A few months ago, the Vanity Fair photo department was asked to prepare for yet another adventure: this time, a cover shoot with the charming Johnny Depp at a beautiful international location. The photos would accompany a profile of the actor being written by contributing editor (and Depp pal) Douglas Brinkley for the July issue. Our original plan was to rendezvous with Depp, photographer François-Marie Banier, and a V.F. fashion team in Paris, where we’d been told Depp would be staying and where François-Marie is based. But it was not to be. Depp was headed to his private island in the Bahamas, and we awaited an e-mail or a Twitter message for further details.
