Thousands took to the streets in Malmö, Sweden to protest the Israel-Hamas war and the decision to allow Israel’s contestant Eden Golan to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest and its Saturday final. Some estimates said there were more than 15,000 protesters, though police pegged the demonstration at between 6,000 and 8,000 demonstrators. Israel and Golan ended up finishing in fifth place, with Switzerland ultimately taking home the victory, though Israel took a brief lead with a strong showing in the fan vote as the votes were announced.
In video shared on social media, protesters chanted “We will crush Zionism” and “There’s only one solution — Intifada revolution.”

Update: Activist Greta Thunberg has reportedly been removed from the protest outside the Malmö arena. She was pictured wearing a Keffiyeh scarf while being escorted away from the protest. It is unclear whether there was an arrest. She was previously quoted as condemning Israel’s participation in the competition as “artwashing.”
Other protesters outside the event were chanting “Shame on you” at attendees arriving at the arena.
Earlier: A crowd of protesters estimated by authorities at up to 10,000 took to the streets of Malmö, Sweden on Saturday, calling for an end to Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest being held tonight in the city.
Swedish police held back the crowd, who demanded that Israeli Eurovision contestant Eden Golan be removed from the final.

There are two halves of this street. Friisgatan, in the center of Malmö — the coastal Swedish town that is hosting the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest — has been designated as the “Eurovision street.” It’s pedestrianized, with bars and restaurants spilling out onto the street and numerous “selfie spots” for attendees to strike a pose. Yellow and pink bunting fly overhead. Most places are decked out with flags of the countries who, on Saturday night, will sing for a place in Eurovision history. But on this day, hours before the second semi-final,...

Eden Golan, Israel’s entrant for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, was booed during rehearsals Thursday, with the crowd in Malmö, Sweden, chanting “Free Palestine” during the singer’s performance.
Ahead of the Eurovision semifinal, Golan was performing her song “Hurricane” when sections of the crowd turned on her and the jeering began. In video clips posted to social media, audible boos can be heard during Golan’s rehearsal, with local media reporting that there were also political chants.

Outside the Eurovision venue in Malmö, a city long considered within Sweden as left-leaning with a rich history of protest, there have been ongoing demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza this week.

Israel participated in the Eurovision Song Contest on Thursday evening, as thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in the host city of Malmo, Sweden, to protest against the country’s participation in the competition.
The Israeli entry Eden Golan was booed during a rehearsal of her song Hurricane on Wednesday, but she was greeted with cheers – if not quite as euphoric as for some other acts – during Thursday evening’s semi-final, and was voted through to Saturday’s Grand Final.
The Jerusalem Post reports that, prior to the second semi-final, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu wished Golan good luck in a video.
In his statement, Netanyahu said, “Eden, I want to wish you success, but you have already succeeded. You not only face Eurovision n a proud and impressive way, but you successfully face a wave of anti-semitism while standing and representing the State of Israel with respect.”

Following their decision to step down from royal duties and move to America in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle signed a lucrative deal with streaming giant Netflix for upwards of $100 million. In late 2022, their six-part docuseries Harry & Meghan was released and became one of the most-watched documentaries on the platform.
However, the Sussexes’ next project Live to Lead, featuring interviews with Greta Thunberg and Jacinda Ardern, did not find popularity with audiences. Nor did another documentary showcasing Prince Harry’s Invictus Games titled Heart of Invictus, which was also labeled a flop after failing to crack Netflix’s Top 10.
But the prince and the former Suits star are now trying again to capture the magic they once had with some brand new content including a cooking show as well as a documentary about Harry’s favorite sport. And while filming the latter, Meghan had an awkward exchange that was captured by cameras.

There’s been a lot of speculation as to the future of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s deal with Netflix.
Fueled by their recent appearance at the premiere of Bob Marley: One Love in Jamaica, reportedly at the invitation of Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins, there’s been much talk as whether the duo would continue working with the streamer.
However, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria seemed to quell these doubts by teasing a few more royal projects in the works from the pair, who signed an overall deal in 2020.
“Oh, what are they working on,” said Bajaria at a Netflix slate event. “They have a couple of unscripted things they’re working on with Brandon [Reigg]. And they actually have like a bunch of development, they have a movie in development, a [scripted] series that they’re working on. So all very early development, with a movie, a TV...

Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in 1961. But questions surrounding his tragic passing in a plane crash, and his sexuality, refuse to die down.
“We know who he is, but we don’t know that much about him,” says director Per Fly, now bringing “Hammarskjöld – Fight for Peace” to the International Film Festival Rotterdam. His journals “Markings,” published posthumously, provided a way in.
“There he was, this powerful man, and yet his writings deal with loneliness and sacrifice. There was a fragile poet inside of a politician.”
With Beta Cinema on board, the film was produced by Patrick Ryborn for Unlimited Stories. Variety premieres the trailer here.
According to Fly, Hammarskjöld was also a man who couldn’t afford to love.

But with the overwhelming number of Gretas spilling out of the phone book, it’s easy to see how someone could get confused. That’s what happened after Lee auditioned for the part of Nora in Celine Song’s directorial debut, she told Andrew Scott in a recent Actors On Actors conversation for Variety.

Taylor Swift, Barbie and Hollywood strikers are among the nine contenders for Time’s 2023 Person of the Year, the magazine announced today.
Also up for the designation, in addition to various world figures, is Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
The annual selection chooses the individual, group, or concept that has had the most influence on the world throughout the previous 12 months. The 2023 Person of the Year will be announced on Wednesday.
The nine candidates were announced on NBC’s Today show this morning. See the full list below.
In considering the striking Hollywood writers and actors, Time said the workers displayed “a rare show of the power of both labor and the entertainment industry.”
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, Time said, “made clear the possibility for theatrical success remains even in a streaming world,” while Swift was noted for the re-release of her albums and “the highest-grossing global tour of all time.

A female student bravely investigates who is behind deepfake images of her online in this compelling documentary

Czech punk rocker visual artist Marta Kovarova says it was becoming a mother that made her realize she had to do something radical to fight climate change. So, five years ago, she embarked on making “The World According to My Dad,” which won the Czech Joy student jury prize at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival on Saturday.

Two weeks into the horrific war between Israel and Hamas, the state of online discourse has descended from “generally bad and stupid” to “unfathomably dumb and borderline dangerous.” Case in point: recent allegations that environmental activist Greta Thunberg, after posting a “Stand with Gaza” sign and demanding a ceasefire, was actually posting a Nazi dogwhistle. Later, the official X account for the Israeli government piled on, too.
On Friday, Thunberg posted a photo on social media of her holding a “Stand with Gaza” sign accompanied by other activists holding similar pro-Palestinian messaging.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was found guilty of disobeying a police order and will be fined. Thunberg will have to pay a total of 4,500 Swedish crowns ($414) for failing to leave a July 24 climate protest when police told her to do so.

Godfrey Reggio helped shape the syntax for contemporary commercial advertising, not to mention the music video, with his trilogy of experimental non-narrative films that began with 1983’s Koyaanisqatsi. Reggio’s autodidactic films require users to create their own meaning through the collision of hyperkinetically edited imagery with composer Philip Glass’s evocative music. At 83, Reggio isn’t resting on his laurels—or courting them at all.
After slowing down his rhythm to focus on extended shots trained on human faces in 2013’s Visitors, Reggio’s newest film, Once Within a Time, finds him once again working with more involved edits and compositions. Don’t call it a return to form, though, because he crafted something that looks and sounds quite different. The 52-minute short, co-directed with Jon Kane (who edited 2002’s Naqoyqatsi), conjures the look of Georges Méliès-era, hand-tinted frames while utilizing modern effects to overwhelm the dense frames with information.

Stop reading if you’ve seen this movie before — a wooden mannequin with the face of Greta Thunberg greets a horde of kindergarteners emerging from a steampunk Trojan horse under a dome of gigantic smartphones bathing them in hot blue light.

“No festival wanted this film,” Reggio tells Variety, smoking American Spirits and sporting a gray bushy beard while speaking on a Zoom call in his Sante Fe, N.M. studio. “Not even Telluride, where they celebrated the 40th anniversary of ‘Koyaanisqatsi.’ They didn’t know what to make of it.”

A pack of wolves howls at a massive iPhone that’s propped up in the snow like a monolith, an image from George Méliès “A Trip to the Moon” frozen on its screen. A steampunk Trojan horse — or is it an ark? — delivers a fleet of small children into the future, where they’re greeted by a marionette wearing a mask of Greta Thunberg’s face. Iranian human rights advocate and freedom fighter Narges Mohammadi has won the Nobel Peace Prize 2023, organizers of the award said Friday.
The Norwegian Nobel committee that awards the prize lauded Mohammadi for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”
It highlighted: “Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.” Mohammadi is still in prison.
The prize also “recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women,” the committee noted.
Iran has also been in focus for various Hollywood stars. For example, early this year, Cate Blanchett, Jason Momoa, Samuel L. Jackson, Jada Pinkett Smith and Bryan Cranston were among members of the entertainment industry publicly supporting calls to end Iran‘s execution of protestors,...

Exclusive: ITV is progressing on a landmark deal with British actors union Equity that would, for the first time, include provisions for AI and cloning on the likes of Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
Unions in the U.S. fighting tooth and nail for AI rights will likely be paying close attention and we understand ITV and Equity negotiators are sitting down tomorrow to focus on this specific part of the union’s claim.
Furthermore, Deadline understands that these same AI provisions have been tabled for Equity’s upcoming negotiations with the BBC and UK producer trade body Pact, which govern the vast majority of TV series in the UK.
When they sit down together tomorrow, negotiators from ITV and Equity will discuss AI claims and what is known as synthesisation, the potential for actors’ faces to be cloned and used in other shows, thereby leading to less work for performers.

A faux campaign led by environmental activists tricked some media outlets into reporting that Mattel would be launching a line of environmentally friendly Barbies and would be going entirely plastic-free by 2030.
The elaborate campaign claimed that Mattel would be soon launching a line of “EcoWarrior” Barbie dolls made from decomposable materials including mushrooms, algae, and clay.
The activist group who conducted the campaign, the Barbie Liberation Organization, included fake press releases and advertisements claiming to be from Mattel. The activist organization used the opportunity of the blockbuster “Barbie” film to call attention to plastic use within the toy industry.
In a clip that served as a fake commercial, environmental activist Daryl Hannah discusses detrimental plastic usage while picking a Barbie up from her stroll on the beach.
“Barbie and I are about the same age, except she will never die,” said Hannah referencing the barnacle-encrusted doll in her hand. The...

Actress and activist Daryl Hannah is featured in a new hoax ad claiming that Mattel is creating a line of Barbies called MyCelia EcoWarrior Barbies, which are supposedly plastic-free.
Hannah is the face of this fake endorsement in a video released by her where she asserts that “by 2030 all Mattel toys will be plastic-free starting with the iconic Barbie doll.” She continued to claim that “Mattel will support a federal ban on all plastics in kid’s toys and on single-use plastics.”
The “limited edition EcoWarrior Barbies” would have featured “the real world heroes of the environmental struggle,” including Phoebe Plummer, Julia Butterfly Hill, Greta Thunberg, Nemonte Nenquimo and one even named after Hannah.
The dedication to this fake campaign is remarkable, as spoofed press releases from Mattel, fake phone numbers, and a false website were all created.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was fined $240 for refusing police orders to leave a protest at an oil terminal in southern Sweden in June.
While protesting, Thunberg and other demonstrators were allegedly blocking traffic from accessing the facility, resulting in her arrest. She appeared at Malmo District Court and admitted to refusing to comply with police orders.
However, she denied that her actions warranted criminal charges.
“My actions are justifiable,” she said in court. “I believe that we are in an emergency that threatens life, health and property. Countless people and communities are at risk both in the short term and in the long term.”
Since 2018, Thunberg has been the face of the youth climate movement. Monday’s trial marks her first conviction for a climate protest.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have been nominated by the Hollywood Critics Awards for the successful streaming series. However, a royal commentator believes the series’ selection is nothing more than a “PR stunt” on the heels of the couple losing an Emmy nomination for the same series.

Some straight-to-streaming offerings inspire viewers to bemoan the movie’s fate, wishing it had received a proper theatrical release — to be seen the way movies are meant to be seen, and by the widest audience possible. “Crater” isn’t one of those, but neither is this Disney+ original mere algorithm-created dross. Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s lunar adventure follows five young friends as they hijack a rover to visit an enigmatic crater for one last hurrah before one of them leaves the moon forever. It’s sci-fi informed by a Gen-z sensibility, with a particular focus on those Zoomers who can’t imagine a bright future on the planet they actually inhabit — an ever-expanding demographic, one imagines.

The trailer (below) has launched for documentary “Planet B,” which will have its world premiere at Visions du Réel film festival as part of its Grand Angle strand.
In the film, director and climate activist Pieter Van Eecke follows 13-year-old Bo, who has a seemingly perfect life: She lives in a peaceful neighborhood in Belgium, has a loving family and lots of friends, and is doing well at school. Like many young people, Bo questions everything and has a rebellious streak. As she follows the news, she becomes increasingly aware of the perilous state of the planet. She decides to take up the fight against climate change and joins Extinction Rebellion, along with her close friend Luca.
They occupy factory sites and highways, and soon grapple with the forces ranged against them. They are ignored, criticized and arrested, even spending time in police cells. As Luca proposes increasingly radical action,...

Big Brother, every version of it, has had its fair share of controversy over the years. When a group of (supposedly vetted) contestants are thrown into a house where they are watched 24/7, their true characters always emerge. And since the internet is unforgiving, fans research the players and dig up things they thought were buried years ago. That is precisely what happened to Andrew Tate in Big Brother.

UK networks are being told to get real on deepfakes.
In a note sent to broadcasters today (April 3), media regulator Ofcom advised them to “consider carefully” whether they need to update their compliance procedures to account for the risks involved with deepfake content.
Ofcom listed a number of challenges that deepfakes pose to broadcasters, flagging “misinformation and disinformation,” “trust and credibility degradation” and “fairness and privacy,” the latter focusing on how audiences could mistake deepfake footage of real people “in a way that could result in unfairness to them or potentially unwarrantably infringe their privacy.”
While acknowledging “there are clear benefits to broadcasters” from the use of deepfake technology such as the potential to increase audience engagement, the regulator warned networks to be vigilant in the growing area of “Synthetic Media,” which encompasses deepfakes.

The legal principle of “another body” is cited by local and state law enforcement to not pursue charges against the creators of deepfake pornography, content easily generated by online communities that mostly focuses on celebrities and political leaders. The issue is just starting to gain traction as the technology becomes cheaper and easier, and as troubled, vindictive men (both young and old) experiment and take requests on message boards.
While targets of deepfake porn include every actress in Hollywood along with frequent targets of misogyny (e.g. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Greta Thunberg), they do enjoy one advantage that an anonymous college student does not: it would never be assumed to be real nor disqualifying for future prospects.

If only Joel were vegan, maybe he could’ve prevented the end of the world in “The Last of Us.”
PETA has released a new commercial, airing on TV this weekend ahead of HBO’s “The Last of Us” season finale, that uses some very familiar scenery and music to warn against the dangers of eating meat. The ad also uses a young female orphan in the video, attempting to draw parallels to Bella Ramsey’s character Ellie on “The Last of Us.”
In the video, the girl walks around a run-down, post-apocalyptic city while listing off all the rules that parents give their children — which, typically, don’t include eating vegan.
“You said it was your job to protect me. You were always telling me what not to do. ‘Don’t run with a lollipop in your mouth. Don’t touch the light socket. Don’t go near the stove.

On Amber Ruffin’s latest segment of “Amber Says What” on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” the comedian responded to Bill Cosby’s plans to go on tour, George Santos lying about his personal life and the recent uproar over Hollywood’s nepo babies and Greta Thunberg’s unintentional takedown of Andrew Tate.
It’s been a jam-packed last couple of weeks for news, and to help cover some of the topics Meyers is unable to touch on, Ruffin steps in with her segment “Amber Says What” to give a brief breakdown.
One of her first topics was about the New York Magazine article “How a Nepo baby Is Born,” which points out a number of celebs and their now-Hollywood successful children.
“So, the way it works is if a famous person has a child, and that child grows up to be famous, they’re a nepo baby. Like Seth,...

Kevin Hart became a voice for the people on Saturday night when he went on a profanity-laced rant on CNN’s new rule preventing Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen and other presenters of the news network’s New Year’s Eve broadcast from drinking on-air.
Hart talked with Cohen and Cooper from Las Vegas, where he was ringing in 2023 with a stand-up special. In front of a well-stocked bar, Hart downed a shot for the two hosts, saying that they had been “hoodwinked” before he got in some expletives past the censors.
“I can’t believe they pulled this shit on you guys!” Hart cried out as Cohen and Cooper broke into fits of laughter. “That’s right, CNN, I said s—! I said horses—! I said bulls—! I said it all! I’m pissed. I’m pissed you got these two guys sober up here today! Here’s a shot...
