Turns out “Utopia” wasn’t a perfect fit at Amazon.
The streamer has canceled the sci-fi drama after only a single season, Variety has confirmed. News of the axe coming down on “Utopia” comes just over two months after it launched.
Inspired by the British series of the same name, “Utopia” hailed from “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects” writer Gillian Flynn, who served as showrunner and executive producer.
The eight-episode conspiracy thriller centered on a group of comic fans who met online and bonded over their obsession for a seemingly fictional comic. Together, Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop), Ian (Dan Byrd), Samantha (Jessica Rothe), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) and Grant (Javon “Wanna” Walton) unearthed hidden meanings cloaked within the pages of the comic, predicting threats to humanity. They realized these are not just the makings of a conspiracy; they are very real dangers coming alive right now in their world.

Amazon Prime Video dropped a deleted scene from Episode 7 of “Utopia” during the Gillian Flynn-created thriller’s virtual panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday. In the previously-unseen clip, Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop) goes to meet with a man who didn’t appear in Season 1. It turns out this is the collector who sent the winning bidder to the fan convention to get “Utopia” for him.
Now, this guy still wants the comic book he paid for and he wants it now, and he’s willing to trade Becky medication to treat her Diels in return for betraying Jessica Hyde (Sasha Banks), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges), Ian (Dan Byrd), Alice (Farrah Mackenzie), Grant (Javon Walton) and really the entire world.
As fans know, Becky is dying of Diels, so this decision is not an easy one. She ultimately chooses not to go through with it but as she leaves...

The eight-episode first season of Gillian Flynn’s “Utopia” launched Friday on Amazon Prime Video and if you’ve already finished it and are searching for information about its second season, you’ve come to the right place. However, we must tell you right away that while Flynn “always intended for there to be a Season 2” of her adaptation of Dennis Kelly’s British TV series of the same name, Amazon hasn’t renewed it just yet.
But the “Gone Girl” author tells TheWrap she’s “hopeful” that decision will come soon and allow her to give fans the backstories for Kevin Christie (John Cusack), Jessica Hyde’s (Sasha Lane) father, and the mysterious Home.
“I have an entire mythology written out of how everyone is connected,” Flynn says. “How Home came into being. How Christie came into being,...

Despite the fact Jessica Rothe was heavily promoted as one of the leading ladies of Gillian Flynn’s “Utopia,” her character, Samantha, was shot and killed by Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane) at the end of Episode 2, leaving behind Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) and Ian (Dan Byrd) to follow the crazed woman who just murdered their friend.
So why did Flynn kill off Sam, the girl who knows the most about the “Utopia” comic book conspiracy, the leader of the pack, and an all-around good person who was just trying to help?
Well, for starters, Sam was born just to die.

A strange virus is causing fatalities throughout Middle America. A group of folks who’ve been chatting online for some time think there’s some bigger, deep-state conspiracy behind it all; they’ve found a series of documents that they believe possess clues as to the nefarious forces behind not just this pandemic, but a host of other so-called “natural disasters” and catastrophes. Meanwhile, protesters are storming the streets and demanding answers, while a rich, morally suspect authority figure — and his equally dubious adult son — promise a miracle vaccine any minute now.

The following contains some light spoilers for Utopia.
The more common question in Utopia might be “Where is Jessica Hyde?” but “Who is Jessica Hyde?” is just as pressing. Is she friend or foe? Protagonist or antagonist? In the Amazon series, she’s both the star of a mysterious comic book that foretells viruses, biowarfare and man-made diseases, and a real person. She’s the young woman at the center of Utopia’s mystery and, as played by Sasha Lane, she’s what happens when a unique character meets a powerhouse actor.
Getting to know Jessica Hyde means understanding that she is in a fight for her life. A mysterious organization has been pursuing her for as long as she can remember. Escaping them and going on the run, first with her father and then without, transformed her into a feral yet complicated person.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Utopia,” streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
For the first season of her Amazon Prime Video adaptation of Dennis Kelly’s original U.K. drama “Utopia,” Gillian Flynn wanted to end on “one of those old-fashioned cliffhangers” in which the audience would be wondering, “How can our hero possibly get out of this?” she tells Variety.
And she succeeded whether you think the hero of the story is Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane), a young woman who was raised in a secretive facility, treated as a lab rat, and became the central character in a comic book also called “Utopia”; one of the nerds (as Flynn affectionally calls them), a rag-tag group of fans of the comic who first met online and then got pulled into the very real conspiracy hidden with the book’s pages; or even Dr. Kevin Christie (John Cusack) himself,...

When author and showrunner Gillian Flynn was adapting Dennis Kelly’s U.K. drama series “Utopia” for Amazon Prime Video, the areas she wanted to lean further into were the titular comic book that united her core characters and revealed a dark conspiracy about the outbreak of a global virus, as well as the backstory of a key character, Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane).
“It was an opportunity where we can really tell a whole other layer of story on top of story,” Flynn says.
While Flynn and staff writer Ryan Enright penned the comic book script, the visuals came from artist João Ruas. Flynn was a fan of Ruas’ work from Bill Willingham’s comic book series “Fables,” and the fairy-tale style he used there perfectly matched what she had in mind for “Utopia.”

In the absence of trustworthy institutions and the constant simmering resentment pulsing through politics and culture alike, the concept of some vast conspiracy tying all the disparate threads together must be, in its own twisted way, a comfort. When life feels particularly scattered, and faith in brighter days has dimmed, the idea that there are definitive answers out there just waiting to be discovered — no matter how wild they are — is all too tempting as an escape hatch from reality. But in Gillian Flynn’s “Utopia,” the conspiracy theorists are the ones living in reality. Everyone else just trying to go about their lives is just biding their time before the cataclysmic end.

Gillian Flynn’s new show Utopia has been in the works since roughly the time her 6-year-old daughter was conceived. The girl is affectionately known as “Kick” — after what she used to do in the womb while the author was working away on the TV series.
“She could go feral very quickly, and I say that with all affection,” the bestselling thriller writer-turned-showrunner tells Rolling Stone. “There’s an instinct to tame [children], I think, and I try to resist that. Girls especially need that particular skill set of fierceness — the willingness to push back.

A comic book story contains a web of real-life conspiracies in the new trailer for Utopia, set to premiere September 25th on Amazon Prime Video.
Created by acclaimed writer Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects), the series centers around a comic book called Utopia and a select group of fans who believe there are hidden messages contained in the pages that predict actual events. In a chilling — although certainly unintended — parallel to this real-life moment, the superfans find themselves confronting a deadly pandemic that the Utopia comic says will lead to humanity’s downfall.

‘Utopia’ Trailer Finds John Cusack, Rainn Wilson on Different Sides of a Pandemic Conspiracy (Video)
It’s the end of the world as we know it in Amazon’s newly released “Utopia” trailer — but it doesn’t look like anyone feels fine about the situation.
In the trailer, you’ll meet John Cusack’s Dr. Kevin Christie and Rainn Wilson’s Dr. Michael Stearns, two great minds on two very different sides of a pandemic conspiracy. While Dr. Stearns appears to be doing all he can to contain the threat to humanity, Dr. Christie seems to have a sinister plan up his sleeve.
Amazon Prime Video dropped the clip, which you can view above, Tuesday, when it was also revealed the eight-part conspiracy thriller series from “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn will premiere Sept. 25.

Showrunner Gillian Flynn revealed in today’s virtual TCA session that she is taking her version of Amazon’s Utopia in a slightly different direction from the British original. The Dennis Kelly-written counterpart received many complaints of brutality and adult content. When asked how Flynn felt about depicting violence, she replied that it would not be a big focus for the American series.
“I’m more ‘less is more’ as far as violence goes,” she said. “I’m the person who loves that moment in Rosemary’s Baby where we’re only seeing part of the conversation whereas the whole audience is trying to look around the corner to see what’s happening, or obviously Jaws. I’m a big believer in that. I don’t want it for a cartoon effect or for shock value. I think we as an audience are past most of that as pure shock value.

Amazon dropped the first teaser for “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn’s upcoming thriller series “Utopia” during the show’s Comic-Con@Home virtual panel, revealing just how deep the show’s rabbit hole goes. The answer: way deeper than anyone in-universe was expecting.
In the clip, which is available via the video above, you’ll meet a group of young comic fans who discover the conspiracy that the graphic novel “Utopia” is actually real, despite the fact they are told it’s just “a story about a rogue scientist who created biological warfare.”
Things get trippy as John Cusack’s Dr. Kevin Christie asks in a voiceover, “What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world?” and Rainn Wilson’s Dr. Michael Stearns straps on a hazmat suit before inserting himself “into a viral pandemic,” while Ian (Dan Byrd), Becky (Ashleigh Lathrop), Samantha (Jessica Rothe), Wilson...

Amazon Prime Video has released a new trailer for its long-gestating American adaptation of “Utopia.”
The one-minute trailer imagines the end of the world with snippets of young comic fans who discover that the conspiracy — and beloved protagonist — in a graphic novel (entitled “Utopia”) is real. Its ominous cinematography and editing capture their high-stakes journey to save humanity.
“It is a story about a rogue scientist who created biological warfare,” says an unnamed character in the trailer, which you can watch above.
“We have no idea what the end of the world’s gonna bring, [but] french cut string beans aren’t gonna save anybody,” says another character.
During the Comic-Con@Home panel for the show, writer and executive producer Gillian Flynn said that even though she started this project almost seven years ago, it has “never felt more resonant.” She also shared her adaptation process for fans of the original British series.

Putting aside for a moment the premise of Amazon Prime Video’s new original series, Utopia, the highlight of the teaser trailer that dropped during the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel was the appearance of 80s-film everyman John Cusack alongside Rainn Wilson of The Office and Star Trek: Discovery. What a combination! Add to that the fact that the series comes from best-selling author and award-winning screenwriter Gillian Flynn of Gone Girl and Sharp Objects fame, and it’s clear that Utopia has an incredible pedigree right off the bat.
Utopia is inspired by the British series of the same name and is described as a “twisted and ironic” thriller about “saving the world while trying to find your place in it.” Cusack mentioned in the panel that he was drawn to the remake even though his character is not present in the UK version. “I was aware of the show in the UK,...

Actor John Cusack will star in a series to play Dr. Kevin Christie in the upcoming show Utopia. In the Amazon series Utopia, a group of young adults who meet online are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organisation after they come into possession of a near-mythical cult underground graphic novel. They discover that the conspiracy theories in the comic's pages may actually be real and are forced into the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.
Cusack will play Christie, a charismatic, media-savvy and brilliant biotech mind who wants to change the world through science. He is the latest addition to the cast, after Rainn Wilson joined the project to play Michael Stearns and Sasha Lane is set to portray Jessica Hyde.
Utopia marks Cusack's first starring role in a TV series. He is widely known for his roles in films like Say Anything and High Fidelity.
