The Teachers’ Lounge, İlker Çatak’s unsettling look at a teacher at the end of her rope, beat our multi-Oscar winner All Quiet on the Western Front to win the top prize for best film at the 2023 German Film Awards, known as the Lolas.
Çatak won the best director Lola and his drama also picked up prizes for best screenplay and best editing, as well as the best actress nod for star Leonie Benesch.
But All Quiet did not go home empty-handed. The first German-language adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque classic 1929 anti-war novel won nine Lolas, including the runner-up silver Lola for best film.
Holy Spider, Ali Abbasi’s Iranian serial killer movie, which premiered in Cannes last year and was largely financed out of Germany, won the third prize Lola in bronze.
This year’s Lolas were held amid an atmosphere of turbulence and soul-searching. Recent revelations about the behavior of Till Schweiger,...

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).
The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.
There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.
As with some of the other below-the-line crafts categories, this doesn’t always have a direct correlation with Best Picture,...

Los Angeles, Feb 22 (Ians) Despite representing Germany at this year’s Academy Awards for best international feature, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ writer-director Edward Berger doesn’t feel national pride for the country.
“I don’t feel that because of the history,” Berger tells Variety.
“I could never say I’m proud to be German. Those words don’t fit into our mouths, and rightly so. I would have a hard time thinking I would represent the country because I can’t speak for the entire country.”
On this episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Berger discusses All Quiet on the Western Front’s nine Oscar noms – the second most of the year – and employing the most artisans of any non-English movie in history. Finally, he shares why he feels a responsibility to accurately portray Germany’s role in some of humanity’s most devastating wars.

After dominating the BAFTAs with seven wins, Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” just went from Oscars wild card to potential juggernaut in the craft races, where it is tied with “Elvis” for the lead with six nominations. In addition to the BAFTA-winning three categories, Edward Berger’s German-language World War I epic also grabbed nominations for makeup and hairstyling, production design, and VFX.
“All Quiet” appears to be on a similar Oscar trajectory as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2001), which also scored six craft noms. That’s a record for international features. Ang Lee’s martial arts spectacle (co-starring “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Best Actress nominee Michelle Yeoh) eventually won a record three craft awards: cinematography, original score, and art direction-set decoration (now production design). “All Quiet” hopes to at least match its success.

In a scene from Edward Berger’s adaptation of the classic WWI novel All Quiet on the Western Front, which is nominated for nine Oscars including best picture, Paul (Felix Kammerer) and other young soldiers face a new threat: the menacing French Saint-Chamond assault tanks, something that they had never before seen.
This sequence and more of the work on the film is discussed by Oscar-nominated composer Volker Bertelmann, supervising sound editor Frank Kruse, co-sound designer Markus Stemler and rerecording mixer Lars Ginzel, in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast.
The sequence that introduces the tanks in the Netflix movie begins with the soldiers in a field kitchen, when suddenly the table begins to shake violently. Something isn’t right, but they don’t know what it is. They rush to the trenches with their arms.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”
The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.
It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).
This was definitely the result of an unusually competitive field containing three sequels, a DC reboot (“The Batman”), a World War I actioner (“All Quiet”), a multiverse adventure (“Everything Everywhere”), an epic Hollywood comedy-drama (“Babylon”), and a musical biopic extravaganza (“Elvis”). It’s been a big week for Netflix’s anti-war epic “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Edward Berger’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s world-renowned bestseller rolled into the final days of Oscar nominations voting with surprise crafts momentum, qualifying for four shortlists along with the Best International Feature category as Germany’s submission. “All Quiet” then swept BAFTA nominations on Thursday, its 14 nominations equalling the record for a non-English-language feature set by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” in 2001.
Beyond the shortlists, cinematographer James Friend is an Oscar contender, too, despite being overlooked as an ASC nominee. He received a BAFTA nomination as recognition of his bravura work in capturing the sheer scope of the unrelenting artillery attacks and massive carnage on the battlefield with large format cameras.
