Phoenix and Mara, a couple and noted activists for animal rights and environmental causes, will personally reimburse the rental cost for the first 500 people who pre-order the film on iTunes or Google Play ahead of its December 12 digital release date, IndieWire can reveal exclusively. To qualify, you must live in the U.S. and possess a Venmo account; all the fine print can be found here.
The two actors are not just supporting the film with their wallets — Phoenix and Mara have already hosted a screening of “The Smell of Money” in Los Angeles, and have met personally with some of its subjects.

The longtime couple hosted a special screening of the new documentary The Smell of Money on Saturday evening (October 14) at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica, Calif.
The documentary’s director Shawn Bannon, writer Jamie Berger, and producer Michelle Cho were also in attendance.

Here’s the synopsis for the documentary: “A century after her grandfather claimed his freedom from slavery, Elsie Herring and her community fight for the right to clean air, water, and the life they were promised. The Smell of Money is the true story of everyday people versus corporate titans, in a battle with life or death consequences.”

Hot Docs has wrapped its 11-day hybrid edition, handing out three more cash prizes, announcing audience top picks, and tipping the hat to the 225 films from 63 countries that screened during the festival.
