Licensing groups representing comedians, including the estates of Robin Williams and George Carlin, will not have to face a suit in sprawling litigation accusing them of monopolizing the market for the rights to the recordings of “superstar” comics.
A federal judge on April 5 dismissed Pandora’s countersuit against Word Collection and Spoken Giants, rejecting antitrust arguments from the audio company faulting the group for its alleged failure to assemble a viable comedy streaming service. U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi found that the comedians reasonably bargained collectively in the pursuit of higher royalties on top of getting paid for a copyright license that has historically been overlooked.
The dispute revolves around a feud between streamers and comedians pushing to change the landscape of compensation. The comics raise novel licensing theories claiming that they should be paid for writing their jokes, much in the same way that musicians are paid royalties for composing song lyrics.

“Unvaxxed Sperm” reads the poster held aloft by a woman standing outside the theater, and you know you’re in the right place: Joe Rogan’s new comedy club mecca. On Austin’s historic Sixth Street, Comedy Mothership enjoyed its opening night after two-and-a-half years of development.
Comedy Mothership is the comedian and podcaster’s effort to launch what he’s described as an ideal venue for comics and an effort to terraform the Texas capitol into a major live comedy hub. When tickets for the opening week of shows went on sale (for a surprisingly reasonable $40 per person), they sold out within minutes. Tickets are being re-sold online for $500.
“I’m drunk and on mushrooms in my new club!” exclaimed Rogan while wearing a rather odd Obi-Wan-like sweater. “This is as high as I’ve ever been onstage. I need to connect with this moment … You can’t fire me from my own club,...

Michael Lehrer, a comedian and improv actor best known for his work in ‘ Second City,’ and ‘Masters of the Internet,’ has died with the assistance of a doctor following a years-long battle with Als. He was 44.
His girlfriend and caretaker, Colette Montague, told the Chicago Sun-Times, “Michael died with dignity on his own terms. He was not suicidal at all. … Medical aid in dying was the hardest decision he ever made.”
Despite being diagnosed with Als, the comedian and sketch artist continued to perform at clubs while confined to a wheelchair. His bits included jokes about his life and his battle with the neurodegenerative disease.
Lehrer was a regular on ‘Kill Tony,’ a live comedy podcast based in Austin, Texas where Joe Rogan and Ron White often appeared. Rogan paid his respects to Lehrer in an Instagram post.

Pandora has been stopped from advancing an antitrust lawsuit against comedians, including the estates of Robin Williams and George Carlin, accusing them of monopolizing the market for the rights to the recordings of their routines.
A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed Pandora’s countersuit against the comedians and their licensing group Word Collection, finding the audio giant failed to connect the agency’s “impressive but short list of comedians whose work it licenses” to the company’s inability to assemble the “critical mass needed to offer a viable comedy streaming service, especially when it offers recordings by several thousand other comedians.” While she allowed Pandora another chance to fix its antitrust claims, the judge was skeptical it could sufficiently do so.
“The court doubts whether Pandora can allege the necessary facts at this stage,” writes U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi.

The estates of Robin Williams and George Carlin say Pandora has been “willfully” streaming the late comedians’ recorded routines without proper licensing or even “a fraction of a penny” in compensation to the trailblazing comics’ heirs.
In new copyright infringement suits filed Monday alongside related complaints from fellow funnymen Andrew Dice Clay, Ron White and Bill Engvall, the estates claim the comedians’ works “continue to be exploited, performed, broadcast, and streamed” across Pandora’s platforms without proper permission and without any “substantive response” to warnings from literary agency Word Collections over the last couple years.

“The Masked Singer” season 6 is making history in more ways than one. There is the introduction of the “Take It Off Buzzer,” which allows the judges to halt the performance if they are convinced they know the name of the famous face inside the mask. And this marks the first time that there is a costume that is a human, albeit an over-sized infant with one tooth.
The Baby is one of the two Wildcards who debuted on the second episode of the super-sized premiere. He replaces Mother Nature (Vivica A. Fox) who was sent packing at the start of the show on September 23. Before Baby sang a note, we thought Jack Black was hidden inside this elaborate costume but changed our mind when we saw him perform. Keep reading for all “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question “Who is Baby”?

"You can either work the field, or play the field." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official trailer for an indie football drama titled 12 Mighty Orphans, based on the true historical account of a young football team playing during the Great Depression (in the 1930s). The sports film – starring Luke Wilson, Martin Sheen, Vinessa Shaw, and Robert Duvall – tells the story of the Mighty Mites, the football team from a Fort Worth, TX orphanage who, during the Great Depression, went from playing without shoes—or even a football—to playing for the Texas state championships. Play on, boys! 12 Mighty Orphans is adapted from Jim Dent's bestselling book of the same name, and it also co-stars Wayne Knight, Jake Austin Walker, Treat Williams, Ron White, and Scott Haze. This doesn't look particularly good in any way, but it is the kind of underdog football story that some American viewers will eat up.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the Luke Wilson and Martin Sheen drama “12 Mighty Orphans,” an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film also stars Vinessa Shaw, Wayne Knight, Jake Austin Walker, Treat Williams, Ron White, Scott Haze and Robert Duvall. Ty Roberts is directing. The screenplay is written by Roberts, Lane Garrison and Kevin Meyer, adapted from Jim Dent’s bestselling book of the same name.

“There is a reason underdog stories hold so much weight in the popular imagination, and we know the Mighty Mites’ true story of triumph over adversity — set in a time when much of the country was suffering — will lift the spirits of audiences worldwide.

Sorry, music fans. It's officially the end of the road. As suspected last month, Roadies has been cancelled and won't be back for a second season. While Showtime doesn't rely on ratings like commercial channels do, this series failed to catch on with a large enough audience to warrant another season.Created by Cameron Crowe, the Roadies comedy TV series gives an insider's look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of the backstage workers. They're touring the United States with a successful arena-level rock band. Of course, some of the special’s most notable put-downs of the pop star have been publicized, including insults from the likes of Roast master Kevin Hart (“Justin’s Canadian. It was an emotional and happy day when comedian Ron White married his longtime fiancée Margo Rey in Dallas on Sunday. Hello, friends. Kurt here. Boy, oh boy. Where to start? In this very space, I've already been called out for snobbery for sticking it to lowbrow comedy and the people who love it, so I'm gonna try to keep the snark to a minimum. But I definitely stopped dead in my tracks when I walked into the gym this week and saw that the movie du jour was Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again, the straight-to-video sequel to Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie, a feature presentation of below-the-Mason-Dixon comics delivering below-the-belt jokes. My first impulse was to disregard the movie altogether, and just go with another day's title (okay, there was only one other day at the gym this week). Then, the more I thought about it, the more excited I got: this could turn out to be a whole lot of off-the-beaten-path fun, like getting a free glimpse...

Horrible Bosses is directed by Seth Gordon, a name to be watching out for in the future. Gordon actually had his big break with the 2007 feature documentary The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters. Since then, he.s been involved with popular TV series including The Office, Community, Parks and Recreation, and Modern Family.
Let.s set aside the notion that anyone with a job these days should be grateful, and instead assume we.re all employed, making the bad boss scenario much more relevant.
