When it comes to comics, superheroes are inexplicably linked to monsters. Horror comics existed before the superhero boom launched with Action Comics #1 (1938), and continued going strong after the caped crowd flopped following World War II. When Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee launched the Marvel Universe in the early 60s, they did so tentatively, keeping Spider-Man, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four close to the sci-fi and monster comics they made throughout the fifties.
As unlikely as the pairing may seem, superheroes and monsters make for a peanut butter and chocolate combination. Not only do monsters provide the overpowered villains required for superhero fights, as the current Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong demonstrates, but they also give characters like Spider-Man and Batman a chance to show off their heroism in the darkest of times.
So if you’re looking for some spooky superhero stories for your Halloween season, these 13 comics will do the trick.

Long before every conceivable comic book character received a film adaptation in the hopes of becoming the next blockbuster, there was Superman. While box office returns diminished over the course of four movies, the Man of Steel’s big-screen success heralded a crop of other superhero movies. Producers Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan swooped in to acquire the film rights to DC Comics’ other most well-known character, Batman (and they remain executive producers on every Batman movie), along with a more obscure title, Swamp Thing.
Not unlike a common trajectory in the modern comic book movie boom – in which filmmakers who have proven themselves in the genre space are given the keys to superhero properties – Wes Craven was enlisted to write and direct 1982’s Swamp Thing despite his unfamiliarity with the source material. While he would go on to make a name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street next,...

The new 'Swamp Thing' film will be a "Gothic horror movie" inspired by 'Frankenstein', according to director James Mangold. The 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' filmmaker is set to helm the upcoming movie which is part of the new DC Universe and he wants to explore what it means to be a man-turned-monster and Mary Shelley's 1818 novel and the subsequent film versions of 'Frankenstein' will be an influence.Speaking to Variety, Mangold spilled: "While I’m sure DC views ‘Swamp Thing’ as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster.“I am interested in making something that works from beginning to end — to curtain. Otherwise, I’m working on the world’s most expensive television show."I've been toying for years with the idea of making a kind of 'Frankenstein' movie.

James Mangold is quickly becoming one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood. With Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny whipping into theaters on June 30, 2023, and a film in the newly-announced Star Wars trilogy on his plate, it’s shocking to learn he’ll be tackling another project for DC. James Gunn confirmed Mangold would direct the studio’s Swamp Thing movie in February. Additionally, Mangold will also write the script.
Mangold confirmed he’ll write Swamp Thing earlier today at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Collider‘s Steve Weintraub spoke with Mangold, who confirmed he would pick up his pen for the Guardian of the Green.
“The truth is, I’m writing both right now,” Mangold said about pulling double-duty on Star Wars and Swamp Thing. “And who knows what’s going to happen and what’s gonna blossom first or second? So there’s your thing, I’m doing Swamp Thing,...

DC Studios will move forward on a new live-action feature film adaptation of DC Comics' super anti-hero "Swamp Thing", a humanoid-plant elemental creature, created by writer Len Wein and illustrator Bernie Wrightson, with producers promising to adhere to the character's comic book 'horror roots':
"...in a secret facility located in the Louisiana bayous, scientist 'Alec Holland' and his wife 'Linda' invent a bio-restorative formula that can solve any nations' food shortage problems.
"Two thugs working for 'Nathan Ellery', head of the criminal organization the 'Conclave', barge into Alec's lab, knocks him out and plants a bomb in the facility.
"Alec wakes up as the bomb explodes. In flames, he runs into the swamp. His body is drenched in the bio-restorative formula, affecting plant life in the swamp, imbuing it with Alec's consciousness and memories.

It turns out that a cryptic Twitter post can mean a lot more than just reminiscing about your favorite superhero. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that James Mangold is in negotiations to direct the recently-announced "Swamp Thing" film for DC Studios. While Mangold was not mentioned during the private press event revealing the new DC Universe movie and TV show slate, it appears he will be among the first of many directors to bring these projects to the screen.
"Swamp Thing" itself is expected to be the darkest movie of DC Studios' theatrical fare, with co-ceo Peter Safran teasing it as a look into the character's horrifying origins. The most common iteration of the character is biologist Alec Holland, who became the creature after a botched heist in his Louisiana laboratory. It is likely that Holland will be the film's focus, although other iterations of the character, such as Levi Kamei,...

James Mangold may be bringing one of DC’s creepiest heroes to life. The “Logan” and “Ford v. Ferrari” director is reportedly in early talks to tackle “Swamp Thing,” one of the upcoming films from DC Studio’s first chapter of movies under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s command, THR first reported Wednesday.
It’s unclear whether Mangold would both write and direct the film or his exact involvement. Mangold did however seem to confirm his interest on his Twitter, via a post with a panel from the character’s comic series, drawn by co-creator Bernie Wrightson. The post was also retweeted by Gunn.

Representatives from Warner Bros. Discovery. Sources told IndieWire that Mangold is a longtime “Swamp Thing” fan who approached the new regime at DC with his idea for the film, and that he will both direct and write should the project go forward.

Wow! That was fast! Reports indicate Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is in early talks to direct Swamp Thing for DC Studios. In Deadline‘s report, the outlet emphasizes nothing is set in stone, and the project hasn’t even reached the scripting stage yet. Mangold is a long-time fan of the character. Furthermore, DC is excited to speak with him about possibly directing a supernatural horror film for DC’s upcoming reboot of its cinematic universe.

The Snyderverse is dead. The Arrowverse is concluding. James Gunn and Peter Safran have seized the reins of the DC Universe, and on Monday they revealed their plan to bring order to a film-and-television brand that was haphazardly developed and, particularly on the film side, ineptly run. It is ambitious. It is still fairly sketchy on details. But the titles and characters they've elected to feature in the early going are, to this 49-year-old comic book fan's mind, indicative of grand, mythic thinking -- the creation of a new era of Gods and Monsters.
Given Gunn's bullishness on the epic, big-hearted quality of "The Flash" -- which he inherited from the previous regime and, it appears, could be used to spinoff/set-up his phase of TV and movie projects -- the outgoing steward of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise seems eager to enforce a benevolent worldview via his newly attained perch.

I spent a decade of my life happily working in a comic shop, so I got used to people asking for my recommendations. Most of the time, customers were happy to try out the books I suggested. However, my toughest sell was always one of the comics I was most passionate about: Swamp Thing.
Alan Moore's seminal run on the book — more on that later — was something I discovered very early on in my own reading journey due to the writer's undeniable impact on Neil Gaiman, who served as my introduction to comics via "The Sandman." Once I had finished every Gaiman book I could find, I got started on the work of Alan Moore, whom he had cited as a major influence.
Of course, I loved "Watchmen" and "V For Vendetta," both undisputed classics, but it was Moore's work on "Swamp Thing" that truly blew my teenage mind.

With Netflix’s The Sandman hitting the streaming service, fans can take a trip in the mystical and often surreal world of dreams. Comic fans have long heralded Neil Gaiman’s story arc as one of the greatest stories told not just in graphic novels but in all literature. His run of comics is often discussed in the same reverence as such titles as Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns.
Fans were wondering if it would ever get turned into a live-action project that would be treated with the respect and budget it deserved. Netflix was happy to step up to the plate and make it happen. The ten-episode series has captured fans’ imaginations, and they are eager to hear about a second season. The whole series is filled with all sorts of Sandman easter eggs for comics fans and references you may not be expecting.

Swamp Thing is being brought to a whole new audience this October. DC Universe tragically cancelled the series after just 10 episodes, but The CW has picked up the short-lived show to buff out its fall season, which is unusually low on DC content, thanks to the pandemic affecting production on its Arrowverse series.
Today, the network released a new trailer for the horror-themed comic book adaptation, which you can check out in the player above. If you already caught Swamp Thing when it landed on the DC streaming service last year, now’s your chance to watch it again. And, if you haven’t seen it yet, make sure not to miss it this time. As the trailer makes clear, the show is a lot darker and more mature than the usual superhero fare you find on The CW, but hopefully audiences will respond to it.

Chaos Ensues
At the start of Justice League Dark we see the world descending into chaos, as numerous violent incidents are committed all around the world. People live in fear that their fellow humans are in fact horrifying demonic creatures. The Justice League is called into action to bring order and peace back to civilisation. The Swamp Thing series finale on DC Universe reminds us how this show had its branches clipped far too soon.

Swamp Thing Episode 10
And so we have reached the end of the road, or garden path, for Swamp Thing. After 10 consistently good episodes, the series finale is dirty, but largely paydirt – even though the unceremonious early cancellation still rots.
Titled “Loose Ends” the episode attempts to precisely tie them all up. For the most part the mission succeeds, but it’s a rushed affair. Following the events of last week’s episode, which felt messy to this reviewer, we pick up with Abby, Swamp Thing, and Alec Holland’s skeletal remains.
Their dialogue about whether the creature is a copy of consciousness with “memories stolen from a dead man” or the presence of the man Abby once knew is compelling. It...

As you may have heard, we were all given a heads up to stick around after the credits for Swamp Thing‘s season finale. So if you didn’t do as instructed, be sure to fire up the concluding episode once again so that you be treated to an additional scene.
For those up to speed, you finally saw Jason Woodrue become a fully mutated Floronic Man. After being brought to life as a multilayered antagonist by a nuanced Kevin Durand, the Machiavellian scientist found himself emerging as the very antithesis of Swamp Thing himself.
Basically, Jason had been working diligently throughout the season to assure that his wife be pulled back from the abyss that is Alzheimer’s disease. While doing so, he couldn’t help noticing the regenerative properties possessed by the organs belonging to Alec Holland – or, at least, the plant that believed itself to be him.

Swamp Thing Episode 9
It is the penultimate episode of Swamp Thing and yet, rather than building to an epic series finale, “The Anatomy Lesson” stumbles with a story that feels patched together, and rushed. While a show shifting its signature aesthetic can be invigorating, the noirish vibe and overuse of deep focus cinematography jarringly disrupts the flow that has heretofore been established. Unfortunately the writing also stumbles.
Frankly, this reviewer wouldn’t be surprised to learn everyone involved in Swamp Thing had to go back and re-work much of this story to wrap things up. And the most disappointing aspect is Swamp Thing had been reliably strong up until its final moments.

Swamp Thing Episode 8
Avery Sunderland has a “Long Walk Home” in Swamp Thing episode 8, which serves as an interesting exploration of the character while also thrusting the action forward, and places Swampy in real danger. But is there enough time to wrap everything up by the series finale in two weeks?
The episode opens focused on Will Patton’s Avery in the swamp, and by all appearances, close to death. And that’s how the swamp wants it. Despite his tenaciousness in surviving, and having enough wits to bandage himself up, and carve directional markings into trees, the swamp chooses to taunt him. He has visions of Lucilia, hears haunting voices, and stumbles around, losing blood as well as his sanity. The particular...

Swamp Thing Episode 7
After officially introducing the concept of The Green, Swamp Thing takes another step forward in building its mythology, which happens to align closely with the comics, by introducing The Rot, aka The Black. Moreover, Alec Holland’s powers continue to grow. This is all a good thing since Marais is tearing itself apart.
I applaud this series for not holding back with Swamp Thing’s abilities. I can see a version of the show where things are painfully reserved, but not only is our hero using hallucinogenic spores to appear human, he’s growing fruit, summoning plants from the other side of the world, and even using the flora in Abby’s body to combat The Rot infection.

Swamp Thing Episode 5
Damn, this show deserves a better fate. I have wanted to avoid focusing on the negative too much, but we are at the halfway point of Swamp Thing’s first, and currently only, season, and things are picking up – but I am skeptical whether we’ll get a satisfying conclusion (even thought the finale was supposedly reworked to provide closure).
“Drive All Night,” (yet another Springsteen song title turned episode title) is a visually exciting ghost story with a creepy tone, and a plot that drives Abby’s arc forward. It also introduces both The Green and The Phantom Stranger to Swamp Thing – and we get a glimpse at Blue Devil!
There is a helluva lot going on in this fifth installment!

Whenever a beloved TV show gets cancelled, devoted fans pretty much feel like they’ve been dealt an emotional kick to the gut. No matter if said series has run for fifteen seasons or only thirteen episodes, it seems like such a wound never heals. If you don’t believe me, just ask anyone with an affinity for Firefly or Constantine.
Similarly, such outcry has been heard this week upon the plug being abruptly pulled from Swamp Thing. After only one episode had the chance to air, the Powers That Be have opted not to continue its adventures on the DC Universe streaming service. In case you were wondering, all ten episodes of season 1 will still be released, but that’ll be it.
That said, it should come as no surprise that a social media campaign to save the show has swiftly taken shape. Already, Twitter has been lit up by the “#SaveSwampThing.

Only one episode into its first season, Swamp Thing has been canceled by the streaming service DC Universe.
Multiple outlets, including Deadline and Entertainment Weekly, report that DC Universe has decided not to move forward with Swamp Thing, which premiered on the streaming service on Friday, May 31st.
Warner Bros. has not officially commented on the cancellation, but Deadline reports that the streaming service is being "reevaluated" following the "At&T acquisition of Time Warner."
Back in April, StarNews reported that the show's previously planned 13-episode first season had been cut down to 10.
At this point, it looks like a new episode of Swamp Thing will continue to be released every Friday until this season comes to an end. Time will tell if the series can find a home at a different streaming service or network, and we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed.

Well, looks like I’ll be canceling my DC Universe subscription. The only reason I signed up was for DC’s Swamp Thing series, and after one episode of the series aired, the show has been cancelled! The show will play out the entire 10 episode season, but what’s the point of watching and getting hooked on it if we know that the show has already ended and will not continue!?
The first episode was great, and it looked like it was shaping up to be a great series, but obviously they aren’t going to give the show a shot to succeed. That’s pretty sad. According to Deadline, the “new leadership of WarnerMedia was not particularly high on Swamp Thing whose order was reduced from 13 to 10 episodes in April.”

DC Universe canceled Swamp Thing, just one week into its run, according to Bloody Disgusting.
The cancellation comes weeks after it was announced that production would be shutting down after 10 of the 13 episodes were produced.
When reports of the slashed episode order surfaced in April, series star, Virginia Madsen took to Instagram to bash the decision in a since-deleted post.
Thanks to the power of the internet, nothing is ever really deleted.
"I'm beyond sad," the actress said in the post.

Mark Verheiden, one of Swamp Thing's two showrunners, reveals the tone of the show and his thoughts on the episode order cut.
Young streaming service DC Universe has a good thing going in its first couple of years. First, DC’s streaming arm somehow pulled off a gritty live-action Teen Titans reboot called Titans without anyone laughing them off WarnerMedia’s servers. In fact people kind of liked it!
Then they improbably brought Earth’s Strangest Heroes, Doom Patrol, to life in a convincingly weird 15-episode series of the same name. Now, DC Universe has reached into the drawer to pull another beloved character in the DC library: Swamp Thing.
Swamp Thing was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson for DC Comcis in 1971. In the ‘80s, Alan Moore’s hallowed run on Swamp Thing became a classic that brought many wayward fans back to comics. In fact,...

Swamp Thing turned to Crystal Reed to portray Cdc scientist, Swampy's buddy, and series lead Abby Arcane.
Between Teen Wolf and Gotham, actress Crystal Reed has established herself with characters who hold their own against monstrous men. And as Abby Arcane, the lead on the DC Universe’s new horror series Swamp Thing, Reed trades in werewolves, a penguin, and future Batman for the guardian of the Green.
Along with humanoid superhero Swamp Thing, and his human counterpart Alec Holland, Abby Arcane was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson for DC Comics. While her comic origins have her as a Romanian empath who becomes a nurse, the live-action Abby portrayed by Reed has a different backstory.
In this version, produced by James Wan, Abby is a Cdc doctor who returns to her Louisiana hometown after a long absence when a swamp-borne virus breaks out.

The latest series has been a highly-anticipated horror drama from the streamer, but when reports emerged that production was getting halted after production on 10 of the 13 episodes, concerns about the finished product started to emerge.
Those concerns are swiftly put to rest after screening the first two episodes on which the characters are put through the wringer.
There's a lot to love about a series that delivers genuinely shocking twists with a solid script, first-rate acting, and an atmospheric look that would leave many summer blockbusters looking terrible in comparison.

The cinematic look definitely elevates Swamp Thing above most other TV shows releasing this summer.
