USC Annenberg’s Inclusion Initiative released its annual “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” which analyzes 1,500 top films from 2007 to 2021 for gender and race/ethnicity representation.
Overall, there have been significant gains for women and people of color directors but improvement is still needed, the study says.
Notably, the percentage of women directors of top=grossing movies reached 15% in 2020, an all-time high. They include Nia DaCosta, Olivia Wilde, Sanaa Hamri, Ava DuVernay, Cathy Yan, Patty Jenkins, Patricia Riggen, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Lilly and Lana Wachowski, Catherine Hardwicke, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Loveleen Tandan, among others.
The percentage of directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups helming top-grossing films also reached a 15-year high in 2021 though, men benefitted the most, the study finds. The percentage of women of color directors did not change across the study.
According to the report, fewer than 2% of all top-grossing directors were women of color across 15 years. This is...

Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative have wasted no time in the new year when it comes to keeping tabs on diversity in Hollywood. On Tuesday morning, they released a new research brief that revealed 10.6% of the directors of 2019’s top movies were women. This marks a watershed moment as it is the highest percentage of female directors in the top films in 13 years. Still, 10.6% is a considerably low number that could afford to be higher — a lot higher.
Nonetheless, the movement of the needle should be celebrated. The study examined the presence of female directors working across the 1,300 top-grossing films from 2007 to 2019. The findings found that 12 women each directed one of the 100 top films in 2019. While the overall percentage of female directors across the 13-year time frame remains 4.8%, 2019’s number was the highest across the years examined.

Ava DuVernay's snub in the Best Director category for "Selma" at this morning's Oscar nominations is disappointing, but not unprecedented. Prior to DuVernay, eight different women were denied Best Director nominations for movies that garnered Best Picture nominations. They are: 1. Randa Haines, "Children of a Lesser God" (1986) 2. Barbra Streisand, "Prince of Tides" (1991) 3. Valerie Faris (co-director with Jonathan Dayton), "Little Miss Sunshine" (2007) 4. Loveleen Tandan (Danny Boyle's co-director in India; he won the award), "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008) 5. Lone Scherfig, "An Education" (2009) 6. Lisa Cholodenko, "The Kids are All Right" (2010) 7. Debra Granik, "Winter's Bone" (2010) 8. Kathryn Bigelow, "Zero Dark Thirty" (2013) Meanwhile, only four women have actually earned nominations for Best Director in the history of the ceremony: Lina Wertmüller for "Seven Beauties" (1976), Jane Campion for "The Piano" (1993), Sofia Coppola for "Lost in Translation" (2003), and Kathryn Bigelow for "The Hurt Locker" (2009). Bigelow is the only woman to win the award. ...

"Slumdog Millionaire" reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor I recall being asked a few times if I had a favorite film and I would always reply that it’s an impossible question to answer as there are a few greats through many generations. “Slumdog Millionaire” is, to this date, the motion picture that has touched me most. This is the greatest film I have ever had the privilege to view. When interviewing Danny Boyle for his other gem “Millions” back in the days when we were located in Atlanta, I was most impressed with how comfortable Mr. Boyle makes one feel and how interested he is in you as a person. He focuses on you and shows real interest, listening carefully to your answer as if you matter as much as he. Perhaps this was largely due to my South African upbringing and family history. In any case, he has a calmness...

Oscars officials have missed out on making history this year by refusing to rejig rules about co-directors landing nominations. Film critic and blogger Jan Lisa Huttner insists Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire partner Loveleen Tandan, who is credited as a co-director, could have become the first woman of colour to land a Best Director nod - if Academy members had simply considered her.
Oscar rules state that only one person can be nominated for the Best Director prize, but Huttner, a founder of advocacy initiative Women in the Audience Supporting Women Artists Now (Witaswan), is using Tandan's case to push for a change in voting.
Huttner insists she's not attacking Boyle, who is nominated for the Best Director prize at the Oscars on 22 February, but an outdated Academy stipulation, which fails to reward those involved in the filming process.
She raised the issue before the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, asking readers of her blog, TheHotPinkPen.com, to write to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and suggest Tandan should be rewarded for her co-directing efforts as a nominee and potential winner.
She wrote, "If Loveleen Tandan was Danny Boyle’s co-director then, why isn’t she his co-nominee now? I sincerely believe this question deserves an answer, but unless we all ask, we’ll never get one."
And now Huttner hopes her campaign prompts Oscar bosses to reconsider their rules.
She explains, "In 80 years, only three women have ever been nominated for a Best Director Oscar - Lina Wertmueller, Jane Campion and Sofia Coppola - and only two men of colour - John Singleton and Ang Lee, who won for Brokeback Mountain.
"If Loveleen Tandan is co-nominated for her work on Slumdog Millionaire, then she will be the first woman of colour ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar, and if she wins, she will be the first woman ever accorded this great honour. In my review of Slumdog Millionaire, I call it 'the first great film of the new flat world,' so isn't this the right Cinderella ending for this wonderful film?"...

A leading U.S. women's campaigner has launched an online protest demanding Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker Danny Boyle shares this year's Best Director nomination with his female co-director.
Jan Lisa Huttner, of pressure group Audience Supporting Women Artists Now (Aswan), began her campaign for the joint nomination after Boyle labelled co-director Loveleen Tandan's contribution to the Mumbai-based box office smash "indispensable". Yet Tandan's name does not appear on the Academy Awards ballot paper.
Huttner - who is also a film critic - claims the oversight is symptomatic of a wider gender divide in Hollywood. Yet she admits it is ultimately Boyle's decision to share the prestigious gong.
She says, "Women find it harder to be able to make films and have their films seen. That's why this is such an important issue."
Only one person may be named on the ballot, yet last year Joel and Ethan Coen chose to jointly accept the honour for their hit No Country For Old Men.
And Huttner pressured Boyle by saying of the brothers, "They waive the rules at their own discretion."
However Tandan, who rewrote the film's script in Hindi and filmed some scenes herself, insisted Boyle's nomination was fair.
She says, "My credit is not 'Directed by'. It is 'Co-Director (India)'. I am greatly honoured by the credit I have been accorded.
"It would be a great injustice if the credit I have should have the effect of diminishing Danny Boyle's magnificent achievement."...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -- Obviously, the stars of David Fincher's cinematic telling of the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" are Brad Pitt as the title character and Cate Blanchett as his soul mate, Daisy. But this spellbinding fairy tale -- beautifully adapted by Oscar winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) -- requires much more than just A-list power to paint its haunting picture. In a New Orleans hospital, a dying woman asks her grown daughter, Caroline (Julia Ormond), to read from a journal. The woman is Daisy, and the diary is the extraordinary story of a man she knew named Benjamin Button, who was born old and grew younger. They shared a lifetime bond, though they only truly connected in the middle for a while. Caroline and Daisy (an astonishing deathbed performance by Blanchett) lead us into Ben's narrative of a life lived backward,...

Okay, so here we are. This article will basically amount to my capstone piece for the end of 2008 as I will now hand out what amounts to the first ever RopeofSilicon Awards. My hope for future RopeofSilicon Awards is that I can figure out some kind of nominating and voting system so you, the users, can award each of these categories by nominating films throughout the year, running mini For Your Consideration campaigns in the comment section and so forth. Unfortunately, such an endeavor is outside of my capacity at the moment so you will have to deal with my opinion on each category for now, but as always I want to hear your opinion on who you would award in the comments below. After all, my opinion is just the start of things in order to get you thinking and talking, it certainly isn't the end-all/be-all of opinions.

As noted in the teaser above Milk comes out with two pics for Best Picture while The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire also took a top prize each. Sean Penn continues to battle with Mickey Rourke for the Best Actor slot and even tied in San Francisco as they just couldn't make up their minds and offered up another tie. Heath Ledger took Best Supporting Actor on all four lists and Kate Winslet gets a bit of love for Revolutionary Road from the St. Louis crowd and for The Reader...

Today I joined the New York Film Critics Online for the first time as we selected our picks for the best of 2008. And despite the fact that I didn't pick Slumdog Millionaire for much of anything, it practically swept the awards, nabbing Best Picture, Best Director for Danny Boyle and co-director Loveleen Tandan, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. Ok, fine, I picked it for Best Cinematography-- at least one of my picks made it. The acting awards went to actors who have been tapped by other critics groups as well-- Sean Penn for Best Actor (Milk), Sally Hawkins for Best Actress (Happy-Go-Lucky), Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor (The Dark Knight) and Penelope Cruz for Best Supporting Actress (Vicky Cristina Barcelona). While I know runners-up don't count, it's worth noting that both female categories were exceptionally close, with Michelle Williams (Wendy and Lucy) damn near winning Best Actress,...

Slumdog Millionaireby Mike Digiorgio, Writer It sounds like it could be a Saturday Night Live skit – a poor man from the slums of India goes for it all on the Hindi version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Actually, I’m pretty sure it was one, called “Who Want To Eat?” It was funny to watch, but if you say the title out loud, you realize what’s being joked about. Slumdog Millionaire can make you smile, but it’s an intensely dramatic and well-layered story. A young Indian Muslim named Jamal (Dev Patel) goes on Millionaire and is great at it – so much so, the authorities feel they have to investigate. There’s no way this lowly kid from the streets – this “slumdog”—could know so much. What the authorities learn while they question him is that Jamal is so book smart because he’s so street smart.
