Iniative kicks off as film festivals continue to asses the merits of co-production markets.
Boost Nl, the new collaborative project between the Holland Film Meeting (Hfm, Sept 22-25) and the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s CineMart, is launching officially this week at the Hfm, which began today at the Nederlands Film Festival in Utrecht
The idea behind the initiative, which will continue at the Iffr’s Cinemart next January, is not just to help Dutch projects but to assist further a number of projects that have already received support from Iffr’s Hubert Bals Fund or have been presented at CineMart.
Speaking to Screen, Hfm chief Vanja Kaludjercic gave further details of the “enhanced coproduction experience” offered to the selected projects.
“Some things cannot be achieved in only three days of the event itself so what we have created is an extended trajectory,” Kaludjercic said of the new Utrecht/Rotterdam axis. The intention...

Well, heres the Wikipedia take "Showrunner" is a term originating in the United States television industry referring to the person who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a television series—although such persons are generally credited as an executive producer[1] or supervising producer. What if you could walk into a hospital waiting room and an invisible beam of light discreetly detected whether you were feeling fine or were feverish, dizzy, drunk, or dehydrated?
Javier Garcia at the University of Valencia in Spain and Zeev Zalevsky at the Bar-Ilan University in Israel see it happening. Soon. They're aiming to revolutionize healthcare with an optical phone that can hear a person’s heartbeat, measure their blood pressure, and even gauge their blood glucose levels, all from up to 100 meters away. Utilized for surveillance, it will allow sleuths to remotely listen in on or even tape cell phone conversations.

Do you know what's cooler than $140 million dollars? Anything more. And that's what Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss are trying to get from Facebook, more than the $140 million their initial settlement entitled them too. The twins, who play a major role in David Fincher's film The Social Network, were back in court this week arguing that they were swindled by their 2008 settlement. The film itself reported that the settlement the Winklevosses signed was for $65 million but apparently now its worth more along the lines of double that, probably thanks to the success of Facebook and their resulting stock options. Even so, soon after they signed the deal, the twins were so upset that they accused the lawyers who helped them sign that settlement of malpractice, and lost. Now this week Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, played by Armie Hammer in the soon to be Oscar-nominated film, were back in court and it doesn't look good.

In a follow-up to the behind-the-scenes power drama revealed in The Social Network, the Winklevoss twins (the movie's Armie Hammer) have lost the appeal of their 2008 $140-million Facebook settlement. Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have been trying to improve on that deal, as the fortunes of Facebook founder, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), have soared. Judge John Wallace argued that they had too much smart counsel for anyone to pull the wool over their eyes: “I agree my clients were not behind the barn door when brains were passed out,” admitted Jerry Falk, the Howard Rice partner arguing the appeal for the Winklevosses. “But the same is true of Facebook. You had sophisticated people in the room on both sides.”...

There were, however, many arts practitioners on the list. Is the Diary the only one surprised (and pleased) to see Steve McQueen get a Cbe, given the artist's marathon battle with the establishment to get the Iraq war dead printed on stamps? Among the other recipients of a Cbe – and the Diary apologises to the names omitted here – are producer Trevor Horn, sculptor Richard Wentworth, theatre director Howard Davies, choreographer Wayne McGregor, trumpeter John Wallace, actors Sheila Hancock and David Suchet, and composer Howard Goodall. OBEs went to Annie Lennox, folkie Richard Thompson, director Andrea Arnold, actor Burt Kwouk, costume designer Sandy Powell and composer Colin Matthews. And there are damehoods for actor Harriet Walter, mezzo-soprano turned professor Felicity Palmer and writer Antonia Fraser.
Disappointingly, despite the Diary's call for a triple whammy of knighthoods for Ken Dodd, Ronnie Corbett and Brucie Forsyth, they got nothing.
