(L-r) Nicolas Cage in Dream Scenario. Photo Credit: Jan Thijs. Courtesy of A24
Dream Scenario is more of a nightmare for Nicholas Cage’s character, in this darkest of comedies from Norwegian writer/director Kristoffer Borgli, a social satire commenting on the power and irrational nature of social media. While Cage’s character is not having a good day, actor Nicholas Cage looks like he is having a grand old time, relishing this role as a hapless guy at the center of this outside-the-mainstream dark comedy.
Like his role as a backwoods recluse in Pig, Cage is anything but prettied up for this part, playing an aging, balding professor whose ordinary guy life is upended when random people start seeing him in their dreams.
At first, Cage’s middle-aged academic is sort of flattered by the attention, although he has done nothing to cause his dream appearances. The biology professor...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains light spoilers for “The Wheel of Time” Season 2.]
If you’ll spare a weary critic a moment of vulnerability, I must admit: I do not understand “The Wheel of Time.” Not enough, anyway, though not for lack of trying. I’ve now seen the first season of Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy adaptation twice. I’ve read the Wiki pages as well as reviews from my fellow critics. I’ve screened the available Season 2 episodes, while poking around in recaps and social media reactions. The books remain unopened, but I’ve gone over their synopses and summaries, so I feel I’ve done my due diligence. I have given “The Wheel of Time” a spin, a fair shake, and a hard look.
Nevertheless, I don’t get whatever is going on here. In Season 2, Mom and Dad are fighting, but I can’t quite pinpoint how Lan (Daniel Henney) “failed” Moiraine (Rosamund Pike...

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). A “Blossom” reboot is well past the ideas stage. Mayim Bialik, who starred in the titular role of the 1990s sitcom, tells me series creator Don Reo has written a pilot for its return. “The show was supposed to be ‘Catcher in the Rye’ about a girl, which was unusual. And we’d like to do a reboot that’s unusual. We’d like to do a single cam,” Bialik says. “All of the cast is on board.”
However, it sounds like it’ll take more time to get things going than they were hoping. “It’s a set of conversations with Disney because there’s a lot of red tape and there’s a lot of complexity,” Bialik explains. “It’s complicated.”
Bialik revealed in an Instagram post this month that the reboot is in the works after talking about it during an appearance she and Reo made at Rhode Island’s Bryant University.

Star Trek: Discovery is finally here!
The latest iteration in the storied Star Trek franchise boldly went to new heights on Sunday, launching its anticipated first episode on CBS before premiering the second on the CBS All Access streaming service immediately after. Walk onto the soundstages at Toronto's Pinewood Studios, a massive complex of airplane hangers jutting out into Lake Ontario, and you'll see transporter rooms, engine rooms and lots of vaguely futuristic hallways. A producer is giving journalists an impromptu tour, pointing out small details like the Malaysian puppets hanging in an officer's ready room and bragging about the creation processes of phasers, badges and alien races.

You might be surprised that one of today’s biggest actresses, Amy Adams, has never won an Oscar. Despite being nominated five times in the timespan of a decade, the 42-year-old has been denied in both the best actress and best supporting actress categories — but is she alone among her peers when looking at history?
The talented redhead was nominated for best supporting actress four times — for Junebug (2005), Doubt (2008), The Fighter (2010), and The Master (2013) — before snagging a best actress nomination for American Hustle (2014). This year, Adams is considered by Scott Feinberg to be a major threat for the best actress category this year thanks to her work in Arrival (though Nocturnal Animals could garner attention, too).

Warm Bodies surprised us, not that it managed to coalesce enough to really push up in the ratings, but we went in with pretty low expectations. The most important thing about the film was probably the degree to which it let us down by having the tools and not capitalizing on them – something that we’ll repeat when we get to Nicholas Hoult‘s next movie.
Still, we had fun, mostly, and it was entertaining enough. Most of our complaints were along the lines of how it could have, and should have, been better, as opposed to just that it went in a garbage direction, so it’s got that going for it.
Something about it makes me hope for interesting things on the home release, which is more than you can say for a lot of three star films. What that comes down to, I suppose, is that we recommend it,...

Chicago – Since I know I’m the fairest of them all, I won’t focus on the symbolic impressions of ‘Mirror Mirror.’ This is the Snow White legend based on the original story by the Brothers Grimm, and includes Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane in its cast.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
It was a lovingly delivered film, full of fairy tale production design, amusing asides by Nathan Lane, a princely performance by Armie Hammer and America’s-Sweetheart-Gone-Bad Julia Roberts. What it lacked in that delivery was a spark of energy, and preferred launching easy gags instead of going darker. It’s not that the film is disappointing, it’s just that by the end there is a feeling of something missing, or a wish that the whole film could have been as good as its sporadic best moments.
Th film is not the Disney Snow White familiarity, it is...

Kellan Lutz as Poseidon, Immortals These days, it doesn't take much to easily top the North American box office. But then again, if money is scarce — like it is for the 99% — and you have the choice between watching Adam Sandler in drag and a semi-naked Henry Cavill, who would you — regardless of your gender/sexual orientation — rather go see? Toplining Henry Cavill's pecs, abs, and legs, Tarsem Singh's Immortals grossed more than expected last week, though less than expected yesterday: as per studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, the period fantasy adventure collected $32 million (including $1.4 million from Thursday midnight showings). Last week, many pundits were predicting a $25 million or so opening; yesterday, there was hope Singh's movie might reach as high as $38 million. Why didn't it? Well, Immortals was down 32% on Saturday — 25% after deducting Thursday midnight figures — and is expected to be down 33% today. The Sunday downturn...

Henry Cavill, Immortals Starring Henry Cavill, Tarsem Singh's Immortals grossed more than early estimates published last night: new official studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo has the film pegged at $15 million on Veteran's Day Friday (including $1.4 million from Thursday midnight showings), which indicates the period fantasy adventure may bring in as much as $38 million over the weekend. That would be about $12 million above what "tracking" had indicated. For comparison's sake: Zack Snyder's 300, which also featured lots of muscular legs and chests, took in $70.88m (approx. $82m today) on its debut weekend in early March 2007. (Coincidentally, Snyder is directing Man of Steel, which stars Cavill as Superman.) And unlike 300, Immortals has the advantage of 3D surcharges; 70% of the 3,112 theaters showing the film are doing so in 3D. Also, Louis Leterrier's 3D epic fantasy Clash of Titans, featuring Avatar's Sam Worthington, collected $61.23m on opening weekend (approx.
