Exclusive: Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, a rising writer-producer coming to television from the world of theater, has signed with Artists First for management.
Chisholm most recently created, exec produced and served as co-showrunner for AMC’s comedic sci-fi series Demascus, produced by Gran Via. While his original pilot was picked up to series and shot its entire first season, it was one of a number of projects axed at the network amid a push for cost-cutting.
The show, which recently screened in part at SXSW, was set to follow a 33-year-old Black man of the same name on a mission of self-discovery amid the burgeoning field of digital psychiatry that might be the key to defining his truest self. It’s been described as a genre-fluid coming-of-age story with a reality-bending premise that explores the gulf between Black male perspectives, while also attempting to answer Demascus’ personal question: “Who am I?...

AMC has opted not to move forward with the series “Demascus,” Variety has confirmed.
The show was ordered to series at the cabler back in February 2022 and had completed production but will no longer air on AMC. The news comes after Variety exclusively reported that AMC was also not proceeding with Season 2 of the legal drama “61st Street” or with its planned series adaptation of the novel “Invitation to a Bonfire.”
The decisions were made as part of cost cutting measures announced by AMC in December 2022, in which the company stated it would take write-downs for up to 475 million. That figure included 400 million for “strategic programming assessments” and 75 million for “organizational restructuring costs,” per an SEC filing. Just prior to that announcement, AMC Networks CEO Christina Spade abruptly departed the company after less than three months in the role. James L. Dolan was then named interim executive chairman by the board of directors shortly thereafter.

AMC is moving forward with its series adaptation of Invitation to a Bonfire and sci-fi comedy-drama Demascus.
The cable network has handed series orders to both projects, which had writers rooms opened last August as part of the broadcaster’s “scripts-to-series” model.
Both series have been given six-episode orders and will launch next year on AMC and AMC+.
Based on the novel by Adrienne Celt, Invitation to a Bonfire is a psychological thriller set in the 1930s at an all-girls boarding school in New Jersey. Inspired by Vladimir and Vera Nabokov’s co-dependent marriage, the series follows Zoya, a young Russian immigrant and groundskeeper, who is drawn into a lethal love triangle with the school’s newest faculty member — an enigmatic novelist — and his bewitching wife.

AMC has opened writers’ rooms for three new series under their script-to-series model, including one based on the Anne Rice novel series “Lives of the Mayfair Witches.”
The potential series would focus on an intuitive young neurosurgeon who discovers that she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches. As she grapples with her newfound powers, she must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations.
Esta Spaulding and Michelle Ashford are both writers and executive producers on the series. Spaulding, who has an overall deal with AMC Studios, would serve as showrunner if the series was greenlit. This is the second series based on one of Rice’s books to officially go into development at AMC. The cabler previously greenlit a series based on “Interview With the Vampire,” with Sam Reid recently being cast in the lead role of Lestat.
