Breaking: On the week that their film was supposed to open in theaters as Apple’s first theatrical release, the makers of The Banker — above and below the line — have issued a statement in solidarity and support for the message contained within a feature film that became embattled when Apple abruptly pulled it from the coveted AFI closing night slot and indefinitely postponed its theatrical release. Apple took those steps after allegations were made in social media posts by Cynthia Garrett — daughter of the film’s main character Bernard Garrett Sr — that her half brother Bernard Garrett Jr (who was listed as co-producer) molested her and her sister decades ago. Garrett Jr has denied those charges and his name immediately disappeared from the producing credits, which he said was his decision. Garrett Jr’s name also doesn’t appear among the 53 who signed the statement below.

Before he was an actor starring in blockbusters such as The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk, Tom Hardy was an aspiring rapper.
And now, fans can take a listen to his mixtape that was unearthed nearly 20 years since Hardy, known back then as Tommy No 1, co-created it with Edward Tracy, the BAFTA-winning writer and director of the popular Fonejacker and Facejacker television shows.
The 18-track compilation, titled Falling on Your Arse in 1999, was released by Tracy (a.k.a. Eddie Too Tall) on Bandcamp on Jan. 8 with the statement: “Made in a bedroom 1999 these mixtapes were never really finished. Lyrics...

Here's another installment featuring Joe Dante's reviews from his stint as a critic for Film Bulletin circa 1969-1974. Our thanks to Video Watchdog and Tim Lucas for his editorial embellishments!
Dustin Hoffman defends his home against murderous thugs in strong, violent melodrama with appeal to both discriminating trades and the blood- and-guts fans. Rating: R.
Director Sam Peckinpah’s fascination with violence as man’s most basic instinct finds new and disturbing expression in Straw Dogs, a difficult, harrowing film which is in essence a long, slow-burning fuse leading to an explosion of bloodshed. On the whole, the ABC Pictures Corp. production possesses a nightmare intensity few horror films could match, and this should be a factor in drawing both serious filmgoers and the mayhem-minded masses. As an action entry, the Cinerama release has the requisite sex and brutality to pull them in, while Dustin Hoffman’s presence an...

As do Panic Room, You're Next, The Purge, The Aggression Scale and Funny Games. Hell, even Macaulay Culkin got terrorized by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci in Home Alone. Some on the list are traditional assaults and some are more unique, but we think we've got it narrowed down to...

Whether you measure your movies by box office, reviews, or popular appeal, Sony’s $125 million remake of the 1990 Ah-nuld Schwarzenegger interplanetary action fest Total Recall looks like a strike-out. The movie opened with a lethal softness; a $25.7 million first weekend meaning Recall won’t even come close to making back its budget during its domestic theatrical run. In fact, despite 22 years of ticket price increases, it’s doubtful the movie will even match the original’s $119.3 million haul.
And for those of you who think maybe the problem is Total Recall was outgunned opening while The Dark Knight Rises was still sucking up box office coin, entertain, at least for a moment if you will, the possibility the movie just plain sucks. According to Rotten Tomatoes’ canvas, almost 70% of reviewers – and over three-quarters of “top critics” – gave Total Recall a thumbs-down. Those who went to see the movie didn’t...

Police in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire smashed a car window to 'rescue' a toy dog from the heat after mistaking it for a real one. After a member of the public reported a dog being left locked in a car, two officers confused the King Charles Spaniel toy worth £4.50 ($$7.20) for a sleeping dog, according to The Sun. Out of concern for the safety of the animal in the 18°C temperatures, the policemen smashed the window of the Mercedes after attempting to wake the toy. Gordon Williams, 80, who owned the car and toy, returned to find his seat covered in smashed glass and an official police note reading: "Smashed your window re concern for animal on rear seat." Nottinghamshire Police have since agreed to pay £180 ($$290) to the retired mining engineer widower so he may replace his window. "I guess (more)...

Although it lacks the grit of Sam Peckinpah.s 1971 original and has several problems that hurt the overall story, Straw Dogs is a tense thriller that uses a slow-burn pace to examine how far a good man can be pushed before he pushes back. Based on Gordon Williams' novel The Siege of Trencher's Farm and on the screenplay by David Zelag Goodman and Peckinpah, the remake was directed by Rod Lurie (who also penned the updated screenplay) and stars James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgård, James Woods, Dominic Purcell, Rhys Coiro, Billy Lush, Laz Alonso, Willa Holland, Walton Goggins, Anson Mount, Drew Powell, Kristen Shaw, and Megan Adelle. Trading rural England for Blackwater, Mississippi, the film follows married...

Forty years ago my main regular writing spot was a weekly page of general commentary on the arts for the New Statesman, and due to the current discussion provoked by Julian Barnes's The Sense of an Ending and the appearance of Rod Lurie's 40th anniversary remake of Straw Dogs, two of the items in the column of 2 December 1971 have a certain topical interest. One is about the third winner of the Booker prize, of which I observed: "Vs Naipaul's In a Free State is a splendid book but is it, as the Booker conditions demand, a full-length novel?"
The other is about a film that had opened the previous week: "I was at the press show for Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, and rarely have I experienced such a palpable sense of shock and disgust sweep through an audience. Peckinpah is an artist I admire immensely and I wouldn't want to ban his film,...

Sam Peckinpah’s controversial Straw Dogs gets a Hollywood remake starring James Marsden and Kate Bosworth. The results, Ryan writes, are rather mixed…
The ultimate question that plagues the release of any remake is, “Why bother?” It’s something that could be asked of any number of the legion horror remakes we’ve seen in recent years (though admittedly, some have been perfectly entertaining), but it’s particularly appropriate in the case of Rod Lurie’s redo of Sam Peckinpah’s controversial 1971 thriller, Straw Dogs.
Why remake a film so of its time, and so clearly Peckinpah’s own – a brutal, nihilistic psychological stand-off based on a book by Gordon Williams?
The original saw Dustin Hoffman’s meek American mathematician head to a quiet Cornish village, the birthplace of his wife Amy (Susan George). There, Hoffman engages in a battle of testosterone and wits against its sturdier menfolk, who are...

Why would anyone want to remake Straw Dogs? That is the question that Rod Lurie's new version of Sam Peckinpah's 1971 film has provoked. Peckinpah's version of Scottish writer Gordon Williams' novel The Siege of Trencher's Farm is a pariah of a movie. Notorious for its rape scene and other instances of unbridled violence, this was a film that disgusted even hard-bitten British critics and became labelled as a video nasty.

The south should rise again; if only to tell Hollywood to stop making films based on bad southern stereotypes.
Screenwriter David Sumner (James Marsden) and his wife, Amy (Kate Bosworth), head out to live in a rural southern community so that David can get some earnest screenwriting accomplished. Amy - an actress who met David on the set of a mutual project - inherited the small property from her father, and had, years ago, lived in the small town.
David is one of those city boy types who wears cream colored pants and pastel shirts, and just hasn't been exposed to the beer swilling, confederate flag adoring, football worshipping, god fearing males that thrive in this small southern town. Things get tense pretty fast,...

Many filmgoers have vivid recollections of Sam Peckinpah.s highly controversial film adaptation of Gordon Williams. novel The Siege of Trencher.s Farm. They might remember it as one of the most violent pictures made at that point, with its bloody brutal and sexual horrors, and its strong sense of misogyny and sadism. A man and his wife return to her childhood small town to take over an inherited house. Locals, including an ex-lover gain access to them by taking on construction jobs. Issues from the past combine with the couple.s apparent wealth and status and the locals. envy to form a fireball of hatred, fear and the will to destroy. Peckinpah.s version of the story is...

"Like the children poking at scorpions in the opening shots of The Wild Bunch, Sam Peckinpah knew how to stir things up," wrote Terrence Rafferty in the New York Times at the top of the month. "In 1971, two years after that exhilarating and phenomenally bloody western made him one of the most famous — or infamous — directors in America, Peckinpah took a crew to the Cornish countryside and came back with a movie called Straw Dogs, which upset audiences in a new, and perhaps more intimate, way."
At MSN Movies, Glenn Kenny reminds us that Pauline Kael once called Straw Dogs "the first American film that is a fascist piece of art." Glenn: "I don't consider the Peckinpah film fascist, but I don't consider it coherent to begin with. The Straw Dogs that starred Dustin Hoffman and Susan George and was set in a particularly unpleasant patch of British countryside registers...

Photo: Screen Gems There is one major flaw when it comes to Rod Lurie's remake of Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs and that's the lack of having a message or reason for telling such a violent and savage story. However, I still came away liking it, primarily because I love the original so much and outside of some setup differences this one doesn't stray too far.
Peckinpah's film starred Dustin Hoffman and Susan George as a couple moving to rural England in an attempt to get away from anti-war protests in America and settle down in the quiet countryside. In Lurie's remake that thematic reasoning doesn't exist, instead David and Amy Sumner (James Marsden and Kate Bosworth), the central couple, have moved out to Mississippi from Los Angeles to restore the Amy's father's cabin following his death. Director Rod Lurie (The Contender, Nothing But The Truth) has had a long three years of dodging and absorbing criticism ever since it was announced that he would be taking the reigns on a remake of Sam Peckinpah's 1971 classic, Straw Dogs Loosely basing his film on the book "The Siege At Trencher's Farm" by Gordon Williams, Peckinpah fashioned a unique statement about the politics of masculinity in his story about American mathematician David Sumner (Dustin Hoffman) and his wife Amy (Susan George) who visit her hometown in England only to find fissures in their marital dynamic. The cracks in their relationship are tested by the differing cultural environment and the local populace (including Amy's ex-boyfriend Charlie) and by the end of the film, well... things get a little out of hand.

Sam Peckinpah's classic Straw Dogs remains one of the best cinematic explorations of the consequences of violence. However, you may not realize the film was based on a short book by Gordon Williams called The Siege of Trencher's Farm, which is about to be re-released by Titan Books, who has provided us with an exclusive excerpt.
Released originally in 1969, The Siege of Trencher's Farm hasn't seen the light of day for a while, but thanks to Titan it will again be available as of August 16th. We'll have a review of it soon, and of course we'll have continuing coverage of the Rod Lurie-directed Straw Dogs remake through its release.
Book Synopsis:
American professor George Magruder, his wife Louise, and their daughter rent an old isolated house known as Trencher's Farm in Cornwall so George can finish his book. When George accidentally runs over a convicted child killer...

If you have not seen the original 1971 Straw Dogs film from writers David Zela Goodman, Sam Peckinpah and Gordon Williams, then this is your second chance, fourty years later. The original placed an American man 'round some good ol' English country folk. This latest interpretation will keep the cast all seemingly American, as seen in this first trailer. Also, possibly looking at issues of a class divide, with James Marsden playing the bookish David Sumner and Alexander Skarsgard acting as the blue collar Charlie, this is interesting, yet violent material. Have a look at the clip below, as some good ol' boys look to make a lasting and brutal impression on Amy Sumner (Kate Bosworth).

Straw Dogs is one of my favourite films and the second best movie Sam Peckinpah ever made. I tell you Rod Lurie better not mess this up and turn it into some I Spit on your Grave Bs. Having said that, I'm a huge fan of James Marsden (The Box) and think he's a perfect choice to play the role made famous by Dustin Hoffman.
Straw Dogs is based on the novel "The Siege of Trencher's Farm" by Gordon Williams, which was published in 1969.
Synopsis:
L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.
The film also stars True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård, Kate Bosworth (who I'll admit is a decent stand in for Susan George) and Dominic Purcell.

When Hop came out last month, bringing James Marsden back into the public eye, I wondered one thing: where the hell is Straw Dogs? Rod Lurie scripted and directed a remake of Sam Peckinpah's polarizing film nearly two years ago, putting the movie into production in late 2009. Doing so attracted no small amount of negative attention, as the original film was one which sharply divided audiences but stands as one of Peckinpah's most significant achievements. How does one make a new version, especially with James Marsden standing in for Dustin Hoffman? (No offense to James Marsden, but some simple truths must be faced, and one is that very few actors are equal to a young Dustin Hoffman.) We've not seen any footage from Straw Dogs, and in fact we've had a peek at barely any materials at all. So here are some of the first real images from the movie.

Peter Andre has accepted "substantial" libel damages over false allegations made by a magazine about his personal life. The popstar took legal action against Ipc media after its Now publication claimed that he had misled the public by presenting himself as a loving father and husband throughout his marriage to Katie Price, BBC News reports. Andre was present at London's High Court when the case was heard in front of Mr Justice Eady today. His solicitor Gordon Williams explained that Now had suggested the singer may have been responsible for two accidents suffered by Price's disabled son Harvey. Much to the chagrin of many Sam Peckinpah's 1971 film Straw Dogs (based upon the book The Siege at Trencher's Farm by Gordon Williams) is getting itself a Hollywood make-over. Can director Rod Lurie capture the essence of the original masterpiece and successfully update it for our times? Well the jury is still out, but the cast is shaping up nicely.
Variety reports that Kate Bosworth and "True Blood"'s Alexander Skarsgard (pictured right) have both signed on to join the previously announced James Marsden in this epic-sized endeavor.
"Marsden plays a Hollywood screenwriter who relocates with his wife to her hometown in Mississippi. Bosworth plays the wife, who left the South for La to become an actress and returns home so her husband can finish his script in quiet. Skarsgard plays her high school boyfriend, an ex-football hero who sees the return of his former girlfriend as a way to reclaim glory.

A far cry from his roles in X-Men and Superman Returns, James Marsden is throwing in his tights for a pen and the will to fight in the upcoming reimagining of Straw Dogs, according to HollywoodReporter.com. Coming from Screen Gems, Straw Dogs is set to start filming in August with Rod Lurie set to direct. Straw Dogs is a redux of the 1971 film which was originally based on Gordon Williams' novel, The Siege at Trencher's Farm. In the pic, Marsden stars as David Sumner (originally played by Dustin Hoffman), a Los Angeles screenwriter (American academic in the original) who moves along with his wife to her hometown in the deep South (rural England, in the 1971 version).
