“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” were among the film winners at the 39th annual Casting Society Artios Awards.
The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The celebrations were in person for the first time in three years, taking place in Los Angeles and New York City with hosts Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman dividing up emcee duties between the cities. There was also a ceremony for casting directors in London.
With the newly added Academy Award for casting, the night certainly was a celebration. Starting in 2026, there will be a prize for best achievement in casting, the culmination of a campaign for recognition that has taken decades.

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

Too often, we define marginalized groups as targets of oppression or as social justice fighters, but rarely as just regular people who wake up every day, pee, go to work and have sex like the rest of the world. Director Richard Wong attempts to offer this more humanized narrative that centers on disabled characters in his surprisingly tender new comedy, “Come As You Are.”
But in doing so, he provokes a similarly important thought: Why are all the leads played by able-bodied actors?

The casting branch of the academy is only five years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 34 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”). This year’s awards took place on Thursday (Jan. 31) on both coasts. At the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, winners included three of the Oscar frontrunners for Best Picture: “BlacKkKlansman,” “Green Book” and “Vice.” (see full list of winners below).
In addition to the seven film categories listed below, the Atrios Awards honored Laura Dern with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement while Tina Fey and Jeff Raymond received the Marion Dougherty New York Apple Award and casting directors Robert J. Ulrich, Eric Dawson and Carol Kritzer were feted with the Hoyt Bowers Award.

Chicago actors have another reason to go home. The Windy City, which has long had a thriving theater community, is now hosting a growing number of TV series. And these productions aren’t just looking for local day players. “It’s been an explosion,” said Mickie Paskal, who, together with her partner Jennifer Rudnicke, cast Showtime’s “Shameless,” among several other series. Recently, series ranging from USA’s “Sirens” to ABC’s “Mind Games” to NBC’s “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Crisis,” have set up production in the city. “It’s not been unusual to have one or two series shooting here at a time, but to have this number is fantastic,” said Paskal. In The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue (which has to be one of the catchier names on the indie horror scene these days), we meet down on their luck brothers Jarman (Laflamboy) and Marion (Bradecich). Just back from a failed stint raising llamas, Jarman has just returned to the rapidly depopulating Chicago building managed by deadpan brother Marion who's got his own struggles to contend with.
See, the gas has just been shut off in the building and Marion's been left to deal with the fact that their building's electricity is being stolen from a church next door. The only tenants that remain are a generally disagreeable bunch including a couple of cranky oldsters (including horror icon Robert Englund), a prostitute and an apartment full of stoners.
As if all of that wasn't enough to deal with, the brothers suddenly realize that all the pets in the building are disappearing...
