Laura Jane Grace and her Devouring Mothers bandmates Atom Willard and Marc Jacob Hudson perform together for the first time in over a year on the latest installment of Rolling Stone’s In My Room series.
The band filmed the performance at Grace’s home in Chicago, and opened with a rendition of “The Swimming Pool Song.” The song appears on Grace’s surprise solo album, Stay Alive, which she released last October.
The band then slipped into “Reality Bites,” a soulful tune from the Devouring Mothers’ 2018 debut, Bought to Rot.

Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers celebrate in the face of impending doom in their new “Apocalypse Now (& Later)” video. Security-style footage captures the band performing their folk-rock track, interspersed with various clips that contrast the dark (crumbing buildings, riots, fires) and light (people kissing and enjoying ice cream cones). It’s a fitting visual companion to a song that celebrates “the bliss of your kiss and the apocalypse.”
The track appears on the group’s recently issued debut LP, Bought to Rot, which also features “Reality Bites,” “I Hate Chicago” and “The Airplane Song.

“The Airplane Song” is a swift pop-rocker built on stomping drums and breathless guitar. Grace’s lyrics depict a tortured relationship as she sings about a person abandoned by a partner before a trip – “You’re not there drinking white wines complementary/ You’re not popping Valiums, you’re not watching the free movies.” As the song builds, the reason behind the...
