The films in contention for the 2024 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.” Our odds currently indicate that “Anatomy of a Fall” (16/5) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Holdovers” (37/10), “Past Lives” (9/2), “Maestro” (9/2), and “May December” (9/2).
Of the eight individual writers behind these five films, only Josh Singer (“Maestro”) has earned recognition in this category before. Indeed, he is looking to go two-for-two here after succeeding on his 2016 bid for “Spotlight,” which he co-wrote with its director, Tom McCarthy. Coincidentally, he shares his new nomination with the director of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper, who also has a personal stake in the Best Picture and Best Actor races as a producer and star of the same film.

Greta Gerwig could be in line for a hattrick of Oscar nominations this year for Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for her marvelous work on Warner Bros.’s “Barbie.” The multi-hyphenate co-wrote the movie with her partner, Noah Baumbach, while she brought to life the world of Barbie as a visionary helmer of one of the biggest films of the year. She has reaped three Oscar bids to date for two of her previous pictures. Let’s take a closer look at those races.
Her first bids came in 2018 for “Lady Bird,” which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California, in 2002. Saoirse Ronan stars in the lead role while Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges, and Laurie Metcalf also featured. “Lady Bird” was a critical darling, which meant that Gerwig enjoyed a good time at the Critics Choice Awards, securing nominations for both Original Screenplay and Director.

More often than not, Dick Wolf franchises feel untouchable.
Depending on how well actor negotiations have gone regarding artificial intelligence, it wouldn't be entirely unsurprising if, 20 years from now, we still have an AI-generated rendition of Olivia Benson protecting and advocating for abuse survivors on Law Order: Svu.
There's longevity in the Dick Wolf series, whether it's the Law & Order franchise or One Chicago. And by now, viewers have grown accustomed to a revolving door of beloved characters and actors over the years to sustain the series.
But is there a breaking point to that? Will there ever be a point, at least for the One Chicago series, where too many casting changes and a different formula for screentime for budgetary purposes reach a point of no return?
Budget Cuts Mean Less Screentime for Fan-Favorite One Chicago Characters

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

Chicago Med returns with the Season 8 premiere on September 21, and there is a lot of ground to cover.
The show packed in many stories for its Season 7 finale last fall, forcing the writers to deal with a lot of fallout as the show returns.

The biggest cliffhanger that the Chicago Med writers have to resolve is what happened with that fire at the apartment building of Will Halstead.

Chicago Med returns for its eighth season on September 21. Here’s what you need to know from its leading lady, Marlyne Barrett, who plays Nurse Maggie Lockwood. Where We Left Off This may be Chicago Med, but the Season 7 cliffhanger was all about fire. Flames moved through Dr. Will Halstead’s (Nick Gehlfuss) apartment building, potentially trapping him and fellow doc Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard). Meanwhile, Maggie (Barrett) dealt with the embers of an old love when daughter Vanessa Taylor’s (Asjha Cooper) birth father, Grant Young (Wayne T. Carr), reappeared. Where We Pick Up It’ll be all hands on deck as Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains), Lt. Commander Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), and mentor Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) work to treat the fire’s survivors, and as Season 8 begins, Maggie’s concern focuses on Will. “He’s one of my best friends, he’s my brother,...

Charge nurse Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) and her daughter, Dr. Vanessa Taylor (Ashja Cooper), may be in a better place in their relationship right now on Chicago Med, but will it stay that way? “When she went to find Vanessa, she wound up lighting a fuse, and she has no idea where that bomb is gonna go off,” executive producer Andrew Schneider teased during a recent One Chicago press day. “And there’s more explosions to come.” George Burns Jr/NBC Vanessa’s not the only key relationship in the Ed for Maggie. “[She’s] like this barometer that connects everyone, but in a very different way to a Dr. Charles [Oliver Platt] character,” Barrett said. “She’s running the Ed and making sure that the flow of the patients that come in are all cared for, but at the same time, she has this relationship with every single one of them.

Glenn Close is used to fighting for her characters. From the “boiling bunnies” anger of “Fatal Attraction” woman-scorned Alex Forrest to the outspoken brashness of “Hillbilly Elegy” grandma Mamaw, the seven-time Oscar nominee has never backed down from ensuring her roles feel authentic. It’s a dedication that’s carried her through a nearly five-decade-long career, and one that she carefully applies to every film.
That was a critical skill on her latest, “Hillbilly Elegy,” where her ideas about everything from scripting to prosthetics helped shape a role that — as even its fiercest critics had to admit — she gave her all. With the Golden Globe-nominated turn marks her fourteenth acting nomination, Close again had some essential scripting notes to offer for the outspoken role of Mamaw, based on author J.D. Vance’s own indelible grandma, Bonnie Blanton.

Florence Pugh is attached to star in a sci-fi courtroom drama called “Dolly” about a sex robot that murders its billionaire owner. Though the film has not yet been greenlit, Apple TV+ acquired it in a bidding war, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Vanessa Taylor and Drew Pearce are writing the script, which is still being developed. No director is currently attached.
“Dolly” is inspired by a short story from Elizabeth Bear that first appeared in “Asimov’s Science Fiction” in 2011. The story follows a billionaire who is killed by a sex robot, forcing police to determine whether the robot was the murder weapon or the actual murderer. The bot then shocks the world by asking for a lawyer and pleading not guilty in the ensuing court case.
Apple Studios would produce the film along with Pearce through his production company Point of No Return Films.

“Hillbilly Elegy” has garnered some of the worst reviews of 2020 (the film’s MetaCritic score sits at 39), with several film critics condemning the Ron Howard-directed drama for how it portrays its Appalachian setting and characters. NME critic Richard Phippen wrote the film “betrays the very people it’s trying to celebrate” by “failing to acknowledge the legitimate problems they face,” while Adam Nayman of The Ringer added, “The movie focuses on the so-called ‘forgotten’ citizens of red state America—but it has zero interest in actually exploring the group.” What do stars Amy Adams and Glenn Close make of the critical beating? Adams told NME the film’s themes are what’s most important and far outweigh its politics.
“I think the themes of this movie are very universal,” Adams said. “Whether it be generational trauma, whether it be just examining where we come from to understand where we...

J.D. Vance’s best-selling autobiography “Hillbilly Elegy” isn’t the most natural fit for the big-screen treatment, an often unwieldy mix of heartbreaking memoir, personal observations couched in sociological chatter, and cherry-picked factoids. In trying to understand how and why his Appalachian family faced hardships like domestic abuse, drug addiction, and poverty, critics noted that Vance’s perspective often revealed, at best, the limitations of his experience.
At worst, other critics said that Vance’s story was rife with racist and sexist ideology, a reliance on easily dispelled fallacies, and a resistance to blaming any of it on government and culture. As Sarah Jones put it in a searing “New Republic” piece, the book is “little more than a list of myths about welfare queens repackaged as a primer on the white working class.” It was also a bestseller, and one that many hoped might shine a light on segments of an increasingly divided America.

Once in a while, this critic feels as if he goes against the grain of the entire movie critique establishment. That is firmly the case with Hillbilly Elegy.
The J.D. Vance book of the same name was a huge hit and, supposedly, was an introduction to Trump’s America and an explanation for how the country voted in 2016. I prefer to think of it is a memoir about a boy who grows up and does good, despite the anchor pulling him down that is his family.
Ron Howard has brought Hillbilly Elegy to life for Netflix, and it features two Oscar-worthy turns by two actresses who have long been overlooked for an Academy Award, Amy Adams and Glenn Close. They play mother and daughter, with Adams also portraying the maternal role to Vance (Gabriel Basso). Well, at least she tries.
More often than not, Vance is the more mature one in this relationship.

Adapted by Oscar nominee Vanessa Taylor (“The Shape of Water”) from J.D. Vance’s bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy” is exactly the sort of mainstream heart-tugger that many moviegoers and Oscar voters embrace. Ron Howard knows what he is doing. He’s been to the Oscar party many times, from “Apollo 13” to “Frost/Nixon” and “A Beautiful Mind,” which all featured actors in top form.
Howard’s stock-in-trade studio drama is harder to come by these days. Always a canny Hollywood player (with his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer), Howard pivoted over the past decade to more indie-minded projects such as “Rush” and documentaries like “Rebuilding Paradise.”
Netflix backed “Hillbilly Elegy,” a resonant family story that will likely lure far more viewers than the movie might have generated in theaters, Covid or no. In fact, it’s likely that no studio would have backed this, even with two of the great...

In a time where the world is as polarized as ever, there seems to be a yearning to show oppression in all cultures. With Black Lives Matter gaining significant traction, a film about a Caucasian venture capitalist’s upbringing doesn’t feel exactly well-timed in our climate. Despite two magnificent actresses like Amy Adams and Glenn Close at the helm, director Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy” may face trouble on the awards circuit.
With a collective 13 Oscar nominations and zero wins shared between them, Adams and Close have long been considered as overdue as any actresses working today. Close is currently the most nominated woman in Oscar history without a win at seven, with Adams tied for second with Deborah Kerr and Thelma Ritter with six. Adams, whose significant nominations have included “Junebug” and “The Fighter” in supporting actress, has only been able to nab one lead nomination for 2013’s “American Hustle.

“It didn’t start with her.” That’s the most penetrating thing said about Bev (Amy Adams), the frazzled maternal trainwreck who makes everyone’s life miserable in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” Bev is a parasite, an addict, a narcissist, and a desperate user of others, notably her own family. In a word, she’s a mess. Her son, J.D. Hillbilly Elegy, director Ron Howard’s Netflix-bound next film, makes its Oscar aspirations quite clear upon the release of its first trailer. Indeed, we can already see how an impressive cast complements the clear head-turning moments of Amy Adams transformed before our very eyes as an addiction-addled mother amidst an unstable family dynamic.
