Chicago – Chicago is acknowledged as one of the great comedy cities in the world mostly for The Second City influence. However like other cities, there is an ebb and flow regarding stand-up comedy, and during the late 1980s/early 1990s there was a stand-up boom in the Windy City, chronicled in the film “Out of the Loop.” Producer Scott Perlman provides the context behind the documentary, now available for free on Plex and Tubi, and for download on various platforms.
“Out of the Loop” is familiar documentary form, but there are several twists in the story that occur, exposing the uniqueness of Chicago … one of the main ones being the great divide between Black and White comics, also divided geographically between South and North sides. The truth, in this case, set several comics free and emphasized the lost legend of the late Bernie Mac. Featuring well know and lesser known...

Fans of W. Kamau Bell are reeling at the news today that the show was cancelled. The late night chatter was a quick-paced, funny and thought provoking salon where Bell moderated and interviewed guests, with writers like Dwayne Kennedy who also subbed as on-the-scene reporters. At the past summer press tour for the television critics' association, Bell was asked if the new five day a week schedule on a new network gave him any pause. "Well, it’s funny. [FX PR] John Solberg just said something about, he isn’t afraid of taking on anything. I’m, like, 'Well, I’m filled with fear,' just in general, not about the show. And so it’s but I think that fear is the engine...

To help drum up awareness of the new channel and schedule, Bell and his fellow writers/comics are going on a 10-city tour in July performing live shows around the country starting in Boston, this Thursday July 11. It even includes a stop at The House of Blues in San Diego next week during Comic-Con.

Not everyone thought that photo of a Florida pizza owner giving President Obama a bear hug was "cute" Kodak moment. Comedian Dwayne Kennedy thought it was a major Fail.
On this week's "Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell," Bell introduced Kennedy as an opponent to former Republicans picking up the leader of the free world, whether they do it out of love or not. Kennedy was thinking what a lot of us were when we first saw the picture: Where on Earth was the Secret Service?
Aside from the obviously baffling nature of the photo, Kennedy takes issue with it for other reasons, claiming that there are a few racial implications of the now-infamous bear hug that we may have missed at first. Watch his segment above and tell us if you agree in the comments.

Tonight is the premiere for FX’s new semi-live comedy show, Totally Biased with W.Kamau Bell, starring San Francisco comedian W. Kamau Bell and produced by Chris Rock. It’s the latest entry by FX to expand its comedy offerings and it’s second in trying to do a multi-media-comedy-act-in-front-of-a-live-audience show at 11pm Et/Pt. The first being Brand X with Russel Brand, which is an awkward show to describe without getting frustrated. Totally Biased however, is more refined, straight forward act that’s heavy on the socio-politcal hot topics and packaged in a way that’s much more easily absorbed, because we want to laugh but we also want to retain the messages too. Is it worth staying up for after Louie? In a word, yes.
In each episode, Bell stands before a crowd in an intimate theater-like environment of what seems like and audience of 200-300, comprised mostly of young adults,...

Comedian Sarah Silverman went on "The Rachel Maddow Show" Friday to discuss "Live from N*****head", a comedy show and fundraiser she's putting on this Tuesday to benefit the NAACP.
The event's title is inspired by the sign for Republican candidate Rick Perry's controversially-named hunting camp, which included a charged racial epithet before being painted over (though exactly when is still in question). The story was all over the headlines earlier this month before quickly fading out of the conversation thanks to other gaffes and odd campaign moves.
Maddow seemed to think that the short-lived media coverage had a lot to do with how uncomfortable dancing around the N-word makes most reporters, but Silverman said she's determined to keep the story at the forefront of people's minds in light of the upcoming elections.
"I think any time racism shows itself in a tangible way, and it's not just a gas in the air,...

Comedian and TV actress Sarah Silverman is set to thump Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry with a provocatively titled live comedy show in his home state.
Silverman is marshaling fellow comics for a fund-raiser in Texas titled, “Live From N*****head: Stripping The Paint Off Of Good Ol’ Fashioned Racism.”
The title refers to the controversy over Perry’s West Texas hunting campground where the candidate has entertained friends and supporters. The campground’s former name, “Niggerhead,” was painted on a rock at the entrance for many years.
“This is a never-forget moment,” Silverman said. “The show’s provocative name...

Comedian Jasper Redd is an intriguing mass of contradictions. If he had his druthers, his entire routine would be all about race, but he counts Jerry Seinfeld's trivial observations as a major influence. Even though he's often dressed up in Western attire to celebrate his Tennessee heritage, he's as savvy about the vagaries of Hollywood as any longtime Los Angeleno. And even though he's being doing comedy for almost a decade professionally, he admits that it's only recently that he's felt confident about being a stand-up.
We were lucky enough to see Redd for the first time a few years ago when he performed in Los Angeles to commemorate the release of "Frankenhood," a straight-to-dvd movie that was his first - and as of today, last - acting job. Since then, he's been traveling across the country to various venues, including college campuses, and bringing with him a comedic...
