French broadcaster Arte has joined Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s upcoming Movistar Plus+ series The New Years.
Arte and Spanish streamer Movistar Plus+ will co-produce the series, which is from Madrid-based Caballo Films — the production company Sorogoyen co-founded.
Production on the series began last year, and Arte has now snapped up French rights. Movistar Plus+ International will shop the title outside of Spain and France.
The series is set on New Year’s Eve every year for a decade, following a couple, played by Iria del Río (Riot Police) and Francesco Carril (Un Amor), who meet aged 30. Each episode follows updates their relationship and the trials they face to stay together, and the final shot is a single 40-minute take. “The narrative device allows you to consider change,” said Movistar Plus+ Director of Fiction and Entertainment Domingo Corral.

From Rkss, the directorial collective behind Turbo Kid, Summer of 84 and We Are Zombies, comes Wake Up, which sees a group of young activists set out to make a political statement by vandalising a home superstore as it closes. But their plan goes terribly wrong when they become trapped inside and must face a deranged security guard with a gruesome passion for primitive hunting. As the night fills with violence and terror, a desperate fight for their lives begins.
Very similar to last year’s Glasgow Frightfest film Hunt Her Kill Her, which saw a woman hunted in a store overnight, Wake Up sees a group of Gen Z activists looking to make a statement about the practices of “House Idea” a...

You’d be hard-pushed to find a teenager alive who wouldn’t jump at the chance to let loose in an empty Ikea, after dark. Especially when there’s paintballs and mass destruction on the cards. So it’s no surprise that Rkss stage such a fantasy, as the set-up for their Gen Z focussed somewhat-slasher; a half-baked cautionary tale on vapid activism, with a particularly gnarly killer at the helm.
The directorial collective, otherwise known as Canadian trio François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, are well-loved on the genre circuit. Heroes of ’80s pastiches Turbo Kid and Summer of 84 (the latter of which offers one of the most memorably downbeat finales of almost any horror this side of the millennium), their latest, Wake Up, is certainly more of a move towards the present. Doing away with much of the team’s stylish neon and bigger production values,...

Series from Atresmedia TV, Rtve, Movistar Plus+, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (“La Mesías”), Zeta Studios (“Elite”) and director Carlota Pereda and Morena Films (behind Sundance hit “Piggy”) will unspool or be unveiled at the Berlinale. They underscore the breadth and depth of Spanish TV output:
“Death to Love,”
Carlota Pereda dazzled at Sundance with first feature, “Piggy.” Now, Pereda’s at the Berlinale Co-Pro Series on Feb. 20 with her debut series, “Death to Love,” in which afemale vampire struggles over centuries to end a toxic relationship with her vampire female lover and culminates in a modern-day climax. “A visceral and romantic proposition,” Pereda says.
“Dressed in Blue: Veneno Season 2,”
The Sundance world premiere “La Mesías” sealed the standing of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi as most probably the coolest creative duo in Spain. This time around, they produce, with Mikel Rueda, a director on “Veneno,” and Claudia Costafreda and Ian de la Rosa,...

The filmmaking trio collectively known as Rkss (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell) put their stamp on the slasher subgenre with the brutal Wake Up, which made its World Premiere last week at Fantastic Fest (our review) before heading to Sitges this week.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Rkss after the debut about their slasher with a severe mean streak.
Wake Up is written by Alberto Marini (Sleep Tight), based on an original idea by Martin Soudan, and stars Benny O.Arthur (Sky and Canal + Django series), Jacqueline Moré (The Anarchist’S Dream), Charlotte Stoiber (Downfall), Kyle Scudder (Netflix’s upcoming In Love All Over Again), and newcomers Alessia Yoko Fontana and Tom Gould along with celebrated Irish film and television actors Turlough Convery (Black Mirror, Killing Eve) and Aidan O’Hare (My Sailor, My Love).

The filmmaking trio collectively known as Rkss (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell) tend to toggle between two distinct tones of horror: infectious, gory horror comedies and mean horror that packs a punch. With two features screening at Fantastic Fest, We Are Zombies showcased the directors’ playful side. At the opposite end of the spectrum lies Wake Up, Rkss’s delightfully mean-spirited slasher.
Six Gen Z activists hide in a labyrinthine big box furniture store, biding their time until it closes for business to deface the property in protest. Once the lights go out and the exits are locked, the group spreads across the massive maze-like layout to maximize the damage. Despite some adolescent tension, their plan begins without much of a hitch. That changes when newcomer Karim (Tom Gould) isn’t careful and catches the attention of drunk security guards Jack (Aidan O’Hare) and his volatile, psychologically disturbed...

Filmmakers Rkss show their mean streak in "Wake Up," a barbarically nasty hunt-and-stalk flick for the sake of viciousness. It's not especially complicated, nor does that matter. "Wake Up" is foaming at the mouth with primal thrills that do not care for mercy. Rkss presents their contemporary riff on "The Most Dangerous Game" in a department store setting, taking aim at unlucky Gen Z'ers who become trophy kills. Nothing matters but survival; a refreshingly focused take on apex predator material that veers into sickening slasher territory.
The massacre takes place in a furniture department store — think Ikea, complete with a meatball food fight. Social media activists hide themselves throughout the showroom floor for an elaborate protest stunt that will expose Idea's cruel deforestation practices, then pop out undetected. They write graffiti messages, deface company property, and even splatter leftover organs from a butcher's shop in the shower displays, not...

Inspired by the simmering one-man rebellion that kicked off a tremendous tide-change in Barcelona, writer-director Marcel Barrena (“Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea”) and Spain’s The Mediapro Studio have begun filming “The 47.”
Tms has released first look images. The premise centers on social activist bus driver Manolo Vital, played by three-time Goya Award winner Eduardo Fernández (“Smoke & Mirrors”), as he grows increasingly outraged at the abject neglect faced by immigrant communities outside the city’s center, whose neighborhoods, peeled by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia, had only just achieved running water.
Stonewalled by the City Council, Vital seizes a bus used on Barcelona’s #47 line and extends its route to Torre Baró in an attempt to prove that the vehicle can safely service the outlying communities in need.
“What the film shows is that this good man tried to convince everyone that it was feasible. The contempt of...

El 47, the latest feature from Spanish production powerhouse Mediapro Studio, is kicking into gear with cameras set to roll on the pic in Barcelona in the coming days.
Directed by Marcel Barrena (Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea), the pic is billed as a “tribute to the working class and to the men and women who built our cities, not only physically but also culturally.” The pic tells the story of Manolo Vital, a bus driver who helped create modern Barcelona during the city’s 1970s boom. Barrena co-wrote the pic with Alberto Marini (El desconocido).
Synopsis reads: In the 1960s and 70s Spain, rural Barcelona was built, for the most part, by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia who, although they had built the neighborhoods with their bare hands, were still not considered part of the city. Spanish SVOD platform Movistar+ wowed viewers at the Málaga Film Festival on Tuesday with the first episode of “La Unidad Kabul,” the third season of its special police unit thriller.
The latest instalment is set in Afghanistan, where Spanish agents are on a new mission to meet an infiltrator with information about a possible attack in Europe.
The elite unit is in the war-torn country as the U.S. ends its 20-year occupation, leaving Kabul to be taken by the Taliban. As Spanish authorities begin the evacuation of civilians and collaborators, the agents get caught up in clashes between the Taliban, Mujahideen and Islamic State-Khorasan Province (Isis-k) forces.
Speaking in Málaga, Dani de la Torre, who created the show with Alberto Marini, said it was important for the creative team to focus specifically on Afghanistan this season. “It was not that long ago – in 2021 that the West abandoned Afghanistan and...

Prolific Andalusian production company La Claqueta has tapped award-winning screenwriter-producer Alberto Marini to direct rural thriller “Últimos días de caza” (“Last Days of Hunting.”)
Penned by José Cabeza, co-scribe on 2016’s “7 Years,” Netflix first Spanish original movie, “Last Days of Hunting” has a completed screenplay and has initiated financing.
The aim is to close the financing phase during this year and begin shooting second quarter 2024, probably in northern Spain.
“Last Days of Hunting” leads a growth-period for Seville-based La Claqueta, which is raising the ante in terms of film production ambitions.
“This is a noir that revolves around torpid masculinity; it is the story of volcanoes that don’t know how to release lava when they should and that explode inwards,” said Marini, who debuted as a helmer with 2015 horror feature “Summer Camp.”

The feature film debut from writer and director Pedro C. Alonso, Feedback stars the excellent Eddie Marsan as Jarvis Dolan, a radio personality who encounters a terrible night when the station he works at is terrorised by a group of masked stalkers.
There’s something I get a real kick out of in film, be it survival horror, thriller or drama, is when we spend the length of the film in one single location. That is the case here, with Feedback, with the radio station as our single location. This strong setting along with a top notch cast go a long way into kicking things off strong. Iberseries, one of the Spanish-speaking world’s first international TV festivals, has launched an online version of what would have been some of the key events at its originally planned on-site first edition in Granada, Southern Spain, due to have run in late May.
Set in the run-up and dates of that event, which was dashed by Covid-19 pandemia, the initiatives cut two ways: Two, a presentation of Movistar Plus’ banner series “La Unidad,” and an Iberseries Pitch session, forefront excellence in drama series creation. A late-May panel aimed at an industry audience, Panorama of Platforms, Channels, will see four of the biggest players in Spain and Latin America set a road map for industry re-launch with post Covid-19 re-opening in Spain and Latin America.

Madrid — Movistar Plus, the pay TV/Svod arm of giant European telecom Telefonica, is upping the ante. On New Year’s Eve, it announced a first 2020 release line-up – more titles may be added – that has two big swings, more emphasis on action, and a larger number of comedy and non-fiction plays.
2020’s 14 new series or seasons marks an all-time company record.
That, however, is just Movistar Plus, and does not count any big series in the second half of the year, or any that it might put into development via a new joint production venture, announced in September, with broadcast network Atresmedia.
Also, there may be more feature films, following on the company’s first original movie, Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War,” which earned a gratifying €11.0 million at the Spanish box office this year, and established the pay TV unit as one of the very few companies in Spain...

Beta Film has added two more high-profile Spanish scripted series from Movistar Plus to its lineup ahead of Mipcom. The Germany-based content outfit has a history of selling Spanish drama globally, and has snagged the rights to action-thriller “La Unidad” and drama series “Tell Me Who I Am.”

Beta and Movistar Plus have a co-production and distribution deal in place, with recent successes including Alex Pina’s “The Pier,” Leticia Dolera‘s “Perfect Life” and Paco Leon’s “Arde Madrid.”
Beta Film will bring the two new dramas to market for the first time at Mipcom, the biggest event on the international TV calendar. Both “La Unidad” and “Tell Me Who I Am” are in production, and the focus at Mipcom will be pre-sales.

One of the biggest international plays to date for Movistar +, the pay TV/Svod unit of telecom Telefonica, “La Unidad” re-teams director Dani de la Torre and writer Alberto Marini (“Sleep Tight”), who found audience and international sales success with the 2015 Venice-selected “Retribution” (“El Desconicido”), which won Spanish Academy Goya Awards for new director, editing and sound, as well as six other nominations.

Helmed by longtime Filmax producer Alberto Marini, in his directorial debut, the film follows similar story beats to some of his most well-known films including the [Rec] franchise and The Last Days.
Looking for fun times as counselors at a European summer camp for children, four Americans never suspect their first experience abroad might be their last. Summer Camp can mean a lot of things. I never went because I was always afraid that the reality would forever soil my idyllic idea of camp from “Meatballs”, the Michael J. Fox TV movie “Poison Ivy”, and “Ernest Goes to Camp”, and also because I was chubby, introverted, and awkward.
Thank goodness for adulthood, at least the chubby part got a little better. Of course, I also had Friday the 13th to go by as well. It took a few installments before Jason started going after the kids, usually it was the counselors that got the business end of the machete.
At “Summer Camp”, these counselors are Americans who signed up to teach English to campers in Spain. No cabins here.

*full disclosure: Lions Gate provided a DVD screener of this film. Director: Alberto Marini. Writers: Alberto Marini, Danielle Schleif. It's summertime, and who doesn't want to be dragged into the woods for a good old-fashioned creepy camping tale? This viewer was sure on board. Unfortunately, someone forgot to bring the marshmallows. Summer Camp is brought to you by one of the producers of Annabelle and The Conjuring, which might sound tempting, but if you want a real scare just grab your sleeping bag, park yourself in front of a campfire and call it a night because this film is much more of a comedy, and not the most enjoyable one at that. The story revolves around four twenty-something Americans working in Spain at a kids' camp. The group soon discovers that an inexplicable virus is spreading, causing fits of rage in both animal and human alike. One by one, the...

El Gigante: Press Release: "Raven Banner has boarded Luchagore Productions, El Gigante, directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero for worldwide rights, which was featured in the current edition of The Frontieres International Co-Production Market. They will also serve as Executive Producers.
The film tells the story of a deranged maniac in a Luchador mask named El Gigante who wrestles his prey to the mat in a grisly entertainment ritual of thrill-packed culinary prep for his cannibalistic family.
The deal was negotiated by Luchagore's Raynor Shima and Raven Banner's James Fler and Michael Paszt.

Extinction
Written by Miguel Ángel Vivas and Alberto Marini
Directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas
Spain/Hungary, 2015
Some films just can’t stick to their strengths. There are some good jump scares inside Extinction, the post-apocalyptic zombie film from Spanish director Miguel Ángel Vivas, adapted from a novel by his countrymen Juan de Dios Garduño, but Vivas (who co-wrote the script with Alberto Marini) is too keen to turn his film into a melodrama to focus on the fright. The result is a plodding zombie drama with too much tonal inconsistency to succeed as either a character study or a terrifying gorefest.
In fact, a majority of the scares are in the prelude, which at least serves the function of getting Extinction off to a promising start. In a frenetic sequences dominated by handheld shots and dizzyingly quick cuts, Vivas gives the audience a hint of the world which defines his...

I figured if most zombie movies are going to repeat themselves I might do so as well - the genre, such as it is, is pretty tired. More so than other subgenres of the horror field, things are usually grand and epic shoot-em-ups (replacing the Western's traditional, unreflected-upon slaughter of Native Americans with the mowing down of the hordes of undead), tonge-in-cheek comedies, or attempts to do something new and interesting with the shtick. In fairness to Extinction, writer/director Miguel Ángel Vivas (2010's Kidnapped) is at least attempting something unique. Along with writers Alberto Marini, and based on a book by Juan de Dios Garduño, the concept takes a siege film, a family drama, an outbreak scare, and a film about self-sacrifice, and mashes it...
