We think that every actor’s nightmare is to become a typescast after taking part in a movie they didn’t even like so much. Even if the film turned out to be a huge success and a well-received franchise. Or even if it got mixed reviews and was occasionally laughed at.
One of the most scandalous movies created in late 2010’s is the Fifty Shades movie series with Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. In the movies, they play the leading roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Still. Grey is a wealthy complex man with Bdsm preferences, and Still is a naive girl falling for the act.
Needless to say that the movies got a huge following: many viewers loved the kinky premise of it, some wanted to see how the actors handle the roles, and some just needed to watch it to later tell everybody how they cringed during the watch.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie is in hot pursuit of an Oscar nomination, but in the meantime the documentary about the beloved Hollywood star has picked up major awards at the Emmys.
The film directed by Davis Guggenheim won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special on Sunday on the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony in Los Angeles. Guggenheim also won Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program; the film’s picture editor, Michael Harte, was honored for his work and composer John Powell won for his score for Still.

Carol Burnett’s 90 Years of Laughter and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie were the big winners on night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, while Queer Eye — already sick with Emmys — took home yet another for Outstanding Structured Reality Show. So did RuPaul (for hosting Drag Race) and The Simpsons (Animated Series), naturally.
Burnett’s sentimental trip down memory lane won Variety Special (pre-recorded), while Still won for Outstanding Documentary and Director (Davis Guggenheim).
“This is very encouraging,” Burnett said from the stage, before telling everyone to drive home safely.
Barack Obama, who was sadly Ma from the awards show in downtown L.A.’s Peacock Theater, picked up a trophy for narrating Working: What We Do All Day, while Welcome to Wrexham racked up wins for Unstructured Reality Show, Editing and Cinematography.

Ireland’s Deadpan Pictures (“Northern Lights”) and France’s Thalie Images are teaming up on “The Continental Method,” an ambitious spy comedy thriller set against the backdrop of the Paris riots of May 1968.
The European half-hour series is inspired by the true story of Conor O’Flaherty, a fresh-faced Irish salesman who became an unlikely spy in Paris. The twelve-part show is penned by John Morton (“Dead Still”) and Victor Lockwood (“Mental”) who are leading a writing team.
Red Arrow Studios International will kick-off pre-sales at Mipcom for territories outside of France and Ireland. Deadpan Pictures is co-producing the show with Paris-based Thalie Images, which is part of Kabo Family, a subsidiary of Asacha Media Group.
‘The Continental Method” follows Conor O’Flaherty as he arrives in Paris to sell sweaters in the fashion capital of the world. Caught up in the fervor of the times, he falls for a radical...

Two Emmy-nominated directors talk about their approaches and the risks they took. For Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Davis Guggenheim explains how broke the conventional documentary rules he typically follows for the Apple TV+ movie — a risk that paid off with seven Emmy noms. And Emmy nominee Peter Hoar looks back on “Long, Long Time,” the episode of HBO’s drama series The Last of Us that took a major narrative risk to depict a romantic connection rarely seen on television.
‘Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie’ Director Talks His Approach to the Celebrity Biodoc: “I’m Always Looking for a Very Intimate Connection”
Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim is no stranger to bold-faced names, having worked with the likes of Al Gore, Barack Obama and Malala Yousafzai. But some three years ago, he found himself, as he says, “stuck.”
“I wanted to do something different. I wanted to find joy in my work.

Welcome to AdirondACTS Theater Camp in gorgeous upstate New York. Led by founder Joan Rubinsky (Amy Sedaris), the kids, a menagerie of the precocious and hyperactive, are about to put on a production of Bye Bye Birdie. The stage lights are on and––oh, wait. Never mind. Joan has just suffered a seizure from the strobing, so she’s in the hospital. Apparently the “documentary” filmmakers have only been on location for a day. Alas, we only know that because a title card tells us. We don’t really get to see anything, and via another card we learn Joan’s techbro of a son, Troy (Jimmy Tatro), has arrived to salvage the camp.
The jokes continue, largely of the predictable sort. He’s a chronic slang shitter with a ring light. He also, in what the film finds to be hysterical, just loves Post Malone. But wait: he’s not the focus either.

In this trailer for the new documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, the Back to the Future actor reflects on what’s kept him active and fighting years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “I’m a tough son of a bitch,” he says to the camera.
Directed by Davis Guggenheim, Still, from Apple Original Films, which premiered recently to good reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, incorporates documentary, archival and scripted elements to recount Fox’s story in his own words. “I was bigger than bubble gum,” the actor says of his post-Family Ties breakthrough into stardom in the 1980s.
The film recounts both his career and his never-before-seen private journey with Parkinson’s disease, including the years that followed his diagnosis at twenty-nine. Produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family, the film explores what happens “when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease.”

The Beatles and Rolling Stones were two of England’s biggest bands in the 1960s, yet they rarely crossed paths professionally. Paul McCartney said the press manufactured the rivalry between the bands, but it wasn’t hard to fabricate animosity as the groups rarely worked together and presented different images in the media (the clean-cut Beatles and grimier Stones). They recorded the same song twice, but outside of that, The Rolling Stones worked with The Beatles just twice.

Once Paul and John Lennon established themselves as ace songwriters, they weren’t above giving their songs to other artists. That includes The Rolling Stones.

DJ Khaled and Jay-Z closed out the 2023 Grammys with a dramatic performance of “God Did,” but the two rappers went home from the awards show empty-handed as both lost all of the awards for which they were nominated. Khaled went into the show with six nods while Jay-Z had five.
Similarly, past Grammy darlings Taylor Swift and Adele each only won one award despite multiple nominations.
While Swift is the only solo female artist to win three album of the year Grammys, she failed to collect another key big four award, losing the much sought-after song of the year prize for the 10-minute version of “All Too Well.” However, the music video for that won an award during the Grammys’ Premiere Ceremony, but Swift wasn’t there to collect what would be her one award of the night.

On Wednesday morning, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon led a virtual discussion in partnership with global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to educate the immunocompromised community about medical options, like a long-acting monoclonal antibody, that offer added protection against Covid-19.
Academy Award-nominated writer and producer Gordon, who was diagnosed with adult-onset Still’s disease while dating her now-husband, actor, producer and Academy Award-nominated writer Nanjiani (who recently starred as Kingo in The Eternals), inspired their breakout hit The Big Sick, says that “immunocompromised people have been very much sidelined in this conversation,” but that this initiative, produced in collaboration with the Immune Deficiency Foundation, is “just for us.”
“It’s about building up a suit of armor for how you can protect yourself … and that there are many options you can talk to your doctor about, as I have,” Gordon told THR by Zoom.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies, and many more, at Trailers From Hell. This week we pour up some wine pairings for a few films directed by William Friedkin.
The Night They Raided Minsky’s, from 1968, is listed as Friedkin’s fictional description of the 1925 invention of the striptease. Well, burly-kew may not have seen the footlights until that time frame, but I’ll bet that the striptease was actually invented shortly after they came up with clothing.
The burlesque shows staged by the Minsky brothers were roundly criticized by decent folk, while famous poets, pundits and publishers whiled away the hours of Prohibition with live nude girls – well, nearly nude – up on the stage. The Minskys were routinely raided by the cops, and the whole burlesque business was shut down in the mid-1930s amid public outcry whipped up by...
