What are the movies that allow you to have a good rest watching them without thinking too much about their hidden meanings? When Reddit discussed it, the verdict was that the most fruitful decade for such flicks was the 1980s, when lots of classic action films were released.
Here are 7 actions of the 80s to relax while watching them.
Die Hard (1988)
Bruce Willis’ cultish flick is one of the greatest action movies of all time. Following a police detective who starts a one-man war against a gang of ruthless thieves, it gave the world one of the brightest action heroes in movie history, John McClane.
First Blood (1982)
Another action star of the 80s is Sylvester Stallone, the lead of the action-packed Rambo franchise. Its first installment centered on John Rambo, a war veteran, who is forced to rely on his combat skills while he is surviving a massive manhunt held by police.

Hollywood has no shortage of action movies and has cooked up some of the best action films of all time over the years. Bruce Willis’ Die Hard surely occupies a high place in Hollywood’s Hall of Fame for the genre. Not only did it branch out an incredible franchise, but the movie also inspired a bunch of other iconic movies like Under Siege, Speed, The Rock, and many more.
Die Hard (1988) | 20th Century Studios
Among these movies is Sylvester Stallone’s 90’s classic, Cliffhanger. Based on Willis’ top-of-class action film, Stallone’s flick would have never happened had the action thriller not been released.

While Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”
However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…
It’s a line that made audiences laugh, but, in his book “The Last Action Heroes,” writer Nick de Semlyan interviews Harlin, and...

The shortest distance between two points is popularly believed to be a straight line. But if one of those points is the chin, cheekbone or torso of some sneering and/or psychotic Korean gangster, the shortest route is actually the arc described by either one of Korean megastar Don Lee’s fists, here playing the fists of Detective Ma, protagonist of the ludicrously watchable “Roundup” series.
“The Roundup” and “The Roundup: No Way Out” the first two sequels to 2017’s “The Outlaws,” seemed to inch a little closer each time to the platonic ideal of star-driven action-franchise purity. Now, with Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok) and his fists directed by Heo Myeong-haeng, a stunt choreographer who worked on Lee’s breakout “Train to Busan,” the fourth episode gets closer still. “The Roundup: Punishment” minimizes unnecessary originality, while gloriously maximizing the opportunities for Lee to crack wise, or look aggrieved and a little bored,...

Tony Ganios, best known for playing Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in Porky’s, is dead at the age of 64. According to the actor’s fiancée Amanda, Tony was admitted to a hospital in New York on Saturday with a severe spinal cord infection but passed away of heart failure following surgery on Sunday.
“The last words we said to each other were, ‘I love you,’” Amanda wrote on X. “Love is an understatement. You are everything to me. My heart, my soul and my best friend.“
He made his feature-film debut in Philip Kaufman’s coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wanderers, which followed a group of Italian-American teenagers and their power struggles against rival gangs in the Bronx in 1963. The film was a success upon release, but its popularity grew over the decades as it developed a passionate following, even leading Warner Bros. to re-release the movie in 1996.

Tony Ganios, the actor who made his film debut in Philip Kaufman’s 1979 coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wanderers and played audience favorite Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in the 1980s Porky’s sex comedy franchise, died Sunday following surgery at a hospital in New York. He was 64.
His death was announced on social media by his fiancée, Amanda Serrano-Ganios, who said that the actor fell ill last week, was hospitalized Saturday with a spinal cord infection, and passed away Sunday of heart failure.
Cast as one of the Bronx Italian-American street toughs in the 1963-set The Wanderers, based on the novel by Richard Price, Ganios became, for much of the ’80s, a go-to actor for directors looking for a touch of East Coast flavor. Ganios re-teamed with his Wanderers co-star Ken Wahl for a recurring role as a mob lawyer on Wahl’s 1987-90 crime series Wiseguy.

Samuel L. Jackson is the highest-grossing actor of all time. The iconic actor, who made his feature film debut in 1972 independent drama Together for Days, has seen his name so far attached to 142 films, which have amassed more than $27 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
The big reason behind the eye-watering figure is Jackson’s frequent appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wherein he portrays Nick Fury. However, when fans think about the veteran actor, the first character that pops into their mind, more often than not, is Jules. A hitman, who tends to deliver sermons before killing his targets.
Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction
It won’t be far-fetched to say, Pulp Fiction is his career-defining stint. Yet, as far as Jackson’s opinion is concerned the 1994 cult classic sits below another crime thriller.

"Air Force One" is my favorite "Die Hard" knock-off. Directed by the late Wolfgang Petersen and released in 1997 (when the Cold War was newly over and America was an unrivaled superpower), the film features terrorists hijacking — what else — Air Force One. President James Marshall (Harrison Ford), a Vietnam War veteran, personally defeats them.
Making the President of the United States into John McClane, the quintessential "in the wrong place" everyman? That's some ridiculous high-concept moviemaking I can get on board with.
Now as for the villains, Gary Oldman does his best Hans Gruber as Egor Korshunov. We know what he wants: a restored Soviet Union. When he's called about his demands, he waxes poetic about seeing "The capitalists dragged from the Kremlin," and he throws in Marshall's face about how America has "given [Russia] to gangsters and prostitutes."

‘Mayhem!’ Review: Nassim Lyes Stars In A Revenge Thriller That Gives ‘John Wick’ A Run For His Money
In case it wasn’t painfully obvious, the majority of revenge thrillers in existence tend to stick to a crystal clear formula made even easier to follow by modern classics like “John Wick,” “Taken,” and “Oldboy“; a tragic event upends the life of a seemingly average citizen, said citizen goes after the perpetrators, said citizen’s special set of skills may be unveiled in the process and the goal is eventually achieved amidst a ballet of violence coupled with the added bonus of John McClane-esque quips along the way.

Riggs and Murtagh. Tango and Cash. Starsky and Hutch. John McClane. Frank Bullitt. Dirty Harry Callahan. While those are all tough movie cops, none of them are as hard as nails was perhaps the toughest, most dangerous movie cop of all time… Frank Drebin as played by Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

“Can we have a healthy debate? Can we make the argument to you of why it’s a Christmas movie?” Peter asked Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont on a recent episode of his podcast, A Cinematic Christmas Journey.
Jan is a skeptic on the fact if it is a Christmas movie, but Peter held a strong argument, noting that the movie starts and ends with a Christmas song, and there are Santas everywhere.

In 1988, Die Hard hit movie theaters and became an instant success. Not only did it catapult Bruce Willis to superstardom, it also reinvented the action genre. Throughout the 80s, action movies had inflated and started to become overblown and unrealistic. Of course, they were still widely popular. However, it was evident that the genre needed a revamp. And Die Hard served as just that, showcasing a type of action hero cinema had never seen before in John McClane. After this glaring success, Die Hard spawned a total of four sequels. While some missed the mark, others managed to capture...

Even with its shortcomings, Marvel's "What If...?" season 1 is the closest the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to realizing the true potential of the multiverse in terms of storytelling. The hope, then, is that the animated series will dispense with the training wheels entirely with its next batch of episodes and really have fun with the concept, rather than restricting itself to re-imagining events from MCU movies and TV shows past. And so far, it appears season 2 will do just that, with an episode inspired by the Neil Gaiman-penned Elizabethan era comic arc "1602" and another one centered on a brand-new character in the form of the Mohawk hero Kahhori.
Of course, there's still plenty of room for new stories featuring old favorites, including treasured supporting players and frequent comic relief sidekicks Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). Those two specifically will team up in "What If.

Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" certainly has one of the most eclectic casts of any '90s blockbuster. On one hand, you have a variety of established actors. Then-beloved action hero Bruce Willis was the film's centerpiece, propped by British thespians like Gary Oldman and Ian Holm, both of whom had garnered recognition in major Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, you have a variety of unknown variables: Milla Jovovich, a young Russian model just getting her start on film; Chris Tucker, a hyperactive comedian slowly on the rise after "Friday," which also just so happened to feature "Fifth Element" co-star Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., an actor-turned-wrestler-turned-actor-again. Besson's call sheet of obscure talents goes on and on. However, it is exactly the director's ethno-galactically diverse, if often aesthetically disparate, vision for the film that makes the cast of "The Fifth Element" fit surprisingly well together.

Bruce Willis Everyman Appeal When we think about the appeal of Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard, it’s his everyman quality that truly resonates. Audiences could see themselves in McClane, a real person with real struggles, rather than just another untouchable action figure. Bruce Willis brought a sense of relatability to the character, which was a breath of fresh air in an era dominated by larger-than-life heroes. But John McClane is an everyman, an ordinary, hard working American, and every character in the film feels real. This authenticity is what made his portrayal so memorable and why it...

On paper, the action and horror genres seem like they'd be strange bedfellows. After all, the general aim of action films is to provide adrenaline-fueled thrills, while horror movies are intended to disturb, scare, and unnerve.
Yet in practice, the genres blend far better and far more often than may be expected. I can still remember schoolyard chums excitedly recounting the ways in which Bruce Willis' John McClane dispatched terrorists in "Die Hard 2" (such as when he shoves an icicle into a baddie's eye), kills that would be wholly appropriate in a "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Hollywood producers certainly saw the connections; Renny Harlin, who directed "Die Hard 2," won the gig after making horror films like "Prison" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master."
In 2023, the action and horror genres have long been considered an excellent peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, with much cross-pollination happening within them.

One of the most touching moments I've seen in a movie this year arrived at the end of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," when Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood returns to help nurse our badly beat-up hero back into shape. We learn earlier in the movie that the source of their estrangement was the death of their son Mutt (Shia Labeouf), who settled a dispute with his headstrong father by enlisting in Vietnam. Indy blamed himself for Mutt's demise and took to the bottle. Unwilling to watch her husband drink himself to death, Marion left.
That the film ends on an upbeat note is hardly a surprise. The Indy films are escapist entertainments meant to send you out of the theater on a high. But a part of me worried that we might get a throwaway off-screen appearance like Holly Gennaro bawling out John McClane over a payphone...

Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Wills on the 35th anniversary of the legendary action film ‘Die Hard’, posted a heartfelt tribute to her husband. The Hollywood star stopped acting back in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, but has since then become an action icon due to his role as John McClane in ‘Die Hard’. Amongst a plethora of other big films he’s done, the actor is well known for his roles in ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Sixth Sense’ and ‘Unbreakable’.
Taking to Instagram, Emma Wills shared a video of the family visiting a mural for the 1988 action blockbuster. She captioned: “Back in 2018 (when these videos and pictures were taken) we took Mabel and Evelyn to the Fox lot to peek at the archives as well as see the larger-than-life mural of their dad.”
She added, “This mural was unveiled in front of Bruce back in 2013 to commemorate Die Hard’s 25th anniversary.

Los Angeles, July 15 (Ians) Hollywood star Bruce Willis has said that crew members on the set of ‘Die Hard’ (1988) were concerned that he had died after he completed a stunt on the first day of filming the project.
The actor, now 68, played police officer John McClane in the beloved film and its subsequent sequels, which saw the character face various challenging situations, reports Mirror.co.uk.
He’s spoken in the past about the stunts in the film and it’s been claimed that Bruce “nearly died” taking on one of them whilst working on the first instalment in the series. His experience working on the film has been recalled in Nick de Semlyen’s newly-released book ‘The Last Action Heroes’, which goes behind-the-scenes with different actors.

It would be easy to dismiss Cliffhanger as little more than a fun riff on the Die Hard formula, with the action switching from the heights of Nakatomi Plaza to the Colorado Rockies. After all, the film largely pits Sylvester Stallone’s Gabe Walker—often wearing little more than a t-shirt on the mountain in place of John McClane’s vest—against a crack team of international terrorists led by John Lithgow, who is in deliciously deranged form as a psychotic military intelligence expert turned thief.
The comparisons are not helped by the fact that Cliffhanger arrived at a time when the Die Hard formula was being milked for all its worth. In the 12 months prior to its release, moviegoers had been served up the likes of Passenger 57 (Die Hard on a plane) and Under Siege (Die Hard on a boat), with Speed (Die Hard on a bus) hot...

The Best Man is a film directed by Shane Dax Taylor starring Brendan Fehr, Dolph Lundgren and Luke Wilson.
The Best Man: an 80s style action movie that brings back some nostalgia, piety and the best feelings.
80s action returns to rescue one of its lesser-known myths, Dolph Lundgren.
One of those action movies in which, mysteriously, we all agree there’s something missing.
The Best Man Movie Review
The Best Man is one of those bad action movies, a B-series video store film from which, deep down, we still try to get something good, especially due to the nostalgia that Dolph Lundgren brings us and the Die Hard-style eighties classicism that the whole set exhales, from its borrowed script to its protagonists, who also seem taken from another era in which cinema, at least, seemed different.

Move over, John McClane. There’s a new action star in town. As Hollywood reels from the ongoing WGA writers’ strike, a new project starring Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson is coming. Bride Hard is an action comedy coming from Expendables 2 director Simon West. According to Deadline, the plot follows “badass secret agent Sam (Rebel Wilson) who has been tasked with one of her hardest missions yet – being a Maid of Honor for her childhood best friend.”
Shaina Steinberg wrote the script from a story by Steinberg and CeCe Pleasants. Balcony 9 Productions is producing and financing, with Joel David Moore, Max Osswald, Cassian Elwes, and Colleen Camp producing. Bride Hard heads to this year’s Cannes market for a potential sale.

Imagine Jason Voorhees wreaking havoc in the aisles of a Crystal Lake S-Mart. The only thing standing between him and the gruesome murders of the teenage employees working there is Ash Williams. Who also works there. Housewares! What a scene! A scene that never happened. Actually, it did happen in both a comic book and a script for a movie we never received. Oh, and Freddy Krueger was there too. Using Jason to gain access to the Necronomicon so that he could read its passages and become more powerful than ever.
There’s so, so much more to Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash and it’s all been covered by Bloody Disgusting before. The reason I bring it up today? Were it not for the alleged unwillingness of competing studios to have their character be the loser of the three way fisticuffs, it totally would have worked. Not only do I believe Freddy vs.

Soon, two of the biggest and most committed action stars will face off in "John Wick: Chapter 4." Hong Kong martial arts legend Donnie Yen is set to go up against Keanu Reeves' seemingly invincible hitman in a showdown that promises to be a highlight in a movie full of meticulously-crafted action. And despite being nearly 60 years old, Yen is as popular and limber as ever. He's also still passionate about his roles, maintaining a determination to go above and beyond, a trait he's possessed since his days spent working for Hong Kong kung fu director/choreographer Yuen Woo-ping.
The actor, perhaps best known for portraying the titular Wing Chun grandmaster in the "Ip Man" franchise, has always pushed himself. As a recent GQ profile recounted, coming up in the almost militaristic culture of Hong Kong cinema, Yen got used to pushing his limits when his Yuen clan of martial art...

It's a natural occurrence in art that trends, fads, subgenres, and the like must run their course. That doesn't necessarily mean they go away forever, just that their heyday is contained to a finite period of time.
Some trends are so of a moment, however, that even if their genre never goes away, the aesthetics particular to their peak can't come back completely. That's especially true of the 1980s action hero, a figure that only could have emerged during that decade of excess and one that had to say farewell once the more introspective 1990s rolled around.
As with most trends, it's debatable where to objectively define their start — and endpoints. A usually reliable bellwether is when a trend or genre is parodied or satirized. If the parody is external, it may signal the end (as 1980's "Airplane!" did regarding the disaster movie) or simply the genre's popularity (as with...

Early in 1987, producers Larry Gordon and Joel Silver were on the hunt for an action hero. They were working on a rollercoaster tale about terrorists hijacking a high-rise tower in Los Angeles and the script called for a muscle-bound bruiser.
For contractual reasons, Frank Sinatra was top of the list for Die Hard. Ol’ Blue Eyes had first refusal as he’d been the star of 1968’s The Detective, which like Die Hard was based on author Roderick Thorp’s thriller novels.
When the 70-year-old crooner confirmed his terrorist-fighting days were long behind him, producers went straight to the most obvious candidate: Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Terminator, Commando and Predator star said no, preferring to try his hand at comedy alongside Danny DeVito in Twins. The rejections kept coming: Richard Gere, Burt Reynolds, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Nick Nolte, Don Johnson and Mel Gibson all passed.
Way down the list was Bruce Willis.

War thriller “Unspoken,” based on multiple true stories from invaded Ukraine, will be presented at Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions in March.
Produced by Match & Spark (Poland), Toy Cinema and 2Brave Productions (Ukraine), the six-episode series – taking place during the very first days of full-scale war – is created by Filip Syczyński, who is co-writing with Zhanna Ozirna.
“This war has affected everyone in the world in a profound way. For me, it immediately posed the question: ‘What would I do to save my family? How far would I go?’,” wonders Syczyński.
His protagonist Evgeniy, on his way from Poland to the heart of darkness in Ukraine, has only one thing on his mind: Saving his wife and kids from the danger of Russian invasion. His time and tools are limited, however, and the only connection he has with his family is through his phone.

In March 2022, the Die Hard star’s family announced he would be “stepping away” from acting after he had been diagnosed with the condition, which was “impacting his cognitive abilities”.
Now nearly a year later, in a joint statement shared with the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, his family revealed Willis’s condition has progressed.

Actor Bruce Willis has been newly diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a serious indication of a progression of the aphasia his family announced in 2022.

When FX's "Justified" completed its six-season run in 2015, the United States' view of law enforcement was undergoing a radical shift due to the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri over police officer Darren Wilson's fatal shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown. There would be many more tragic incidents in the years ahead, but the most egregious might've been the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin. Fortunately, justice was served in this case (Chauvin is currently serving a 21-year prison bid), but Chauvin's nearly 10-minute choking of Floyd was so mind-bogglingly cruel that anything less than a life sentence felt inadequate.
As these abuses piled up, and the dynamic between cops and the people they're charged to protect and serve changed, people began pointing to the propensity of films and television to valorize law enforcement and the judicial system as upstanding dispensers of justice. And if you happen to...

It’s a wonder that Gerard Butler is able to purchase any insurance. After all, bad things seem to happen to him, or at least his screen persona, all the time. Whether he’s playing a Secret Service agent or an Everyman, Butler can’t seem to avoid getting in more tight spots than anyone since Bruce Willis’ John McClane. In his newest film, Plane, Butler plays an airline pilot, so you can rest assured that his flight is not going to go smoothly.
Fortunately for moviegoers, the veteran Scottish actor is an engaging, charismatic presence, and Plane is the sort of breathlessly paced suspenser that barely leaves a moment for audiences to stop suspending their disbelief.
The film dispenses with backstory, save for a brief introductory phone conversation between pilot Brodie Torrance (Butler) and his teenage daughter (Haleigh Hekking) as he’s rushing through airport security. It’s New Year’s Eve,...

On the last Empire Podcast of the year, we have something of a The Prestige reunion, which is nice.
