For the first season of the Apple TV+ series “Dickinson,” creator Alena Smith and her team were given a Peabody Award in part for the delightful way the comedy uses the life of Emily Dickinson (played by Hailee Steinfeld) to discuss modern issues like identity and equality. But despite the successful debut, Smith and the “Dickinson” team did not rest on their laurels.
“Season 2 was so absolutely different tonally and each character grew quite a bit from Season 1,” star Jane Krakowski, who plays Mrs. Dickinson on the show, told Gold Derby in an interview this year. “Initially, that was a bit like, ‘Can you explain why they made these changes?’ [Alena] had answers for every bit of it and guided our characters where they were going to start Season 2. I think Season 2 is better than Season 1 because of it.”

Everything was more evolved in Season 2 of “Dickinson,” from the conflicts and interpersonal drama between the characters to the musical landscape to the hair and makeup.
“In Season 1 it was a little bit more of an introduction to the world. There was a cleanliness, there was a cleanness, it was simple,” makeup department head Ande Yung tells Gold Derby in a new interview. “It was getting to the root of all our characters’ stories. In Season 2, there was a lot of richness — I feel like the sets, the wardrobe, the hair, the makeup, started to lend themselves to more of a rich palette.”
“We got to play, we got to add a little bit more,” she says.

“Dickinson” premiered in November 2019 as one of the original series that launched the Apple TV+ streaming service. The comedy tells a 19th century story but with a modern sensibility. SEEWhy Apple TV+ limited series ‘Defending Jacob’ could be a stronger Emmy contender than you think
The series re-imagines the life and times of poet Emily Dickinson (played by Hailee Steinfeld) as she fights against the restrictive gender roles of 19th century America. She is in love with her best friend Sue (Ella Hunt), but Sue is engaged to marry Emily’s brother Austin (Adrian Enscoe). And her parents don’t approve of her artistic pursuits. The show is deliberately anachronistic in its language, tone and music, trying to capture spirit of her rebellious poetry for a contemporary audience.

“Time is everything,” reveals hairstylist Suzy Mazzarese-Allison about her work on the AppleTV+ gothic dramedy “Dickinson,” which explores the early life of famous poet Emily Dickinson. “It takes time on a period show!” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mazzarese-Allison above.

“Dickinson” stars multi-hyphenate Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld as the literary icon in the coming-of-age comedy set in the 1850s with a contemporary edge. The series has many of the hallmarks of a lavish period piece – the intricate hair, the detailed costumes, the ornate sets – but it is told in a more modernized way, with modern music and sensibilities that speaks to a younger, more hip audience.

“I love doing period hair,” Mazzarese-Allison admits. “But this is a little different.

In order to portray real-life prison-escape accomplice Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell for Showtime’s limited series “Escape at Dannemora,” based on the 2015 events, actress Patricia Arquette had to completely transform her physical appearance. She gained a significant amount of weight — mostly by introducing “a lot of milkshakes” into her diet, the actress says — but she also had the aid and artistry of makeup department head Bernadette Mazur.
“It’s always a challenge when you have to do a likeness or a resemblance, because you want to make a character, not a caricature,” Mazur says.
The goal for director Ben Stiller, whom Mazur has worked with on films including “Zoolander 2” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” was to be as true to life as possible. This meant Mazur had to “strip down” Arquette’s natural radiance.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...
