A musical inspired by the life of Alicia Keys and a play that loosely draws on the story of Fleetwood Mac — Hell’s Kitchen and Stereophonic, respectively — cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. Both received 13 nominations, more than any other show this year.

Actors have to learn to do all kinds of interesting things in order to play various roles, from accents to dance moves to various skills and hobbies. Jennifer Lawrence learned how to skin and gut a squirrel for her role in the 2010 Kentucky holler noir "Winter's Bone," for example, and the actors in James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to learn how to hold their breath for an extended length of time. For Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part One" and "Dune: Part Two," star Timothée Chalamet theoretically had to learn quite a bit, because there are many aspects of life on the desert planet Arrakis that just don't have direct Earth counterparts. It's not like he can just magically understand what it's like to be surrounded by the psychic power-giving spice, for example, but he certainly has to pretend. As his character Paul Atreides, who is destined to become the Muad'dib,...

From the widespread fear that the repeal of Net Neutrality would eventually force us to pay a dollar for every Google search to the misguided belief that Matt Patricia would turn the Detroit Lions into an equally fearsome version of Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots dynasty, recent human history is filled with incorrect predictions and wild overreactions. But few false alarms rang louder than the Y2K frenzy, in which much of the world spent 1999 panicking that the new millennium would cause the technology that powered our society to instantly stop working once years started with 20 instead of 19. The fear was grounded in some semblance of reality, but any potential catastrophe was averted when the world’s top computer programmers worked together to resolve the problem before we closed the book on the 20th century.
But if the only lasting legacy of Y2K is the inspiration it provided...

Christopher Walken is a national treasure.
Over a brilliant stage and screen career that spans over seven decades, the man has never been less than captivating. He's turned in shattering dramatic performances in classics like "The Deer Hunter" and "The Dead Zone" (which also happens to be one of the very best Stephen King movies), and made us cackle like fools on his numerous "Saturday Night Live" appearances and, well, I'm not sure what the heck he was doing in "The Country Bears," but he's the only reason I'm still thinking about an otherwise listless Disney family flick 22 years after the rest of the world has forgotten it.
And he's lost none of his ability to delight and confound (sometimes in the same moment) as he nears his 81st birthday this month. Walken will just keep struttin', and the world is a better place for this.

Mild spoilers for "Dune: Part Two" follow.
"Dune: Part Two" is loaded with hot young stars — Timothée Chalamet! Zendaya! Austin Butler! Florence Pugh! And nestled among all these new Hollywood faces is someone from the old school: Christopher Walken. When Walken joined the "Dune: Part Two" cast as Shaddam IV, the Padishah Emperor of the Known Universe, I was thrilled. Not because I'm overly familiar with "Dune" lore (I've never read any of the books), but because the prospect of seeing Christopher Walken in a big sci-fi epic as the "Emperor of the Known Universe" sounded pretty damn cool.
Sure enough, Walken shows up in "Dune: Part Two" and walks away with every brief scene he has. It's not a big role. It's not a showy role. But Walken, sporting puffy white hair and a hang-dog expression, has such gravitas, such heft as a performer, that he makes a meal of every tiny morsel.

If it does nothing else, Dune: Part Two completes the circle of the Fatboy Slim-Arrakis EU. By opening with Christopher Walken’s Emperor Of The Known Universe, this might just be the quirkiest, and most unexpectedly sly, thing about the movie — even if it favours only the morose side of an aging, diminished monarch. If this empire, which runs on Spice and hierarchy, has been built on centuries of sorrow and pain, then all the beauty and all the horror has taken its toll on the Emperor, who sighs with his eyes, and lets documents fall gently from his fingers. Walken refuses to dance, even as he sits on the edge of a most grand and beautiful stage. More is the pity. Back...

"This is your life! Right here, right now!" The famed art house cinema in New York called Metrograph has introduced a new screening series of movies called 25Y2K. They're borrowing inspiration from the brilliant Crtierion Channel collections, featuring a thematic selection of iconic movies to feature in a special package. This time they're looking back at Y2K, and the "Millennium Bug", and how it affected cinema. "A computer glitch that was supposed to drown the world in darkness—[was] on everyone's lips, the air thick with the anticipation of apocalypse. Did that anxiety impress itself on some of the finest films?" Definitely. They're showing classics like Fight Club, Pi, The Truman Show, American Psycho, Strange Days, Audition, Being John Malkovich, Vanilla Sky, American Beauty, and others. To promote the series, Metrograph cut together a quick trailer with Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" which samples a line from the film Strange Days.

Merrily We Roll Along, the Sondheim musical revival starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, was Broadway’s sole sell-out last week, filling every last seat at the Hudson Theatre with an eye-popping average ticket price of $234.40.
The critically acclaimed revival added a hefty $1,811,423 to Broadway’s overall weekly box office take of $26,546,735. Total weekly attendance for the 28 shows on Broadway was 223,151 for the week ending November 5; both the total gross and attendance figures held fairly steady from the previous week.
Though Merrily was the only show at 100% of capacity, a few others came close. Both Hamilton and The Lion King were at 99%, Moulin Rouge! was 97% and I Need That, the just-opened comedy starring Danny DeVito from the subscription-based non-profit Roundabout Theatre Co., filled 98% of seats at the American Airlines Theatre.

Here Lies Love, the costly David Byrne-Fatboy Slim immersive musical that required an extensive renovation of the Broadway Theatre for its dance club setting, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, November 26.
When it closes, Here Lies Love will have played 33 previews and 150 regular performances at the Broadway Theatre.
At an estimated cost of $22 million, Here Lies Love, which uses a dance club setting to tell the story of the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos, will now be among Broadway’s priciest flops in recent years.
A long-gestating production, the musical had its world premiere Off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013, returning to the venue in 2014-2015. A West End production debuted at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2014, and a production opened at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2017.

‘Here Lies Love’ Teams With Gold House, The Asian American Foundation for Broadway Ticket Initiative
Broadway’s Here Lies Love, the disco-pop musical from David Byrne and Fatboy Slim about the infamous former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos, is launching a new ticket initiative tied to Filipino American Heritage Month.
In an effort to increase access to the historic musical, which features Broadway’s first all-Filipino cast, Here Lies Love‘s producers have partnered with Gold House and The Asian American Foundation (Taaf) on “Democracy in Action.” The initiative aims to raise $1 million in tax-deductible donations, which will go to subsidizing 33 percent of tickets to the show in October, a cultural heritage month for Filipino Americans.
“We are extremely proud of this initiative and grateful to our colleagues at Gold House and Taaf for recognizing the unique opportunity Here Lies Love creates to broaden the demographics of Broadway audiences,” said the show’s producers Jose Antonio Vargas, Patrick Catullo, Diana Dimenna, Clint Ramos,...

Today came the sad news that Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell died at 56. Smash Mouth is undoubtedly best known today for the fact their 1999 hit song "All Star" played at the very beginning of the first "Shrek" movie. Like with everything else related to "Shrek," the song has become a bit of a meme.
It's easy to forget, however, that before "Shrek" debuted at Cannes and went on to win the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, "All Star" was a smash hit way before Shrek. It was considered one of the best songs of 1999 and even got nominated for the Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal Grammy. While "Shrek" immortalized it, it was actually another film from 2001 that gave us the best use of "All Star," and one of the best endings to a movie of the last 20 years.

Thursday night’s audience at Broadway’s Here Lies Love got a surprise bonus performance when DJ Fatboy Slim, who co-wrote the musical with David Byrne, took to the stage and spun a one-night-only set following the show.
Among those audience members: Byrne, who hugged and did a brief dance with Slim (aka Norman Cook) when the DJ jumped from his stage booth to the dance floor of the heavily renovated Broadway Theatre. The DJ’s 90-minute set was his first New York City show in more than 10 years.
During the set, Slim spun such records as Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and John Paul Young’s “Love Is in the Air,” not to mention Byrne’s own “Lazy” and his Talking Heads classic “Once in a Lifetime.”

Broadway box office held steady last week, with most shows either keeping apace with the previous week or showing some increases. In all, the 28 shows grossed $31,189,129, about the same as the week prior even with two fewer shows on the boards.
Total attendance was 248,525 for the week ending July 30, down just 3% from the previous week.
While most of the shows either held roughly steady or reported small jumps, a few took larger strides. Both Grey House and New York, New York played their final weeks after posting early closing notices, and benefitted from last-chancers scooping up tickets. Grey House took in $644,100, a $232,018 increase over the previous week, with attendance at 98% at the Lyceum. NY, NY grossed $914,748, a $228,887 bump over the previous week, with 85% of seats filled at the St. James.

Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines who became notorious for the way she used her position to fund a lavish lifestyle, will be at the center of a new limited series that is being developed by producer Lisa Saltzman. “Chasing Imelda” is inspired by journalist Katherine Ellison’s biography, “Imelda: Steel Butterfly of the Philippines.” The announcement comes in a moment of, I guess, rediscovery for Imelda. After all, Marcos is the central figure in a new Broadway musical “Here Lies Love” from David Byrne and Fatboy Slim (there’s just something about all those shoes).
Ellison is a journalist, strategist and writer, whose examinations of the corruption of Imelda and her husband Ferdinand Marcos for The San Jose Mercury News won her a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1986. This limited series reveals the dark side of one of history’s most notorious figures and showcases...

In the last five years, Rita Ora has seemingly been everywhere: in the tabloids, as a panelist on The Masked Singer, a coach on The Voice Australia, in a handful of film roles including a supporting stint in Pokémon Detective Pikachu and collaborating on a smattering of singles with artists like Kygo, David Guetta and Tiësto. So it’s almost hard to imagine that her last album, Phoenix, was released in 2018. Ora’s name has remained on everyone’s lips—she’s made sure of it.

Box office for most Broadway shows last week wilted a bit as June’s Tony glow gave way to plain old New York summer heat, though a couple newcomers were among the handful bucking the downward trend, one very impressively so.
In its second week of previews, Back To The Future: The Musical grossed a whopping $1,222,731 for just six previews, filling 99% of seats at the Winter Garden. The stage adaptation of the Michael J. Fox comedy classic starring Casey Likes and Roger Bart opens August 3.
Another recent arrival, Alex Edelman’s Just For Us also made some dollar gains, if on a smaller scale. The well-reviewed one-man show took in $348,998 for the week ending July 9, nearly $20,000 more than the previous week even with attendance down a tad. A higher average ticket price – $64.73 compared to the previous week’s $58.44 – had some impact.

Back To The Future: The Musical landed on Broadway last week in overdrive: The stage adaptation starring Casey Likes and Roger Bart scored a dizzying $1,035,256 with just four sold-out preview performances at the Winter Garden.
The musical, which opens August 3, features a book by Bob Gale and new music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard – with additional songs from the film including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Direction is by John Rando, who did the same for the hit London production.

Same for attendance of 272,766, with 89% of available seats filled and the average ticket price at $122.85.

H.E.R. Way: Why Belle From ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Was a Dream Role for the Oscar-Winning R&b Crooner
A version of this story about H.E.R. and “Beauty and the Beast” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Few multi-hyphenates working these days can claim the take-over of industries quite like H.E.R. In just the last four years, the California native with the signature spectacles has racked up five R&b Grammys, an Oscar (for her stirring “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”) and a Children’s and Family Emmy for a tune from Netflix’s “We the People.” And after her spirited turn as the beloved Belle from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” in ABC’s 30th anniversary special, the Primetime Emmy might be calling.. And here’s the kicker: She’s only 25.

The Rolling Stones‘ “Sympathy for the Devil” changed a lot over the course of its creation. The Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts said the song sounded like Brazilian music at one point. In addition, Mick Jagger explained why the track wouldn’t have worked as a ballad.

David Byrne has reached an agreement with the American Federation of Musicians’ Local 802 over his upcoming Broadway staging of Here Lies Love, Variety reports. The show will begin previews on June 17th with 12 musicians after the union called for Byrne to utilize live music in the production.
“Broadway is a very special place with the best musicians and performances in the world, and we are glad this agreement honors that tradition,” Local 802 president and executive director Tina Gagliardi said in a statement. The union previously criticized Byrne for his plans to use pre-recorded music in the musical, noting that the move would violate a mandated contract clause requiring 19 musicians to be hired for all musicals staged on Broadway. Gagliardi called the backing track structure “an existential threat to Broadway” that threatened the livelihoods of working musicians.

A labor union representing Broadway musicians has expressed its opposition to David Byrne’s upcoming staging of Here Lies Love due to the show’s plans to stage the production with pre-recorded tracks instead of live music.
“A show with no live music and just pre-recorded tracks is absolutely an existential threat to Broadway — and is a cultural threat to musical theater worldwide,” Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians President and Executive Director Tino Gagliardi said in a statement. “For generations, audiences have experienced Broadway shows with live music performed by the best musicians in the world, and by using just pre-recorded tracks it not only cheapens the art it’s putting jobs and livelihoods at risk. The use of pre-recorded tracks in the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim musical Here Lies Love is pitting New York City’s musicians’ union against the show’s producers, with the union calling the concept an “existential threat to Broadway” and producers saying the tracks are “part of the karaoke genre inherent to the musical.”
The musical, which received considerable critical acclaim during previous stagings Off Broadway and in London, re-tells the story of former Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos by setting the tale within a dance club environment. Rita Ora has released a new single featuring Fatboy Slim, ahead of the release of her third album later this year.
The pop star announced that her third album, You & I, will be released in July.
Ora’s new single “Praising You”, which pays homage to the 25th anniversary of Slim’s Grammy-nominated “Praise You”, is an Edm track about the entrancing nature of love.
“I’m incredibly honoured that we get to breathe new life into the song and re-introduce it to a whole new generation,” said Ora, who collaborated on the track with “Praise You” artist and producer Fatboy Slim (also known as Norman Cook).
“I think this record means something different for everyone, but from my perspective, it’s about praising your loved ones and really celebrating those relationships,” she explained.
The singer-songwriter, who has racked up over 10 billion streams, also shared a music video to accompany the track.
