You’ll quickly ID one prime suspect in this drama about a veteran detective, Danny Frater (James Nesbitt), investigating the possible murder of his estranged daughter, Christina (Imogen King), and retracing her last days and hours in hopes of discovering the truth. Outlander’s Sam Heughan appears in the fifth of Suspect‘s eight taut 30-minute episodes, each on a potential perp. “Ryan’s got pent-up aggression — he’s quite unstable,” Heughan says of Danny’s corrupt ex-partner and Christina’s godfather. The men meet up in an Mma gym, where Heughan leaned on some old skills: “I did Muay Thai training in Thailand years ago. I enjoyed that breathlessness because Ryan is on the edge.” The British adaptation of Christoffer Boe’s Danish crime thriller Forhøret also stars Joely Richardson, Richard E. Grant, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Miller, Sacha Dhawan, Niamh Algar, and Antonia Thomas. Watch a trailer for the series below: Suspect,...

The former Jaime Lannister is a different kind of ruthless in “A Taste of Hunger,” a foodie film whose protagonist’s ambition is summarized by the opening epigraph: “If you ask me what I want, I’ll tell you I want everything.” Everything, in this case, is the restaurant world’s crowning achievement: a Michelin star, which since 1926 has designated the best of the best around the world. Only 2,817 eateries have been so honored, and director Christoffer Boe’s drama focuses on a restaurateur’s quest to become the 2,818th. The result certainly isn’t fast food, but neither is it fine dining.
While it would be wrong to say that “Game of Thrones” didn’t allow Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to display his increasingly impressive range as a performer, we certainly never saw the kingslayer obsessing over wild apples, French vinaigrettes or other mouthwatering delicacies. "You talk too much about food, Dad." "Well, it's my job." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the full US trailer for a Danish film titled A Taste of Hunger, an emotional drama about running a restaurant. This already opened in Denmark last summer, and is finally getting an official US release this month. This "power couple", played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Katrine Greis-Rosenthal, in the Danish gourmet scene run the popular restaurant Malus in Copenhagen. But that popularity isn't enough. Or is it...? Also starring Flora Augusta, Charlie Gustafsson, August Vinkel, Nicolas Bro, Maj-Britt Mathiesen, and Kent Dahlgren. Ohhhhh this looks fantastic. It reminds me of the outstanding Danish film Another Round, bouncing between hope & depression, with an authentic story about the trails & tribulations of life. Here's the official US trailer...

With more international co-productions in cinemas than ever before and a new crop of high-profile titles this year, Germany’s renown as fertile ground for foreign filmmakers continues to soar.
The number of German-backed cross-border titles in local theaters rose 30% last year to 98 — the most ever — and the trend looks set to continue. This year a slew of German co-productions are vying for Cannes’ Palme d’Or, among them Terrence Malick’s historical drama “A Hidden Life”; Jessica Hausner’s sci-fi thriller “Little Joe”; Marco Bellocchio’s mafia pic “The Traitor”; Corneliu Porumboiu’s “The Whistlers”; and Elia Suleiman’s “It Must Be Heaven.”
Key to the country’s filmmaking allure is a generous system of federal and regional funding sources and a dynamic film industry geared toward international co-production.
Leading companies include Pallas Films, whose credits include “It Must Be Heaven” and Sergey Dvortsevoy’s “Ayka”; Pandora Film, co-producer...

Already the highest-grossing Danish film ever — with each of its predecessors following closely behind — “The Purity of Vengeance” is the fourth adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s hugely popular “Department Q” novels about a Copenhagen cold-case police unit. It will also be the last in this particular series, as the screen rights have now transferred from Zentropa to Nordisk, with any future “Q” movies unlikely to retain the same cast or behind-scenes staples.

The Danish film industry is on a roll this year with berths secured at major festivals besides the Berlinale where Lone Scherfig’s “The Kindness of Strangers” landed the opening slot, just as Susanne Bier’s Sandra Bullock starrer “Bird Box” is breaking records on Netflix and first-timer Gustav Möller’s “The Guilty” made the foreign-language Oscar shortlist.
It’s a particularly good time because different types of local productions are performing well both at home, where the domestic share of total admissions was a strong 29% in 2018, and in the international arena, which is seeing a new generation of Danish directors coming to the fore.

Last year, Danish, Icelandic and Norwegian films triumphed with local audiences, fueling general attendance. In Sweden, local fare also upped their share of an overall sluggish market, while Finland had a quieter year after a record 2017. Everywhere “Mamma Mia-Here We Go Again” was number one except in Denmark where local films were back in favor.
Denmark
After two years of slide, Danish films were back in favour with local crowds, and boosted general admissions to 13 million (up 4.6%) and box office to Dkk 1.1 billion ($173 million). With 3.8 million admissions (up 34.2% from 2017), representing Dkk 290.9 million ($44.5 million) in revenue, local titles claimed a 29% market share, the success target just set in new Danish Film Agreement for 2019-2023.
“In a country like Denmark with a relatively small feature film production [21 films in 2018], the box office will inevitably vary from one year to the next,” commented Claus Ladegaard, CEO at the Danish Film Institute. The latter welcomed the...

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced its 2019 lineup, and it’s prodigious: 223 films from 78 countries, four of them world premieres. Though well known for celebrating future Oscar nominees (and winners) each year, the festival also boasts a deceptively robust world-cinema slate; among the upcoming offerings are Jia Zhangke’s “Ash Is Purest White,” Sergey Loznitsa’s “Donbass,” Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s “Birds of Passage,” and Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s “Asako I & II,” to name just a few.

Christoffer Boe’s thriller “The Purity of Vengeance,” the fourth and final opus of the hit “Department Q” franchise, has scored the best opening for a local film at the Danish box office.
Produced by Zentropa, “The Purity of Vengeance” has sold more than 215,052 admissions since opening on Oct.4, underscoring the ever-lasting appeal of the Nordic Noir genre.
Louise Vesth, who produced the film at Zentropa, said that “considering the total Danish population counts about 6 million people, an opening with more than 215,000 admissions sold is incredible.”
“The Purity of Vengeance” was written by Bo Erhard Hansen (“The Art of Crying”), Nikolaj Arcel (“The Dark Tower”) and Mikkel Nørgaard (“The Absent One”), based on the fourth book of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s “Department Q” collection.

Time for a taste of some Danish mystery. Zentropa Entertainment has debuted the full official trailer for a Danish thriller titled The Purity of Vengeance, originally titled Journal 64. This film is about a series of mysterious disappearances in 1987 that are all eerily connected to the same person. The investigative thriller follows Carl Mørck and Assad from Department Q, who try to figure out how a bunch of dead bodies are connected and who's behind everything. The Purity of Vengeance stars Fares Fares, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Nicolas Bro, Anders Hove, Søren Pilmark, and Elliott Crosset Hove. This looks very cool, a bit like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films or even Fincher's Se7en, but with some unique twists. I am curious to see more footage from this and check it out whenever it hits theaters outside of Denmark. Dig in. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Christoffer Boe's The Purity of Vengeance,...

With the adaptations of Jussi Adler-Olsen's Department Q novels breaking box office records in Denmark - where previous entries The Keeper Of Lost Causes, The Absent One, and A Conspiracy Of Faith were all huge hits - it comes as no surprise to see stars Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares take on the parts of cold case cops once again for the upcoming Journal 64. Christoffer Boe takes over the director's chair this time with the story revolving around a series of disappearances in 1987. Boe brings some of his favorite supporting actors along for the ride - yep, that's Nicolas Bro tucked away in the trailer because it just wouldn't be a Boe movie without him -...

Cast: Sonia Suhl, Lars Mikkelsen, Sonya Richter. When Animals Dream is the first feature-length film from Danish director, Jonas Alexander Arnby. This artsy body horror/drama premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, receiving well-deserved critical acclaim. In the film, sixteen-year-old Marie struggles to form an identity in a small coastal town. To make matters worse, she discovers that she's not like other females, or other humans. Although female coming of age stories are fairly common in horror movies (2000's Ginger Snaps being one of the better ones), there is something unique about this picture. Something subtle. Without copious amounts of violence and gore, this picture slowly tightens its grip, pulling the viewer in. This is not a start to finish action-packed edge of your seat film,...

The winner was picked by a single juror, Us director-curator Craig Baldwin who described The Uprising as “a film which, in turn, saddened me, frightened me, outraged me, inspired me, and ultimately made me truly proud to be a part of the democratic project and the struggle for human dignity.”
The Uprising, which was produced by Brussels-based Rien à voir production with the UK’s Third Films of Duane Hopkins and Samm Haillay as co-producers, had its world premiere in Jihlava.

Sex, Drugs & Taxation
Written by Christoffer Boe and Simon Pasternak
Directed by Christoffer Boe
Denmark, 2013
Sex, Drugs & Taxation begins with a title card warning us that though much of this story is true, many aspects are also untrue. The film is director Christoffer Boe’s exploration of the way memory can be molded and reconstructed. In it, the memory in question is that of society as a whole (or in this case, Denmark as a stand-in for society at large), shaped and reshaped to paint a particular portrait of two public figures.
The figures in question are Simon Spies (Pilou Asbæk) and Mogens Glistrup (Nicolas Bro), two real-life figures from 1960s Denmark. Spies was a millionaire playboy, not unlike Howard Hughes, who became known to everyone in Denmark when he created the country’s first cheap airline with the help of his mousy tax lawyer, Glistrup. The film chronicles their weird,...

Just as you are unlikely to ever come across a more unlikely friendship than that which blossomed between browbeaten tax lawyer Mogens Glistrup and hedonist playboy Simon Spies through the 1960s in Denmark, you are equally unlikely to settle on a more unlikely filmmaker than Christoffer Boe to tell their story. Best known for serious fare that treads the line between arthouse and genre film while toying with ideas of love, memory and obsession, Boe here tackles a real life story of sex, drugs and discount airlines and the results are utterly compelling.Nicolas Bro (Adam's Apples) plays Mogens Glistrup, an intelligent but intensely socially awkward tax lawyer desperate to escape from the shadow of his overbearing father in law when he encounters his old school...
