The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

Movie-goers rejected Dracula not just once but twice this uear. Universal released two well-reviewed Dracula projects – the horror comedy Renfield and the more serious The Last Voyage of the Demeter – and both of them tanked at the box office. Renfield couldn’t even crack the $27 million mark at the global box office, and Demeter barely made it over the $20 million mark. Trying to recoup some of their losses, Universal gave The Last Voyage of the Demeter a VOD release just two and a half weeks after it reached theatres. Now it has been announced that the film will be receiving a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on October 17th – and it’s coming to home video with deleted scenes and an alternate opening.

Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is bringing Dracula back to theaters on August 11, 2023, and the film’s official trailer sinks its teeth into the internet this morning.
Based on Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, the horror movie will tell a unique Dracula story on the high seas, and the trailer gives us our first look at this film’s incarnation of the iconic blood-sucker. Unlike many adaptations that depict Dracula as a human being, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is leaning into Dracula being a full-on bat monster, and we love to see it.

Writer Bragi Schut’s script The Last Voyage of the Demeter has been floating around for many years now, with several different directors attached at various points. The director who eventually ended up board the ship is André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe,...

The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbor, it was a derelict. There was no trace of the crew. The initial script was written by Bragi Schut.

HBO is reportedly in the early stages of developing "Ashecliffe," a TV series prequel to the 2010 Martin Scorsese feature "Shutter Island".
The story would be set at the isolated mental hospital depicted in the Leonardo DiCaprio film with the events in the series taking place before those in the film and Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel on which the movie was based.
The plan is to explore the hospital's past and the misdeeds by its founders. If it moves forward, Scorsese would direct the pilot while both Tom Bernardo and Lehane would pen the script.
Scorsese, Lehane, Brad Fischer, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Killoran Davisson, Laeta Kalgridis, Rick Yorn, Chris Donnelly, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Mike Medavoy and Arnie Messer would serve as executive producers.

"Damien" has received a six-episode order for an early 2015 premiere. It is produced by Fox TV Studios, whose sibling Twentieth Century Fox produced the movie and where Mazzara is under an overall deal. The thriller series follows the adult life of Damien Thorn, the mysterious child from the 1976 feature who has grown up, seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Exclusive: As the TV biz prepares to celebrate another ground breaking year tonight, underwritten in no small effort by feature talent, the remarkable thing to consider is how much more of this is coming. Here’s one that has great potential: HBO and Paramount Television are making deals to turn the 2010 hit film Shutter Island into a TV series. Tentatively titled Ashecliffe, the plan is for the pilot to be directed by Martin Scorsese from a script by Dennis Lehane, who wrote the bestselling thriller novel that Scorsese and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis turned into the hit film that Leonardo DiCaprio starred in.
Ashecliffe is the name of the isolated mental hospital where the movie took place, and the series begins before the events of the film. The focus is the past of hospital, and the secrets and misdeeds perpetrated by its founders who erected the hospital in the early 20th...

Craig Zahler's The Brigands of Rattleborge western may land Oldboy director Chan-wook Park The film is apparently a very violent thriller which tells of a sheriff and a doctor who aim to enact their revenge upon a group of bandits who make use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob occupants of a small town. The script topped the Black List of 2006, but has struggled to get off the ground due to the violent nature of the material. Red Granite Pictures is fully financing and co-producing with Mythology Entertainment. Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland of Red Granite produce alongside Bradley Fischer of Mythology. Viggo Mortensen has been offered the lead role of Henry Clemens in Neil Marshall's "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" at Millennium Films says Bloody Disgusting.
Based on a chapter in Bram Stoker's classic novel "Dracula", the story describes the disturbing voyage taken by the vampire count to England on a merchant vessel shipping cargo from Transylvania to London.
Stoker tells the story via the captain's log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear as Dracula feeds on them to sustain himself.
Lowell Cauffiel penned the latest draft of the script which is reminiscent of the original "Alien" in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger. Ben Kingsley remains attached to play the ship's Captain.
Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Bradley Fischer will produce.

Seeing as his once-gestating Hellfest has been silent for nearly four months, THR informs us that Neil Marshall (The Descent, Centurion) is attached to go gothic with The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The Stoker enthusiasts among us will perk their ears at the lattermost word of that title, and they’d be well-advised to — the Bragi Schut-penned screenplay adapts a chapter from Dracula and turns it into an Alien-like horror story of survival. Or, the repeatedly failed attempt to.
Stoker‘s original text paints the Demeter as a ship transporting Dracula’s body from Transylvania to London, one which, by the time it crashes onto an English shore, only has a single body aboard. The novel’s epistolary structure gives us a recount of what occurred — probably to strong effect, if the book’s reputation means anything — but this project will fill in the blanks with gory detail.
