Filmmaker and musician Jeymes Samuel has linked up with Lil Wayne, Buju Banton, and Shabba Ranks for “Hallelujah Heaven,” the first offering from the soundtrack for Samuel’s upcoming movie, The Book of Clarence.
Samuel served as director, writer, producer, and composer on The Book of Clarence, and in a statement, he noted “the story and music” for the film was “always there percolating in my mind” as he worked on other projects (like his 2021 feature The Harder They Fall).

Fans of Bas, one of the first rappers signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, know that the Paris-born, Queens-bred rapper calls several places home. Prominent among these is Sudan, where he says his friends and family are amongst the displaced and dead in a brutal war between the East African nation’s military and a paramilitary group that has been raging since April. His new single “Khartoum” and its music video are a personal account of the devastation. The United Nations reports that 5.6 million Sudanese have been expelled from their homes,...

Though Mr Eazi has released five bodies of work and several smash Afrobeats singles over the past 10 years, he’s crowning The Evil Genius, out Oct. 27, his debut album. “I don’t like to use the word album loosely,” he says, and he’s pulled out all the stops for this one, including commissioning 16 pieces of physical, visual art, one for each of the tracks. In late 2020 Accra, Ghana, where Eazi, a Nigerian, has made a home since he was 15, he started to become enthralled with the fine arts after visiting a friend’s museum.

Davido — an 11-year Afrobeats veteran at the forefront of the genre’s early crossover — has announced the title and release date for his fourth studio album, one he told Rolling Stone was nearly complete last June. Then, in the fall, tragedy struck: his three year old son, Ifeanyi, died after apparently drowning.
Davido shared a theatrical trailer on Tuesday, which revealed his album Timeless will arrive on March 31. In the clip, he’s seen carefully writing out a note under his own narration. “There is a time for everything,” he says.

Would you believe us if we said a hologram sponsored by the government of Ontario was one of the best things we saw on the second full day of SXSW 2023? There were plenty of flesh-and-blood performances that knocked our socks off, too, as the festival hit its stride with artists big and small from across genres and decades packing the venues that make Austin one of the greatest music cities in the world. Here are our top picks from Wednesday, March 15.

The beat tag “It’s Kel-p Vibes!” — cooed sultrily at the start of some of Afrobeats’ best tracks — is a signal you’re in for a good time. Kel-p is the 27-year-old producer from Lagos behind much of Burna Boy’s Grammy-nominated African Giant as well as Wizkid’s “Ginger,” and, as he tells Rolling Stone, upcoming projects from heavyweights like Davido, Wande Coal, and Adekunle Gold.
Kel-p is among a budding crop of Nigerian producers (including Pheelz and Young John) hopping up from behind the boards and pursuing careers as the lead act,...

In early 2021, things started to fall apart for Pheelz. That February, he released his debut EP, Hear Me Out, following nearly two decades of producing some of Afrobeats’ greatest hits. The EP was relatively successful, racking up millions of streams all around, but the process cost Pheelz a lot of money, leaving a huge dent in his finances.
Then, his girlfriend ended their five-year relationship, and his best friend of 15 years sent him a text one night, abruptly declaring their friendship over (for reasons Pheelz declines to expand on). “It...

Burna Boy, the Roots, Isaiah Rashad, Freddie Gibs, Tierra Whack, and more have been tapped for the 2022 Afropunk Festival, returning to the live music sector for the first time since 2019.
Having taken place virtually for the past two years, Afropunk will return to Brooklyn, New York’s Commodore Barry Park, on Sept. 10 and 11.
The Roots will headline Afropunk on the first night in celebration of their 30-year anniversary as a band. Burna Boy will take the stage for night two, marking his first U.S. festival headlining slot. The performance...

Leave it to FKA Twigs to take NPR’s stripped-back Tiny Desk series and transform it into a gorgeous, spellbinding showcase. The British-Jamaican polymath performed in three songs — including a new track called “Killer,” to be released later in June — in London’s St. Matthias Church, draped in candlelight. The baroque performance also included renditions of “Home With You” and “Cellophane,” from her 2019 album Magdalene.
Twigs showed the scale of her voice, backed by cellist Lucinda Chua, violinist and double bassist Damsel Elysium, and pianist Kelly Moran. In between songs,...

Minimalism goes a long way on “Infinity,” which demonstrates that a sing-song melody and a persistent beat are more than enough for a gently propulsive hit. P.Priime, the producer behind “Infinity,” managed to create a song with hardly any other instruments aside from voice and percussion. A keyboard stabs occasionally in the background, but Olamide and Lay do the heavy lifting, repeating the song’s title in pretty, cascading permutations.
“Infinity” appeared on Olamide’s Carpe Diem album last month. The single has been especially popular in Nigeria the last three weeks,...

DJ Tunez reconnects with his longtime collaborator Wizkid on “Pami,” a gentle breeze of a single that also features Adekunle Gold and Omah Lay.
“Pami” starts hesitantly, as if the synth player can’t decide whether or not to commit to the track. The arrival of a light, rat-a-tat beat signals that this is, in fact, a song — a swaying, dream-like dance tune. The vocalists take turns crooning sweet nothings and loving entreaties while gleaming, pinprick guitar lines hang in the air and a lustrous horn section slides in and out of the mix.
