This week, the most-watched YouTube video in Korea is by the girl group aespa (에스파) with their hit song ‘Supernova.’ This track has quickly become a sensation in Korea and, like much of K-pop, is poised to take the rest of the world by storm.
Aespa consists of four members: two Koreans, one Japanese, and one Chinese. Since their debut in 2019, they’ve been enchanting us with their music. The group’s name, “aespa,” is a combination of “æ,” which stands for “Avatar X Experience,” and the English word “aspect,” representing a duality. The name reflects their unique concept of meeting avatars and experiencing a new world.
Earlier this year in April, aespa pre-released the single “Illusion,” and they will be dropping their second mini-album titled “Girls” in June, alongside their second album “Life’s Too Short.” Additionally, aespa has joined the ranks of Warner Records, becoming the first K-pop group signed by the American label.

Grimes has some eccentric interests, but deep down, she might just be a Swiftie like the rest of us. In a recent interview, the musician revealed how “doing Taylor Swift cosplay” helped her write her song “California.”
Grimes sat down with K-pop girl group Aespa for Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians” series, chatting about their shared love of technology in art. Aespa’s Giselle mentioned her love of “Easily” and “California,” two piano-embellished tracks from Grimes’ 2015 album Art Angels. “How did you come up with that vibe?” Giselle asked.
“‘California,’ I think I was just doing Taylor Swift cosplay, but it’s also vaguely about how the media is obsessed with portraying you as this troubled soul or something,” Grimes responded. “I don’t know if you guys get that the same way in your media.”
Giselle agreed: “Oh, we definitely get that,” mentioning how the “media tries to portray us badly.

Netflix’s Resident Evil is kicking off a new era for the franchise on the small screen. After years of movie adaptations starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the franchise is shifting gears to tell a story unlike any we’ve ever seen on the big screen or in the games. This new Resident Evil series ditches Chris and Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, and Jill Valentine to tell a modern-day story about Albert Wesker and his family.
Starring the great Lance Reddick as the classic Resident Evil villain, the series not only gives us a complete reimagining of the character as a family man but also introduces us to his two teen daughters, Jade (Ella Balinska/Tamara Smart) and Billie (Adeline Rudolph/Siena Agudong), who have their own issues to deal with, like having to upend their whole lives to move with their father to...

The girls of Aespa are our new favorite villain-fighting video game characters. On Friday, the K-pop group celebrated the release of their second mini-album, Girls, by dropping the action-packed video for their title track.
Amid their signature choreography, the video sees the group — comprising Winter, Giselle, Karina, and Ningning — going up an elevator before transforming into characters going on different levels as each member defeats a different set of characters.
The video matches the theme of their mini-album’s cover art, which sees the girls as video game characters with superpowers.

K-pop girl group Aespa has been on a roll since their debut in late 2020. Following a year of virtual promotions due to the pandemic, Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning are taking on 2022 full force. The girls performed at Coachella in April, held a special showcase for fans in Los Angeles, and just this week, spoke at the United Nations’ High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
It’s almost hard to believe that Girls is only Aespa’s second mini-album. The record features five new songs, “Girls,” “Lingo,” and “ICU,” along with pre-released singles “Illusion,...

Aespa is ready to take the U.S. by storm. On Thursday, the K-Pop girl group released “Life’s Too Short,” the group’s first all-English single.
The song — which finds the girls celebrating the freedom to do whatever the heck they want, regardless of what others say — opens with a jaunty electric guitar lead before the song transforms into a soft bop, laced with a catchy chorus and danceable melody.
“I’m doing me regardless/And I don’t care what you say about it,” they sing in the chorus.

On Saturday night, management company and record label 88rising once again brought K-pop to the Coachella main stage, with an appearance by the girl group Aespa. The quartet — Karina, Winter, Giselle, and Ningning — debuted in November, 2020, in the thick of the pandemic, which hasn’t exactly afforded them many opportunities to perform live. That meant that Aespa’s Weekend Two appearance at Coachella — part of 88rising’s Head in the Clouds Forever showcase — was a highly anticipated event.

For this year’s Icons & Influences issue, we asked 10 artists to pay tribute to the women who have shaped their sound, provided an example, and inspired them to break down barriers.
In 2000, at age 13, BoA became the first solo artist to debut with Sm Entertainment. Years later, Aespa — the K-pop powerhouse’s latest girl group, with members Karina, 21, Giselle, 21, Winter, 21, and Ningning, 19 — grew up listening to her music. More recently, they’ve worked together on new music (including a remake of K-pop classic “Dreams Come True” produced by BoA), and...

Under Childhood is a column on children’s cinema—movies about and for kids.Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle is an anime musical that reimagines the story of Beauty and the Beast as two teenagers whose paths cross on a virtual reality platform, where both appear as their respective online personas—one a pink-haired pop star with a stirring voice, the other a wolf-like monster covered in bruises. Surreptitious meetings between the two provide some respite from their somber physical reality. But a slew of online and offline threats circumvent the chance for a deeper bond to develop. The desire for a multidimensional friendship sets the film into motion. The release of Belle arrives in the middle of a rather historic moment in which many screen-mediated childhood experiences are not only more ubiquitous but also mandatory, even state-mandated. For many children, the pandemic has made being online a requirement for participation in public and private spheres,...

In the ever-changing landscape of K-pop or the music industry in general, a group’s longevity is hard to predict. Shinee, known for their strong musicality, unique fashion sense, and distinct sound, have maintained success since debuting in 2008 with their hit “Replay.” Shinee is a group that cannot be overlooked when looking at the history of K-pop and their songs are easily identifiable with the distinct voices of each member.
When they first came into the public eye, Shinee caught everyone’s attention with their unique fashion sense and “boyish” appeal.
