Rightfully considered cultural touchstones, "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" began a new era in television that continues on to this day. Arguably though, given how large those shows loom in the zeitgeist, "Oz" lost its significance in television history somewhere along the way. However, without this prison soap opera, those seminal shows don't find their footing.
From 1997 to 2003, HBO's "Oz" told the story of Oswald State Correctional Facility, a fictional maximum security prison located in New York. The penitentiary, nicknamed Oz, includes an experimental unit, Emerald City, that seeks to rehabilitate its inmates rather than punish them. A major source of tension within Em City derives from the religious and racial factions that naturally form in the unit with Latinos, African-Americans, Italians, Muslims, and members of the Aryan Nation living together in close quarters. Across six seasons, the series presents a horrific look at prison life with acts of ultra-violence,...

If Brian Dietzen, aka Dr. Jimmy Palmer, had his way, several fan favorites would be returning to NCIS in the near future. Along with his acting duties, Dietzen has co-written a few episodes of the hit crime drama – and he’s looking forward to writing more storylines for the show’s most iconic characters.
In a recent interview, Dietzen admitted that he would love to create stories for Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Tony (Michael Weatherly), and even Abby (Pauley Perrette), teasing some major reunions as the series heads into the final leg of season 20.

So far, Brian Dietzen (who plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer) has co-written two episodes of NCIS with Scott Williams and adding a third isn’t off the table. But, given that those two episodes came in Seasons 19 (“The Helpers”) and 20 (“Old Wounds”), there are quite a few characters he hasn’t gotten to write for yet, due to cast exits over the years, so for which would he like to do so? “I love so many of these characters. Obviously Gibbs [Mark Harmon], obviously Tony [Michael Weatherly], Ziva [Cote de Pablo], and Abby [Pauley Perrette]. All of these voices are just iconic,” Dietzen tells TV Insider. “So if any one of these were to come back, I would be ecstatic to write for any of them.” It’s hard for him to narrow it down to one, however, because there’s something he’d enjoy for all of them. “Writing for...

When Brian Dietzen joined NCIS as Jimmy Palmer, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard’s (David McCallum) assistant in Season 1 (Episode 21 “Split Decision” was his first appearance), he had no idea the gig would last as long as it has or the journey his character would take. Now, Dietzen is playing Dr. Jimmy Palmer, the chief medical examiner, and he’s been around for all of the major milestones the CBS procedural has reached thus far, with the latest, its 450th episode, coming up on February 27. He’s also gotten in on some of the fun — and action — of the NCISverse crossover, kidnapped alongside LA‘s Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and Hawai’i‘s Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey). Here, Dietzen reflects on his character’s journey so far, teases the milestone episode, and more. In the latest episode you co-wrote with Scott Williams, I liked the mention of Jimmy being Ducky...

A pattern is developing when NCIS star Brian Dietzen and Scott Williams co-write an episode: It’s going to be an emotional one. Their first, Season 19’s “The Helpers,” saw Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Dietzen) and Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) poisoned — while his daughter was visiting him at work. Now, in the February 14 “Old Wounds,” Season 20 dives into Alden Parker’s (Gary Cole) history, with the agent having to deal with his emotions when a conman from his FBI past is the prime suspect in the murder of a navy officer transporting millions of dollars’ worth of opioids. Here, Dietzen previews the episode, talks Dr. Jimmy Palmer and Jessica Knight’s (Katrina Law) relationship, and more. Preview how the case challenges the team, especially Parker. On your mark, get set, run for your lives. The NCIS team pulls security duty for a Navy admiral who’s the grand marshal of a Thanksgiving 5K — even lab denizens Jimmy (Brian Dietzen) and Kasie (Diona Reasonover) are out in the field — but chaos erupts when a shooter opens fire. “Their relaxed race turns into a crime scene right in front of them,” Reasonover says. The only fatality: A turkey float explodes after a bullet hits its hidden generator. (Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBS) Was the admiral the target? The scientists examine the burned husk back at the evidence garage. Meanwhile, Knight (Katrina Law) asks Kasie to lunch at her sister’s (Lilan Bowden) so the guest can play peacemaker between the siblings. “We see Kasie in a new light. After a few cocktails, she lets loose!” reveals Reasonover, who cowrote the ep, her first for NCIS, with Scott Williams.

Solidly crafted and intelligently inspiring, “Beautifully Broken” skillfully entwines three narratives about faith, forgiveness, and fortuitous interconnections in a drama that likely will receive a warm reception from audiences with a taste for evangelical entertainment. Director Eric Welch and his co-writers attempt a tricky balancing act here, comparing and contrasting the struggles of two African families affected by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide with crises that disrupt a well-to-do white family in Nashville. To their considerable credit, the filmmakers avoid virtually all of the clichés common to formulaic stories of “white saviors” and “magical Negroes” while treating their characters, and their audience, with due respect.
The movie begins during the early days of the Rwandan Genocide, as murderous bands of gun- and machete-wielding Hutu militia hunt and slaughter their Tutsi neighbors and co-workers. William Mwizerwa (Benjamin A. Onyango), a devoutly religious Tutsi manager at a coffee export firm, barely avoids being added...

We revisit HBO's sterling and seminal prison drama Oz on the run-up to its 20th anniversary...
Oz is sometimes criminally overlooked in the pantheon of TV dramas, which is a great sin indeed; not only because the show is the obvious grand-or-God parent to a multitude of modern classics (without Oz, it's doubtful whether The Sopranos would've existed), but also because it's an immaculately acted, endlessly compelling, emotionally resonant powerhouse of a show that demands – and deserves – recognition and respect.

"The Americans" is back for a third season. I had interviewed producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, as well as co-star Holly Taylor, and I have a review of the season premiere coming up just as soon as we go get a non-beer... "So it's all been bullshit — everything you've said to me." -Philip On the one hand, "Est Men" is so superficially similar to the last year's premiere that one might wonder if Weisberg and Fields felt the only way to avoid disappointing people who loved season 2 was to duplicate it. Once again, we open with a brutal action sequence in which one of our two leads barely escapes arrest or worse (with Elizabeth making short work of Agent Gaad and another fed), and we close with the shocking murder of a Kgb asset (Annalise, who makes the mistake of telling Yousaf too much in a place with no...

Briefing: Not much has changed, family-wise, since the climactic end of Season 2 — what with Paige still devoted to Pastor Todd's church and Elizabeth still trying to quietly "develop" her for the Kgb — but business has shifted dramatically for agents Philip and Elizabeth Jennings. "Est Men" opens with a telling meet between Elizabeth and a new mark in the CIA. Disgusted with her organization's refusal to recognize her accomplishments, the asset hands Elizabeth an important list, which she then loses after the government employee changes her mind and calls in reinforcements from the FBI. Poor Agent Gaad didn't see that right jab coming. Philip, meanwhile, is palling around with FBI Agent Beeman, accompanying the separated adulterer to a motivational talk led by the Harvard student from "Good Will Hunting" (Scott William Winters). Later, the couple goes to meet their new, old handler, Gabriel (aka Frank F'n Langella), who politely...

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I get a Thug Life tattoo on my neck... "Sometimes, you have to pretend." -Kevin "The Leftovers" has offered some very brief glimpses of the world before the Sudden Departure, and alluded to the characters' histories. It's been focusing on the aftermath of what happened, and hoping that the performances and what little backstory we've been given will be enough to give us a sense of why the Garveys, Nora, Patti, Matt and the others have been acting the way they have three years later. And for the most part, I think the show's been enormously successful at that. Amy Brenneman's face tells me so much about Laurie, for instance, that I was actually relieved she didn't start talking to Patti when they were in the diner in the wake of Gladys' murder. That said, the past...

The only one missing was "B.J. and the A.C.," which was delayed by the series' production hiatus and the need to reshoot parts of this episode. And because the episode's original director Lesli Linka Glatter had gone back to her regular gig on "Homeland," Carl Franklin had to step in to finish things up, making this the rare TV episode with a shared director credit. Title: The Sublime and Beautiful Director: Blake Robbins Starring: Blake Robbins, Laura Kirk, Matthew Del Negro, Anastasia Baranova, Scott William Winters, Armin Shimerman Solid acting and filmmaking technique breathe a good bit of life into “The Sublime and Beautiful,” a Slamdance Film Festival world premiere and narrative feature competition title, but there is ultimately not enough of distinguished merit to save the movie from a screenplay that trades in rote, plodding dramatic developments and say-nothing symbolism. While not without a couple moments of nicely observed quiet heartache, too much of this impressionistic tale of survivor’s guilt, built around a drunk driving accident that robs a small town couple of their three children, is balanced alongside meandering story [ Read More ]

“Ever get the feeling something bad is going to happen?” Kalinda asks early in the “Ham Sandwich” episode of “The Good Wife,” which unfolds at such a leisurely pace, it almost mocks the emotional explosions to come. Episode Title: "Unearthed"
Written By: Josh Singer
Synopsis: A teenage girl is taken off of life support after being declared brain dead, only to awaken in the midst of surgery spouting out an alphanumeric code and showcasing a newfound fluency in Russian. When it becomes apparent that the girl is sharing knowledge with a missing soldier, Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) investigate the mystery while Walter Bishop (John Noble) posits his own theories.
Blast From The Past: As expected, "Unearthed" was a bizarre and unnecessary episode rooted in the first season's continuity where Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo) is still alive, the alternate world is hardly known and Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole) once again has nothing to do. For those that aren't aware, "Unearthed" was filmed during season one but somehow got lost in the shuffle, so here it is now. Like I said, bizarre.

HBO has announced the development of Americatown, a new drama series project from writer Bradford Winters and producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.
Americatown is "set 25-40 years into the future when the precipitous decline of the U.S. leads to a mass exodus of its citizens," says The Hollywood Reporter. The show focuses on newly arrived American immigrants in a large foreign city.
"By presenting Americans as immigrants in the near future, as both underdog and hero in the drama of global dislocation, we substitute a mirror for the rancor that informs much of the partisan debates on immigration," Winters said of the series.
The show focuses both on immigration and on potential financial meltdown, which is quite topical given current circumstances.
Says Winters of the irony: "What is happening right now is such a terrible disaster for so many people and, in some ways,...
