With 11 feature films, six live-action series, nine animated series — and, lest we forget, one holiday special — the original “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” is starting to feel like it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. “Ahsoka” occupies an interesting spot at the nexus of “Star Wars” storytelling from the past couple decades, though.
The Disney+ series acts as a bridge between the worlds of Dave Filoni’s work on the excellent animated “Rebels” and the innovative technical approach to “The Mandalorian.” Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), former apprentice to Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), may have the challenge of trying to preserve the galaxy in the face of sinister threats from Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and others, but “Ahsoka” has the challenge of blending templates set in animation with the demands of live-action — and pushing both forward, as the show takes Ahsoka and the...

Tran Anh Hung’s simmering gastro-romance is the latest dish in a cinematic feast ranging from The Godfather to The Lunchbox
The term “gastroporn” got thrown around a lot when The Taste of Things was in cinemas recently, but I’m not sure it’s quite right for Tran Anh Hung’s sumptuous culinary romance, seductive as all the cookery on display is. Though it has many a languid, exquisitely lit pan over the finished dishes created by Benoît Magimel’s 19th-century gourmet – including a giant, glistening vol-au-vent that I’ve been thinking about for months – it’s less about money shots than it is about foodie foreplay. The film’s greatest pleasures are in its extended sequences of preparation and process; the silently, adoringly intuitive collaboration between Magimel and Juliette Binoche’s fellow cook; the thrill of watching experts at work. Ok, and there’s a near-seamless match-cut from...

The friendships on New Girl are just as important to the series as the romantic relationships. The show wouldn’t be what it is without the unique dynamics of the central friend group, both as a whole and within different pairings. Some friendships on the show are more expected, like Cece (Hannah Simone) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), and are there from the beginning to the end of the series. Others kind of appear out of nowhere, like Nick (Jake Johnson) and Tran (Ralph Ahn), and yet it’s hard to imagine the show without them.
New Girl is a great reminder at how important it is to let comedies explore relationships both within and outside of the core friend group. It’s one thing to see how the characters get along as a whole, but pairing people off who may or may not have much in common initially is an...

For a lot of MCU fans, and Black Widow fans in particular, one of the most baffling choices the movies have made so far came in "Avengers: Endgame," when Black Widow/Natasha (Scarlett Johannsen) and Hawkeye/Clint (Jeremy Renner) tried to throw themselves off a cliff before the other could do it first. The cliff-jumping part made sense — one of them needed to die to save the world, and it was in character for both of them to sacrifice themself so the other could live. The questionable part was when Natasha successfully stopped Clint and flung herself to her death. It was a sad yet heroic end for her character, sure, but on a meta-level, wouldn't it make more sense for the movie to kill Clint?
No disrespect to Clint of course, but he was the less interesting of the two Avengers. He served his role well and had a heartwarming friendship with Natasha,...

Former The Bachelor contestant Jenn Tran is the new Bachelorette for Season 21. The 25-year-old Vietnamese American was among the final six in the running for Bachelor Joey Graziadei’s heart, but despite being eliminated in Episode 7, she left enough of an impression for producers to bring her back. Though the announcement was a bit anticlimactic, Tran is still making history as the first Asian American Bachelorette.
Tran said she feels “grateful and honored” to have been chosen. She shared during the finale that “Growing up, I’ve always wanted to see Asian representation on TV. I feel like it was really sparse. Anytime Asians were in the media, it was to fill a supporting character role, to fulfill some sort of stereotype and I always felt boxed in by that because I was like, I don’t see myself on screen. I don’t see myself as a main character.

Chicago – The great food movies of cinema history … think “Babette’s Feast” or “Big Night” … use food prep cinematically as a palette for the senses. Warning: Don’t see this film hungry! Delicious shots of delicious food in a luscious landscape fill the French romantic drama The Taste Of Things but it is the perfect Valentine’s Day movie, particularly if you are a foodie, or a romantic. A visually luscious film starring Juliette Binoche, the story centers on two people who express their love for each other and for fine food, by cooking together. Set in 1889 in an old rural manor house, The Taste Of Things creates a beautiful dreamworld in the French countryside where the abundance of the land provides all they need. The Taste Of Things is a feast for both the eyes and the hungry heart, with the bonus of the Oscar-winning Juliette Binoche. It was the official Oscar entry for France.

There would be no "Star Wars" without Akira Kurosawa. The fabled Japanese filmmaker was a massive influence on creator George Lucas and his vision for a galaxy far, far away, with his period adventures "Seven Samurai" and especially "The Hidden Fortress" informing so much of the Jedi's aesthetics and philosophy, as well as the plot and characters of "A New Hope." Creatives on more recent "Star Wars" projects have only continued to mine inspiration from Kurosawa's oeuvre, with Rian Johnson drawing pretty explicitly from the director's classic "Rashomon" for the perspective-shifting flashbacks to Luke Skywalker's confrontation with his nephew Ben Solo in "The Last Jedi."
For "Ahsoka," a spinoff of "The Mandalorian" and live-action sequel to his animated series "Star Wars Rebels," creator Dave Filoni -- who's since been promoted to chief creative officer of Lucasfilm -- looked to another Kurosawa film entirely for the show's most fantastical outing yet.

The first season of "Ahsoka" on Disney+ delivered plenty for longtime "Star Wars" fans to enjoy, particularly those who love the animated shows. Dave Filoni, the creative force behind "The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," was finally able to bring many of his creations to life in live-action. One of the most important things that the show's first season brought to life was the World Between Worlds, a hugely important plot device from the final season of "Star Wars Rebels." But making the mythical realm a tangible thing was no easy task.
Quyen Tran, one of two cinematographers who worked on "Ahsoka" season 1, spilled some of the show's secrets in the January 2024 edition of International Cinematographers Guild Magazine. "Translating that from animation to live-action was thrilling, but highly stressful," Tran said of making the World Between Worlds a reality. Jessica Tran thought she was too old for TikTok.
As the founder of and sole car cleaner extraordinaire at her business Jt Mobile Detailing, she’d had to get on Instagram to promote. She’d gotten some decent feedback to her Stories and short videos, which made her wonder if she could do even better by filming longer videos showing full car cleanings. TikTok was blowing up, but she was convinced it was for the younger crowd and that, since she didn’t have fancy camera equipment, “it was out of my depth and that it wasn’t something I should consider.”
Then she got a car in that went beyond her usual cleanings. It was a “disaster detail,” she...

Last time Benoît Magimel appeared in the Cannes competition, a vision in Albert Serra’s Pacifiction, he played a foreign diplomat who stalked an island of French Polynesia like a trashy king. If Serra’s otherworldy film told a cautionary tale about feckless Euro-decadence, Magimel’s latest is more like a revelry. Adapted from Marcel Rouf’s 1924 novel The Passionate Epicure, The Pot-au-Feu is a film about the pleasures of preparing food and consuming it, the idea of cooking as an act of giving and even of love––if a leitmotif exists in this film’s script, it is the sigh of ecstasy.
The Pot-au-Feu is directed by Tran Anh Hung, a Vietnamese filmmaker who broke out at Cannes in 1993 with The Smell of Green Papaya. For Pot-au-Feu, Magimel stars as Dodin Bouffant, a restaurant owner and famed gourmet––or, as one character christens him, “the Napoleon of the culinary...

In our Q&A series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, "How I Met Your Father" star Francia Raisa takes our call.
Francia Raisa has "zero clue" who the titular father is on "How I Met Your Father." But even if she did, her lips are sealed. "I do not think they will ever tell me, because I keep trying to figure it out," Raisa tells Popsugar. "At this point, I'm so confused, because even though I'm on the show, there are things that I don't even catch until it airs. I'm like, 'Wait a second, she said she kissed all of her friends. What does that mean?' And I didn't even hear that line until it aired."

The second season of Bel-Air, the dramatic reimagining of the hit ‘90s sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is in full swing, and so is the fashion.
Every Thursday, the cast is dressed in fashion-forward looks, starting in episode one with Jabari Banks’ Will wearing a purple-and-red suit from Grayscale, the luxury Los Angeles-based fashion house worn by stars including Nope’s Daniel Kaluuya, The Woman King’s Viola Davis and NBA player Kyle “Kuz” Kuzma.
Like the original, the Bel-Air characters use their fashion as a form of self-expression. Will Smith is the athlete from Philly who likes to dress in urban wear as a nod to where he’s from. Hilary Banks is the classy and polished girl boss of the family, and Carlton Banks is the outwardly prim and proper student, who wears only pants that stop above his ankle. It is the earliest of days in the James Gunn-Peter Safran era of the DC Universe, and while the trade breaks have hit fast and furious over the last two weeks, precious little has been confirmed.
Here's what we know for certain: Gunn is scripting a new take on Superman that will take place during Clark Kent's early days as a cub reporter for The Daily Planet. This means Henry Cavill, despite his much-hyped reappearance as the Man of Steel in "Black Adam," is moving on (though Gunn and Safran have said they're eager to find a role for him in their reimagined Dcu). While Patty Jenkins is exiting as director of the "Wonder Woman" franchise, there's been no firm announcement about Gal Gadot's future as the Amazonian superhero.
According to Gunn, we'll have to wait until early January for more in-depth details on their plans for the Dcu.

After scoring its first Best Limited Series Emmy win last year with “The Queen’s Gambit,” Netflix is hoping for a repeat victory with “Maid,” a 10-part drama based on the memoir of the same name by Stephanie Land. The series stars Margaret Qualley as Alex Russell, a young mother who leaves her abusive partner and attempts to start her and her daughter’s lives anew. Qualley recently reflected on the experience of making the show during a 2022 Emmys FYC panel hosted by Variety’s Jenelle Riley along with castmates Andie MacDowell and Anika Noni Rose, executive producer/showrunner/writer Molly Smith Metzler, cinematographer/director Quyen Tran, and executive producer/director John Wells. Watch the video Q&a above.
