Last month, Comixology Originals debuted the new 4-issue series Cold Iron, a supernatural thriller steeped in Celtic mythology, created by English writer Andy Diggle and Scottish artist Nick Brokenshire (featuring colors by Triona Farrell and letters by Simon Bowland). With issue 2 having just been released, we have an exclusive look at some of Nick Brokenshire's preliminary character art, along with a Q&a, where he talks about the characters and artwork:
"Celtic folklore and modern moxie collide as an ancient pact between worlds is broken. The sinister forces of Faerie have slipped their shackles, and the Black Dog walks abroad this night…
On the rural Isle of Man, aspiring singer-songwriter Kay Farragher dreams of escaping her humdrum life. But she’s about to get more than she bargained for – and some bargains are not to be trusted...

Fans of DC Comics and Sandman can sleep easy because the realm of the Dreaming is in good hands.
At the DC House of Horror panel at New York Comic Con, it was announced that the new creative team of Sandman Presents: The Dreaming will be none other than G. Willow Wilson and artist Nick Robles. Sandman Presents: The Dreaming launched a year ago with writer Simon Spurrier and artists Bilquis Evely, Matt Lopes, and Simon Bowland. But with Spurrier departing The Dreaming to write Sandman Presents: Hellblazer, Wilson and Robles will soon take up residence as proprietors of Dream’s realm.
Wilson told an appropriately surreal story on how she found out that Neil Gaiman and DC were handing her the keys of the Dreaming.
"I was on book tour for The Bird King," Wilson told the Nycc crowd. “Chris Conroy called me to put in contact with Neil Gaiman.

Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #3 is a hard boiled detective story...in the way only the Doom Patrol could deliver it.
A good adaptation will make you reexamine (or reevaluate) the source material. This is why Doom Patrol will endure as a great TV show. It revelled in its comic book-iness in a way that no other comics TV show would ever dare, and amplified the things about the comics that made them so unique. Gerard Way, Jeremy Lambert and Nick Derington have been turning that comics-uniqueness up in Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds, the Young Animal return for the series, and in this exclusive preview, Steve Orlando and Evan “Doc” Shaner step in to add to it.
Steve Orlando is quietly one of the best writers in the business and definitely one of the best things DC has going for it right now.

Review:
So I really enjoy Peter Milligan’s storytelling and I like Leandro Fernandez’s artwork but for whatever the reason, I just can’t keep up with this series. It seems to be full of erratic pacing, forced use of sexual situations for the sake of having them, and a plot that just doesn’t keep up much interest. We are living in a “post” 50 shades of Gray world, where everyone wants to write the next big sexual awakening story with a strong central female figure. “The Discipline” doesn’t really stray too far from this concept here in its first outing. Merging the pedigrees and lineage of Warren Ellis and James Bond seems like a brilliant pairing. For the most part the partnership succeeds, though I’m not ready to say I'm completely sold on this iteration of 007 just yet.
Sam Mendes' vision of Bond serves as the basis here, featuring an agent who balances a ruthless efficiency with a moderate amount of charm. This version of James resonates much more than his predecessors due to his flashes of vulnerability, small as they be. The problem being dealt with at the beginning of issue #1 is personal to James, and as such, the brutality and aggression he brings to this fight is intense. Without those moments, there isn't much substance to the character, but I really would have liked to have seen more of it.

For fans of James Bond and comic books, the wait has been excruciatingly long. Not since the mid 1990s, when an incomplete run of books adapting the film Goldeneye was published, have people who enjoy both Bond and comics been given a smidgen of consideration. This is all the more curious when considering how well the 007 brand sells worldwide and how visual the storytelling is when done right. Fleming’s novels were easily adaptable to the silver screen because his writing was so colourful and precise. Despite some obvious elements working in favour of such a project, it is only now, in November of 2015, that followers of the famous British secret agent’s exploits get to relish in a new monthly series, this one courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment, who signed an agreement in...

Flash Gordon
Writer: Jeff Parker
Artist: Evan Shaner
Colourist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Simon Bowland
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
After reading a single Flash Gordon comic, if you don’t want to be Flash, or at the very least, a part of his ensemble, then there is easily way too much excitement in your life. Flash Gordon represents this ideal of bewilderment or the excitement one receives from the unknown. In actuality, Flash is actually quite childish. He acts before he thinks, is utterly fearless, and enjoys a high sense of adventure. He represents the inner child that we encase within ourselves upon entering adulthood; something we cannot embrace as often as we might want to. Flash is not alone as he embraces his lack of fear. If it were not for the constant companions of Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov, Flash would probably be six feet under a long time ago...

One Week. Seven Days.
My plans for the next seven days are, if I must say, pretty epic. First off, I’m going to be doing a special column for Destroy The Brain, in which I finally watch and review Halloween III and Halloween H20, neither of which I’ve seen, making me a pretty poor horror movie fan. Along with those reviews, I’ll be talking about a pumpkin beer that I’m looking forward to big time as well. But then, at the end of the week, myself and a friend are going down to Saint Genevieve in southern Missouri for a brewery tour and to take in the very old and beautiful city at a time of year when the veil between past and present is thinnest. I even have have a costume all picked out: I’m going to be an executioner.
Get it?

This site is gonna be changing soon, getting a whole new look. It’s a big deal, as it hasn’t done so since I first started reading it two years ago, probably more than that though. But Comic Execution won’t change. I like this format too much. While I’d certainly like to expand my coverage of comics at Destroy The Brain, I think we’re lacking in general coverage as is, so until we have a bit more in the way of contributors, don’t expect much else besides the column and the occasional interview. I’d love to offer things like previews or contests but it’s proving difficult to get publishers to play ball. I really wanted to do a feature on the Alien/Prometheus/Predator crossover but Dark Horse never responded so instead I’m just doing basic reviews. Which is kind of nice...

I’ve turned over a new leaf. You see, I passed up an opportunity this week. I could’ve reviewed the much anticipated Grendel Vs The Shadow crossover and passed up on either Alice Cooper or the new Silent Hill comic, even though they actually fit better the horror movie format of Destroy The Brain. But I didn’t! So instead you get three reviews of three horror comics, and I’m going to try to stick more to horror comics from here on out, when I can.
Full disclosure; the Grendel Vs The Shadow comic is $6! Honestly, this pretty well scared me away from doing it even more. Sure, I probably could’ve just reviewed that and skipped Alice Cooper and Silent Hill, but that would’ve been even more of a betrayal of Destroy The Brain.
You can trust me to be honest about these things. Really, you can.

Who wants a free history lesson? No one? Too bad, you’re getting one anyway! Originally published in 1970, Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima’s manga entitled Lone Wolf and Cub is one of the most seminal works in the comic medium. It’s timeless tale, Ogami Ittō and his infant son wander Japan seeking revenge on the clans that wronged him. The saga has been adapted, translated and re-told for decades. From Samurai Jack to Road to Perdition, its influence has spread well beyond the bindings of its pages.
Looking to pay homage, writer Jim Zub tacks his own version onto the Lone Wolf and Cub mythos translating the story to the pages of Dynamite’s hottest property: Red Sonja. Zub’s version...

When people first start reading comics, they tend to gravitate towards certain characters with which they share a familiarity with. You’ve heard of Spider-Man, so why not read a Spider-Man comic and so on. Yet the deeper a reader delves within the comic world, one tends to leave the comfy confines of character and ventures out into the world of the creator. Creators are those unique individuals who’ve done wonders with the characters you know, that you have no choice but to see what they are going to cook up next.

While I was in NYC a couple of weekends ago, I ended up at a Gowanus Studios party out in Brooklyn (as you do), chatting with my friend Reilly Brown and some other excellent comics folks. In the middle of all this (all this being pizza and wine, la-di-la, because I’m too fancy for beer), I learned about Act-i-vate, which some of you may have heard of, but I sure hadn’t. That’s one of the things I love about comics – even if you’ve been a fan for years, or know quite a bit about it, there’s always so much going on that you’re never going to reach the end of learning new stuff about comics – the art and the industry. (And also, if you’re me at least, the genre being so large means you don’t have to feel like a bad fan...

You shouldn’t need a prologue comic or a prequel story to help you understand the story in Dredd 3D. Well, to be fair, you probably won’t need much to understand that whole thing. It’s rather simple. The dude in the helmet is the Judge. He gets to kill bad guys real good. There’s a rookie and a bad guy played by the wife from 300 with a big scar on her face that does not in any way detract from her aesthetic prowess. Bullets. Slow-motion. Drugs. Justice. Boom. Despite all this, the folks behind the film have put together a pretty rad prequel comic called “Top of the World, Ma-Ma” that tells the story of the film’s baddest babe and her lurid past. Created with 2000 Ad and written by Matt Smith with art by Henry Flint, Chris Blythe, and Simon Bowland, the “The Secret History of Ma-Ma” is a new 16 page collectible comic...

Don't know a lot about Judge Dredd? No problem! The kind folks at Lionsgate have got you covered thanks to a handy new comic book prequel to "Dredd" that they have released.
Called "The Secret History of Ma-Ma," the comic was created alongside 2000 Ad, written by Matt Smith and drawn by Henry Flint, Chris Blythe and Simon Bowland. It introduces the history of Ma-Ma Madrigal (played in "Dredd" by Lena Headey) and explains how she became the criminal mastermind she is in the present day of the film. It turns out Ma-Ma was just an average prostitute when she stumbled across the drug Slo-Mo, and the rest is history.
You can check out the full 16-page comic here.

I'm usually not a big fan of spin-off books, but I was pleasantly surprised by this comic. Set 100,000 years before John Carter arrives on Mars, Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom #3 is actually an interesting story about the history of the planet Mars and its inhabitants.
A lot of spin-off or tie-ins tell the stories set 1 day or 5 minutes before the beginning of the movie, or you're stuck with between the scenes stuff, where you already know the outcome of the story and immediately think "Wait, why am I reading this again?" But writer Robert Place Napton does a nice job of telling a tale that is very independent from the story of John Carter...

Release Date: August 18, 2010
Dynamite's The Lone Ranger #23 is Part 7 of a storyline entitled "Resolve." The first thing that catches your eye is the awesome John Cassaday artwork on the front cover. From page one, the story picks up as we see the Lone Ranger's foe Butch Cavendish torturing a sheriff that he has kidnapped. The sheriff's ordeal is shown throughout much of the book as the story alternates between those scenes and Lone Ranger and Tonto preparing themselves for a final showdown.
We also see a young Lone Ranger in this book, still a bit unsure of himself. Refreshingly, Tonto is portrayed as very capable and not constantly needing to be rescued by his "Kemo Sabe." This is clearly not your father's Lone Ranger and Tonto.
