Thomas J. Bliley Jr.(1932-2023)
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as an ally of the tobacco industry. Later, as leader of the powerful House Commerce Committee, he subpoenaed tobacco companies for the release of documents which showed that the companies knew decades earlier that tobacco is a carcinogen and that they planned marketing strategies to counter that fact.
He received a degree in political science from Georgetown University, and served three years as a Navy lieutenant. He later worked at his family's funeral home, including as company president.
