Amazon’s MGM Studios has won a competitive bidding war to adapt Vanity Fair’s story surrounding a Texas serial killer, titled “True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him,” according to media reports.
Published in this September’s issue, the piece by Julie Miller walks through the 1981 abduction of Texas mother Margy Palm by serial killer Stephen Morin outside of a Kmart during the holidays. Following her abduction, Palm discussed her religious faith with Morin, eventually convincing him to let her go.
While Morin was sentenced to jail time for the abduction, a friendly relationship lingered between the pair, leading to Palm to visit Morin in prison on over a dozen occasions with Morin sending cards to Palm. Their friendship clearly had a profound impact on Morin, as he converted to Christianity after his conviction, before eventually dying at the age of 34 in 1985 via lethal injection.

Exclusive: After circling rights for weeks to the buzzy Vanity Fair article “True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him,” Amazon MGM Studios has locked them down, Deadline understands.
Executive producer and production attachments on True Crime, True Faith are premature and cannot be confirmed at this time.
While certain buyers had been looking at developing the piece for film, it seems that the Amazon adaptation will be a series. Details have yet to emerge about creatives involved behind the camera, and of course, discussions on casting have not started given the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Amazon has emerged the victor in another massive bidding war.
Following a competitive process, the Jennifer Salke-led streamer’s MGM Studios has won the rights to adapt the Vanity Fair story, “True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him,” which ran in the magazine’s September issue. The Julie Miller-penned piece reveals the story behind the 1981 abduction of Margy Palm by serial killer Stephen Morin outside a Texas Kmart. Though Morin never gained the pop culture notoriety of Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer, he was suspected of more murders than either was convicted of.
As Miller’s story showcases, Palm, who ultimately escaped, maintained a relationship with her captor. In fact, after Morin’s arrest, he began calling, writing and even sending Palm Christmas cards from prison. According to Miller, a friendship of sorts took hold, with Palm visiting Morin behind bars roughly 15 times,...

Where to Watch ‘Good Timing with Jo Firestone’: Peacock
Comedy often works better as a magic trick. A performer arrives with a set of distinct flourishes, carefully perfected to catch their audience by surprise. Puncture that illusion and you better have something just as good ready to take its place.
Fortunately, “Good Timing with Jo Firestone” does. It’s a documentary special that gets at what gets people laughing, all through the eyes of a group of senior citizens who are part of an online comedy class. Firestone — a comedian and host of multiple podcasts and New York live events — taught the class via Zoom through the pandemic. Earlier this June, the class convened in person to prepare for their first collective standup showcase.

Singer-songwriters Aubrie Sellers and Jade Jackson have combined their talents to become the duo Jackson+Sellers. The performers will release their debut album Breaking Point in October and gave a preview of that project Wednesday with their revved-up take on Julie Miller’s “The Devil Is an Angel.”

The winners of the 2020 Americana Honors and Awards were announced Tuesday morning, with the Highwomen and John Prine among this year’s winners. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Americana Music Association decided to forgo an in-person awards ceremony in 2020, instead announcing the winners via social media.
The Highwomen may have been mostly absent from the CMAs and Grammy Nominations, but the all-star quartet of Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby lead among Americana Awards winners in 2020. The group locked up prizes for Album of the Year for their self-titled debut,...

Kate Winslet said she is “grappling” with regrets over working with film directors Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, both accused of sexual misconduct with minors.
In a candid Vanity Fair interview with Julie Miller, Winslet admitted, “I have to take responsibility for the fact that I worked with them both. I can’t turn back the clock.”
“It’s like, what the fuck was I doing working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski? It’s unbelievable to me now how those men were held in such high regard, so widely in the film industry and for as long as they were. It’s fucking disgraceful. And I have to take responsibility for the fact that I worked with them both. I can’t turn back the clock. I’m grappling with those regrets but what do we have if we aren’t able to just be fucking truthful about all of it?...

All Aubrie Sellers wants for Christmas is to beat her family in a game of “Nertz.”
Work commitments mean the singer-songwriter is hosting Christmas in L.A. this year instead of going to see the family in Texas, but despite the location change, some traditions will stay the same.
“Everyone cooks and we play a lot of music and have guitars all over the house,” she says, over the phone in Los Angeles on a recent afternoon, “but what we really love is playing games.”

Even without the comfy chairs and floor lamp to set the mood, once Buddy and Julie Miller took the stage Wednesday night at Nashville’s City Winery it was as if they had invited the audience into their living room. Backed by a small group of musicians including Colin Linden on guitar, the couple delivered a brisk and blissful 45-minute set consisting mainly of songs from their recently released album, Breakdown on 20th Ave. South, which takes its name from the street on which their actual living room is situated.

For all her heartbreakingly honest reflection on nearly a decade of experiencing physical and emotional pain, along with grief, alienation and depression, Julie Miller laughs with more unfettered delight that one might expect.
The songwriting wife of musician and Americana stalwart Buddy Miller, Julie has battled the effects of fibromyalgia, a disorder that causes chronic pain in the muscles and bones as well as fatigue and mood issues. Yet, out of the ashes of loss, abandonment and melancholy, the songwriter has emerged like a phoenix for the sizzling Breakdown on 20th Ave.

Individually and as collaborators, married Nashville songwriters Buddy and Julie Miller have provided a steady stream of material for artists from Emmylou Harris and Levon Helm to Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert to record. But with Buddy also multi-tasking as a solo artist, producer and touring musician, and Julie slowed by years of chronic health issues, the couple have only released two albums together: 2001’s self-titled LP and 2009’s Written in Chalk. While the latter bore both their names, it was mainly cobbled together from Julie’s songwriting demos and...

French director Pierre Morel has come on board an untitled movie project about notorious French gangster and jailbreaker Rédoine Faïd.
Condé Nast Entertainment and Sentient Entertainment are producing the project, based on Julie Miller’s Vanity Fair story “How Hollywood Inspired France’s Most Daring Prison Escape.”
Faïd had been on the lam for three month after a daring helicopter escape from a penitentiary in July before he was re-captured last week. Faïd has an obsession with Hollywood films, which has inspired his career of armed robberies and breakouts from prison and led to him being called “The Jailbreak King.”
In 2013, Faïd was on the run for more than a month after he broke out of the Sequedin prison, using explosives to blast through five prison doors, holding four prison wardens hostage during the escape and employing the use of a getaway car, which he burned in Lille and left in another vehicle.

Kristen Bell isn't keeping any secrets about her sex scene in the new indie film, "The Lifeguard." In an interview with Vanity Fair's Julie Miller, Bell revealed that she wanted to make the moment with co-star David Lambert, then 19, as authentic as possible.
"We really shook hands and said, 'Let's make this graphic and real,'" Bell said. "Even prior to rolling, I think I just grabbed his hands and put them all over my chest and said, 'This is it. Don't be shy. Do what you do. I won't be uncomfortable. I trust you.'"

After she returns home and takes a job at a local swimming pool, Bell's character begins an...

"Style in the Movies" is the central theme of this year's TCM Classic Film Festival, opening tonight in Los Angeles with the world premiere of the new restoration of Cabaret (1972) and running through the weekend. For the AP, Lynn Elber calls up Liza Minnelli, who'll be there with Joel Grey and, if he can make it, Michael York: "Minnelli, whose turn as cabaret singer Sally Bowles captured a best actress Academy Award and cemented her young stardom, said making Cabaret was a joyful 'secret,' filmed in Munich and far away from meddling Los Angeles studio bosses. Director Bob Fosse 'got away with murder. We all did,' Minnelli said… 'We'd take chances, and the studio would send notes like, "Too cloudy. It will break up on drive-in (screens)." Fosse would read that out loud, tear it up and throw it over his shoulder — in front of the whole cast and crew.
