Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, now on Netflix in eight episodes is everything that Bhansali has come to be associated with, then some more. It is a feast for the eyes and soul with a gallery of female actors giving their best to every shot. At times the best of these actresses is not good enough. One of the lead actresses pretending to be drunken dancing is ludicrously caricatural. But then there is Aditi Rao Hydari looking every inch the ethereal kothewali, a distant cousin to Rekha in Umrao Jaan. And Shruti Sharma as ill-fated-in-love Saima makes her space. I must also mention Jayati Bhatia as Manisha Koirala’s faithful woman-Friday. Even when in the background she makes her presence felt.
Bhansali’s vision and execution are impeccable so much so that you wonder what this kotha classic would look like on the big screen.

A project nurtured over 12 long years and conceptualized by one of Bollywood’s premiere directors at the forefront of historical epics, which oftentimes are interwoven with enchanting Indian mythos of years past. Inspired by the Marathi novel ‘Rau’ by the late Nagnath S. Inamdar, Sanjay Bhansali brings to life this visually arresting story of a 18th century Peshwa (akin to a modern-day prime minister) Bajirao’s love triangle with a Muslim maiden Mastani and his wife Kashibai. ‘A will as immovable as the Himalayas’ leads the charge as this tragic saga unfolds, an allegory of intimacy, lust and passion set against the bubbling racial instability of the Hindu Maratha Empire.
Emperor Chhatrapati Shahu (Mahesh Manjrekar) is looking for the next Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. Before he could appoint one of his courtiers as the next leader, a defiant Bajirao Ballal (Ranveer Singh) barges into the court and challenges the man for the prestigious role.

Having premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Festival this February, “Gangubai Kathiawadi” is loosely based on the true story of Gangubai Harjivandas, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi, and one of the best Hindi movies we have seen lately.
The story begins in the present, when a young girl that has just been sold to a brothel, is finding it really difficult to adapt, much less “perform”, to the frustration of the madame, who calls Gangubai, to help her with the “wildling”. Thus, in a rather impressive, star-studded intro, we are introduced to the main protagonist, who proceeds on telling her own story to the girl, with the film taking a lengthy flashback to the past. Born into an affluent family in Kathiawad, Ganga Harjivandas aspired to become a Bollywood actress. At the tender age...

Gangubai Kathiawadi
Music and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
A very young very pained girl face is being painted, prepared for something not very pleasant. She is grimacing and to add to her pain a firm hand holds her face, stuffs her mouth with a cloth and pierces her nose with something as sharp as the dialogues of this film. As she bleeds the blood mingles with her cheap makeup.
This opening sequence is like a piercing scream in the dark that sets the mood for a film that defies analysis. How do we describe what Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done with his Gangubai? And where are the words to reify the illimitable pain that Alia Bhatt’s eyes convey? She smiles, she laughs, she dances, she bullies her enemies and berates her friends… But her eyes remain ceaselessly swathed in sorrow.
I have never witnessed a performance more heroic...

ControversyThe Karni Sena had been demanding a ban on the period film on the grounds that it "distorts" historical facts and projects queen Padmini in poor light. Tnm StaffThe Shri Rajput Karni Sena on Friday announced it has decided to take back its protest against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat, stating the movie glorifies the valour of the Rajputs. Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena's Mumbai leader Yogendra Singh Katar said that on the directions of organisation's national President Sukhdev Singh Gogamadi, a few members watched the movie in Mumbai on Friday, and found that that the movie glorifies the valour and sacrifice of Rajput and every Rajput will be feeling proud after watching the film. There is no such objectionable scene between Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khilji and Queen Padmini of Mewar which hurts the sentiments of Rajputs, he said in a letter, declaring that the Karni Sena takes back their protest and will help the administration to release the film in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat as well as across all cinema houses in India. The Karni Sena had been demanding a ban on the period film on the grounds that it "distorts" historical facts and projects queen Padmini in poor light. Last month, Supreme Court also lifted the ban on the movie imposed by several states and directed them to ensure its release. The film was released in theatres across India on January 25 amidst tight security and protest from various groups, including Karni Sena. However, some cinema hall owners decided not to screen the film in the wake of protests being carried allegedly by Karni Sena members in Gujarat and Haryana. Deepika Padukone plays the title role in this flick with Shahid Kapoor, Ranvir Singh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Anupriya Goenka in important roles. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has composed tunes for the soundtrack and the Bgm has been scored by Sanchit Balhara. Sudeep Chatterjee is the cinematographer of this movie while the editing has been handled by Jayant Jadhar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Akiv Ali. Padmaavat is bankrolled by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Sudhanshu Vats and Ajit Andhare under the banner Bhansali Productions and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. (With Ians inputs)...

EntertainmentEven if the film had released in the states where it has run into controversy, the figure would have been nowhere close.Digital NativeThe record created by Baahubali: The Conclusion is intact! The film had netted Rs. 125 crores on day one of its release while its Hindi version had netted Rs. 41 crores. So, there were huge expectations that the magnum opus Padmaavat would break the record. Well, to all those waiting eagerly to know about the box office collections of the Deepika Padukone starrer Padmaavat, it was around Rs. 18 – 19 crores. All the negative publicity and controversies surrounding the film did not work towards its favour. The film’s release was stalled in some states like Rajasthan. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana due to widespread protests and to maintain the law and order situation. While some maintain that the ban did affect its collections at the box office, others point out that even if the ban was lifted, Padmaavat would have managed to get around Rs. 25 crores, which is nowhere near Baahubali 2’s collections. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Padmaavat went on the floors under the title Padmavati but had to be renamed Padmaavat. During the shooting, protests erupted in parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and other northern states with the Rajput Karni Sena claiming that the film contained factual inaccuracies and that it depicted the Rajput community in poor light. Deepika Padukone plays the title role in this flick with Shahid Kapoor, Ranvir Singh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Anupriya Goenka in important roles. Padmaavat
Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
For my money there is no contemporary filmmaker with the vision and velocity of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The man makes every frame in his cinema seem like a wondrous timeless work of art.
As in all his films there are visuals in Padmaavat that will be remembered for all times to come. And this is as opportune a time as any to salute Bhansali’s cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee who is a magician, a visionary par excellence who can put on screen images that poets and painters put into their creations when at the acme of inspiration.
Almost every moment in the story that Bhansali tells of the royal Queen Padmavati and the Islamic invader who lusts after her, is pure magic. The mesmerizing mise en scene hooks you from the...

Noooooo! Producer Rakesh Roshan is already looking at a release date for his film Kaabil. To be directed by Sanjay Gupta, Kaabil will be shot and completed in three months at a stretch from April-June. However, the release will only happen next year. Explains Rakesh Roshan, "All the major release dates this year are already taken. So we've reserved January 26, 2017 as the release date for Kaabil. We are in no hurry release our film." And no, Kaabil has no patriotic flavour to go with the Republic Day mood. About the unlikely merger of the Roshans with Sanjay Gupta, Rakesh says, "Sanjay Gupta narrated a story written by Vijay Mishra which both Hrithik Roshan and I liked. It is something Hrithik has not done before. It is in the thriller genre. But it's different, and yet mainstream, somewhat like the films that I direct which are massy and yet removed from the expected.

The cinematically grandeur hall of fame that is known as the Sanjay Leela Bhansali epics has another film to its feature wall. The era, the costumes, the sets… everything is at the scale of the veteran filmmaker modus operandi. Yet there is something about Bajirao Mastani that doesn’t fall into the niche as perfectly as its predecessors. It isn’t that Bhansali isn’t appropriate as a director for the historical and politically enticing tale of forbidden love. But somewhere in the research for the costumes, dialect, history and big screen adaptation of Nagnath S Inamdar’s Marathi novel Rau, we have missing pieces that point back to the veteran and his writing team, which includes himself, Mallika Dutt Gharde and Prakash Kapadia.
The story of love that destroyed the lovers themselves but stood strong in their hearts is quite familiar to most. We have enough examples. Bajirao Mastani...

Bollywood is going high-tech! Like its western counterpart, new-age film-makers are adopting top-of-the-line technology to shoot complicated action sequences, otherwise impossible to film with conventional cameras.
Akshay Kumar’s much anticipated film of 2015, Baby, an action thriller that has already grabbed eyeballs because of its high dose of action sequences.
The film, helmed by Neeraj Pandey, is all set to give viewers a visual treat of action like never before. Along with Cyril Rafaeli, Hollywood’s top action director (The Transporter, Hulk), Neeraj used the Octocopter Drone to capture fast-paced, large-scale action sequences across the desert of Abu Dhabi. The Octocopter is much like the normal drone but has advanced flexibility and payload capabilities.
Speaking on using this drone for Baby, Sudeep Chatterjee (Dop), ”Cutting-edge technology has expanded the imagination of film-makers today. Virtually impossible live-action sequences are now achievable thanks to devices like the Octocopter. Neeraj and I were...

Yash Raj is a production house that has given us some timeless classics and introduced many new directors. Once again, it brings us yet another with Ali Abbas Zafar in his debut film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Now with Rocket Singh and Dil Bole Hadippa being average fares, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan has got its fair share of expections banked on it. Beyond the success of the films, the lead cast of Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar are all set out to try their luck again with each of their last films Delhi Belly, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Tere Bin Laden working well. But sadly, this is far from a classic that the production house is renowned for nor is it the best work of the cast. We do need to give the director credit for bringing Imran, Katrina and Ali to the screen and even though...

Katrina Kaif stars in this weekend’s big release Mere Brother Ki Dulhan that will see the actress take on a new rock chic avatar and see her star alongside Imran Khan and Ali Zafar.
The Yash Raj production is a fun filled, romantic comedy that promises to keep you entertained throughout. The film tells the story of Kush, (Imran Khan) who has been set the task of finding his brother Luv (Ali Zafar) a perfect Indian bride. It is while searching for a bride that Kush comes across the zany London born girl Dimple (Katrina Kaif). If you think this is your same old love story then you are wrong because this topsy-turvy film sees Kush fall in love with Dimple. Will he be able to confess his love for her; well you will have to watch to find out.

He has done the romantic hero, played the sad scenes, the action stunts and has danced to the beat for some fabulous films including his first Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and I Hate Luv Storys. He has even done an indie adult comedy, a little film called Delhi Belly, which was a huge hit. Now with Yash Raj Films’ Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Imran Khan adds a flare for full on comedic situations to his list of his accomplishments on screen. Imran says that this role in Mbkd shows a completely different side to him as an actor. He has done funny before, but this made him reach and find out that he can do the loud, broad, flamboyant comedy scenes too. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, and also starring Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is a musical com-rom, which takes you on a fun-filled ride of humour and romance,...
