This year’s David Bowie World Fan Convention took place in New York City. Over several nights in several locations, musicians and other players who worked with David Bowie spoke with fans about the golden years. One creative concept which was reinforced over the weekend is how Bowie chose to work with artists who were as curious, experimental, and funny as himself. No one fits that bill as much as guitarist, composer, arranger, and natural raconteur Carlos Alomar.
Born in Puerto Rico, and raised in the Bronx, Alomar is a New York institution. He made cultural history when he was 17 as the youngest guitarist in the history of Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater, going on to join the house band. The guitarist met Bowie in 1974 and stepped right into the recording of Young Americans. Alomar brought in singers like his wife, Robin Clark, who brought in Luther Vandross, who brought songwriting chops to the sessions.

In 1973, John Lennon separated from Yoko Ono and began a relationship with the couple’s assistant, May Pang. Ono was aware of this; according to Pang, Ono got them together in the first place. After a whirlwind 18-month affair, Lennon returned to his wife, however. While he wrote off the affair and the events surrounding it as temporary confusion, Pang said she continued to see him in the years after their relationship ended.

When Ono first told Pang she wanted her to begin a relationship with Lennon, she resisted. Pang said she didn’t want to disrespect their marriage, even though she recognized they were having problems. Eventually, though, Lennon charmed her, and they moved in together.
“He was just an interesting person.

While Yoko Ono and John Lennon were a power couple in the late 1960s and 1970s, the two went through a rough patch between 1973 and 1975. The couple separated briefly, and John Lennon began dating their assistant, May Pang. While John and Yoko never officially separated, Pang recently revealed that Ono did ask the “Imagine” singer for a divorce.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono separated in 1973. The pair reunited in 1975, but this period became known as Lennon’s “Lost Weekend.” The 18-month era saw a boom in musical production from Lennon and a series of public drunken outbursts. Lennon also started a relationship with Pang, and the two moved to Los Angeles.
Pang is sharing her experience of their relationship in a new documentary, The Lost Weekend: A Love Story.

David Bowie’s handwritten lyrics have been sold at auction for £57,000.
The words to Bowie’s song “Jean Genie” were written on a piece of paper and given to a superfan in the 1970s.
Bowie, who died in January 2016 aged 69, released the song in 1972 as part of his Aladdin Sane album.
The song tells the story of Jean Genie who “snuck off to the city, strung out on lasers”. It went on to reach number two in the Official Chart.
The singer had gifted the handwritten words to the founder of the David Bowie Fan Club, Neal Peters, reports the BBC.
Now, the lyrics have been sold off at St Helens auction house after Peters found out that the “Starman” lyrics sold for over £200,000 last year.
The lyrics for “Jean Genie” were given an estimated value of between £50,000 and £70,000, with the firm calling them a “historic set of lyrics”, says the BBC.

BBC News has issued an apology after accidentally running a photo of Viola Davis alongside a headline about Beyoncé.
During the broadcaster’s Sunday (5 February) night live coverage of the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, they showed an old Golden Globe image of Davis behind a chyron, which read: “Beyoncé’s big night.”
Immediately following the error, numerous viewers responded on Twitter, with one sharing a screenshot of the moment with the caption: “Who’s gonna tell @BBCNews?”
“I’m guessing it’s a mistake but with all their resources BBC have zero excuse for this,” a second responded.
Acknowledging their blunder, BBC News tweeted an apology on Monday (6 February).
“We apologise for the mistake last night when our news channels briefly showed a photograph of Viola Davis from January’s Golden Globes alongside a headline about Beyoncé at yesterday’s Grammys,” they wrote.
“This fell below the BBC’s usual standards.

David Bowie’s producing partner Tony Visconti has scoffed at claims that “Harry Styles is the new Bowie”.
The American producer, best known for his lengthy involvement in producing and arranging many of Bowie’s singles and albums, voiced his opinions regarding Sunday (5 February) night’s Grammy Awards.

He further took aim at Styles’s live Grammy performance of his hit single “As It Was”, writing: “Someone just told me that Harry Styles is the new Bowie?
“From what I saw tonight, he’s not worthy of shining his shoes.”
Numerous people agreed with Visconti’s views, with one responding: “There will Never be anyone that’s the new David Bowie he is in a class of his own always will be unique.”

Brett Morgen’s “Moonage Daydream,” a freewheeling documentary about David Bowie, doesn’t offer a chronology of the life of the late pop icon. Rather it provides a fever dream of sound and vision, with songs torn apart, reimagined and reassembled in ways that reflect its subject’s chameleonic music and art.
The doc, out now in IMAX theaters, was a labor of love for Morgen that took four years to assemble and edit. It was another 18 months constructing the ambitious soundtrack, which required the talents of the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” team of Ventura, Calif.-based rerecording mixer Paul Massey (with David Giammarco); London-based supervising sound and music editor John Warhurst and supervising sound editor Nina Hartstone; and Dolby Atmos Music Studios.
Veteran mixer Massey recommended Warhurst and Hartstone to Morgen. “We know instinctively what each other is about to do,” Massey explains.

With films like “Walk the Line” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” on his résumé, re-recording mixer Paul Massey is no stranger to working with the music of beloved pop acts. But Brett Morgen’s epic David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” had its own unique pressures right out of the gate.
“These songs are iconic, so there was a ‘don’t mess up’ factor, big time,” Massey told IndieWire. “I grew up in London in the ’60s and ’70s, and Bowie was a huge influence at that time, not only on what was being played on the radio but culturally. Throughout his career he would achieve success in one genre of music and then turn 90 degrees left and try another genre. Then he’d throw that up in the air and try something else and succeed at that as well. He carried on doing that in art, music, and fashion all his life.

It could have been a straightforward documentary about the David Bowie story — but who wants straightforward when it comes to Bowie? Instead, Moonage Daydream is a gloriously innovative trip into the Thin White Duke’s mind, written, directed, and edited by Brett Morgen. He specializes in portraits of twisted artists, whether that means Hollywood mogul Robert Evans in The Kid Stays In The Picture or Kurt Cobain in Montage of Heck. But his latest goes even deeper, a full immersion in the gaudiest, glammiest of rock-star lives. In one of...

If you’re looking for a documentary that tells you about David Bowie, the man, researched and presented with clear-eyed, journalistic rigour, then Moonage Daydream is not it. You won’t learn Bowie’s date of birth, the names of his first school or first girlfriend or children, his personal politics, favourite colour or even the nature of the disease that killed him. You won’t learn why he chose this or that film role or the meaning of this or that lyric. The words “David Robert Jones”, Bowie’s legal name for his entire life, are not mentioned once. The smattering of biographic detail we do get – a light-touch look at his relationship with his troubled half-brother and distant mother, his meeting second wife, Iman tell us little that a Bowie fan can’t find out from watching literally any of the dozens and dozens of Bowie documentaries produced over the years.

The first thing you notice while watching Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is David Bowie’s teeth. He smiles a lot. The Thin White Duke, and leader of the Spiders from Mars, is known as a serious artist. Yes, he sang “chubby little loser, national joke” to Ricky Gervais on Extras; mined Bikini Bottom humor for SpongeBob SquarePants; and was certainly happy to make lots of money dancing the blues in his red shoes, but the majority of Bowie’s works, both on screen and audio, are serious studies. Towards the end of the documentary, we hear Bowie say he always thought himself an adventurer, praying for the most exciting life one could have. Morgen shows the artist enjoyed himself immensely, possibly even more than Bowie fans.
Moonage Daydream is Morgen’s third pop-music documentary, following the Rolling Stones film Crossfire Hurricane (2012), and Montage of Heck, his 2015 dive into the...

Brett Morgen went through a lot to make “Moonage Daydream.” It takes certain amount of obsession to capture on film the essence of the life of David Bowie, the shapeshifting music visionary, artist and actor. For Morgen, known for his work exploring another singular artist with “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” as well as “The Kid Stays in the Picture” and “Jane,” crafting the first authorized Bowie documentary was a nearly seven-year process. Until it was time to create the encompassing sound mix with help from Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti, he worked mostly alone, weathering both the pandemic and a serious heart attack.
“Moonage Daydream” is like no other music documentary audiences have seen before. With no talking heads or Bowie 101 facts, it’s geared towards super-fans and possibly the Bowie-curious, with sonically-enhanced remixes of more than 40 of his hits and lesser-played songs interlaced with never-before-seen images of his artwork,...

After premiering at Cannes this year, Neon’s acclaimed David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” will get a one-week limited engagement on Imax when it hits theaters on September 16.
Directed by Brett Morgen, “Moonage Daydream” tells the story of the iconic rock star through his own words and music, combining never-before-seen archival footage of David Bowie’s decades-long career with kaleidoscopic imagery and new mixes of his most famous songs. Bowie’s longtime collaborator Tony Visconti also worked on the film with the sound team of Paul Massey, John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone, who won Oscars for their work on the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Brett Morgen vividly remembers the first time he met David Bowie. When the Thin White Duke insults your work, it tends to burn deep into your memory. It was 2007, at which point Morgen had been a filmmaker for over a decade and had made documentaries on boxers (On the Ropes), Black music in America (the Say It Loud series), legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans (The Kid Stays in the Picture) and the Chicago 10 (Chicago 10). He had this idea for a collaboration with Bowie on what he called “a sort-of hybrid experimental film.

A new David Bowie doc, as well as a Jerry Lee Lewis film helmed by the Coen Brothers’ Ethan Coen, are among the films set to screen at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
Moonage Daydream was directed by Brett Morgen (best known for the Kurt Cobain doc, Montage of Heck) and is the first Bowie doc to have the approval of the late musician’s estate. The film is described as both a concert documentary and an “experimental cinematic odyssey” that will track Bowie’s life and career, delving into his work as a musician,...

“Moonage Daydream,” a David Bowie historical film featuring a bounty of previously unreleased footage and helmed by Brett Morgen, the director behind “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” “Jane” and “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” will be distributed in the U.S. by Neon and internationally by Universal Pictures Content Group, with a streaming premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the spring of 2023. Variety broke the news of the project last November.
While no theatrical release date has been announced for the film — the first to be officially sanctioned by Bowie’s estate — sources tell Variety that it is likely to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, the lineup for which is scheduled to be announced Thursday.
While the announcement sheds little light on what the film will actually be, it does note that Morgen was given “unfiltered access to Bowie’s personal archives and … unearthed hundreds...

A top-secret David Bowie project will soon see the light of day from the mind of Brett Morgen, the director behind “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” “Jane,” and “The Kid Stays in the Picture.” Per Variety, the hybrid film is based on thousands of hours of rarely seen concert and performance footage of Ziggy, who died from liver cancer in January 2016.
Sources told the publication that Morgen has been working on the Bowie film — which has yet to announce a title — for the past four years. A source also said the film is “neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material.” That’s not unlike Morgen’s 2015 “Montage of Heck,” which blended more traditional documentary elements with expressionistic collages and artwork to explore the life and times of Nirvana frontman Cobain.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen will reportedly set his documentary skills on another music icon: David Bowie.

Brett Morgen, the freewheeling director behind “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” “Jane” and “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” is finalizing a top-secret David Bowie project based on thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the musician, most of it previously uncirculated, sources confirm to Variety.
Morgen has been at work on the Bowie film, for which an official title has not been disclosed, for the last four years. A source close to the production cryptically describes it as “neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material.”
Sources say live concert footage plays a central role in the film, and that Morgen is eyeing an IMAX release. The filmmaker wears a number of hats on the project, taking on editing, writing and producing duties, in addition to directing.
A Sundance Film Festival premiere in late January could be in the cards.

How to introduce an entity as mercurial as Sparks, the band that forms the subject of Edgar Wright’s fantastic, fond, fizzy documentary portrait, to those who don’t know them? With over five decades and 25 albums’ worth of music, sibling frontmen Ron and Russell Mael have been virtually the only constant in a group whose lineup has changed with roughly the frequency of iPhone updates, and whose sound pinballs around the pop-musical map, from glam-rock to prog-rock to electro to disco to techno. So maybe, given their fondness for the French New Wave, we’ll just say: one sings, the other doesn’t. Or, as suggested by a great clip of an aghast Shelley Winters on a 1981 talk show: One sings, the other looks a bit like Hitler.
In any case, after the 140 minutes of “The Sparks Brothers” zip by like a tight half-hour, even the previously uninitiated may...

David Bowie’s unreleased covers of John Lennon’s “Mother” and Bob Dylan’s “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” will be released on what would have been Bowie’s 74th birthday.
Both tracks on the seven-inch vinyl “Birthday Single” — limited to 8,147 copies, including 1,000 pressed on cream vinyl, as well as a digital release — were recorded in the studio by Bowie in 1997 and 1998.
The cover of the Lennon classic “Mother,” from the 1970 LP Plastic Ono Band, was recorded for a planned-but-never-released Lennon tribute album; long-time collaborators Reeves Gabrels and Tony Visconti also play on the track.

Ringo Starr and Marc Bolan became close friends and drinking buddies in the early Seventies, and on Saturday, Starr inducted the late T. Rex frontman and his band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a pre-taped ceremony.
Back in the day, T. Rex were quickly becoming a phenomenon, inspiring Beatles-like devotion from fans as leaders of England’s glam-rock scene alongside Bolan’s pal, David Bowie. Starr offered to document one of T. Rex’s concerts at Wembley Arena in early 1972, a few months before the band issued its landmark LP,...

Kesha had just finished previewing her new album, Rainbow, for industry types at a Los Angeles recording studio three years ago when she encountered a stout, bearded guy with a “friendly, happy” vibe in the hallway. “You must be an artist,” he said, referring to her bright-red Nudie suit festooned with images of sea creatures.
She didn’t know who he was — and, it turned out, he didn’t recognize her either — but she soon learned he was a producer named Hal Willner, and he immediately recognized her name when she introduced herself.

The dawn of the Eighties was supposed to make prog bands like Genesis, Yes, and Rush die out like the dinosaurs, now that we were in the age of MTV and New Wave. That’s not quite how it played it out, however. The men of these bands chopped off their long hair, cut their standard 20-minute songs down to size, and somehow became more popular than ever. They even joined forced in various short-lived supergroups and charted with slick hits that competed for Top 40 airplay alongside the latest offerings by Madonna and Michael Jackson.

In “Stardust,” a movie that dramatizes David Bowie’s road trip across America in 1971, David (Johnny Flynn), several years into his career but still, in terms of image, a bit of a leftover hippie rocker, finds himself performing at a convention of vacuum-cleaner salesmen. It seems that his manager back in England had failed to secure him a U.S. work visa. So even though he’s supposed to be touring the States, he can’t give concerts, can’t perform on television or radio. But his publicist from Mercury Records, Ron Oberman (Marc Maron), has lined up press interviews and figured out how to sneak in some third-rate gigs.
“Stardust” opens with a title that says “What follows is (mostly) fiction,” and if you want to know how that rather inauspicious promise translates, it’s there in the moment when Bowie gets up in front of the vacuum salesmen and says,...

Bang a gong, T. Rex fans. The great British glam-rock studs are finally going into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a year after their comrades Roxy Music. It’s a beautiful moment because Marc Bolan has always stood for everything benignly insane about glam. T. Rex didn’t flourish long — Bolan was killed in a car crash in 1977, just two weeks shy of his 30th birthday, and wrote nearly all his great songs in a three-year hot streak. But he’s been a guiding spirit for cosmic dancers ever since.

King Crimson’s Robert Fripp Spars With David Bowie Estate Over ‘Heroes,’ ‘Scary Monsters’ LP Credits
Robert Fripp, King Crimson’s co-founder and guitarist, said he is involved in a dispute with David Bowie’s estate over being properly credited for his contributions to the late artist’s 1977 Heroes and 1980 Scary Monsters albums. Thin Lizzy’s songs typically addressed badass rock & roll topics like bar fights, jailbreaks and medieval battles. But on Black Rose: A Rock Legend — their ninth LP, released 40 years ago today — the band paid tribute to their Irish homeland with a highly unusual and weirdly touching album-closing epic.
“Tell me the legends of long ago,” Phil Lynott sings over a rolling, waltz-time riff at the beginning of “Róisín Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend,” named for an old Irish song that addresses the country as though it were a lover.
