I first caught Rob Price’s tense short Strangers at the London Film Festival back in October where it stood out to me amongst the other shorts playing through its distinctively unnerving atmosphere. It follows a lonely dog walker as she ventures through a vast, open field. There she encounters a man who starts up a seemingly innocent conversation but as their chat unfolds, there may be more to him than meets the eye. What I really connected with in Price’s short is the dread-filled ambience he creates both through the dynamic between his characters and the darkened, disturbed cinematography he employs to display it. It really is a great example of how to create tension through each aspect of a film’s production. Directors Notes is stoked to present the premiere of Strangers in conjunction with a deep dive with director Price on the journey of making his short,...

Vampir is the directorial feature debut and recently released folk horror film by Branko Tomovic, who is the subject of our latest Q&a, answering questions about his inspirations, filming in Serbia, and his transformation into one of the undead!
I've read that the film is inspired by real life vampire cases in Serbia. Can you talk about the research you did into these cases and how they inspired you? What was the most surprising story or fact you encountered during your research?
Yes, Vampir was inspired by the real vampire cases that occurred in Serbia in the early 1700’s. Most people always think of Romania or Transylvania when they hear the word vampire because of Bram Stoker’s novel, but the origin was actually in Serbia, it was medically documented by Austrian doctors back then. I spent my summers as a kid in that part of rural Serbia where my family is originally from.

In this all new movie we find Morticia and Gomez distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. "I'm having these weird dreams... since I arrived." A promo trailer has debuted for an indie folk horror film titled Vampir, from Serbian actor / filmmaker Branko Tomovic, who writes & directs & stars in this. It's still looking for distribution, no release is set yet. A man from London goes to a remote village in Serbia to look after the cemetery. He starts to have nightmarish visions and suspects the local villagers have a more sinister intention with him. "Our film is inspired by those early myths, superstitions and folk elements that surrounded the first real vampire cases in Serbia in the early 1700s... Our film is set in modern times and I wanted to show a more mysterious side of Serbia," Tomovic explains. "On another level, the film also serves as an allegory of an immigrant child who was raised abroad and comes back to his ancestry's country, where he is confronted with the local habits,...
