“Song to Song” isn’t the only new Terrence Malick movie premiering this year. Though both its title and release date could change — and, this being Malick, neither would be a surprise — “Radegund” is currently set to make its festival debut sometime in 2017. A return to World War II for the “Thin Red Line” writer/director, the film is based on the life of Franz Jägerstätter.

Here’s the premise: “Opening at Jägerstätter’s home in the idyllic Austrian countryside, Radegund (working title) follows Franz (August Diehl) and his beloved wife, Fani (Valerie Pachner), along their remarkable path of resistance. Told through real wartime letters, this stirring love story finds the couple in conflict with the members of their close-knit town, their church, their government, and even their friends — all of which brings them to a dramatic choice.

With a 2018 release window already in place, the official synopsis and cast list for Terrence Malick’s Radegund have now found their way online.
Word comes by way of Screen Daily, confirming that David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment will handle international sales for Radegund which, it should be noted, is simply a working title for the time being and is therefore subject to change. Currently brewing in post-production, the film’s logline reveals that Malick’s wartime drama will chronicle the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and conscientious objector who defied Hitler and followed his wife on the path of resistance.
Heralding Malick’s first WWII feature since The Thin Red Line, we understand Radegund‘s ensemble cast is headed up by August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruno Ganz, Martin Wuttke, Maria Simon, Karin Neuhäuser, and Alexander Fehling. Contrary to previous reports, there’s no...

The wrapping suggests something more prestigious: a period drama that examines class and the violent lengths people would go to to preserve honor in the 19th century, perhaps. Set in amongst the gold-encrusted ballrooms and mud-slopped streets of Tsarist St. Petersburg, Alexey Mizgirev’s The Duelist is the tale of Yakovlev (Pyotr Fyodorov), a loner nobleman and former soldier who duels other high society-dwellers for cash. Yakovlev isn’t quite who he claims to be, however, a fact that brings the power-hungry Count Beklemishev (played by sometime Hollywood baddie-for-hire Vladimir Mashkov) and young debutante Princess Marfa (Yuliya Khlynina) into his orbit.
It could be the synopsis for an old-fashioned epic, but in reality, The Duelist is a handsomely-mounted Russian soap in period clothing, complete with dubious plotting, thin characterization and beautiful cardboard stars. The film is also strangely juvenile for one so carefully sculpted. From the first scene, wherein Yakovlev...

Expensive-ish (by Russian standards, anyway) and claustrophobic, Aleksei Mizgirev’s The Duelist resembles an unholy cross of the worst of Tom Hooper and Zack Snyder—and worse yet, it’s mostly diverting. Stalingrad’s Pyotr Fyodorov plays Yakovlev, a disgraced nobleman who returns to mid-19th century Saint Petersburg as a hired gun. Yakovlev is one of those black-clad antiheroes who spends much of his time reminding the viewer that he’s an antihero. He is a man with a dark past, a sharpshooter (his signature trick is blowing a shot glass off his own head with a ricocheted bullet), and a contract killer. Paid by unknown conspirators, he provokes noblemen into deadly duels with the help of a nameless German accomplice (Martin Wuttke).
The premise of intrigue and revenge in a high-society Tsarist underworld is irresistible and pulpy, but Mizgirev’s script is an indigestible, soap-operatic mess of backstories,...

I'd never heard of The Duelist before, but Sony Pictures has just unveiled a full trailer for the upcoming foreign film that looks pretty damn cool. It's set in 1800s Russia and follows an incredibly effective gunfighter who stands in as a duelist for nobles whose honor is slighted by others. But things take a turn when he falls for the sister of a young prince.
This movie looks crazy expensive, with some gorgeous sweeping landscape shots and rad-looking costumes, and it feels a little like a cross between a period romance and an almost steampunk-style take on something like The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm interested to hear what you all think about this trailer.
The Duelist is written and directed by Alexey Mizgirev, and it stars Petr Fedorov, Vladimir Mashkov, Martin Wuttke, Julia Khlynina, Yuri Kolokolnikov, and Franziska Petri. It hits theaters on December 2, 2016.

"You've died so many times. You will never die again." Well, this looks crazy cool. Sony Pictures Russia has debuted a trailer for a big-budget Russian adventure movie called The Duelist, directed by indie filmmaker Alexey Mizgirev. A few moviegoers might've seen the WWII action movie Stalingrad a few years back, as it was released in IMAX by Sony. This is Sony's latest Russian feature that they're be releasing to Us audiences in IMAX even though no date has been set yet. The Duelist is about a vengeful duelist who never loses. The cast includes Pyotr Fyodorov (Stalingrad), Vladimir Mashkov (Ghost Protocol), Yuri Kolokolnikov (Game of Thrones), and Martin Wuttke (Inglorious Basterds). This seems dark and epic and very violent. Russian helmer Alex Mizgiryov caught our attention back in December with the first teaser for his upcoming period set action film Duelist (Дуэлянт). Telling the tale of an 1800's roaming duelist-for-hire that first teaser was slick, stylish, and enormously entertaining stuff. And it has now been followed by a full trailer that is even moreso. Pyotr Fyodorov (The Darkest Hour) Vladimir Mashkov (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Behind Enemy Lines), Martin Wuttke (Cloud Atlas, Inglourious Basterds) and Yuri Kilokolnikov (The Transporter Refueled) all star and we can only hope that this one turns up on the festival circuit soon. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall was the Chilean drama Colonia starring Mikael Nyqvist, Emma Watson, and Daniel Brühl, which follows a young couple who become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Directed by Florian Gallenberger, it was picked up for a U.S. release by Screen Media Films and now we have the first U.S. trailer.

It looks like Emma Watson has another solid looking film project for us to watch. It's called Colonia, and it's set in the '70s, and it tells the true story of a young woman who infiltrates a cult community to find her boyfriend. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty intense thriller.
The movie also stars Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds), Mikael Nyqvist (John Wick), Richenda Carey (Residue, Separate Lies), Vicky Krieps (A Most Wanted Man), August Zirner (The Counterfeiters), and Martin Wuttke (Inglourious Basterds). Here’s the synopsis:

Florian Gallenberger’s thriller is set during the Chilean military coup of 1973.
Florian Gallenberger’s Colonia, starring Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl has wrapped principal photography after 47 days of shooting in Luxembourg, Munich, Berlin and South America.
It marks Watson’s first lead role since Harry Potter. Alongside Brühl and Mikael Nyqvist, the supporting cast includes Richenda Carey, Vicky Krieps, Julian Ovenden, August Zirner and Martin Wuttke.

When Daniel is abducted by Pinochet’s secret police, Lena tracks him to a sealed off area in the South of the country, called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by lay preacher Paul Schäfer (Nyqvist) but, in fact, is a place nobody ever escaped from. Lena decides to join the cult in order to find Daniel.

Gunther Bachman (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) is a German espionage agent stationed in Hamburg to head up a covert anti-terrorist unit tasked infiltrating and gaining intelligence from the local Muslim community. In particular, Bachmann is interested in Dr Abdullah, a local philanthropist who has some shady financial practices. He also learns of Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin), a half-Chechen half-Russian illegal immigrant that was found by Russian intelligence to be linked to terrorism after extensive ‘interrogation’. As he learns more about Karpov’s reasons for being in Hamburg, Bachmann sees an opportunity to finally nail his target.

If I’m a betting man I’m thinking John Le Carré novels play out extremely well for the big screen (last two items were The Constant Gardener, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and that former video helmer Anton Corbijn has transitioned so well into feature film with the two films in his fiche: unconventional biopic Control (2007) and a Euro art-house thriller that we don’t get to see enough of with, The American (2010). A Most Wanted Man has an incredible cast in Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe, not to mention the German actors also on board.

Even with only two feature films under his belt, photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn has become a director with a distinct voice. His debut "Control" was a startling look at the life of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, while his followup "The American" placed George Clooney in a pretty nifty anti-thriller that favored mood over action. And so we couldn't be more excited about this next, the John Le Carré adaptation of "A Most Wanted Man." And with production now starting, a few more names an official synopsis have been revealed for the picture. "Inglourious Basterds," "The Edukators," "Goodbye Lenin!" and "The Bourne Ultimatum" star Daniel Brühl (who was rumored over a month ago) has joined Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright and Willem Dafoe in the film, with Franz Hartwig, Kostja Ullman, Rainer Bock, Charlotte Schwab, Max Volkert Martens and Martin Wuttke rounding...

I had the pleasure of seeing Joe Wright’s fourth feature tonight, the action/drama/thriller Hanna starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, and Eric Bana. While I’m embargoed from sharing any thoughts, Focus Features shared a new clip and a variety of images from the film. The clip features some of the fantastic The Chemical Brothers score, and a snippet from one of my favorite scenes in the film. Check them out below, followed by production notes from the film. Click for hi-resolution versions.
Synopsis
A teenage girl goes out into the world for the first time – and has to battle for her life. Director Joe Wright weaves elements of dark fairy tales into the adventure thriller Hanna, filmed on location in Europe and Morocco.
Hanna (played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, also directed by Joe Wright) is 16 years old. She is bright, inquisitive, and a devoted daughter.

Focus Features decided to basically do all the work of trade news people for them by info dumping all of the relevant information about the films they have slated for a 2011 release so far. So, below you'll find all of that fun information about plots and actors and directors and such. It seems rather inefficient to just retype half of this with snarky comments interspersed, so I've decided to color code it instead. Red text is bad news. Blue text is good news. Black text indicates indifference. If you see other colored text, your drugs are better than mine. (Note: the fact that the ad software renders a bunch of the text in green is patently hilarious.
