Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” based on the book by Georgia Hunter, tells the true story of the Kurcs, a Jewish family who lived in Poland at the onset of World War II. The series follows the Kurcs as the events of the war and the Holocaust separate parents and children, tearing families apart.
As casting director Fiona Weir read the script for the first episode, showrunner Erica Lipez stressed that despite the grim setting, it ultimately was a celebratory story — and it was important she get the family dynamics right.
Speaking with Variety, Weir says Hunter, who based the book on her family experiences, turned out to be her most valuable source. “These were real people that she either knew or discovered, so there was lots to talk about in who these people were. And then, we had to create a group that organically felt like a family,...

Exclusive: Saoirse Ronan (Foe) has found her next project in Bad Apples, a biting satirical comedy with thriller elements, for which HanWay Films is launching worldwide sales at AFM. The film tells the story of Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. Take a piece of intellectual property, slap it onto a trendy genre, and presto: You’ve got a hot new show. That’s the formula that’s been feeding streaming content for some time now. Why can’t Marvel superheroes lead a sitcom, like “She-Hulk”? How about we make “Perry Mason” a dark and gritty seasonal anthology, rather than a case-of-the-week courtroom drama? What if “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” wasn’t a bright and bubbly comedy, but a moody and melodramatic teen mystery?
Mapping the teen drama template onto known characters has been a specialty of The CW in particular, and thus a boon for Netflix (which served as the network’s streaming home for more than a decade). From “Smallville” to “Riverdale,” it seemed like name recognition + soapy high school shenanigans was the simple equation to success. And here we are again with “Wednesday,” Alfred Gough and Miles Millar...

Filmmakers all use the same tools, more or less, but do so with endlessly varied methods, says cinematographer Roger Deakins. That idea drove the master cinematographer, who won Academy Awards for Denis Villeneuve’s “Bladerunner 2049” and Sam Mendes’ “1917,” to launch with his wife James Deakins the buzzy behind-the-scenes podcast Team Deakins, a streaming chat show that has now hosted more than 60 film artists of all stripes.
Since April the couple have done their trademark free-ranging interviews with remarkable cinematographers to be sure, including Rachel Morrison and Anthony Dod Mantle, but DPs have no monopoly as guests. Writer/directors Joel Coen and Jason Hall, producer Jon Kilik, key grip Gary Hymns, actors Josh Brolin, Tim Robbins and Joel Edgerton, composer Thomas Newman, post supervisor Dave Diliberto and casting director Fiona Weir have all shared their inspirations and insights on Team Deakins – and the podcast shows no signs of slowing down.

This year’s Baftas will be the first to honour the people who chose the actors we’re used to see clutching their statuettes. When will the Oscars follow suit?
As the buildup to the Oscars gets noisier, spare a thought for casting directors. They have, yet again, been given the cold shoulder. While producers, editors and special effects nerds all get to vie for the world’s most famous statuette, casting directors do not. There is no Oscar for them to tearfully clutch. Indeed, it is a rare thing when an actor, fresh from receiving the industry’s top prize, remembers to thank the person responsible for getting them the role in the first place.
Change is long overdue. While the Baftas on Sunday will present an inaugural award for casting, there is no sign that the Academy is considering following suit. Casting directors have been lobbying for decades...

The follow-up installment of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is casting young actors for principal roles in the U.K., and no previous acting experience is even required. Lead by casting director Fiona Weir, the team seeks a female and two male actors ages 13–16 to play young versions of Leta Lestrange, Newt Scamander, and Sebastian, respectively. Additionally, two male actors ages 16–18 are sought to depict young versions of Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore. Again, no previous acting experience is required, but all talent must be eligible to work in the U.K., meaning they are in possession of a U.K., Irish, or E.U. passport. Actors should also be comfortable working with Nifflers and Bowtruckles. Production is set for August–November in North London, with specifics to be determined. The film is currently slated for a Nov. 16, 2018 release, with David Yates (who directed the first film) in place to direct.

Ready to start pouring over Nathaniel's annual Film Bitch Awards? The time is now. As longtime readers probably have gleaned, in my secret alternate fantasy life I became a casting director. It's one of the three jobs in movies I always thought I'd be terrific at (the others being editing and screenwriting). This is not bragging. It's fan-fic journaling. All cinephiles are allowed, indeed encouraged (at least here), to harbor such 'in another life' fantasies! The natural pull of casting is probably what keys up the interesting in SAG's Ensemble category so much even though they don't ever seem to absorb the meaning of the word but just pick five pictures they liked.
Now that SAG has had their say, here are the Film Bitch Nominees in the casting friendly categories: Casting, Ensemble, and Breakthrough Performers. You'll see major shout outs to Sicario and Brooklyn in particular, both the casts...

Fancy checking out one of the best films of the year? Here's our review of Brooklyn, starring Saiorse Ronan.
In amongst the showier performance-led movies to come this awards season, it's reassuring to see an unassuming coming-of-age story like Brooklyn receiving its fair share of plaudits too. Based on Colm Tóibín's novel of the same name, Brooklyn follows an immigrant's trans-Atlantic love song, set between south-east Ireland and New York City.
In the 1950s, Eilis Lacey (Saiorse Ronan) is a young Irish woman living in Enniscorthy who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when kindly priest Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) arranges for her to travel to Brooklyn and take up a job at a department store. Of course, Eilis jumps at the chance, but leaves behind her elder sister Rose (Fiona Glascott) and her mother Mary (Jane Brennan) for the glamour of America.

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

One of the year's biggest homegrown success stories is Pride, a warm, sharply observed comedy-drama that follows the uneasy alliance between a group of Lgbt campaigners and the striking miners' union in 1980s Britain.
Following its premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Queer Palm, buzz has gathered rapidly around this modestly budgeted gem, which boasts an ensemble cast that includes Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Andrew Scott.
Screenwriter Stephen Beresford first heard the story during the second round of pit closures in the 1990s, during an argument with a friend who was trying to convince him to support the miners.
"I was literally crowing about it, which is not an attractive part of my personality," he admits. "It's like being a gold prospector: 'Yes! These people have been left in obscurity for 30 years! This couldn't be better!'"
But it still took a long time...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Fresh off playing the Winklevoss twins in "The Social Network," Armie Hammer gives an outstanding supporting performance in Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar." It's a performance that almost didn't happen, because Hammer initially turned down the audition. His agent called and told him "J. Edgar" casting director Fiona Weir wanted him to audition for the part of Clyde Tolson, J. Edgar Hoover's trusted adviser and lifelong companion. Hammer read the script and thought it was great but didn't understand the character. "He didn't make sense to me," says Hammer. "I didn't get why Clyde stuck around and took Edgar's hot-and-cold abuse. I didn't understand the depth of their love and the complications of their relationship."Hammer passed, telling his agent that if he couldn't understand it, he wouldn't do well in an audition. Weir persisted, telling him "Clint" really wanted him to audition. "I was like, 'Okay, well, now that you use.

Films about true events and figures in history have the built-in challenge of telling a compelling story while being prone to criticism about historical accuracy. Clint Eastwood is no stranger to this, with past projects such as "Flags of Our Fathers," "Letters From Iwo Jima," and "Invictus." With his latest film, "J. Edgar," he tackles one of the most powerful and controversial figures in American history: the first head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Fiona Weir, who worked with Eastwood on "Invictus" and then on "Hereafter," accepted the challenge of casting his latest. A London-based casting director, Weir was particularly honored to be asked to work on "J. Edgar" because of Hoover's place in American history. Weir relocated to Los Angeles for five months to work on the film, gathering an all-American cast, save Judi Dench as Hoover's mother, Annie. "I did a lot of homework to really get.

"Even though they can play into the heightened 'Harry Potter' world, it's important they remain truthful and naturalistic." ---End Quote--- ---Quote--- "Helena [Bonham Carter] is such a lovely, highly educated lady," says Felton.
