At about the time that you reach the half-way point, Best Man Down starts to seem like writer/director Ted Koland's attempt to sweep some sort of Sundance bingo contest. Of the two dozen or so elements that have come to characterize mainstream independent film (troubled teenagers, acoustic guitar music, Justin Long), at least half make an appearance here. Had it been played as a parody (think Not Another Independent Film), this might have been pretty hilarious, but as straight drama, Down doesn’t hit the mark.

People are often quick to judge others based on their limited views and exposure of the person’s actions and personality, before evening getting to know them. What’s even more shocking is that this biased public labeling has grown to include people’s friends and family, particularly in this modern world of social media. But even with the growing technology that’s modeled to help make communication easier, people are continuously keeping their personal lives a secret. That fear of revealing who you truly are to even those closest to you is a significant theme featured in first-time feature film writer-director Ted Koland’s new comedy-drama, ‘Best Man Down,’ which is now playing in [ Read More ]

The Man Who Wasn’t There: Koland’s Debut Lost In Its Own Drift
Poor Minnesota, it sure gets a bum rap when it comes to the movies. When its representation is not subjected to the Diablo Cody affect or used in name only (Contagion), it’s featured as the cold and isolated harbor of blandly unappealing stock types, at last as Ted Koland utilizes the state for his directorial debut, Best Man Down. A victim of title modification (originally, the film was to be known as Lumpy, which would have served it better in several ways, both good and bad), you wouldn’t be remiss in approaching the film as if it were a light, romantically tinged comedy, its new name suggesting or hinting that people like Ashley Judd should be littered throughout the cast. But Koland’s biggest, and only rewarding surprise, is that the film is decidedly...

When we think about wedding comedies, death is rarely part of the equation – especially among younger characters. Maybe if an old-timer croaks for some insane reason, then Maybe we can find a little humor in a more timely death, but usually our wedding party is typically safe.
That’s far from the case in Ted Koland’s dramedy Best Man Down, telling the story of Scott (Justin Long) and Kristin (Jess Weixler), two newlyweds who must delay their honeymoon after Scott’s best man Lumpy (Tyler Labine) drops dead at their wedding. Trust me, it’s not as morbid as it sounds, and that’s largely due to Koland’s balance of laughs and sincerity.
I ended up liking the film quite a bit, as both Justin Long and Tyler Labine made such a sad situation very revealing and inspiring, but there were a few questions raised throughout Scott’s journey.

The Minnesota couple's Phoenix wedding would be perfect -- all the friends and relatives gathered, a lovely hotel, a beautiful bride, love in the air.
But the best man, the aptly-named "Lumpy" (Tyler Labine), is out of control -- binge drinking, singing along with every song, a sloppy drunk in every sense.
"Why don't you call it a night?" the groom (Justin Long) begs.
"You're cuttin' off the Best Man?"
No point. Lumpy carries the party to his room, injures himself, staggers out into the desert in the middle of the night and dies.
It's "Best Man Down," but the bride, Kristin (Jess Weixler), is upset -- that her honeymoon, "under a palm tree, in a kaftan, sipping Mai Tais," is ruined. She's a self-medicating ball of stress, and Lumpy's bull-in-a-china-shop stampede through her "big night" has stripped all the sympathy from her. She is irked as all get out...

We’ve all been to a wedding where one of the guests gets a little too hammered for their own good, lighting up the dance floor with sloppy movements and encouraging dangerous amounts of shot-ripping – but what if he/she didn’t survive the night? The “Best Man” has a ton of duties in a wedding party, but staying alive typically isn’t a concern. Ted Koland’s Best Man Down introduces this nightmare scenario, tying together new beginnings and untimely ends in a way that’s both comical and emotionally revealing. There’s sometimes a difference between being someone’s “Best Man” and oldest friend, and Koland explores a friendship that is strong, but hasn’t been revisited for a brief period of time. Life can change in a heartbeat, even at the happiest of occasions.

When a couple gets married, they usually hop into a limo and leave for the Bahamas or some other kind of romantic spot that best celebrates their honeymoon. In Best Man Down, the couple (Justin Long and Jess Weixler) spends their honeymoon in the Midwest making funeral preparations after the wedding’s best man (Reaper‘s Tyler Labine) suddenly drops dead in the middle of the festivities.
What might have been a goofy wedding-centered comedy makes a severe turn with Labine’s on-screen death, pushing the film into (what looks like) a much darker drama with Long’s character examining his late friend’s life.
Written and directed by Ted Koland, Best Man Down opens on October 3rd.

If the world of wedding-based reality TV has taught us anything, it’s that a wedding can be ruined by a multitude of factors, from drunk relatives to the table linens not being the right shade of pink that the bride designated in her order. But I think having your best man die the night of the wedding in his hotel room really shut up even the women from Bridezilla in terms of its awfulness. The trailer for Ted Koland‘s Best Man Down wastes no time sparing you the icky details. Scott (Justin Long) and Kristin (Jess Weixler) have a beautiful wedding and are preparing to jet off to their honeymoon when they discover Scott’s best friend Lumpy (Tyler Labine) collapsed in his hotel room, dead of apparent alcohol poisoning. Instead of reveling in their marital bliss, the newlyweds have to fly home and use the money for Lumpy’s funeral, and...

For some reason, Ted Koland.s feature writing/directing debut Best Man Down flew completely under the radar through its development. The last time we heard about it, Justin Long had just joined the cast, but that was a couple of years ago back when the film was still called Lumpy. The surprise twist to the story is that Apple has released a new trailer for the film, and now I cannot wait to watch it. In the film, Long (For a Good Time, Call.) and Jess Weixler (The Good Wife) star as Scott and Kristen, a loving couple celebrating their wedding day. Unfortunately, Scott.s liquor-loving best man Lumpy (Tyler Labine) suddenly drops dead, and it really sticks a fork in everyone.s good mood. Scott decides to take the money he was going to use for and use the honeymoon and uses it to give Lumpy a proper...

Lately Justin Long has been taking a variety of low key films from the underrated high school reunion indie 10 Years to Funny or Die's first feature film iSteve and last year's raunchy, but adorable, comedy For A Good Time Call... Now another smaller film features the actor in the form of Best Man Down. Long plays the groom at a wedding where his best friend (Tyler Labine) dies overnight after the reception. The honeymoon is put on hold and Long's quest to give him a proper funeral begins to raise questions about the man who was supposedly his best friend. The tone seems a bit messy, but it feels like a touching tale. Watch! One of the most common questions I receive is: how do I know what'll be at the fest and where do I get my information? #38. Lumpy - Ted Koland First-time helmer Ted Koland's Minnesota-shot dramedy (featured on IndieWIRE - see the production pic above) happens to feature a good grab-bag of acting names (Justin Long, Tyler Labine, Addison Timlin, Frances O'Connor and Park City favorite Jess Weixler) and the logline sounds somewhat savoury - canceled wedding, followed by shock and surprise might come across as sincere, slightly dark and poignant. Depending on the film's tone, Lumpy might find itself in the Midnight section or Premieres category. Gist: The best man at Scott (Long) and Kristin's (Weixler) Arizona destination wedding, Lumpy (Labine) is the life of the party, until a long, indulgent night leads to his untimely death. Forced to cancel their honeymoon and fly back to Minneapolis to arrange for his funeral, Scott and Kristin meet Ramsey (Timlin) and learn that Lumpy isn't quite who they thought he was. Rosanna Arquette is about to make her first dramatic feature, Hemlock Drive, after making a couple of documentaries. The film is "about an eccentric mother in Connecticut who learns she is dying and brings her three adult children back home for a weekend." Part of the plot involves the matriarch getting her kids to throw a living funeral, Get Low style, although it sounds like this is meant to be a bit more funny than the climactic scene in that movie. When baby faced actor Justin Long isn't starring in mediocre romantic comedies like Going the Distance (just imagine how bad it would've been if Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day weren't in it) or pitching computers for Apple, he tends to display his more impressive acting range playing quirky or straight-laced characters in dramas and lesser known films. Long's current project, an independent comedy called Lumpy will be his next under the radar role to help showcase that talent.

For an actor who occasionally comes across as a bit generic and middle of the road, Justin Long is surprisingly good about taking independent films and strange bit parts in larger movies. He seems to work because he likes it rather than because he has to. Otherwise, how in the world would he have ended up as the gay pornographer in Kevin Smith's Zack And Miri Make A Porno or as Civil War era Nicholas Baker in The Conspirator? For his next part, he's not venturing quite as far out on the limb, but he is going noticeably more underground. The film in question is called Lumpy, and it's being directed by first-time helmer Ted Koland. The basic premise follows Long's character, Scott, who's dealt a crushing blow after his buddy, the title character and resident wild man in the group of friends, dies right before his friend's wedding.

Justin Long is known for being buddy-buddy with the Judd Apatow players.

Now with "Lumpy," a new indie comedy which Deadline reports is gearing up to shoot in Minnesota, he's returning to the oddball comedy of his roots.
Co-starring Jess Weixler ("Teeth"), Tyler Labine ("Sons of Tucson") and Addison Timlin ("Californication"), "Lumpy" is the directorial debut of TV writer/producer Ted Koland and follows an engaged couple (Long and Weixler) whose best man,...
