After releasing The Colorado Kid and Joyland via the Hard Case Crime imprint, Stephen King made his grand debut into the world of hard-boiled crime fiction with Mr. Mercedes. The first in a trilogy, the 2014 novel introduced readers to Bill Hodges, a crusty, retired detective who finds his golden years interrupted by the taunts of a psychopathic killer he failed to apprehend.
A divisive book among the King faithful, Mr. Mercedes is nonetheless an important one, as it introduces Holly Gibney, a recluse-turned-investigator King would go on to feature in four subsequent novels (and one novella), including last year’s Holly.
Join The Losers’ Club’s Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Ashley Casseday, and Rachel Reeves as they detail the book’s origins, how it differs from the author’s previous forays into crime, and the ways in which it reflects evolving societal fears about domestic terrorism. They also discuss the...

Stephen King loves Holly Gibney. First introduced in King's crime novel "Mr. Mercedes," book one of the Bill Hodges trilogy, she's returned in his work time and time again. She came back in the two other books in the trilogy: "Finders Keepers" and "End of Watch." Then she appeared in the novel "The Outsider" and the short story "If It Bleeds." Finally, she got a book of her own with "Holly," the newest novel King published (it came out in 2023; the ever-prolific King probably wrote four more novels in the time it will take me to finish this sentence).
Holly has been brought to the small screen twice already. She appeared in the "Mr. Mercedes" TV series, where she was played by Justine Lupe. Then she popped up again in the TV adaptation of "The Outsider," where Cynthia Erivo played the character. Now, Holly is headed to the small screen again,...

That writer from Maine is back at it again. Stephen King one of the most prolific authors in America, is back with a new novel. The novel is called “Holly”. The novel follows Holly Gibney. The character made her first appearance in Mr. Mercedes. She also appeared in Finders Keepers and End of Watch and later was a major supporting character in The Outsider.
“I could never let Holly Gibney go. She was supposed to be a walk-on character in Mr. Mercedes and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart. Holly is all her.” —Stephen King.
According to his publisher, this is what Holly is all about: Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but alive and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged,...

The next book we’ll be seeing from Stephen King is Holly, which is set to reach store shelves on September 5th (you can pre-order a copy Here) and centers on the Holly Gibney character that King has previously written about in the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, The Outsider, and the If It Bleeds story contained in the short story collection of the same name. Now, during an interview with the Talking Scared podcast, King has revealed three more projects that he’s working on or thinking about working on: another short story collection, another Holly Gibney story, and possibly a third book in the Talisman series he started with the late Peter Straub.
King told Talking Scared (with thanks to The Guardian for the transcription) that the short story collection is called You Like It Darker and is expected to be published sometime in 2024. The book has a page count...

Richard Price wasn't exactly the most obvious choice to adapt Stephen King's 2018 book "The Outsider" into a TV mini-series. Far from a novice in this area, Price had already adapted novels like "The Color of Money" and even his own books "Clockers" and "Freedomland" into films. But his speciality had always been crime thrillers and mysteries that pit their leads against firmly human horrors, rather than fantastical foes like the creature at the heart of King's story.
In Price's hands, "The Outsider" is less "It" and more "True Detective," despite the ancient child-killing entity at the heart of its plot. It's also a ghost story, if not in the typical sense. In a change from King's original novel, the show's protagonist, detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), is haunted by the death of his young son from cancer some years prior to the series' events. As Price saw it, this...

Here’s a fun little look behind the curtain. Back when HBO announced the release date of Richard Price’s atmospheric Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider, Den of Geek ran the news as an article, as one does.
Shortly after the article went live, representatives from HBO reached out to clarify that they weren’t categorizing the project as a “miniseries” as many outlets (and none other than Wikipedia itself) had reported but rather a traditional series. It seemed clear then that HBO had at least the possibility of multiple seasons in mind when it greenlit the show. After all, why wouldn’t they? Stephen King adaptations always tend to do well and The Outsider boasted a solid cast and an intriguing concept true crime-meets- the-supernatural concept
The Outsider would then go on to pull off 10 good episodes, receive modest-to-excellent critical acclaim, kill it in the ratings, and drive online...

There will be no second season of The Outsider at HBO.
The premium cabler has canceled the series, which is based on Stephen King's novel.
Despite exhausting the source material during The Outsider Season 1, work had already begun on scripts for a second season, but HBO is not moving forward with it.
Deadline confirmed that HBO is not pursuing a second season, but there is a glimmer of hope.
The Outsider production company MRC is shopping the series to other outlets, meaning that it could pop up somewhere else down the line.
“We enjoyed our collaboration with [executive producers] Richard [Price], Jason [Bateman], Andrew [Bernstein] and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.

Exclusive: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market.
The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.

After months of silence, we now have confirmation about the future of HBO's The Outsider.
Stephen King has confirmed that The Outsider Season 2 is in the works and that he has already read some of the scripts.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer of the novel the series is based on has said that the scripts are "really great" and that they have a "real spooky paranormal element."
King was speaking to the outlet about the character of Holly Gibney, who was played by Cynthia Erivo on The Outsider but was played by Justine Lupe on Mr. Mercedes.
King noted when asked who played the role better than Lupe had an unfair advantage because she got to play the role for three seasons.
"Cynthia may get that time, because there's going to be a second season of The Outsider as soon as they can get the production going.

Fans of HBO’s crime-horror series “The Outsider” have been waiting for months for the network to announce a Season 2 renewal, which is why Stephen King has great news: scripts for a second season of “The Outsider” have already been written. From the way King talks in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, it sounds as if HBO is definitely moving forward with “The Outsider” Season 2. The series is developed by Richard Price based on King’s 2018 novel of the same name.
Both HBO’s “The Outsider” and Audience network’s King adaptation “Mr. Mercedes” feature the character of Holly Gibney, played by Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo in the former and Justine Lupe in the latter. When asked which actress played the better Holly, King noted Lupe had the unfair advantage because “Mr. Mercedes” ran for three seasons. Photo: 'The Outsider'/HBO Richard Price’s new horror series – 'The Outsider' – brings a new perspective to adapted Stephen King content. The new horror series based on the book of the same name, premiered on HBO this January and has been a hot topic ever since. A series surrounding a strange murder, 'The Outsider' follows the investigation unit in a friendly Georgia town, as they run into the supernatural, unprecedented evidence, and outrageous theories. What once seemed like a straightforward case, quickly becomes a tangled web. So what makes this different from any other Stephen King adaptation? This series is driven by a group of characters so different, yet so similar. Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) is the little league coach everyone knows and adores. Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) is a trustworthy cop who is finding his way after the death of his son. And Holly Gibney...

Oscar nominee and The Outsider star Cynthia Erivo is expanding her relationship with MRC Television and Civic Center Media, the studio’s joint venture with UTA, with a first-look deal. Under the pact, Erivo will develop and produce television projects through her newly formed production company, Edith’s Daughter. Additionally Erivo has named former Bron Studios executive Solome Williams as Vice President of Edith’s Daughter, a company whose mission is to “focus on projects that express the beauty in the stories and people who are often overlooked and underrepresented.”
“MRC was an incredible partner on The Outsider and I’m unbelievably excited to begin this new creative journey in television with them,” said Erivo. “I could not think of a better partner than my new Vice President Solome Williams, who is brilliant and has thoroughly impressed me with her experience and drive. I’m looking forward to building with her.

The latest book from Stephen King, a collection of four novellas titled If It Bleeds, has already yielded three separate movie deals since its publication in May.
According to Deadline, three of the tales in the book — “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone,” “Rat” and “The Life of Chuck” — have been snapped up by three different companies. The title story, meanwhile, seems likely to get an adaptation too, since it stars a character that has already appeared in two different King adaptations.
King has an unusual way of doing business in that he licenses the options to his stories for the sum of one dollar (with more to come later), although he gets certain creative control rights as part of the bargain and the productions must go in front of the cameras within specified time frames. That latter aspect may be a challenge with Covid-19 still hampering a lot of Hollywood productions.

Stephen King’s latest bestselling four novella collection If It Bleeds has quickly garnered three option deals, with a fourth in the offing because it involves a preexisting character who just starred in an HBO series adaptation. For those who know that King extends options for $1, that’s an extra $4 in the prolific author’s pocket, with a lot more coming when they get made.
Netflix, Blumhouse and Ryan Murphy have teamed to option the book’s first tale, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, which John Lee Hancock will adapt and direct. Jason Blum, Murphy and Carla Hacken will produce the feature.
Rat has been optioned to Ben Stiller, who intends to product, direct and star in the feature.
And Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa has optioned The Life Of Chuck. At this point, Aronofsky is just aboard as producer.

Stephen King novel adaptations are not a new concept, but mastering how to convert the famous author’s work into a compelling psychological thriller was a task that HBO’s miniseries “The Outsider” was able to accomplish, leaving fans to speculate if there might be a sequel to the drama series.

Cynthia Erivo has always been a talent to keep an eye on, but it was her role as Celie Harris in the Broadway production of The Color Purple which lit up the stage and caused everyone’s jaws to drop in awe — so much that she won a Tony Award for it. From there, it seemed like Erivo took Hollywood by storm.
Erivo went from Broadway to roles in high profile films of various genres including Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale, Steve McQueen’s Widows and starred as the titular historic figure Harriet Tubman in the Kasi Lemmons-directed Harriet which earned an Oscar nomination. She is also set to play the legendary Aretha Franklin in the forthcoming installment of Nat Geo’s Genius anthology.

When the coronavirus pandemic first arrived, many of us found ourselves abruptly pulled away from our vibrant social lives, and locked up indoors with only our thoughts to keep us company. For Stephen King, however, such a predicament meant nothing new. That’s not to say he particularly likes being alone with himself, though. On the contrary, in a recent interview with The Late Show, the acclaimed horror writer shared which of his countless literary creations he would least prefer to board with during these trying times.

Writers often tease small parts of their forthcoming books, but it’s not everyday they play narrator, too. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic – which, in case you didn’t know, has cancelled many events, including public readings – King’s video comes as a pleasant surprise to his fans, many of whom have doubtlessly already pre-ordered If It Bleeds online, and are now eagerly awaiting their copy in the mail.

With the coronavirus pandemic drawing associations with his epic story of a flu-like virus in The Stand, Stephen King has been regularly sharing his takes on the current situation. Over the last month, King has both moved to reassure people that Covid-19 is nowhere near as deadly as The Stand‘s Captain Trips, as well as sharing some humorous takes on how the lockdown would affect his characters. While the author’s latest book, If It Bleeds, is getting an early publication this month, King is already working on his next effort. However, it seems that the impact of the coronavirus has changed his original plans for the novel.
More specifically, he’d intended his latest book to take place in 2020, but is now revising the plot due to the overwhelming effect of Covid-19 on daily life. Speaking to NPR, King had this to say about the difficulty of writing...

The most recent novel of Stephen King, horror/thriller The Institute, was only published in September, but the ridiculously prolific author already has another title on the way in the form of If It Bleeds, which has had its release date pushed forward a week to April 28th.
If It Bleeds is not a full novel, but instead a collection of four novellas, the same format as the likes of Full Dark, No Stars, Four Past Midnight and the highly popular Different Seasons. The stories are titled Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Life of Chuck, Rat, and If It Bleeds. Not much information has been provided about what we can expect from their actual content, although an excerpt released last year from presumably the titular tale reveals it to feature detectives Holly Gibney and Ralph Anderson from The Outsider, the novel on which the miniseries of the same name was based,...

The following contains spoilers for The Outsider episode 10.
Stephen King adaptation The Outsider just wrapped up its moody, and at times terrifying 10-episodes on HBO. That means we can now get down to the important question…will there be The Outsider season 2 on the horizon?
This seems to be an increasingly common conundrum over at HBO. As of late, the pay cable network is fond of introducing what appear to be close-ended miniseries that nevertheless leave the door open for future seasons. We saw it with Watchmen’s conclusion and now the question is raised once again with The Outsider. Or at least that’s how things look at first glance. In reality, there may be much more hope for The Outsider season 2 than there ever was for Watchmen season 2.
For starters, despite many assumptions to the contrary, The Outsider was never billed as a miniseries or limited series by HBO.

This The Outsider feature contains spoilers for the finale.
In the end, The Outsider’s slow burn appears to have been worth it. HBO’s Stephen King adaptation has always been a good, well-crafted show. But few would argue that its nine episodes leading up to this finale have been chock full of adrenaline-pounding moments
That all changes in this final hour. “Must/Can’t” is the thrilling and kinetic finale that a story so patient and beautifully-made deserves. Ralph Anderson, Holly Gibney, and all their allies finally come face-to-face with the entity known as El Coco. Now let’s break down exactly what happened.
Who Died in The Outsider Finale?
A better question might be “who didn’t die in The Outsider finale?” Fulfilling the promise of last week’s explosive ending, this finale opens with an absolute massacre at the hands of the El Coco-controlled Jack Hoskins (Marc Menchaca...

Can a gritty crime drama really ask viewers to believe in the boogeyman? “The Outsider” is about to find out.
“I hate stories in which on page seven the zombies are there, and by page eight everyone is going, ‘Oh, [sure], zombies.'” showrunner and executive producer Richard Price said in an interview with IndieWire. “It’s like, wait a minute — I don’t care if they’re a cop or a mailman, how do you get a normal person not only to believe in some crazy shit that’s not human — but act on it?”
The question lingers over Price’s blend of police procedural and supernatural thriller, as both the characters and audience have to be satisfied with answers based on the “crazy shit” Price is talking about. After five episodes setting up a mystery, the pivotal sixth entry in HBO’s Stephen King adaptation reveals how its confounding central mystery will be solved,...

The series is based on the book The Outsider by Stephen King. The scripts are written by Richard Price, who wrote HBO's The Night Of and The Deuce, as well as novels like The Wanderers, Clockers, and Ladies Man. King is the long-reigning master of the macabre, while Price keeps things real and captures the mundane details which make the distant mystery personal. HBO’s The Outsider is one tough nut to crack, something Holly Gibney quickly learns on this week’s episode. While she scores some much-needed time with key sources of the spooky saga, she treads water trying to connect the dots. Is the legendary El Coco the missing link? Let’s take it from the top.
We’re treated to a dreamy scene of the now-dead inmate courting a nice woman over a lovely breakfast. Cut to present, Holly tells Anderson the man’s name was Heath Hofsteader, and he worked at the senior center where Terry Maitland’s father lives.

Detective Anderson may be on mandatory leave, but that doesn’t mean his wheels have stopped churning. The third episode of HBO’s The Outsider raises more questions, while adding one genius, yet highly unorthodox Pi to the mix — hello, Holly Gibney!
At the top, local police swarm the barn, bagging-and-tagging evidence they don’t know what to do with. Cherokee City gets wind and sends Officer Crankypants Jack to check it out, but as usual, he’s super salty. He gets liquored up before driving to the barn to do his job, which honestly, is pretty on brand for him.

What's life without concrete answers to the most burning questions?
That's what Ralph debated on The Outsider Season 1 Episode 3 as the evidence against Terry continued to stack up.
But there was no logical way of placing Terry at the crime scene while he was simultaneously out of town at a conference.
The mystery continued to gather steam on "Dark Uncle," as another Stephen King favorite joined in the fun.
Cynthia Erivo was electric in her debut as Holly Gibney. The character is multi-layered, rife with quirks, and may well have emerged as the best character on the series.
How did she do that after one episode, you ask? Her personality is complicated. She is an analytical young woman who understands the mission at hand.
She and Ralph are polar opposites. For that reason alone, it will be intriguing to watch them unravel this mystery without anyone else getting killed, and...

The Outsider on HBO introduced a new character in the third episode of Sunday night, and for fans who have not read the source novel by Stephen King, Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo) is the second lead character after Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn). Holly is the partner of Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) in both the TV show and the novel trilogy. However, fans will also notice a major change in Holly Gibney. The Outsider Episode 3
From her introduction, the dedicated detective Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo) is something to behold. She's strange, and compulsively watchable, and in possession of some compelling traits. Somewhere between superstitious, savant, genius, and the autism spectrum, Holly falls somewhere roughly between Sherlock Holmes and Monk in her list of eccentricities. But there's something about the character that is more than just a collection of quirks.
That's due in no small part to the incredible performance by Cynthia Erivo. For those unfamiliar, Erivo picked up three-fourths of the vaunted Egot thanks to a much-lauded turn in the most recent Broadway revival of The Color Purple, and she has two chances to capture the Oscar portion of the award at...

“The Outsider” is as much a true crime story as it is the kind of chilling horror tale that Stephen King has mastered. The HBO series, adapted from the author’s 2018 novel, might not fully lean into the horror that defined recent King adaptions, such as “It,” — but that was part of the appeal for series star and executive producer Jason Bateman, who also directed its first two episodes.
“I’m not a huge horror fan or into scare jumps, gore, or slashers (but) I really love dread, thrillers, tension and all that stuff,” Bateman said during a “The Outsider” panel at the Television Critics Association 2020 Winter Press Tour. “I was really excited that this story lived in more of a Stephen King ‘The Shining’ world, as opposed to some of his other great stories that are more in the frightening, scare, shock world.”

HBO’s “The Outsider” in large part centers on Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), a Stephen King character that also has a major role in AT&T Audience Network’s “Mr. Mercedes” (where Justine Lupe portrays Gibney).
The different tones of the two shows could cause a bit of confusion for fans of the King novels who are coming to find their favorite character leap out of the paperbacks and onto the small screen. Not “The Outsider” showrunner Richard Price’s problem, he basically said Wednesday at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, The Outsider centers on a community overcome with grief when one of their children is found brutally murdered.
It's not King's first flirtation with crime, and like most of his work, there is an otherworldly bent to what's happening.
Although I didn't finish the novel, from what I've seen so far, it's a faithful adaptation. And with skillful filming and directing and a talented cast, it's a lot easier to pick up on the expected sinister undertones.
Ben Mendelsohn plays detective Ralph Anderson, the man in charge of picking up the pieces for his community in light of the slaying of an 11-year-old boy whose body is found in the woods near their Georgia town.
It seems like a cut and dry case when witnesses, video footage, and forensic evidence place local teacher and beloved baseball coach, Terry Maitland, at the scene.

In one way, adapting Stephen King’s 2018 novel “The Outsider” into a 10-episode series for HBO was old hat for writer and producer Richard Price. He has adapted his own novels for screen in the past, as well as projects including “The Color of Money” and “The Night Of.” But in another, taking on this project allowed the veteran industry professional a chance to achieve a childhood dream.
“It’s this combination of a police procedural that takes this twist into the supernatural without ever quite leaving the police procedural world. The easiest thing for me to write is the police world and ever since I was a kid, I’d always wanted to write a ghost story,” he tells Variety.

At its core, “The Outsider” is a story about belief. Stephen King’s 2018 novel focuses on a small town detective whose job requires him to find concrete answers to real-world mysteries, and then hands him an impossible case he can’t explain — not without considering supernatural possibilities.
King asks the same from his readers, to believe in the unbelievable, except the novel falls spectacularly short is in justifying its own request. Perhaps the Master of Horror has been writing about ghosts and demons for so long that he no longer feels the need to convince anyone that believing in the boogeyman is a reasonable, rational choice, but the book tries to combine two, diametrically opposed genres — speculative fiction and true crime — without respecting the foundation of both.

Midway through HBO’s new mystery/horror hybrid The Outsider, a character buys a half-dozen lamps at a hardware store, takes them out to the woods, and dumps them in a field. The series doesn’t make room for humor, but this is a very funny moment, albeit an unintentional one. Of Stephen King’s recent books, The Outsider is notable for its blending of traditional Kingian horror with the mystery elements of his love of detective fiction. The novel was only released in 2018, but is already heading to HBO in January as an adaptation starring Ben Mendelsohn and Jason Bateman. In fact, the network have now released the first full trailer for the 10-episode series, which you can catch above, providing an intriguing look at a show that will presumably exploit pay cable’s content freedoms to bring The Outsider‘s gruesome story to life.

HBO has unveiled the first trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider,” the latest Stephen King horror novel to be adapted for the small screen.
The 10-episode series, which is set to hit HBO January 12, will follow police detective Ralph Anderson as he investigates the grisly murder of an 11-year-old.
