Skyfall star pays surprise visit to Helmand province as Sam Mendes's film becomes highest-grossing James Bond of all time
Daniel Craig has paid a morale-boosting visit to British troops serving in Afghanistan as the latest 007 film, Skyfall, became the highest-grossing James Bond film of all time over the weekend.
Craig's third stint as the suave secret agent – and Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes's first – now has a haul of $669.2m (£421m) worldwide. That is well ahead of the previous best tally for a Bond film, Casino Royale's $599.2m in 2006, and the latest instalment in the series that began in 1962 with Dr No continues to perform well. The film opened at No 1 at the Us box office last weekend and took another $41.5m this weekend, in second place behind the latest Twilight film.
Craig's surprise visit to Camp Bastion in Helmand province was timed to coincide with a screening of Skyfall for British troops.
