC after the third season. Like the concurrently-airing "Star Trek" on NBC, "Batman" was a classic in the making, but cut short for contemporary audiences.
That's not to say the "Batman" team didn't try to save the show. For season 3, they mixed up the formula. To save costs, they cut the two episodes, one-story format -- aired on back-to-back nights -- from previous seasons. This also meant doing away with the trademark comic book-style cliffhangers. However, one innovation meant a budget increase: bringing in a third star alongside Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward). That star was Barbara Gordon, daughter...

FIFA has turned down Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s request to share a message about world peace to the global audience that will watch the World Cup final on Sunday, CNN reported Friday.
Zelenskyy, who last week was named Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” for his leadership following Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine, offered to appear in a video link to speak with fans at the stadium in Qatar where France will face off against Argentina, CNN said, citing an unidentified source.
It wasn’t clear if the video was meant to be taped or a livestream, but international soccer’s government body turned down the offer.
“We thought FIFA wanted to use its platform for the greater good,” the source told CNN.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 16 (Ians) FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed on Friday that the organization will reconsider the format for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The 2026 tournament will see the number of teams expanded from 32 to 48, and it had originally been announced that these 48 teams would be divided into 16 groups of three, with the top two sides progressing to a straight knockout stage with 32 teams.
However, this format has two clear problems: the first is that teams are only assured of playing two matches, as opposed to three under the current system.
The second problem is that the last game in every group would be played between two teams that both know the result they need in order to reach the knockout stage, potentially opening the door for collusion to ensure a mutually beneficial result.

The captains of seven European teams at the World Cup — including heavy-hitters England, Germany, and the Netherlands — will no longer be wearing armbands in support of the LGBTQ community following threats from international soccer’s governing body, FIFA, The Washington Post reports.
The armbands would have been a pointed protest against the host nation, Qatar, where consensual same-sex relations between men are punishable by up to seven years in prison, according to the U.S. State Department. Opening ceremonies to major sporting events are, in the robust opinion of a committed sports fan, a sop to the people who love the drama and spectacle of international commingling, but have little interest in the games being played.
At the Olympics, they have become an enormous, gaudy art form in their own right – from the jaw-dropping show at Beijing’s Bird’s Nest to the cringe-inducing fantasia of London 2012 – but they’ve never been such a big part of World Cups. Perhaps the only lasting memory of an opening ceremony is Diana Ross missing, with the goal at her mercy, during the 1994 curtain-raising bonanza. On Saturday, Gianni Infantino, the polyglot head of FIFA, set the tone for this tournament’s opening.
Sat at a press conference, an array of sponsored items laid out before him like The Generation Game conveyor belt, Infantino gave an impassioned defence of the tournament.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hit back at criticism of Qatar’s human rights record in an extraordinary press conference in Doha, the day before the World Cup kicks off in the Middle East.
