Looking through Shim Hyung-rae’s small oeuvre, it would only make sense for the South Korean comedian-turned-filmmaker to create a movie like Dragon Wars: D-War. As early as 1993, Shim was playing with monsters; his directorial debut, Young-Goo and Dinosaur Zu-Zu, is derivative of Gorgo, Mothra and the like. Shim returned soon after with more monster mayhem in two other obscurities: Tyranno’s Claws and Dragon Tukka. His big break then came in 1999 with the high-budget remake of 1967’s Yongary, Monster from the Deep. As exciting as the opportunity was, Shim ultimately experienced unforeseen hardship after directing what was, at the time, the most expensive Korean-produced movie.
Yonggary, or Reptilian in the West, led to a challenging period for Shim. This ‘99 movie could have easily been the end of his career. Strangely, though, it was not the critical derision that caused Shim’s personal crisis. On the contrary, a shady distribution...

There were few movies arriving this year with as much controversy, publicity and curiosity as Paul Schrader's "The Canyons." The partially crowd-sourced, independently produced film marked a leading lady turn from the troubled Lindsay Lohan, who starred opposite porn star James Deen in his feature film debut. The result? Unsurprisingly it was both divisive and provocative and now you see the complete vision for the movie on home video. To recap, the movie was written by Bret Easton Ellis and chronicles the tale of trust-fund baby Christian (Deen), who is working on financing a horror film simply to keep his dad off his back. His girlfriend Tara (Lohan) is helping him with casting, and his producer, Gina (Amanda Brooks) is trying to get her struggling actor boyfriend Ryan (Nolan Funk) the lead role. Christian is also fond of inviting strangers into his home for threesomes or foursomes with the...

★☆☆☆☆ Numerous derelict cinemas litter the opening of Paul Schrader's now-infamous The Canyons (2013), screening out of competition at this year's Venice Film Festival; and more may follow this portent omen of things to come. Make no mistake - Schrader's latest isn't Basic Instinct 2 bad or even quote-a-long bad, as in the case of cult sensation The Room. Instead, it's just utterly incompetent in every possible way imaginable. Nolan Gerard Funk stars as Ryan, a young actor looking to make it big in Hollywood, who has just landed a role in a low-budget horror movie through his girlfriend, Gina (Amanda Brooks).
The film is being financed by Christian (porn-star James Deen), his girlfriend's rich boss. The Canyons begins with an excruciatingly awkward dinner, with Christian in a boastful mood and his girlfriend Tara (Lindsay Lohan) texting beside him. It turns out that Tara and Christian were once swingers. At this stage,...

Paul Schrader has come to Venice in two roles: that of jury president of the Horizons section and as the director of The Canyons, showing here out of competition. This is fitting for a man whose CV flits between an impressive list of writing credits (such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull) and directorial contributions (most notably American Gigolo). Alas for Venice audiences, The Canyons is far, far from impressive.

The Canyons
Directed by Paul Schrader

USA, 2013
Director Paul Schrader and writer Bret Easton Ellis’ The Canyons is a lurid black hole of nothingness. Nothing people. Nothing places. Nothing futures. The film opens with varying shots of broken down and decrepit movie theaters, suggesting a permanent modern lapse in our ability to get away from our phones and computers and enjoy stories in the cinema. We circle back to this idea when two female characters are talking over lunch about a third of the way through the film. “When was the last time you saw a movie that meant something to you?” a character asks. The conversation is quickly reduced to the basic idea that both women couldn’t fathom the idea of going to a movie and being away from their boyfriends that long.

It's true: Lindsay Lohan ain't what she used to be. But then, suggests The Canyons, neither is the movie business. With a lead actress now more famous for her rehab stints than her film roles, a lead actor (James Deen) who made his bones in pornography, and a stylish opening montage of decaying movie houses, The Canyons seems ready to make a damning meta-statement about the moral rot in Hollywood. But the film, from writer Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader, succeeds only in becoming the object of its own condemnation. It's just another limp, soft-core porn thriller lacking the courage of its convictions.

Los Angeles — Far from the renegade, boundary-pushing, sexually explicit sensation that its makers have been suggesting, "The Canyons" is a lame, one-dimensional and ultimately dreary look at peripheral Hollywood types not worth anyone's time either onscreen or in real life. Skanky side of L.A. expert Bret Easton Ellis employs nothing but melodramatic cliches in relating the manipulative and duplicitous doings of characters altogether interchangeable in their tediousness and lack of distinct personalities, while Paul Schrader had far more to work with in his last foray into scum-bucket Hollywood behavior in the excellent "Auto Focus."
And any expectations of explicit sex fostered by the presence of porn star James Deen and press reports of top-billed Lindsay Lohan getting down for real here are not even approached, much less fulfilled, as there's nothing beyond standard R-rated talk and nudity on hand. It's this sort of non-entertaining, pseudo-arty film that partially is...

If you’re expecting this to be a raging takedown of Paul Schrader‘s skeevy-seeming flick, you’re going to be disappointed. Coincidentally, that’s the emotion you’ll be left with if you see The Canyons and expect anything but a stream of beige Ambien with a side of stale popcorn. It’s a movie unworthy of snark or derision because despite trying so, so hard to be controversial, it merely manages to be dull. It is exactly the worst thing you can call a movie of its kind: average. Mostly bored with his life, trust fund baby Christian (James Deen) is making a movie to satisfy a father who disapproves of his laziness. He thinks so little of the endeavor that he’s put his assistant Gina (Amanda Brooks) in charge of it in a move that she misinterprets as respectful elevation, but what our main man is really interested in is finding people online...

Chicago – In January 2013, The New York Times wrote a scathing, fascinating piece about the tumultuous production of Paul Schrader’s “The Canyons.” The narrative was essentially that star Lindsay Lohan was so difficult on set that it derailed the directorial work of the writer of “Taxi Driver” in ways that would make a reality TV producer pull out his check book to buy the footage.
Clearly, Lohan was being set up for the blame. Now that the movie is being released in New York this Friday and available On Demand the same day, the truth can be told –- Lindsay Lohan is Not the problem with “The Canyons.” In fact, she’s arguably the only interesting thing about this train wreck, a film so vapid and worthless that it’s clear that, no matter what the troubled Ms. Lohan did on-set, there was no saving it.

It gives us a much better look at the film’s feel, over the previous parody trailers. And you can’t help but feel that the film will, at the very least, gain some form of cult status, regardless of its reception amongst critics.

After several teaser videos, IFC Films has finally released the first official version for director Paul Schrader’s new film The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan and pornstar James Deen. The new trailer for contemporary L.A. noir about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition starts off with Lohan’s monologue about movies, which obviously are not her thing anymore. We see later glimpses of sex, provocative images of barely-clothed men, and, of course, a cameo by Gus Van Sant who also stars in the film. The film also stars Nolan Gerard Funk and Amanda Brooks. The background music sounds like tracks used for the spots for Spring...

The Canyons has debuted a new trailer.
Lindsay Lohan and porn actor James Deen star in Paul Schrader's erotic thriller.
The trailer offers a brief glimpse into the world of affairs and revenge around which the movie circles.
Nolan Gerard Funk and Amanda Brooks will also star in the Bret Easton Ellis-written film, with Gus Van Sant making a cameo as a psychotherapist.
Schrader recently compared Lohan to Marilyn Monroe, saying that despite her "tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness [and] psychodrama", she was a "treat to work with".
The Canyons will debut at the Venice Film Festival later in the summer.
It was rejected by South By Southwest earlier in the year due to "quality issues".

There’s a new 1950s Hollywood trailer for The Canyons, the gritty story of a sensuous woman (Lindsay Lohan) torn between two men, one of whom is played by porn star James Deen.
The other love is played by Nolan Funk in the 50s melodrama which first teaser, released last month, was described as a ‘70s grindhouse-style’ trailer and 60s sex-comedy style trailer is reportedly expected next.
Canyons producer Braxton Pope recently told MTV News, revealing how he thinks tabloid queen Lohan is perfect for bad-girl Tara:
What’s kind of lost in a lot of the Lindsay discussions is the fact that Lindsay is a very talented actress. She’s very charismatic and she has a lot of acting skills. So her lifestyle and some of the things that she’s gone through have tended to kind of overwhelm the fact, but Lindsay has kind of real talent. So for this part,...

The new trailer for The Canyons, starring Lindsay Lohan has arrived. This may have worked in Robert Rodriguez' Grindhouse, but here, it's just nauseating to watch. I know what they're going for, but when you see this effect applied over modern-day environment, it just doesn't sit right. The thriller directed by Paul Schrader, known for The Walker, Affliction, Touch and classics like American Gigolo and Patty Hearst, also includes Nolan Gerard Funk, Gus Van Sant, James Deen, Amanda Brooks, Tenille Houston, Lauren Shacher and Jarod Einsohn. Brett Easton Ellis (The Informers) scripts with a story focusing on youth, glamor and sex in Los Angeles, circa 2012. This is a teaser, so hopefully the next trailer will be better than what we've seen.

Novelist Bret Easton Ellis gained the attention of filmgoers in 2000, with the feature film adaptation of his book American Psycho, whose success also brought lead actor Christian Bale into the public eye. Easton Ellis subsequently moved into screenplay writing, first putting pen to paper on further movie adaptations of his novels before deciding to do an original screenplay. Titled The Canyons, the movie is directed by Paul Schrader, known best for penning both Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and marks the feature film debut of porn star James Deen. Joining Deen onscreen are Lindsay Lohan, Gus Van Sant, and Amanda Brooks. The first trailer for this movie has now been released, and can be seen below.

Following up her overlooked drama Please Give, Nicole Holofcener is now at Fox Searchlight, where she’s wrangling together a cast for her still untitled next drama. The film is already starring Armando Iannucci collaborators Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini, but now Paranormal Activity 3 lead and star of Mira Nair‘s upcming Venice opener The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Christopher Smith has joined the lead. [Variety]
The project follows “a masseuse (Louis-Dreyfus) who falls in love with the husband (Gandolfini) of a new friend.” Smith is joining the cast as a younger man that Louis-Dreyfus meets before falling head over heals for said husband. Production starts within the next month, so hopefully we’ll see this pop up in the first half of next year.
In other casting news, Paul Schrader is deep into production on his Bret Easton Ellis-scripted sex drama The Canyons, but more actors are already being added to the ensemble.

Today I had morning sickness. Don't worry, I'm not pregnant (I hope…), but I stumbled upon something so repulsive I wanted to vom. Instead of actually puking, I've decided to voice my disgust in the form of word vomit. You may remember Amanda Brooks - after serving as an independent consultant, she spent a short while as the fashion director of Barneys New York, and recently resigned to enjoy a year-long an English sabbatical - but Harper's Bazaar still hasn't forgotten about her. The mag's staff published her "Wish List" this morning, and it took two whole slides before I got sick to my stomach. It's as if she (and Harpers' editors) expect me to look at that $6K Cartier bracelet and get jealous. Instead, I got mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!

It's safe to say I have a major girl crush on Natalie Portman and I'm pretty sure Hollywood does too. By now, you've surely heard that Amanda Brooks decided to leave her post as Barneys' fashion director in March (quite abruptly, if I may add) to go on sabbatical on some farm in Oxfordshire, England a la The Pioneer Woman. If you hadn't yet thought she was crazy for leaving one of fashion's most desirable careers in exchange for the cozy farm life and arranging cheese plates, take a quick peek into her enviable New York apartment with these photos from Garance Dore. I wonder if she's subletting for the summer?

Now that’s one pricey purse — in fact, it costs as much as a croc Birkin! Can you believe two pre-orders have already been placed for the handbag, regardless of the astronomical price tag?
The Olsen twins may appear to take a nonchalant approach to style, but apparently they have a penchant for pricey accessories — and they are designing them for the masses! While the handbags for their label, The Row, are classic and chic they come with a hefty price tag, with the smallest (and cheapest) bag retailing for a whopping $4,700.
The crocodile backpack Ashley is seen carrying is the most expensive in the collection, selling for $39,000. The bag is so expensive, it’s even selling for more than Victoria Beckham‘s priciest purse, a $29,000 large luggage handbag.

The Olsen twins have always been profoundly interested in fashion (though sometimes it is extremely hard to tell), so it only makes sense they would want the rest of us to be as deeply invested as well. So deeply invested, in fact, that we would consider taking a homeowner’s loan to afford their new black leather croc backpack, available through their line The Row. How much does it cost to own such a life-changing bag? Somewhere between $35,000 and $39,000, depending on where it’s for sale. Did we mention that it has a drawstring? Did we mention that it’s One Single Backpack?
New York’s Barney’s will be carrying the bags, and as their fashion director Amanda Brooks told Fashionista.com about the Olsens’ backpack, ‘I think if you were every going to spend $39,000 on a bag, that’s the bag you should buy because I think you...

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's The Row handbags were the center of attention at a party hosted at Barneys in NYC last night. Ashley and Mary-Kate had support from friends and various fashion editors, in addition to a cameo from their younger actress sister Lizzie. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley were decked out in outfits from the line, and carried two items from the new bag collection. They mingled with Barneys' Amanda Brooks and Simon Doonan at the store before moving on for a celebratory dinner at Crown. Mary-Kate and Ashley introduced nine bags made out lux fabrics like ostrich and alligator skin, and they're all priced between $2,000 and $15,000. Prices are a little lower at the Olsens' other new endeavor. Mary-Kate and Ashley's StyleMint t-shirts are selling for $29.99 each and already have a famous fan in Jennifer Garner. Connoisseurs of the decadent burlesque shows at the Box would probably agree that the New York City nightclub's playhouse productions are good, but I doubt that the audience has ever held back tears. Such was not the case last night at the downtown venue, however, as Somaly Mam, a survivor of human trafficking, stood behind a podium onstage telling a group of Manhattan social scene-sters why she had chosen Feed co-founder and Lauren Piece clothing designer Lauren Bush as the evening's guest of honor.
