In an upcoming video, we will be looking at the modern genre classic Vfw. I say genre because while my wife astutely pointed out that the drugged-up gang in Vfw kind of act like rage zombies and the movie has that great over the top gore and characters, its not really horror. Its gritty action like the movie that inspires it, Assault on Precinct 13. Genre encompasses multiple things like horror, exploitation, and any other type of movie that just has that feel to it. While today’s movie isn’t horror, though it does have situations that would be scary in real life, it is genre. It’s school-ploitation at its finest and has a pedigree both in front...

Remakes: they used to be rare and few in between, but at this point, they are a dime a dozen, with just about any movie being up for a remake, especially in the horror genre. One remake that fans of the original were not happy about seeing it being made was that of Fright Night. The original film was released in 1985 and has become a classic to horror fans, one they love to return to and quote. It’s got that perfect balance of horror and comedy with fun performances, good music, rad effects, and everything a horror movie of the mid-1980s needed. Then, the remake happened. With the release of Renfield, Nicolas Cage gets to fulfill one of his bucket list roles. He stated that the three roles he wanted to play eventually were Superman, Captain Nemo, and Dracula. He missed his chance for Superman but has at least knocked Dracula off his list. Now that the film has been released, we can see all the fun references to the Dracula lore. What Renfield Easter Eggs did you miss?

Vampire movies go back over 100 years, offering audiences a wide assortment of different takes on the mythical creatures. From horror to comedy, and a delightful blend between the two, these blood-sucking creatures have remained a part of mainstream cinema for many years. The fantastical horror comedy Renfield brings a new twist to the Dracula and Renfield relationship, but here are five vampire movies to check out along with it and where you can watch them.

The original 1931 Dracula is one of the classic Universal Horror movie monsters, making the titular character one of the most iconic images when it comes to vampire movies. With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...

The 1980s was a great decade for horror, with classics like “The Shining,” “The Fly,” and two “Evil Dead” movies. Effects were largely practical (not computer-generated) and genre giants Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Sam Raimi and David Cronenberg were making some of their most iconic movies ever.
So come back with us to the Overlook Hotel, the Slaughtered Lamb pub, a cabin in the woods and Elm Street. If you dare.
The Shining (1980) “The Shining” (Warner Brothers)
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) goes mad after being hired as a winter caretaker at a remote mountain resort in Stanley Kubrick’s eerily masterful adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel.
The Changeling (1980) “The Changeling” (Entertainment One)

As you may recall, we had learned several years back that writer/director Tom Holland was working on a sequel to his 1985 vampire movie Fright Night, which was taking the form of a novel rather than a feature film. What’s the latest on that? Well, Holland’s sequel tale hasn’t yet been told, but this week we’re hearing that it’s definitely still on the way soon.
In the meantime, Holland is back with a novelization of the original movie titled Fright Night: Origins, and the eBook and Paperback versions of the book are Available Now!
The Hardcover version of Fright Night: Origins will release on October 14, 2022.

"House of the Dragon" moved into the back half of its 10-episode first season this week with a time jump that ushered in a whole bunch of new faces and wigs. Some of the new actors are playing older versions of characters we've already met, as in the case of Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke, who have taken over for the departing Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower, respectively. Others are playing their children, adolescent and teen characters we're just now meeting or getting to know for the first time, such as young Prince Aegon Targaryen, played by Ty Tennant.
What's that you say? A Tennant on "House of the Dragon?" In this economy? It's true, and this is the same Ty Tennant who briefly acted with his adoptive father, David Tennant, in the recent PBS and BBC One adaptation of "Around the World in 80 Days.

Teenage Charley Brewster is a horror-film junkie, so it’s no surprise that, when a reclusive new neighbor named Jerry Dandridge moves next-door, Brewster becomes convinced he is a vampire. It’s also no surprise when nobody believes him. However, after strange events begin to occur, Charlie has no choice but to turn to the only person who could possibly help: washed-up television vampire killer Peter Vincent.

Synopsis
Meet Jerry Dandrige. He’s sweet, sexy, and he likes to sleep in late. You might think he’s the perfect neighbor. But before inviting Jerry in for a nightcap, there’s just one thing you should know. Jerry prefers his drinks warm, red, and straight from the jugular! It’s Fright Night, a horrific howl starring Chris Sarandon as the seductive vampire and William Ragsdale as the frantic teenager struggling to keep Jerry’s deadly fangs out of his neck. Only 17-year-old Charley Brewster (Ragsdale) knows Jerry’s bloodcurdling secret. When Charley can’t get anybody to believe him, he turns to TV horror host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), who used to be the “Great Vampire Killer” of the movies. Can these mortals save Charley and his sweetheart Amy (Amanda Bearse) from the wrathful bloodsucker’s toothy embrace? If you love being scared, Fright Night…will give you the nightmare of your life.

Tom Holland‘s Fright Night has cemented itself as a crucial pillar in ’80s vampire canon. There’s an embrace of bloodsucker mythologies in addition to cheeky commentaries about how vamps are perceived in the media (using the character of Peter Vincent). It’s a tale as old as Dracula between eternal lust and pointed fangs that sometimes […]

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.
The Faculty

[Hello, readers! To celebrate Valentine's Day, the Daily Dead team thought it would be fun to do things a little differently this year. We're putting the spotlight on our favorite horror-loving characters from genre cinema—people who have represented our own fandom on screen and, in many cases, helped bring our passion for horror into the mainstream. Be sure to check here for more of our tributes to some of the greatest horror fans to ever grace the big screen.]
As a kid, while I loved every possible monster out there, I was a total vampire nerd through and through. I’m not sure what it was that completely drew me in—perhaps it was their power, their bloodlust, their uninhibited nature, or even their immortality—but vampires were where it was at, as far as I was concerned during my childhood. Which brings me to my picks for my favorite horror fans in cinema: Mark Petrie from Tobe Hooper’s miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s ’Salem’s Lot, and Charley Brewster from the original Fright Night. To be honest, it was hard for me to choose between the characters, simply because they both meant so much to me growing up, so I felt like I needed to give each of them their due here.

We’re back to dissect another remake and this time we’re taking a bite out of a vampire movie. The original version was a classic but the remake does not quite measure up. This week, Cinelinx looks at Fright Night (2011).
When the remake of the classic vampire film Fright Night (1985) came out in 2011, the initial reaction was very positive because it was such a relief to have truly evil vampires back. After the brooding and sparking vampires of Twilight started a trend of angst-ridden or lovelorn or depressed vampires, fans were thrilled that the blood-sucking antagonist of director Craig Gillespie's new Fright Night remake and his fellow vamps were hard-core predators with no reservations about chowing down on their next-door neighbor. The Fright Night creatures-of-the-night were more Dracula than Edward. It was good to have the badness back. However, upon reflection, the 2011 version doesn’t hold up that well.

Last year, when we first began planning out what we wanted to do with Deadly Magazine, the very first thing I put on our editorial calendar was a celebration of Tom Holland’s Fright Night so that I could pay tribute to one of my very favorite films of all time in honor of its 30th anniversary.
Sometimes a movie comes along and changes your life and, for me, that film was Fright Night. Growing up as a horror fan, I often felt like the kid that was often misunderstood and so when I discovered Holland’s directorial debut on VHS in 1986, it had a profound impact on me because deep down, I was Charley Brewster. I was also a kid being raised by a single mom, that had a profound love of horror movies and a genuine affection for the hosts who brought them into my home week in and week out.

Thirty years ago, a teenager named Charley Brewster peered outside his bedroom window and glimpsed the murderous acts of the new neck-chomper next door, Jerry Dandrige. Fright Rags is celebrating Charley, Jerry, and horror host extraordinaire, Peter Vincent, with a new Fright Night shirt.
Featuring Charley and Peter armed and ready to do battle with Jerry, who is pictured in full vamp mode, against a backdrop of Jerry's Victorian house and the swirling cloud reconstruction of Amy Peterson's impossibly wide grin, this shirt gorgeously captures the people and moments from Tom Holland's directorial debut that have stayed with fans for three decades.
Available as a T-shirt, hoodie, and baseball tee, Fright Rags' "Who's It Gonna Be Tonight" Fright Night shirt is now available to pre-order for $27.00 as a T-shirt, $47.00 as a hoodie, and $37.00 as a baseball tee. The shirts are expected to ship out in mid-September. To learn more,...

Though it may be hard to believe, it’s been nearly 30 years since Charley Brewster teamed up with Peter Vincent to take down vampire-next-door Jerry Dandrige in writer/director Tom Holland’s eerie, entertaining horror film, Fright Night. To celebrate the movie’s three-decade mark, Twilight Time has announced they will release a 30th Anniversary, Special Edition Blu-ray of Fright Night in January.
Twilight Time recently revealed that they are unleashing a 30th Anniversary, Special Edition Blu-ray of Fright Night on January 21st, 2015. Special features have yet to be revealed, as well as the final cover art.
In December of 2011, Twilight Time came out with 3,000 copies of a limited edition Fright Night Blu-ray. Not surprisingly, the release quickly sold out. There’s no official word yet on how many copies will be available this time around, but we’ll keep Daily Dead readers posted on further announcements. Here’s the...

The "Ti West Style" is one of indie horror's greatest myths. The lethargic pacing, the articulate compositions, the fury of rupturing tension in the final act — these are certainly traits of a Ti West film, but they're details of his style, not its essence. West is a clever, self-aware filmmaker who makes movies laced with subtle but confident in-jokes for discerning viewers. He wears his influences like merit badges on a sash: Tom Noonan's ham-chomping turn as a gothic, Peter Vincent-like television host sets the tone nicely for West's debut "The Roost," which is replete with old-school horror radio dramas that pour from static-addled car radios, and smart-ass kids who look at creepy barns and say, "No way, man." In "The Innkeepers," West sits us down in front of a laptop as we watch an empty rocking chair, waiting for something to happen — and waiting, and waiting, when...

House of the Long Shadows (1983)
Directed by Pete Walker
Written by Michael Armstrong, Earl Derr Biggers (novel), George M. Cohan (play)
Cast: Desi Arnaz Jr. (Kenneth Magee), Vincent Price (Lionel Grisbane), Peter Cushing (Sebastian Grisbane), John Carradine (Lord Elijah Grisbane), Christopher Lee (Corrigan), Sheila Keith (Victoria Grisbane), Julie Peasgood (Mary Norton), Richard Todd (Sam Allyson), Louise English (Diane Caulder), Richard Hunter (Andrew Caulder)
I like to think of “House of the Long Shadows” as kind of the super group of horror films. What I mean is that typically that term is reserved for the music field for example, Damn Yankees, Asia, Velvet Revolver, Audioslave. Hopefully, you get the point. It’s professionals who have already made their own fame and fortune alone or with another group, but band together for a second helping of notoriety. I don’t know if anyone in this film...

A company called Kreepy Kustomz creates handcrafted horror film-inspired lunchboxes. They have a great assortment of lunchpails and considering the time that goes in to creating them, the prices are really reasonable. These lunchboxes start at $40.00 and go up from there. While the starting price does not include a thermos, buyers can add one on for an additional charge. This Etsy shop also has some amazing minimalist horror poster art for sale. What’s more, the store’s proprietor is also available to do custom work.
We are focusing on our top five choices that Kreepy Kustomz has available as of this posting but there are plenty of other options available as well.

Not much to speak of in the pre-amble this week except that From Dusk Till Dawn episode 2 on Netflix continued in fine form and presented an interesting and somewhat unique version of a vampire which was actually quite scary. If you have written this off because it sounds cheap and forced (admittedly on paper it does) I urge you to give it a watch, the dialogue alone is better than most TV shows, “Got your balls on?” is a great line I will repeat ad nauseam henceforth.
In other news Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has criticised internet providers for not providing a good enough service to allow users to use Netflix to its full potential and the costs of maintaining such a connection, mainly what ISPs are expecting streaming companies to pay them. Is Son of Ghostman a good flick Hell yes it is. Its inspired and its rewarding and trust me Its got big replay value. There are also enough quirky themes within the pic to craft an entertaining drinking game on the fly... which ironically enough goes against plenty of hipster frat boy douchebag stances introduced in the movie. But dont feel bad about knocking back a few while screening this little indie that could because its really all about fun. Having just wrapped Son of Ghostman Im going to keep the horror host theme alive. Its time to line up Elvira and the classic vamp flick weve all come to adore Fright Night. With Tom Holland’s latest series now available on FEARnet and VOD entitled “Twisted Tales” and his group of short stories exclusively for the Kindle, “Untold Tales”, Holland is entering into a new creative stage in his long and varied career as an actor, writer, director, and producer.
The legendary creator of Fright Night, Child’s Play, Cloak & Dagger, and Psycho II (just to name a few), Holland recently reached out to Dread Central to discuss his thoughts on the new incarnation of Fright Night 2: New Blood (review) from director Eduardo Rodriguez, the new FEARnet series, and his upcoming projects including his desire to remake his 1982 screenplay The Beast Within. There’s also a great update about adapting Stephen King’s “The Ten O’Clock People” showing how both writers are working together to make the story fit more into the modern world.

Ok, wait, so I’m confused. For all intents and purposes, Fright Night 2: New Blood is billing itself as a sequel to 2011′s Fright Night remake starring Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell, yet it has absolutely nothing to do with the previous project. None of the cast returned, the suburban story isn’t referenced in the least – in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Fright Night 2: New Blood is a spiritual remake all on its own, starting anew with familiar characters thanks to screenwriter Matt Venne. All the characters are named exactly the same, “Evil” Ed yet again starts in human form, Amy is back as Charley’s love interest – the only true change is that Gerri is now a female vampire played by the sultry Jamie Murray.
Unfortunately, Edurdo Rodriguez’s “sequel” is the worst kind of sequel – because it isn’t a sequel at all. Fright Night 2: New Blood...

Originally lensed in 1985, Fright Night, from writer/director Tom Holland (Child’s Play), went on to become a favourite amongst my generation and to this day is still held in very warm regard. The sequel, which followed in 1987, wasn’t as successful as the original, yet remains a much sought after title on DVD and Blu-ray. The original film was remade in 2011 starring Colin Farrell in the vampire role and Fright Night 2: New Blood is a sequel to that remake. With me so far?
Well now it gets a little confusing. This iteration of Fright Night 2 is a remake of the Original Fright Night, not the sequel or the remake, which also throws the legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory into the mix. Still with me?

Ahead of the home entertainment release of Fright Night 2: New Blood, HeyUGuys had the opportunity to speak with the immortal Gerri Dandridge a.k.a. Jaime Murray. During the course of our conversation she confessed to her habitual tendency to remove the horror from horror films, showed a refusal to define herself as either a Freudian or a Jungian, described a yucky feeling, and spoke about the challenges of unearthing a little gallows humour thanks to realism. Yes, we are still talking about the aforementioned vampire film…

The direct to video market and the recent remake boom together have created a curious anomaly that hasn’t yet received a label that really fits it. Case in point, I’m not sure really what do call this latest incarnation in the “Fright Night” series. Is it a sequel to a remake or is it a remake of a sequel? It’s supposed to be perceived by the general horror watching public, as a sequel to the Colin Farrell “Fright Night” remake, but anyone who is familiar with the first two films could compare it to the 1988 sequel to the original. Both have lead lady vampires after a lead male vampire in the first films. See how confusing it can get.

I have nothing against straight-to-dvd sequels to theatrical films. If a movie does minimally well in the theater and there's an audience for a lower-budget and less risky follow-up, I say why not? With that being said, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I actually enjoyed 30 Days of Night: Dark Days and even The Scorpion King sequel and prequel. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about Fright Night 2: New Blood.

As usual, let's begin with a brief history lesson.
Fright Night (1985) arrives from Columbia Pictures and writer/director Tom Holland (he'd later go on to direct Child's Play, The Temp, and Thinner), becomes a modest box office hit, and goes on to become a nostalgic favorite among horror fans of a certain age. (Like me.) Essentially a teenager vs. vampire rendition of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, the original Fright Night was about a kid who discovers that his new neighbor is a murderous bloodsucker -- but of course nobody believes him. Fright Night Part 2 (1987) reunited the kid (William Ragsdale) and the reluctant hero (Roddy McDowall) from the first movie, but the plot (about a female vampire with a serious grudge) wasn't nearly as novel. Worth a look for fans of the original Fright Night, but certainly nothing too memorable. Fright Night (2011) brought a very amusing Colin Farrell to...

The “Fright Night” franchise is not dead yet. Not at all.
The somewhat sequel “Fright Night 2: New Blood” is released today on DVD and Blu-ray. In this movie, actress Jamie Murray plays the vampire seductress Gerri who preys over Charley.
This sequel is kind of a remake of the original movie re-introducing the main fan favorite characters of Charley Brewster, Peter Vincent, Ed Bates and Amy Peterson. And the primary adversary is a female vampire instead of suspicious vampire neighbor Jerry.
The horror comedy film introduces a new cast to star alongside Murray with Will Payne, Sean Power, Sacha Parkinson and Chris Waller.

“Ghoulish” Gary Pullin is known for his original horror artwork, which has appeared on t-shirts, posters, magazines and more. The poster is now available to order and there’s also a purple metallic variant for those that prefer that version (seen below). Both posters meaure 18″ x 24″ and are limited edition releases. Here’s what Gary Pullin had to say about working on this passion project:
“Tom Holland’s Fright Night quickly establishes that your cozy suburb town may not be the safest place to live after all and your neighbours may not be… human.
Fright Night is the benchmark film for 1980′s horror. It’s a fan favourite and for good reason – the film is a trick or treat bag brimming with ghoulish fun. It’s sharply written, rife with atmosphere and pitch black humour.

Hooking up with sceptical girlfriend (rising Brit star Imogen Poots) and dubious Vegas vampire hunter Peter Vincent (David Tennant), Charley finds himself up against a formidable foe. Lars and the Real Girl director Craig Gillespie wittily reworks the 1985 horror classic for a new generation.

We recently gave you a look at the trailer and photos from Fright Night 2: New Blood. Due out on Blu-ray and DVD in October, we now have an exclusive photo to share with Daily Dead readers.
“By day Gerri Dandridge is a sexy professor, but by night she transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves ensnared in Gerri’s chilling web of lust and terror. Charley and “Evil” Ed must stop Gerri from drinking and bathing in the blood of a “new moon virgin,” which just so happens to be Charley’s ex-girlfriend, Amy. They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called “Fright Night,” to drive a stake through Gerri’s plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.

"Welcome to Fright Night for real!"
I thought director Craig Gillespie‘s remake of Fright Night was fantastic. I really enjoyed it, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Fox decided to make a sequel to it, but this one is going straight to Blu-ray and DVD, and it looks like the level of quality that you would see for those kinds of films. In fact, the movie just looks like a remake of Gillespie's 2011 film, only not as good. This time around they decided to sex it up with a female villain vampire that bathes in blood. Here's the synopsis for Fright Night 2: New Blood:
