Toronto’s North By Northeast (Nxne) is expanding its film festival programing beyond music-themed movies to include films of all genres.
Nxne Film top brass revealed (23) the initial line-up, which includes the world premiere of the Canadian film Luck’s Hard (pictured) from directors Dave Brown and Daniel Williams.
The roster also features North American premieres for silent film La Voz De Los Silenciados (The Voice Of The Voiceless) by Maximon Monihan and horror-comedy Whoops! from Tony Hipwell and Miles Watts.
“Being the 20th Anniversary of Nxne and the 14th year for our festival, we wanted to broaden our horizons this year and add features which are not necessarily about music,” said Nxne Film programmer Cameron Carpenter.
The film festival runs from June 13-15. To view the full line-up click here.

Jordan Obita’s first goal for Reading settled an absorbing Championship encounter at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest’s opponents went above them in the table.
Two goals inside the first 15 minutes from Pavel Pogrebnyak and Kaspars Gorkss were cancelled out by Simon Cox and Darius Henderson strikes either side of half time.
Winger obita snached all three points for the visotors, however, and they hung on as Chris Gunter was sent off against his former club.
Reds boss Billy Davies made one enforced changed to the team that started the battling draw with table toppers Burnley. Captain Chris Cohen picked up a serious knee ligament injury, so Dan Harding deputized at left back. Greg Halford and Andy Reid were fit only for the bench after injury
Royals manager Nigel Adkins meanwhile made two changes after the goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. Chris Baird missed out with an ankle...

When Ohio-based metalcore unit The Devil Wears Prada tackled the undead apocalypse in their 2010 Zombie Ep, that release turned out to be one of the best horror-themed music projects of that year, even from a band not otherwise known for tackling horror themes. While those zombies have been (at least temporarily) vanquished, the band's creative energy was still coming from a similarly dark place when they dropped the full-length album Dead Throne the following year, accompanied by the music video “Vengeance” which made its world premiere on FEARnet (you can still watch it here). This year finds them very much in that same ominous groove with their album 8:18, which drops today from Roadrunner Records. There's not a zombie in sight this time around (although some more horror references do surface), but many tracks summon a dark and haunting mood, with the band often opting for a more suspenseful build than bursts of outright violence.

Forecasters predict snow and downpours in the coldest start to May in 70 years with grim effect on consumer spending
It was not meant to be like this. A bank holiday weekend with the mere hint of sun sees streams of motorists queuing to enter the Kentish harbour town of Whitstable. But yesterday afternoon the town's car parks were half empty as day trippers stayed away, opting not to brave the icy blasts whipping off the grey North Sea.
People were out walking around the town, but their hands were firmly in their pockets and their heads bowed against the wind. Few were spending money. Quaint cafes by the quayside waited for business; ice-cream kiosks where queues 30 deep have been known were devoid of customers. For many of the town's shopkeepers, dependent on the down-from-London brigade for their livelihoods, the bitter bank holiday weekend was a major setback after weeks of poor weather.

James MacArthur, "Danno" on the original "Hawaii Five-0," has died.
MacArthur, whose film and TV career spanned more than 40 years, died early Thursday (Oct. 28), his family says. He was 72.
MacArthur was the son of theater legend Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur and made his professional acting debut while he was still in high school. His early credits include Disney's "Swiss Family Robinson" and "The Light in the Forest" and episodes of TV drama anthologies like "Studio One," in addition to several Broadway plays.
He played a preacher in the 1968 Clint Eastwood western "Hang 'Em High," which was co-written and produced by Leonard Freeman. Freeman created "Hawaii Five-0" that same year and cast MacArthur as Detective Danny Williams, giving him a place in TV history as the object of McGarrett's (Jack Lord) famous catchphrase.

James MacArthur, the boyish actor who became a household name in the 1970s as Danny "Danno" Williams on TV's Hawaii Five-O, died Thursday, a family representative told People. He was 72 and his family was at his side at the time of his death, according to a family statement. No further details, including a cause, were given. Born in Los Angeles on December 8, 1937, MacArthur was adopted shortly after his birth by two living legends: actress Helen Hayes, considered the First Lady of the American stage, and her husband, Charles MacArthur, who, with collaborator Ben Hecht, wrote what some consider the greatest...

The latest addition to CBS’ remake of Hawaii Five-o looks set to be Battlestar Galactica’s Grace Park. The actress has been linde up to take on the the role of Kona Kalakua – the niece of detective Chin Ho Kelly, who is being playing by Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim.
Park’s character Kalakua is said to be a champion surfer in the Hpd police academy who is recruited to join the state police unit run by Steve McGarrett (played by actor Alex O’Loughlin). Park’s casting leaves only one major role left to be cast: that of Dan Williams ( of “Book ‘em Danno” fame) which was played by James MacArthur in the original series.
Hawaii Five-o is being produced by Fringe creators Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, along with CSI: NY executive producer Peter Lenkov, who wrote the pilot script based on a story all three conceived together.

For some reason this story almost slipped by us (oddly), but the latest thesp to join CBS' remake of Hawaii Five-0 is none other than Battlestar Galactica vet Grace Park (Boomer to you and I).
Park will trade her Raptor for surf swells, tackling the role of Kona Kalakua, niece of 5-0 detective Chin Ho Kelly, who you may recall, is being playing by Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim.
Park’s character is a champion surfer in the Hpd police academy who is recruited to join the state police unit run by Steve McGarrett, played by Alex O’Loughlin.
Truthfully, I wish I'd thought of this casting choice, since it seems sort of obvious. Park has the beauty, ethnicity, physicality and acting chops for a role like this, and it should be fun to see what she does with the role.
Here's hoping that the stories and writing are as good,...

As a fan of the original Hawaii Five-0, yours truly has been wondering for some while now about who would be cast as Steve McGarrett in CBS' resurrection of its classic crime drama, which ran from 1968 to 1980. After announcing it had picked Lost star Daniel Dae Kim to play the role of Chin Ho Kelly on Monday, today the network has found its McGarrett, and the role has gone to Australian-born actor Alex O'Loughlin.
For those of you unfamiliar with O'Loughin's work, he's probably best known as the star of the CBS' vampire series Moonlight.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, O'Loughin will play the role of the head of the fictional Hawaiian State Police division portrayed by Jack Lord in the original series. Apparently, O'Loughlin was an early favorite for the part.

After 12 seasons on the air, CBS' Hawaii Five-o finally came to an end. Unfortunately, it went out with more of a whimper than a bang.
Hawaii Five-o centers around Jack Lord and James MacArthur as detectives Steve McGarrett and Dan Williams who work for the fictional Hawaiian state police department. Others in the cast include Kam Fong, Herman Wedemeyer, Harry Endo, Zulu, Richard Denning, Al Harrington, Al Eben, Peggy Ryan, Glenn Cannon, Danny Kamekona, Moe Keale, Douglas Mossman, and Kwan Hi Lim. The show’s straightforward storytelling, fast-paced action and strong ensemble cast kept the show popular for years.
The last episode of the police series, number 278, is titled "Woe to Wo Fat." It was first aired on April 5, 1980. By this time in the show's history, both MacArthur (Danny "Danno" Willams) and Fong (Chin Ho Kelly) had left the series.

Jade Jagger is ready to be a grandmother. The 38-year-old fashion designer - who is in a relationship with DJ Dan Williams - admits it is strange that while many of her friends are settling down to have children, she feels she has passed that stage after having daughters Assisi, now 17, and Amba, 13, so young. She said: "It's more likely that I'll be a grandmother in the next few years than a mum again. I was a very young mum, I'd be happy to be a grandmother." Jade is currently focusing on her new Jade Jagger boutique in London and says she is planning to get the girls - her children with ex-partner Piers Jackson - involved.

Not all of us spent our high school years pining for the quarterback of the football team. Some of us were more drawn to the shy, sensitive types — the kind of guys who actually listen when you speak, and who have something interesting to say in return.
Like gay men, nerds have had to face down plenty of stereotypes over the years. Pocket protectors and bad haircuts? Ridiculous. A stutter and an obsession with computers? Not necessarily. Plagued by neurosis and insecurity? Well, okay, that last one’s pretty much spot on.
What is it about nerds that can be so sexy? It partly is their awkwardness in social situations. Honestly, who really wants to make small talk at a party anyway? Give me an actual conversation — and this is where nerds shine, the result of having read actual books and newspapers. The fact that a guy has never heard...
