"Peaky Blinders" wasn't immediately the big hit it is today. The show first premiered on the BBC in September 2013, prior to making its way onto Netflix (which streams the series in the U.S.) in 2014. A streaming service also meant a larger audience would have the opportunity to witness the crimes of the Shelby family. Indeed, creator Steven Knight believes Netflix played a major role in the show's success, having previously observed, "People in America are willing to watch something set in Birmingham, whereas I don't think that was necessarily true when we started."
"Peaky Blinders" tells the tale of a fictional family of gangsters from Birmingham — the show is inspired by stories Knight heard growing up. The period crime drama heavily mythologizes the city's working-class and takes due time to set up its narrative. As such, it has something of a slow-burn start, which didn't instantly inspire confidence in...

Steven Knight has said he hopes Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, the dance theatre spin-off of his hit TV show, will travel stateside after it closes on the stage in Birmingham, England.
“After it closes in the UK in Birmingham we’re hoping it moves onto New York and then Boston because the show has massive international appeal, so I think this one can travel,” Knight told the BBC’s Radio 4 on Tuesday morning.
The stage show opened earlier this month in Birmingham, the English city where the original TV show is set. Speaking with Radio 4, Knight said he doesn’t believe the show could have started life in any other city.
“Birmingham has been a big, proud city for hundreds of years. I think there’s been a gap in its media image and presence. And I hope Peaky is the first of many things that will give the city an identity,...

“Peaky Blinders” will conclude with the British period crime drama’s upcoming sixth season, which has just begun production in the U.K., the BBC announced Monday.
“‘Peaky’ is back and with a bang,” creator and writer Steven Knight said in a statement Monday. “After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
Representatives for BBC did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on what other “form” Knight was referring to.

Ricky Gervais, pop star Mýa, actors Dame Judi Dench, Olivia Newton-John and Tzi Ma, and renowned conservationist Dame Jane Goodall have come together to record an impassioned video calling for a reset of humanity’s relationship with nature in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis and its zoonotic origins. However it’s two baby bears who have stolen the spotlight.
In mid-July, as the celebrities recorded their video messages, Animals Asia rescued two three-month-old moon bear cubs that had been illegally trapped and put on sale on the black market, and are now taking care of them at the Ngo’s sanctuary in Tam Dao, Vietnam.

Comcast-backed specialty channel Sky Arts is set to go free-to-air from September, after years of speculation around the delivery of the U.K. arts offering.

An open letter spearheaded by Animal Defenders International (Adi) and signed by nearly 100 experts, academics, and other concerned parties including Brian Blessed, Jenny Seagrove, Alexei Sayle and Benjamin Zephaniah, is calling for advanced non-animal research methods to be prioritised to accelerate the discovery and use of effective vaccines and treatments for Covid-19.

With just two weeks to go until the Oct. 4 launch date, Netflix has released a brand new trailer for the fifth season of “Peaky Blinders” — and it’s full of real and imagined violence, and one unfortunate scarecrow.
If you want to see Tommy Shelby use a Tommy gun to murder a scarecrow hung on a cross, watch the video above now.
Before it gets blasted to smithereens, the straw effigy of Cillian Murphy’s character delivers a sinister note telling him: “Look down on earth, and see the seeds you have sown.”

It’s been nearly two years since Peaky Blinders Season 4 was released on Netflix. Well, after that long wait, Season 5 has finally been given a U.S. release date! The six-episode Birmingham, UK set crime saga will be released in the UK on August 25th and in the U.S. on October 4th.
I love this show and it’s about damn time Season 5 gets a release date! Series creator Steven Knight talked about the upcoming chapter of the story saying that it begins with the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the Shelby family “seriously affected because they’ve invested their legitimate money and are going to have to fall back on the illegitimate money.” He also promised “shocks and surprises to come.”

Flat caps were out in force on Wednesday in Birmingham, England as the town welcomed the Season 5 world premiere of gangster epic Peaky Blinders. Birmingham is home to Peaky creator and writer Steven Knight, and to the series’ Shelby family that’s led by star Cillian Murphy’s Tommy. At a screening of the first episode of the upcoming season, Knight excited the crowd, saying that much of the next season will be shot locally. He added, “We have two more series to do and we are bringing Peaky Blinders home.” Deadline last year reported that talks were ongoing with the BBC on Seasons 6 and 7, and Knight’s comments certainly make them appear likely. However, producers and the network have yet to officially confirm.

Over 100 well-known names – including writers, actors, directors and musicians – have signed a pledge supporting Lorde's decision not to perform in Israel.
The statement was published in The Guardian following backlash over the Kiwi singer’s cancellation of her concert in Tel Aviv. It is a direct response to a full page ad published in the Washington Post on January 1 which called Lorde a bigot and also attacked her homeland of New Zealand.
“We deplore the bullying tactics being used to defend injustice against Palestinians and to suppress an artist’s freedom of conscience. We support Lorde’s right to take a stand,” reads the letter in The Guardian. "Shmuley Boteach, the author and promoter of the advert, supports Israel’s illegal settlements and wrote last month on Breitbart to thank Donald Trump for “electrifying the world” with his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in defiance of international law.

Peaky Blinders Season 5 is definitely happening... it just won't arrive until 2019.
Peaky Blinders Season 5 has officially been a thing since last fall's epic Season 4 finale aired in the U.K., when the BBC almost immediately confirmed that a fifth season renewal was already a done deal, set to return to our screens in 2019.
Of course, Peaky Blinders Season 4 reaped record ratings for its U.K. airing, on BBC Two, culminating with 3.6 million viewers tuning in for the finale. While we’ll probably never know the hard figures for its U.S. performance on Netflix – due to the streaming giant’s secretiveness over those things – the show can point to the binge habits of American audiences for a lot of its current momentum, especially after ratings had temporarily hemorrhaged during Season 3.

Creator Steven Knight and star Cillian Murphy discuss the BBC's epic new gangster drama
It represents an amazing period," says Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, of the British post-wwi drama whose impact some have predicted will parallel that of Boardwalk Empire in the USA. "As well as the upheaval, there was a lot of drug-taking, a lot of hedonism. The start of modernity, but a false start."
The opening episode begins in a Chinatown district, its inhabitants scurrying anxiously about. As we pan back towards a muddy street, it's clear that this is the early 20th century – New York, San Francisco, London, perhaps. The source of the consternation emerges – a man on a horse, plodding down an avenue of hovels, scattering the frightened locals. Determinedly, he performs a ritual involving the blowing of coloured powder into the horse's face. Finally, he speaks, in a thick accent, and the screen's date...

WikiLeaks confirms what grassroots people have been saying, which most of the media, including Guardian correspondent Rory Carroll, hid. Washington, which arrogantly assumed control of "democracy" in Haiti (and elsewhere), is keeping Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the twice democratically elected president it removed from power in 2004, out of Haiti (WikiLeaks points to Us meddling in Haiti, 21 January).
The beloved Aristide, who abolished the army and tackled poverty by mobilising the population, doesn't fit in with Washington's "democratic political future" for Haiti. But Duvalier, the dictator Haitians fought with bare hands to rid themselves of, who killed thousands and stole millions, is back. Asked about Duvalier's return, Us state department spokesman Pj Crowley said: "This is a matter for the government of Haiti and the people of Haiti." Asked about Aristide returning, he said: "Haiti does not need, at this point, any more burdens."
