2024 really is the year of the Difficult Second Series: after wowing us in 2023 and even earlier, shows like The Tourist, Extraordinary, The Rig, Suspect and Bad Sisters are on the way back for another helping this year, but the question is: will they live up to series one?
In among this, a trio of behemoth shows coming back: Doctor Who will return for series 14, or season one as it’s being styled, the first with Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, Wolf Hall is returning after nine years to cover the late Hilary Mantel’s final book in the trilogy, The Mirror and The Light, and dystopian anthology series Black Mirror will return to Netflix for its seventh series. There’s even talk of a prequel series to Red Dwarf, if that comes off.

Kendall. Robinson. Duker. Ó’Briain. Martin. The fight is On.
The winners of Taskmaster series 11-15 are currently doing sit-ups, drinking pints of raw egg, and running up and down the steps outside Chiswick Library. They’re in training for Taskmaster’s third Champion of Champions contest.

What’s your favourite Taskmaster task? Did it result in a delicious failure or a triumphant win? Was it a crafty solution from a cunning mind, or a bonkers, impractical response that could only have come from the brain of John Kearns?
We asked our writers to nominate their favourites, in order (and not including Prize Tasks because that’s already been covered here), and collated the results into the Top 50 below. With 15 series proper, two Champion of Champions specials, and multiple New Year’s Treat episodes, there were approximately 89,000 tasks to choose from, hence a nice, neat 50.
If you’re at all concerned about the scientific robustness of our approach, rest assured that Google Sheets formulas were used in the creation of this list, resulting in an entirely accurate ranking order that cannot be questioned. Well alright, you can question it.
So, what are the best Taskmaster tasks of all time?...

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.
As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?
Take a look at these similarly delightful TV shows, including plenty featuring previous Taskmaster series alumni:
Man Down (Channel 4)
Starring the Taskmaster himself Greg Davies, this Channel 4 sitcom centres on his character Dan, a frankly terrible schoolteacher who is having an infinitely amusing midlife crisis. As you can see from the clip above, it’ll please fans of Davies’ scathing takedowns,...

Hooray! Taskmaster is returning to Channel 4 for its fourteenth series on Thursday 29th September at 9pm. There’s no denying the previous thirteen series have provided some moments of pure glory: Richard Osman fiendishly finding a loophole to the gruelling ‘Place These Yoga Balls On The Mat On Top Of That Hill’ task. Kerry Godliman’s genius quick change. When Mawaan Rizwan made a giant cow disappear.
But if there’s one thing the UK loves more than queuing, it’s an underdog. Or sometimes just someone who isn’t afraid to admit they simply can’t be arsed. And in many ways it’s the contestants’ biggest, most epic failures that make some of the show’s best moments.
So it’s lucky that for every series of Taskmaster there seems to be one last-place contestant trailing miles behind the rest, who seems hopelessly inept, or whose mind...

"What if the other side has already predicted every step you will take?" Peacock has revealed an official US trailer for a British streaming series titled The Undeclared War, originally made for Channel 4 in the UK. It already premiered there in June, but will start streaming on Peacock in the US this August. This British thriller series is about a fictional future (or perhaps it's a crystal ball?) in 2024 during the next UK elections. A leading team of analysts buried in the heart of Gchq secretly works to ward off a foreign cyber-attack on the country's electoral system. A young student is "quickly thrust into the center of an escalating data war with Russia that has dangerous implications extending far beyond cyberspace." Sounds scary, no? Starring Hannah Khalique-Brown as Saara, along with Simon Pegg, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Edward Holcroft, Adrian Lester, Alex Jennings, Kerry Godliman, plus Mark Rylance as John Yeabsley.

Warning: contains spoilers for the Trigger Point finale.
Trigger Point concluded with a tense, pacey and well-directed episode that revealed the bomber’s identity and closed the case. Wash’s nightmare month ended, finally giving her little ponytail a chance to rest. Along the way, she’d lost her colleague, her brother and her bit on the side, and had only managed to stop about fifty percent of the bombs from going off, but at least she could draw a line under it. The Crusaders were no more, their puppet master had been unmasked, and his mystery revenge mission was laid bare. Time for everybody to get down The King’s Head for a pint and a game of pool. Or perhaps not pool. Too soon.
Let’s dig in to the finale’s revelations. Prepare for dynamic entry! Trojan One, ready to engage…

Warning: this Trigger Point review contains spoilers.
Who is Lana Washington? Yeah, yeah, she defuses bombs, her partner exploded, she gets hot in a heatwave and has a little ponytail, but who is she? After episode one’s series of entertainingly tense set pieces, now’s the time for Trigger Point to deliver on character. Instead, episode two played it coy, adding only ‘does Sudoku’ and ‘has parents’ to the sum total of our knowledge about our lead. Somewhere in the rank depths of the internet, there’s a market for footage of Vicky McClure wordlessly putting on and then taking off a helmet, but prime time ITV1 isn’t it.
McClure’s not at fault here; the writing lets her down either by stretching too little plot over too much time or by simply failing to ignite. Lines like: “Listen Tom, I’m not a detective. I’ll happily...

Be happy, be kind, be Tony.
Ricky Gervais is coming to the end of After Life, the Netflix comedy series that he created and stars in and which has been watched by 100 million people around the world.
The final season marks a departure for the British comedian, who has never made a third season of any of his scripted series before – The Office, which spawned the NBC adaptation, Extras and Derek all ran for two seasons and a special.
Gervais is aware of this fact, telling Deadline in a wide-ranging interview that he really should have done a fourth season but that he didn’t want to risk the quality of the show dropping.
After Life, which returns January 14, follows Gervais’ Tony, a writer for the local Tambury newspaper, who is dealing with life after his wife, played by Kerry Godliman, dies. The third season picks up with the complicated...

How do you say goodbye to one of the best shows on the air?
Fans of Netflix's After Life will be forced to say goodbye on January 14 when the final season launches.
The streamer has unveiled our biggest look yet at the final episodes, and it looks like Tony (Ricky Gervais) has a new outlook on life.
After spending the time following his wife's death thinking that not caring was a superpower, the trailer teases him making good decisions.
We get to see Tony on a very different mission, finding very specific places to scatter his late father's ashes.
One of those places is a bar, and well, that goes about as well as you can expect when he's caught.
Set in the small fictitious town of Tambury, the show follows Tony, a writer for the local newspaper whose life is upended after his wife dies from cancer.

The trailer for After Life‘s third and final season reveals that Tony Johnson is on a mission — to scatter his father’s ashes — and affirm along the way that “caring about stuff is what really matters.”
Starring series creator Ricky Gervais and set in the small, fictitious town of Tambury, Netflix’s After Life has followed Tony, a writer for a local paper, ever since his life was upended by his wife’s death from cancer. While struggling with that immense grief, Tony started to realize that making other people feel good is what can give him hope — and a reason to live.

Ding ding, everybody off the Taskmaster bus! New passengers incoming! Series 12 – which taught us that Victoria Coren-Mitchell never learned how to ride a bike, Guz Khan owns more framed portraits of himself than is sensible, Desiree Burch can’t burst a balloon with a fork to save her life, Morgana Robinson is able to get goose bumps at will and Alan Davies still has a Jonathan Creek wig in his loft – has reached its climax. One lucky winner has skipped away merrily with the Taskmaster’s gleaming head as a prize and plenty of time to prepare for the inevitable Series 11-15 Champion of Champions special. Meanwhile the other four have skipped away safe in the knowledge that nobody is ever again likely to ask them to sit on a cake.
That means it’s time for the next line-up, which is confirmed to feature (in alphabetical first name order): Ardal O’Hanlon,...

All change! No sooner had Mike Wozniak charmed the nation by undermining a vole, and put us all off our tea with his downstairs casserole, than it was all over. Please give a warm welcome to series 12 contestants: Desiree Burch, Victoria Coren-Mitchell, Alan Davies, Guz Khan and Morgana Robinson.
Series 12 is set to air at an unconfirmed date later this year on Taskmaster’s still-relatively new home of Channel 4. It’s “Coming Soon” according to the post-finale teaser.
Also arriving in 2021 is the show’s second Champion of Champions special miniseries. That one is set to welcome back the overall winners from series six to ten: Ed Gamble, Lou Sanders, Kerry Godliman, Liza Tarbuck and Richard Herring. Made by “Marcella” producer Buccaneer Media as an original for AMC’s BritBox rival Acorn TV, “Whitstable Pearl” has all the ingredients of a travel-friendly crime series with a female lead in a picturesque English town.
And while the six part, 45-minute series slots in neatly with the streamer’s other small town crime canon, including Cotswold’s based “Agatha Raisin” and “Queens of Mystery,” Buccaneer execs Tony Wood and Anna Burns were keen to give the seaside town of Whitstable a Scandinavian edge.
Enter Norwegian filmmaker Øystein Karlsen, whose writing/directing credits include hit dark comedy dramas “Dag,” “Exit” and “Lilyhammer,” who was duly drafted in to adapt Julie Wassmer’s series of seaside mystery novels.
Karlsen’s vision for the show, based on Wassmer’s stories, he says, was “a whodunit served on a bed of warm interpersonal drama sprinkled with black humor.”

2020 brought many things with it. Brexit. Another iPhone. The 30th anniversary of Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. 10 short weeks ago, none of us had seen Richard Herring feed half a watermelon to a slathering Daisy May Cooper, and frankly, we were the worse off for it. Neither had we witnessed The It Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson philosophically asking “Am I the spider?”, known how rigorously Johnny Vegas would apply himself to the task of putting the heaviest thing through a Christmas tree-bagger, or enjoyed Mawaan Rizwan thinking that if he filled an egg with helium, it would float like a happy little bee. All these, the tiny joys of a new series of Taskmaster.

Ricky Gervais writes, directs and stars in the Netflix comedy “After Life,” which returned for a second season earlier this year. He is a two-time Emmy winner, taking home hardware for “The Office” and “Extras.”
Gervais recently spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria on blending comedy and tragedy on “After Life,” how the show resonates with audiences and the reaction to his latest Golden Globes stint. Watch the exclusive interview above and read the complete transcript below.

Netflix’s comedy series “After Life” accounts for 10 entries on the performer ballot, including creator/writer/director/producer Ricky Gervais, supporting player Ashley Jensen and lead actress Kerry Godliman. Gervais, a two-time Emmy winner for producing “The Office” and starring on “Extras,” plays Tony, a journalist who essentially becomes a grief addict after his wife dies of breast cancer.
“It’s the most overtly grown-up and vulnerable I’ve been as a performer,” Gervais told Gold Derby after the critically acclaimed second season began streaming on Netflix. He added about his character, “He’s sort of addicted to grief, because hope has let him down too much. There’s a staple in comedy, particularly sitcoms, and that is an ordinary person trying to...
