Ania Trzebiatowska has compiled an eclectic selection of fiction and non-fiction titles for the third annual Sands International Film Festival, which kicked off Friday evening in St Andrews, Scotland.
Mounted across this weekend in the ancient university town, Trzebiatowska — also a full-time programmer at Sundance — runs the festival with an impressive gang of part-time student programmers from the University of St. Andrews, a partner on the festival alongside Joe and Anthony Russo’s Agbo. The Avengers: Endgame filmmakers are connected to the town through Joe’s eldest daughter, who studied at St Andrews. The two Russos were in the building this evening.
“I love the energy of this town. I love how warm everyone is and how enthusiastic the students are,” Joe Russo said opening the event. “It permeates the experience of being here. And it’s such an incredible backdrop for the festival for those reasons. It’s great...

The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. I will moderate that discussion, which will touch on the preposterously unlikely way that Soderbergh discovered and godfathered the career of the duo that directed Hollywood’s all-time highest grossing film, Avengers: Endgame. The festival runs next month from April 19-21.
Soderbergh’s own career took off with sex, lies, and videotape, the film that just celebrated 35 years since the filmmaker turned Sundance into a lucrative independent film hatchery. It went on to win the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, followed by Soderbergh’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He has gone on to direct films as diverse as Traffic, for which he received the 2000 Academy Award for Directing—the...

For the first time in more than 20 years, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has added a new category at the Oscars. Beginning with the 2026 ceremony, which will honor films released in 2025, the Academy Awards will include a category that honors the best achievement in casting, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new category will be part of the 98th annual ceremony.
This is the first new category introduced to the Oscars since Best Animated Feature in 2002, which honored the films of 2001. That makes it a pretty big deal. The Casting Directors Branch of the organization was first formed in 2013. It currently has nearly 160 members. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang had this to say about it in a joint statement:
"Casting directors play an essential role in filmmaking, and as the Academy evolves, we are proud to add casting to the disciplines that we recognize and celebrate.

The Oscars are set to get a little longer for a long-campaigned reason.
Ahead of the upcoming 96th Oscars, the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday, February 8, that there will now be an annual competitive Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. The new Oscar category will arrive alongside the 98th Academy Awards in 2026, which will honor the films released in 2025.
The news comes over a decade after the release of the 2012 premiere of the documentary “Casting By,” which highlighted the importance of casting directors in the filmmaking process, and suggested their work should be recognized by the Academy. Shortly after, in July 2013, the Academy created its Casting Directors Branch, which currently has nearly 160 members. Casting director Lynn Stalmaster, one of the subjects of “Casting By,” was also honored at the Governors Awards in November 2016, which made him the first person to receive an Oscar for casting.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences has announced that it will soon begin annually presenting an Oscar recognizing achievement in casting. The award, which will first be presented in 2026, will be the first new Oscar introduced since the organization began presenting best animated feature in 2002, after announcing its creation in 2001.
The announcement comes as something of a surprise, considering the pressure that the Academy has felt, especially in recent years, to consolidate the number of categories that it awards on its ABC telecast, in order to retain as many viewers as possible. (It has not yet been confirmed that the casting Oscar will be presented on the telecast, but it is hard to imagine that it would not be.) Twenty-three awards are currently handed out on the air, although the average viewer tends to care about only four or five.

As a result of elections that took place this year from June 5-9, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 55-person board of governors convenes in July, more than one-fifth of its seats will be occupied by people who were not a part of it in June.
This is the result not of a repudiation of incumbents — in fact, no incumbent who could have sought reelection opted not to, and no incumbent who sought reelection lost — but rather of stricter term limits that the board imposed upon itself in recent years.
For the 2023-24 term, the board — which is composed of three governors representing each of the Academy’s 18 branches except for the newly created production/technology branch, which has just one, plus three “governors at large” — will be joined by 11 rookie governors: Wendy Aylsworth (production/technology branch), David I. Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, documentary filmmaker Simon Kilmurry and writer Dana Stevens are among the 11 film professionals who have been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Thursday.
Those new governors are part of a wholesale makeover of the AMPAS board prompted by new term limits imposed last year. In 10 of the 11 branches where first-time governors were elected, the incumbent governors were unable to run again because of those new limits, which restrict governors to two consecutive three-year terms. Last year, when those limits were instituted, 10 governors were termed off the board and 12 first-time governors were elected.
This year’s election means that 23 of the 55 members of the board will be in their first or second term.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced its newly elected Board of Governors. The governors, who set the Academy’s strategic vision and watch out for the organization’s financial health, will take office at the first scheduled board meeting of the new term. Wednesday the board voted to expand theatrical release requirements in order to qualify for Best Picture eligibility.
Directors branch member Ava DuVernay is back on the 55-member 2023-2024 Academy Board of Governors. So is producer Lynette Howell Taylor. The incumbents stay, while the ones who have served their three-year term move on, to be replaced by someone else. And, after three terms, like those served by Charles Bernstein and Jon Bloom, they are permanently termed off.

As massive as the entertainment industry is, there’s a small-world aspect to it that You Hurt My Feelings star Owen Teague can attest to as much as anyone. The Florida native’s career really took off when he was cast to play a young version of Ben Mendelsohn’s Bloodline character, Danny Rayburn, in mere photographs and old home videos, as that led to proper flashbacks and the critical role of Danny’s troubled son, Nolan. Andrea Riseborough also played his mother on the series, and two would later reunite as mother and son in Michael Morris’ To Leslie (2022), which garnered Riseborough one of the most improbable Oscar nominations of all time.
In the case of You Hurt My Feelings, writer-director Nicole Holofcener had previously cast Teague in the Kathryn Hahn-led series, Mrs. Fletcher, so the Oscar-nominated filmmaker went out to Teague for the role of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ son in the character-driven comedy-drama.

Owen Teague is busy. So much so that even the rising young actor still hasn’t seen his latest film “Eileen” (Neon), co-starring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie, which premiered at Sundance in January.
“How is the movie?,” he asked on a recent Zoom call with IndieWire. That’s because he was down in Australia for six months playing Cornelius, the horse-riding chimpanzee lead in the upcoming sequel, “The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”.
Ever since he first moved to California from Florida at age 18, ditching NYU in order to shoot a movie with Gary Oldman (“Mary”) in Alabama, he has lived out of a suitcase. “I was just working. I actually live under a rock and that has gotten worse as time has gone on. I live under a larger rock now than I did two years ago,” he said.

The casting branch of the academy is only eight years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on February 1 (the last day of Oscar nominations voting). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed a virtual ceremony on March 17, which is the first day of final Oscar voting.
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

Rosalind Chao can tell a lot about people based on which of her roles they want to talk about. “If it’s ‘Star Trek,’ I know it will be an intelligent conversation. If they bring up ‘Joy Luck Club,’ I say something like, ‘You must love your mom!’ I get a lot of ‘What Dreams May Come’ and I know they’re open to different ways of thinking of the universe,” Chao notes, before adding, “Then there are people who just think I’m their gynecologist or their daughter’s teacher.”
Chao can add Mulan’s mother Hua Li to her long list of impressive credits; since the epic live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1998 animated feature debuted on Disney Plus last week, it has already leapt to the number one movie on the service, despite an additional $30 price point. As massive protests against police violence sweep the nation and the world, we need only look at the great films of the past to see that none of this is unprecedented. The reaction to the tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of the police is a culmination of centuries of injustice and oppression, which has led to both protests and riots many times before. Filmmakers have recognized the powerful stories and resonant themes to be explored within this subject and created some of their most striking works as a result. We’ve collected a few of the very best films dealing with protests, riots, civil unrest and activism, chronicling some of the most important real life events in history.

The ongoing global coronavirus crisis is likely to put a crimp in the upcoming fall festival season, especially its effect of being early indicators of what movies are Oscar-worthy.
The first sign that all was not normal came in May, the month that the Cannes Film Festival usually is held. A decision was made that the 73rd edition of the celebration of world cinema would forgo a physical event given the ongoing pandemic. The director of the festival, Thierry Fremaux, announced that they would unveil a selection of movies in early June and collaborate with several festivals such as Venice, Toronto, Deauville and New York to present some films labeled as Cannes selections, if and when those events are eventually held.

Those Oscar fans who are on the ball enough to have a 2021 calendar at the ready might want to circle April 25 in gold. That is when the 93rd Academy Awards will air live on ABC. The ceremony hasn’t been held in April since 1988, when “The Last Emperor” won Best Picture . The last time the show was postponed was in 1981, when it took place a day later after an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. That was the year when “Ordinary People” beat out “Raging Bull.”
Blame the switch from the original date of February 28, 2021 on the coronavirus pandemic. That date is now the new deadline for films to be released. Also delayed is the opening day of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, that was supposed to open on December 14 this year. The date has been moved to April 20, 2021, also because of the ongoing health crisis.

On June 12 the motion picture academy announced changes to the Oscars, including a return to a guaranteed 10 nominees for Best Picture. In recent years the academy has had a sliding scale between 5 and 10 nominees depending on how the voting shook out. In each of those years there were either eight or nine contenders, which means that one or two more films would’ve been included if there had been a full 10 slots. Which films do you think would have benefited from more room in the top category?
For decades the academy only nominated five films for Best Picture, but outcry over the snubs of the 2008 films “The Dark Knight” and “Wall-e” prompted the academy to expand to 10. But that was only in effect for the eligibility years 2009 and 2010, after which the academy implemented the sliding scale, which has been in place for the last nine years. So who came closest in those contests?...

“The King of Staten Island” premiered on June 12 on video-on-demand (instead of in theaters due to the continued pandemic). The comedy is directed by Judd Apatow and stars “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson, who also co-wrote the film inspired by his own life and the death of his father, a New York City firefighter who was a victim of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. So what do critics think of that blend of pathos and humor?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 68 based on 43 reviews so far: 29 positive and 14 somewhat mixed, but none outright negative. On June 12 the motion picture academy announced new rules and guidelines for the Oscars as part of its efforts to make the awards and the academy at large more equitable to underrepresented groups. And along with that is the news that Best Picture will go back to having a guaranteed 10 nominees instead of the current sliding scale between 5 and 10 that has always resulted in either eight or nine films making the cut.
Among the major changes to be implemented include the creation of a task force to create representation and inclusion standards for Oscar-eligible films. The task force will be appointed by academy president David Rubin and include governor and A2020 Committee chair DeVon Franklin. Those standards are due by July 31, 2020, but they will not affect eligibility this year. They will be put in place for films released in 2021 for consideration at the awards telecast held in 2022.
