The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

Theater Camp is a hilarious film by first time directors Molly Gordon (Booksmart), and Nick Lieberman. This was a collaborative effort between friends as it’s written by Molly Gordon, Ben Platt, Nick Lieberman, and Noah Galvin which was a labor of love because while it’s kooky, it’s full of vulnerability and earnestness.
The movie opens at AdirondACTS (located in the Adirondacks in upstate NY), a rundown theater camp founded by Joan (Amy Sedaris). While they’re readying for the summer session of kids to arrive, the staff is shocked to learn Joan has fallen ill. However, its too late to mitigate circumstances as the diverse group of kids show up before the camp can cancel the session. The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

Casting directors Bernard Telsey and Adam Caldwell are already back at work on season two of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
The series stars Christine Baranski as Agnes van Rhijn, a socialite living in early-1880s New York City with her sister, Ada Brook, played by Cynthia Nixon. “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes brings wealth, scheming and social hierarchy to New York, and with that a wealth of Broadway actors who make appearances throughout the first season.
Telsey and Caldwell spoke with Variety about how they were able to bring Nathan Lane, Bill Irwin and Steven Spinella to the show. They also talk about why Baranski called Agnes “a dream role,” and they tease casting for season two.
Were you surprised by how well the first season was received?

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” swept the Latino Entertainment Film Awards on Sunday, taking home four awards, including best picture, director, cinematography and editing.
The awards, which are voted on and presented by the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, also honored Oscar-nominated actor Rosie Perez with the Rita Moreno Lifetime Achievement Award and the Latino Activism Award. In a pre-taped speech, Perez thanked the Leja and spoke about her work as an activist.
“It’s weird getting an award for it to be quite honest – because I don’t do it for that. I do it just to help make the world a better place for everyone,” Perez said.
“The Prom” and “Hamilton” star Ariana DeBose was given the Latino Breakout Award. “I believe fervently in representation and I’m really proud to be even be a small part of the expansion of how we are viewed in this entertainment industry. We are a vast,...

In Apple TV+ anthology series Little America, casting directors Bernard Telsey and Adam Caldwell found the ultimate casting challenge—a project centered on lesser-known, international talent, who needed to be able to meet very specific language requirements.
Exploring the journeys of American immigrants, the heartfelt comedy is based on a collection of true stories published in Epic Magazine. For the casting directors, part of what resonated about the series had to do with the kinds of stories it was telling, and how they were approached. “It was exciting, having all these different immigrant stories that were not focused completely on their struggle, but who they were as people,” Caldwell says, “aside from being immigrants.”
Another aspect to the series that drew the pair in was that it required a casting process unlike any they’d undertaken before. “We knew that it was going to be a daunting task, because every...

One of the most positive aspects of an often-fraught awards season is the light it shines on the craft behind some of the year’s best films. It’s a time to learn more about the contribution of cinematographers, production designers, editors, and many more. Casting directors have a strange distinction in the awards world: It’s a guild with an Academy branch, but without its own Oscar category. Imagine for a moment that there was one. What are the best-cast films of 2019?
IndieWire reached out to a number of the film industry’s top casting directors to ask them to not only nominate one of their colleagues for their work this year, but to help us understand why their work was so skillful and vital to the films they worked on. What follows is not another end-of-the-year list, but insight into the craft of casting by its leading practitioners.

Warner Bros. Television’s head of New York casting, VP Meg Simon has retired after nearly two decades with the studio and a career of more than 40 years as a casting director and executive in television, theatre and motion pictures. Wbtv casting VP Findley Davidson — who has worked closely with Simon for 12 years at the studio — will now serve as Wbtv’s new head of New York casting.
The studio is not confirming but it appears likely that Simon, a highly regarded casting director/executive, has taken one of the buyouts/early retirement packages made available to veteran employees at all WarnerMedia divisions after the At&T acquisition was completed. Wbtv head of current programming Melinda Hage also recently retired after 25 years at the studio.
“We are incredibly fortunate at Warner Bros. Television to have been associated with Meg for almost 20 years,” said Tom Burke, Wbtv Evp and Head of Casting.
