In a big deal that closed in the days leading into this week’s Cannes market, Apple Original Films has landed worldwide rights to Tenzing, the new package we told you about last week starring Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe.
The question we asked today was whether the U.S. buyers would come to play for the Cannes market projects and we have an answer already.
Oscar-winning producer See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech) is producing Tenzing, about the inspirational life of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and his summit of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside fellow outsider New Zealander Edmund Hillary.
A search is underway to cast the lead role of Tenzing Norgay who will star alongside BAFTA-nominated Tom Hiddleston (Loki) as Sir Edmund Hillary and four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) as the English expedition leader, Colonel John Hunt.

“Tenzing,” a film about the true story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s 1953 trek to the summit of Mount Everest alongside Edmund Hillary, has been snapped up by Apple Original Films.
Casting is underway for Tenzing while “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston is set to play New Zealand mountaineer Hillary.
Willem Dafoe (“Eternity’s Gate”) is expected to star as English expedition leader Colonel John Hunt.
Apple acquired the rights the project in what was described as a “competitive situation” as Cannes kicked off. It is one of the first major deals to come out of the market as it goes into Day 3.
“Tibetan born Tenzing Norgay, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, both outsiders on a British Expedition, defied insurmountable odds to achieve what was once thought impossible, reaching the summit of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest,” reads the logline. “After six previous attempts, Tenzing risked everything for one final venture.

In 2019, Australian documentary filmmaker Kitty Green made her first narrative movie, a piercing almost cinéma vérité-style movie focused on an office assistant in a Tribeca film company run by a not-so-thinly disguised Harvey Weinstein. The male culture there and the sexual acts of the boss made it almost a modern horror story at the height of the #MeToo movement. For Green’s second narrative film she has changed up the filmmaking style considerably, but with The Royal Hotel which premiered last week at Telluride and now premieres tonight at the Toronto Film Festival, she is taking an even deeper look at the dark side of men as seen through the female gaze in a broken down hotel bar in a desolate part of the Australian Outback.

George MacKay in ‘True History of the Kelly Gang.’
Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang will open in Australian cinemas on January 9, just 18 days before its Australia Day premiere on Stan.
The short window and limited theatrical release were virtually inevitable after Stan announced the bushranger epic starring George MacKay, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis would premiere in summer as a Stan Original.
The major chains are determined to protect the traditional 90 day window and will not screen the film so distributor Transmission Films this week will start booking the title at the independent cinemas that are screening the Netflix productions The King, The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes and Amazon Studios’ The Report and Brittany Runs a Marathon.
The Netflix titles are screening at the Eddie Tamir family-owned Randwick Ritz Cinemas and Melbourne’s Lido, Classic and Cameo cinemas plus Mel Gibson...

There is, as they say, nothing new under the sun – only variations and modified re-hashings. In the case of TNT’s upcoming drama series, Animal Kingdom, however, showrunner Jonathan Lisco has used the occasion of a panel for the Television Critics Association to set his show apart from its source material – the award-winning Australian film of the same name.
Released in 2010, Animal Kingdom was a loose dramatisation of events in Melbourne that occurred during the 1980s – largely centred on the Pettingill crime family. It starred Jacki Weaver as the terrifying matriarch, Smurf Cody, along with Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn and Guy Pearce, among others. It was written and directed by David Michod (The Rover), and the filmmaker will also serve as executive producer on this television version – as Jonathan Liscoe explained.

Sydney-based film school Metro Screen is set to close its doors at the end of 2015 after Screen Australia pulled its funding.
Chair of the Metro Screen Board Kath Shelper said that the only responsible option was to wind down operations.
.Every effort has been made by Metro Screen to secure additional funding but to no avail," she said..
"We need to be responsible to our staff and ensure we are able to meet our obligations to them, and therefore it is with regret that the Board has made the decision to close Metro Screen in December 2015,. Ms Shelper said.
The Screen Australia funding of $240,000 was directed solely to core operational costs (overheads)..
Metro Screen CEO Christina Alvarez said to cover this loss, the challenge had been to secure approximately $750,000 annually in new projects.
.Whilst Metro Screen has successfully secured some significant high profile projects in the past 12 months, unfortunately the target has not been met.

Snowtown director Justin Kurzel and screenwriter Shaun Grant are collaborating on an Australian bushranger feature.
Grant is writing True History of the Kelly Gang, adapted from the Peter Carey novel, a co-production between Porchlight.s Liz Watts and the UK's Daybreak Pictures.
The novel is seen through Kelly.s eyes, scribbling his narrative on scraps of paper in semi-literate but descriptive prose as he fled from the police.

Joe Penhall was listed as the writer when the project received development funding from Screen Australia.
Heath Ledger played the bushranger in Gregor Jordan's Ned Kelly in 2003 and Mick Jagger starred in Tony Richardson's Ned Kelly in 1970. The first screen version was The Story of the Kelly Gang in...
