Columbia Pictures’ action-comedy movie “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is set to play in cinemas in mainland China from June 22, it was announced on Thursday.
Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the film is the fourth in the nearly 30-year-old Bad Boys franchise. It sees the titular Miami cops investigate corruption in the police force after their late boss is accused of colluding with a foreign mafia. But the tables are turned and the pair have to go on the run while still trying to solve the case.
The film releases in a multitude of international territories from June 5 and in North America from June 7. The China date, only two weeks later, is in keeping with recent trends that give Hollywood titles near-synchronized outings in the Middle Kingdom and a modicum of marketing runway.

Longtime Sony Pictures Entertainment executive Doug Belgrad is joining Netflix as vice president of film, joining the team assembled by the streamer’s new film head Dan Lin.

Doug Belgrad is joining Netflix as Vice President of Film. He’s Dan Lin’s first hire after Lin replaced Scott Stuber and laid off a bunch of staff. Stuber courted top filmmakers for years with hopes Netflix would embrace theatrical releases. We’ve heard rumors of buyer regret as films like Knives Out: Glass Onion sacrificed chances for big international grosses and went straight to streaming. No one can feel sorry, given the size of that deal, but streaming strategies are changing. Netflix is moving forward with a clearer mandate to make its movie slates specifically for its vast streaming audience, with platform releases happening only for films Netflix wants to qualify for awards consideration.
Belgrad spent 25 years, and was co-president under Amy Pascal. Upon exiting, he formed 2.0 Entertainment, and produced Gran Turismo and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die.

Doug Belgrad, a former Sony Pictures executive and the founder of 2.0 Entertainment, is joining Netflix as vice president of film. The hire comes as Dan Lin, the streaming service’s newly mint film chief, is shaking up the division, which has been seen as producing too few buzzy films despite spending vast sums of money. Lin, the producer of hits like “The Lego Movie” and “It,” was hired by Netflix in the spring to replace former film chief Scott Stuber, who stepped down in January, and he’s been putting his imprint on the business.
As Belgrad joins Netflix, 2.0 Entertainment will be overseen by Sophie Cassidy and Zack Conroy, two top executives at the company. Belgrad founded 2.0 Entertainment, a film and television production and financing company that is based at Sony Pictures, in 2016. Their films include “Gran Turismo,” “The Pope’s Exorcist” and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which is set for release this summer.

It’s been one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but then things went quiet for a while. Crowe recently said that The Pope’s Exorcist was meant to kick off a trilogy, but the franchise’s progress had been slowed down by “a change of studio heads.” Things have apparently been worked out, though, because producer Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz has just taken to social media to announce that the Pope’s Exorcist sequel has been given the greenlight!
Katz wrote, “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’S Officially Happening!!! “È un seguito, amici miei.”* Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.

Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but everything has been quiet since then. During a recent interview with The Six O’Clock Show, Crowe confirmed that a sequel is in development – and that The Pope’s Exorcist was actually meant to be chapter one in a trilogy!
As it turns out, things have been quiet on the Pope’s Exorcist front because there was a behind-the-scenes shake-up with the studio executives, but it sounds like Crowe still has hopes that the trilogy is going to happen. He told The Six O’Clock Show (with thanks to MovieWeb for the transcription), “(A sequel) is in discussion at the moment. The...

Will Smith is back to throwing hands — for good, this time — in Sony’s first trailer for its new “Bad Boys” movie. Along with the trailer, we got a title: “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” Hell yes.
Smith and his sidekick Martin Lawrence are back up to their old antics in the June 7 film. Four years removed from “Bad Boys 3,” in what we’ve all just colloquially called “Bad Boys 4” to this point, Smith’s Mike Lowrey is still a badass. Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett, well, he has a lot going on — including tummy issues. (A word of advice to Marcus: ginger ale is only a magic elixir if you forego the Skittles and convenience-store hot dog.)
The storyline goes a little something like this: Joe Pantoliano’s Capt. Conrad Howard is either dead or just being framed for a string of crimes he did not commit. He...

Sony is seemingly asking Lionsgate, “Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do now that Bad Boys 4 is coming for you?” It was recently reported that the John Wick spin-off, Ballerina, starring Ana De Armas, will be undergoing extensive reshoots, which will push the release date back from June 7, 2024 to June 6, 2025. According to John Wick star Ian McShane, “They’re new-shooting for Ballerina. You know, it’s like, they’ve gotta protect the franchise. […] And they wanna make it better cause they have to protect [the franchise].” However, Lionsgate, in need of a summer release, would move The Crow reboot, which comes from filmmaker Rupert Sanders and stars Bill Skarsgård, into Ballerina‘s original release date.

Several times in recent years, Sony has used the Cannes Film Festival to promote a key upcoming title, despite the movies not officially being involved in the event — see Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation in 2018, 2017’s The Emoji Movie and 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie.

“Better Call Saul” breakout Rhea Seehorn will be joining Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in the untitled fourth “Bad Boys” film, TheWrap has confirmed. Details of her character – and anything else pertaining to the plot of the movie – are being heavily guarded but no doubt will occur somewhere in Miami.
Seehorn played lawyer Kim Wexler for 60 episodes on Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould’s “Better Call Saul,” a spinoff of the popular “Breaking Bad” that is the rare example of a spinoff being just as good (if not better) than the original.
Seehorn has also been in several movies, everything from the Tim Allen version of “The Shaggy Dog” back in 2006, to the Netflix horror movie “Things Heard & Seen” with Amanda Seyfried (from “American Splendor” filmmakers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini), but this fourth “Bad Boys” will definitely be her biggest movie yet.

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

Ready, set, race.
The PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo” inspired the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a young teenager who began a racing career. Now, director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) is bringing that story to the big screen.
“Gran Turismo” stars Archie Madekwe as the aforementioned teen who aspires to become a professional race car driver with the help of his trainer (David Harbour) and a motorsport marketing executive (Orlando Bloom). Djimon Hounsou portrays Mardenborough’s father, while Darren Barnet plays a Gt Academy driver threatened by his new opponent.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally set to helm the feature in 2015. Also that same year, Blomkamp was attached to a fifth “Alien” film starring Sigourney Weaver.

The first trailer for director Neil Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo,” adapted from the popular PlayStation video game racing franchise, has been released.
Blomkamp, whose notable directing credits include “District 9” and “Elysium,” departs from his typical science fiction subject matter to take on the sports racing film. Based on a true story, “Gran Turismo” follows a young teenager who’s obsessed with playing the racing video game and gradually takes his controller skills onto a real racetrack with hopes to become a professional race car driver. Archie Madekwe plays the film’s main character, with David Harbour as his racing trainer, Djimon Hounsou as the teenager’s father and Orlando Bloom as a motorsport marketing executive. Darren Barnet plays a respected Gt Academy driver who feels threatened by the teenager’s fast-growing success.
The racing simulation video game franchise began in 1997 with a self-titled entry from developer Polyphony Digital, spearheaded by Kazunori Yamauchi.

Brit actress Melanie Liburd has been cast in Columbia Pictures’ upcoming fourth Bad Boys title in what The Hollywood Reporter understands is a leading role.
The as-yet-untitled movie — which reunites stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence with their Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah — is currently in production (Smith and Lawrence spoke to CinemaCon from the set in Atlanta via a taped message during Sony’s opening night presentation Monday). Liburd joins the film as a character called Christine.
The movie — the next instalment in a Bad Boys franchise that has so far amassed more than $840 million across three titles ($426 million from the third film alone) — is the latest significant credit on a growing résumé for Liburd, who had a major role in the third season of This Is Us and first and second seasons of Power Book II: Ghost. Made on a budget of $18 million, the supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), which stars Russell Crowe as real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, has racked up over $52 million at the global box office since its release earlier this month. Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems must be very satisfied with how well the movie is doing, because our friends at Bloody Disgusting have been informed that a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist is now in early development!
Details on the sequel aren’t available yet, but it looks like Crowe is going to have a rematch with the forces of evil.

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, the brand new horror movie from director Julius Avery (Overlord). The Screen Gems horror movie has thus far scared up $52 million worldwide, and Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist is now in early development.
Bloody Disgusting’s sources indicate that development is underway on The Pope’s Exorcist 2, but we don’t have any further details at this time. We do expect Crowe to return.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
The smart thing about The Pope’s Exorcist is that the production budget was quite low, reportedly just $18 million. This set the horror movie up for success, allowing it to become profitable in theaters after just one week of release. The same can’t be said about Universal’s Renfield, which reportedly cost $65 million and has thus far made just $17.9 million.

The leads of the Bad Boys franchise — played respectively by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence — added some star power to the festivities, even if it happened to be remote via a recorded message from the set.

Smith went on to say that they just started shooting as he was briefly interrupted by his co-star who requested that he correct the intro by saying that they are, in fact, not sorry that they couldn’t be inside the Colosseum tonight. “We had to be here, Will,” Lawrence noted,...

It is hard to look at any movie with “Exorcist” in its title and not immediately think of William Friedkin’s eternal 1973 Oscar-winning horror classic that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Nevertheless there have been dozens of films of various stripes that have tried to conjure their own magic in this sub-genre, but none that have managed to surpass what Friedkin and screenwriter William Peter Blatty did with that brilliant film.
Now though, with a bit of a twist we have a new entry, The Pope’s Exorcist, which is hoping to lure audiences with the promise of the story of an actual exorcist — and not just any run-of-the-mill demon slayer but rather Father Gabriele Amorth, who for 36 years plied his trade at the Vatican, rising to chief exorcist there in 1992 until his death in 2016.
